everyone's chasing pokemon. i mean al is busy right now trying to get one -- >> here we go. okay. >> i hope you'll be ready for the weather, al. >> we'll check back in, al. >> okay. don't bother me. this one's lost on us old people. we'll get to more on that in a moment. but to our top story, president obama heading to dallas today to try to help that city heal after last week's attack on police. he'll be joined by vice president biden and former president george w. bush. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in dallas. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. president obama once again having to assume the role of consoler in chief. this will be the 11th time during his presidency that he's tried to comfort a city after a mass shooting. and this as we're learning more about the gunman from his parents. micah johnson's parents say that he seemed like a different person when he returned from afghanistan and they never expected this. after an emotional vigil monday night, today dallas is remembering its fallen.

>> we must lead america in protecting and supporting our police officers. >> reporter: as more protests over deadly police shootings spilled into several cities. vice president biden telling lester holt there's anxiety and fear on both sides. >> it's real. there is institutional racism that exists throughout our society. it is getting incrementally better. but the truth is that that's not good enough. we have to keep pushing. >> reporter: today dallas police are digging through micah johnson's past trying to determine why he was stockpiling bomb making materials. >> he knew what he was doing. this wasn't some novice. >> reporter: speaking to "the blaze," in their first interview, johnson's parents say they watched their son transform from a fun loving extrovert into a hermit after his military service. >> i didn't see it coming. i love my son with all my heart. i hate what he did. >> reporter: this morning new details about how the massacre unfolded. just before 9:00 last thursday,

johnson pulls up in his car near the college campus. using pillars for cover he fires multiple rounds shooting a rapid transit officer execution style. the gun battle rages with other officers on another street corner. he shoots out a door in a locked building on campus. almost 60 students were inside. over the next several hours, s.w.a.t. teams are in a horrifying standoff across a long hallway where johnson taunts negotiators and asks how many officers he's already killed. the police chief says all the students and two of its wounded officers survived. >> i'm extremely proud of them and extremely proud of all the members of the dallas police department. >> reporter: a night that weighs on trauma surgeon brian williams. >> i think about it every day. that i was unable to save those cops when they came here that night. this killing, it has to stop. >> reporter: as this memorial xwr grows, the police chief says he

and his officers are running on fumes and another neighboring department will assist with security here along with the secret service, of course. then several of the funerals for the fallen officers are scheduled for tomorrow and thursday. >> hard days in dallas. it is a big day in the presidential race as well. bernie sanders joining one-time rival hillary clinton on the campaign trail for the first time. and this morning, speculation is heating up over both clinton and donald trump's potential running mates. we have it all covered. start with nbc's andrea mitchell. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a month after she wrabd pped upe nomination, hillary clinton is final will i getting bernie sanders' endorsement today here in new hampshire, a battleground state where he trounced her in the primary. at last for team clinton, the civil war with bernie sanders, the last democratic holdout is over. weeks after his battled progressionive elizabeth warren embraced clinton. >> i'm here today because -- i'm

with her. yes, her. >> reporter: bernie sanders even waiting until after president obama on the stump. sanders and clinton not exactly a match made in heaven. >> wait a minute. i have stood on the debate stage with senator sanders -- >> excuse me. will secretary -- senator? >> reporter: now clinton, echoing sanders' economic themes about the rich. >> they are doing better than ever. corporate profits are up. whereas so many americans are stalled or have fallen backwards. >> reporter: making concessions on the party platform, agreeing to a $15 an hour minimum wage, free college public tuition but pegged to family income, a public option odded to obamacare. but will sanders followers be enthusiastic about a democrat many vowed they'd never support. >> the more hillary clinton keeps the volume high on big, bold progressive ideas, the more enthusiastic bernie sanders supporters will be going into november. >> reporter: will sanders fire up young people for clinton

