it is a job president obama has had many times before, bringing healing to a city and a nation in mourning, after the deadly ambush of five police officers in dallas. president obama's traveling to dallas now in an effort to offer some measure of comfort to the people there. good morning. i'm vai sikahema. president obama cut short a european trip because of a tragedy in dallas. he'll be joined at a memorial today by a former president. nbc's sarah rosatio is live in dallas on what officials hope will be a day of healing. >> the president took off in air force one a little more than a half hour ago. he's expected to arrive here at

rosario, back to you. >> and nbc 10 will have live coverage of the memorial service for the five murdered dallas police officers. it is expected to start around 2:00 this afternoon and you can watch it live right here on nbc 10, online, and also on the nbc 10 app. and new this morning, about ten members of the ben salem and upper southampton police departments are packing up and driving to dallas to attend the funerals for the fallen officers. they loaded their motorcycles on to a trailer for the journey to texas. the officers are making the trip as a sign of solidarity. they are expected to come back on sunday. and happening now in chester, delaware county. a group of citizens is showing support for police. the church group, including many children, marched to police headquarters a short time ago. nbc 10's pamela osborne was with him this look for her live report coming up in our next half hour. we're getting more details about a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy overnight following a basketball game. two other teens were hurt. sky force 10 was over the scene in southwest philadelphia, about

10:00 last night. police tell us the victims had just finished a game at the playground on 61st street near baltimore avenue when a gunman jumped out of an alley and started shooting. so far, there have been no arrests. and philadelphia police are investigating a hotel scare in center city. someone left bomb-making materials on the roof of a hotel late last night. sky force 10 was over the hyatt at bellevue. there was a lot of police activity on the ground, but it's what officers found on the roof that is of biggest concern. philadelphia police are questioning a man and a woman they caught with smoke bombs and chemicals that police say could be used to make pipe bombs. and crews put out a house fire at east lansdowne, delaware county last night. flames broke out at the two-story home on lewis avenue around 1:45 this morning. no one was hurt. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> another sunny day down the

shore. temperatures are climbing as we take a live look right now at cape may. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley is here now with the forecast. we start in the 60s and now climbing into the 80s. >> it was a nice cool start this morning with clear skies overnight. we have seen a few clouds, some of them in this live view of center city. those are not rain clouds, just some fair weather clouds. and frawley stadium in delaware, bright sunshine there. no game today. a warm afternoon, even for rehoboth beach, which warmed from the 70s and will be heading into the upper 70s to low 80s this afternoon. already near 80 for the lehigh valley, the suburbs, delaware at 79 and upper 70s in south jersey. right now, philadelphia, 81 degrees at philadelphia international. still on the little bit cooler than chestnut hill, but not by much. and 80 in bustleton. we will see the temperatures climb, beyond yesterday's level, and the humidity also coming up a bit, too. 86 degrees at 2