after promising them a revolution. >> it is about creating a political revolution. >> reporter: with the party united, clinton can focus on choosing a running mate. a safe choice like senator tim kaine. >> democrats are coming together around our candidate and to win in november, republicans are jumping ship. >> reporter: not interested, joe biden. unable because of his son's death to mount his own campaign for the white house. >> i have great respect for hillary. i'm going to work like the devil for her but i'm not looking to be vice president again and no one has talked to me. >> reporter: sanders' endorsement is a almost plus for clinton, especially right now. in our new nbc news fbz survey monkey online poll she only has a three-point lead over donald trump today. no doubt reflecting the damage from that blistering fbi report on her e-mails. savannah and matt? >> andrea, thank you. as for donald trump, his vice presidential pick could come any day now. nbc's halle jackson is in

cleveland where the republican convention gets under way less than a week now. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning. this is one of the biggest decisions a candidate can make. donald trump is now promising that decision by the end of this week. the countdown to a running mate now on with the convention here in cleveland just six days away. down to the final four, speculation swirling about donald trump's vp pick. but newly revealed audio from 2008 shows back then he thought his current rival would make a decent running mate. the "wall street journal report"ing these comments about hillary clinton. >> well, i know her and she'd make a good president or a good vice president. >> reporter: a very different tone from trump now. >> crooked hillary clinton. >> reporter: as he looks for a vice president to play attack dog. indiana governor mike pence trying out for the role tonight when he appears with trump at a rally outside indianapolis. >> the very idea that we would be considered along with a number of other distinguished

americans for that position is very humbling. >> reporter: another contender, newt gingrich, tells nbc news the vp announcement could come in 48 hours. but gingrich says even if he's offered a spot, he's not an automatic yes. >> would want to talk through exactly what does he have in mind. >> reporter: trump himself playing coy with short list specifics. noncommittal on former general mike flynn. >> he's militarily excellent and i think he's a great guy. that doesn't mean i'm going to be choosing him but he's one of the people i look at. >> reporter: but trump tells "the washington post" he wants someone more political. maybe new jersey governor chris christie. >> good afternoon. >> reporter: auditioning in virginia as trump in his most recent remarks tries to strike a balance on recent police shootings, acknowledging concerns from both officers and protesters. >> not only am i the law and order candidate, but i'm also the candidate of compassion. believe it. >> reporter: he's now predicting more violent protests this

summer as security presence intensify in cleveland. the convention just six days out. with trump still struggling to bring together the gop. one former rival now vowing to sit this election out. >> neither for me. you're not going to get me to change that. >> reporter: jeb bush also telling our nicolle wallace he believes conservatism is dead. at least temporarily. and that concern with the gop presumptive nominee reflected to a degree here in cleveland where some delegates now starting to arrive are ready for a fight. the never-trump movement's last stand. it is not likely they'll have any success in trying to oust trump but they are getting back-up this morning from the senator from nebraska, matt sass, now urging delegates to fight for the conservative principles they believe in. >> halle, thank you. let us bring in nicolle wallace who was just mentioned. and bloomberg politics managing editor mark halperin who's

already in cleveland. good morning. jeb bush says he thinks conservatism is dead. a lot in the republican party are worried about that with donald trump as their nominee. do you get the sense as he zeros in on a running mate that there is more at stake for him in this choice than there is for hillary clinton? >> i do. i think we focus on the names and play this guessing game, but i think the central decision is which way does he go? does he try to solve his one political problem which is that people like jeb bush don't think he's a real conservative? or does he try to underscore the brand that won him the nomination which is that he's an unpredictable wild card who's going to shake up washington. there are two very different paths. >> mark, i think that question was set up absolutely perfectly. assuming that a vp pick addresses some perceived deficit in the candidate, in your mind, what is the vulnerability that trump most badly needs to address with his vp pick? >> well, trump's biggest vulnerability goes to the main reason anyone should pick their running mate which is someone

who's perceived right away as someone who's qualified to be president. i think the bigge egest problem donald trump has is will he govern in a serious way if he is elected. al gore, dick cheney, joe biden, all of them when they were picked faced criticism but not one critic said that guy's not ready. think that's what is what trump should do. i think that's what he will do, pick someone who people see as ready to be president. >> let's make you go out on a limb a little bit more. could those names we're hearing more than any others, who's ready? >> pence is a governor. republicans love their governors. he's viewed -- i think we put him in the safe category. that's the safe choice. christie's probably the one that in his gut he probably most wants to pick. he's been the closest thing to a partner that he's had as a candidate but he has some baggage with bridgegate. i'd put gingrich and flynn

behind those two. >> mark, is there someone you think atop of trump's list? >> let me check my devices. make sure there is no last-minute information. i think mike pence is. i think if trump goes with his gut and his feelings he'll pick christie. if he goes with his head -- i think it is possible the show man has a surprise in his back pocket. pence. >> let me ask you about hillary clinton and the endorsement by bernie sanders. it's been more than 30 days and sanders is finally coming around. can he convincingly endorse her and make that sales pitch for her today, mark? >> i think sanders is warm and fuzzy today and he's going to pull it off. he's not, right? he's not one that normally shows a lot of embrace. but look, his supporters are serious and there's policy differences still between sanders and clinton. much more than there ever were between obama and clinton. i think a lot of his supporters will be disappointed but today

will go a long way towards bringing many of his people into the tent. clinton needs them. >> nicolle, is bernie sanders going to be warm and fuzzy today? >> no way. >> mark, thank you. nicolle, thank you as well. a michigan courthouse will be closed today in the wake of a deadly shooting. an inmate being moved from a holding cell managed to wrestle a gun away from a sheriff's deputy, opened fire killing two bailiffs and injuring at least two others. here's nbc's ron mott with the story. >> officer down! officer down! >> reporter: this morning the berrien county courthouse is the newest addition to america's mass shooting catalog. caught on cell phone video from the parking lot outside. when it was over, an inmate had shot and killed two bailiffs, joseph zangaro, 61, and ron kienzle, 63, both retired cops. >> our hearts are torn apart. they were our friends. they were my colleagues. i have known them for over 30

years. >> reporter: officials say the shooter, 45-year-old larry darnell gordon, was in custody and being escorted from a holding cell to a court appearance when he grabbed a sheriff deputy's gun and opened fire. they say he also tried to take hostages. the deputy, 41-year-old father of five, james atterberry jr., was wounded in the arm. a female civilian was also struck by gunfire. the gunman's ex-wife speaking out. >> i don't want the press to paint a picture of him as an angry and violent person. nobody knows the truth because they weren't there. >> not everybody that goes into the courtroom is handcuffed. >> reporter: new concerns and questions this morning on the latest in a deadly stretch of confrontations between law enforcement and people they're sworn to protect and serve. for "today," ron mott, nbc news, st. joseph, michigan. there are some big developments in the uk this week. teresa may is set to become britain's second female prime minister after margaret that

mucher. tomorrow after only her only competitor withdrew from the race. may will replace david cameron who announced his resignation following that brexit referendum. cameron initially said he'd step up by october but moved up the timeline when may was left with a clear path to the office. the conservative party leader said monday she's honored and humbled to be chosen. here at home, attorney general loretta lynch is in the hot seat today on capitol hill. a house judiciary committee expected to grill lynch over her controversial meeting with former president bill clinton as well as the department's decision not to bring charges against hillary clinton for using private e-mails while serving as secretary of state. committee's also likely to ask lynch about police interactions with the minority community following a violent week that brought that issue to the forefront. we have some important news for millions of drivers today. new tests show small suvs did poorly in headlight tests. insurance institute for highway

safety says none of the 21 small suvs tested earned its highest ranking. the ford escape, honda crv, hyundai tucson and mazda cx3 performed best but more that be half of the suvs tested received the lowest ranking. high-tech headlights did not necessarily perform better. shifting gears, al's back from his vacation. >> we've had some severe weather to talk about last night and more today. in fact, take a look at this video. you see a barn destroyed. this is in litchfield, minnesota, about an hour west of minneapolis. these storms fired up at least two of them yesterday. we're going to be looking at some more severe weather firing up today in the plains. we've already got some severe weather moving foreign policy gre from green bay down to wichita, part of a system that will die down but refire up later this afternoon from wichita to peoria, brief tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds.

tomorrow an even wider swath from chicago, kansas city, des moines, st. louis, 27 million people at risk for damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes. this front becomes stationary. a lot of warm, moist air comping in. looking at strong gusty winds and strong storms firing up tomorrow and a lot of heavy rain. in some areas we're talking upwards ever four to five inches of rain. that could make for some flash flooding. we'll watch that over the next three days. we're getting to your

scheduled to speak at that service. hillary clinton's lead in the presidential race is slipping according to our latest poll. she's ahead of donald trump but just by three points nationally. 47%-44%. meantime, she is expected to pick up an endorsement from former rival bernie sanders today. he'll join her at a rally in new hampshire. and former fox news anchor gretchen carlson has posted a short video on social media. in the wake of her lawsuit against fox news ceo roger ales. obviously the audio on that video not working but we will tell you that carlson claims he sexually harassed her and fired her when she refused his sexual advances. he says the accusations are false and offensive. now more to the pokemon

phenomenon and the problems it's causing. >> that's right. the game is hugely popular. many don't realize your safety could be at stake. experts say it is more than just bumps and bruises from running into someone or something but there are also privacy and security red flags. pokemon go has been out for just six days and it's become a national addiction. it surpassed twitter, tinder and snapshot going to number one in the apple and android app stores. but what many parents and kids don't realize when they're on the app is that there are security risks that may come with the game. >> look. i got it. i got it. you see that? >> reporter: while the app fosters real-life social interactions it can also attract unwanted strangers. this 17-year-old says he and his friends are all completely obsessed with pokemon go. >> it is basically the main stat cuss quo for everyone around us right now, are you playing pokemon go, what team are you on, how much pokemon do you

have? >> reporter: the rival game gets them moving leading this emto local landmarks to unlock new battles and join new teams. but police warn that criminals are using the app to lure people to unfamiliar places with hopes of catching a pokemon character like this one. >> i got it. i got it! >> reporter: players and parents should be aware of an in-game feature called the lure module which increases the likelihood of a pokemon appearance. any user can create a lure spot, and that can be used to draw in unsuspecting victims to a specific location. >> it brings people together but of course that safety issue is why i walk around with multiple friends because it is like hey, i don't know who you are, i don't know what you do. this may be an uncomfortable situation for me to be in. >> reporter: that's exactly why this couple plays with their two kids. >> you don't know who is watching your children. they have to be aware of their surroundings. >> reporter: and one more rule from mom and dad. >> i've learned my lesson on not

connecticut. it began a four decade saga that resulted in the conviction of a neighbor, michael skakel, 15 at the time of the murder, convicted at the age of 41. the case brings the inner section of wealth, privilege and one of america's most famous families. michael skakel is a kennedy cousin. his conviction has now been set aside because a judge ruled he didn't get an adequate defense. now prosecutors trying to have that conviction reinstated. but his cousin, robert kennedy jr., is out with an explosive new book today called "framed," why michael skakel spent over a decade in prison for a murder he didn't commit. in the book, kennedy, a former prosecutor, lays out the case why his cousin couldn't have killed martha moxley that night. kennedy says i shouldn't take his word for it, i should look at the facts. >> what i believe is completely irrelevant. you know, people should not trust what i believe. i have a relationship with michael. i strongly believe that he's

olympic gymnast of all time, does it seem like that was so long ago? >> in some ways it feels like yesterday. you close your eyes and you can smell the sweat and the chalk of the arena. but in other ways it seems like a lifetime ago. >> kerri, you all made history together, the first u.s. gymnastics team to ever get a team gold medal. what does that accomplishment mean to you still today? >> i think that gold medal really changed the trajectory of all of our lives. >> amanda, you were the captain of this squad, the leader. when it came to choosing the team captain, everybody put the names in the hat. you chose shannon. everybody else chose you. >> i knew i wasn't the b.e.t. a best athlete but i was honored that they feel the i could be a great leader to the team. >> dominique, you were just teeny, tiny. >> even at 14, i knew when we

walked into that georgia dome with 33,000 people cheering only for usa we were part of something magnificent and truly a big part of history. >> you know, when i speak about this team i say out of all my three olympic teams this was the one team that put their egos aside. and this is the one team that should have had the biggest medal. 55 medals. >> where do you keep those medals? >> when my kids aren't wearing them. >> do they wear them around? >> from time to time. but the funny thing is my son will take the gold and hand me the silver. they've learned that much. >> shannon, you've been through a lot health wise and with ovarian cancer. how are you doing now? >> i'm doing great. we celebrate the 20th anniversary v of the '96 olympic team but i just separacelebrate years cancer free. i'm really blessed. >> kind of puts things in perspective. >> kerri, it fell on you. you had the last vault. tell me about the pressure of that moment.

>> that vault signifies a lot more than people understand. because finally when all eyes were on me, i dealt with the pressure around now how i view myself around what i'm capable of is very different because of that vault. >> and j.c., to think about how much your life has changed from that moment, from standing up on that podium with the gold medal around your neck, can you reflect on that? >> you know, that moment led us into who we are today and we learned how to work hard, how to manage our time, just being disciplined. i'm very grateful that i was able to be a part of it. >> amy, speaking of legacies, you have two moves that still young girls do. the chow. what does that mean to you? >> it's just really cool. i mean my coach and i weren't aiming to do that at any point. it just kind of happened. it really is an honor. >> amy chow's gymnastics could still hang on this sport. we need you for bars this year.

course it is a gabriel alone thriller. but you have a female heroin who kind of takes center stage. >> i sort of structured the book differently and i moved my long-time heroin to the side for a couple hundred pages and i sent a woman -- a westerner -- into the caliphate. i recruited her, turned her from a jewish -- french-jewish doctor into a palestinian-arab militant and fed her into the belly of the beast. and it was -- i have a reputation of going to all the places that i write about. suffice it to say, i did not go to the caliphate to set those scenes but it was an interesting writing exercise. >> probably a good choice. i wouldn't really recommend going to syria at the moment. >> no. >> you mentioned international locales. i always get a kick out of this because you do go to some pretty cool places in the name of research. >> i do. >> you have sardinia in this book. >> santorini.

here at the "today" show professional chefs are in and out of our kitchen all day, but it takes a bit of team of work to get those dishes out you see on live tv. today we have some of the tricks we use with our chief stylist, ali simpson. this is right off of our studio 1a. we have the other kitchen upstairs. this came out of something you did and it started with cookies and a way to make your life easier with fresh cookie dough. >> yes. so i have a couple of tips that all come from our food team. tina, courtney, monica, the four of us. and so one thing we love to use -- scoops. it just helps keep things efficient, organized, clean. we simply just scoop, and then we often make things in double batches so that we can have things set to go on the ready

for any sort of last-minute requests that happen. >> we put these in the freezer. then after they're frozen, you put them in ziploc bags so that any time you into ed to do fresh chocolate chip cookieses, boom. >> yeah. ready to go. i love to bake them from frozen. and one more tip. we also like to when we make things in bulk store it in the freezer, generally flat so that we can fit a lot of them in there. it's nice when it's flat also because it will thaw a little bit more quickly because of all the surface space. >> you make double batches, freeze them up and now you're set. did i lock this? it locked! there's another hack. make sure you have the key to your freezer. let's see if we can get back. not that big a deal. second, keeping things cold. we have a baggie with ice in it. this is great for when we have segments outside we have to keep it cold. we don't want things getting soggy so we simply put ice down
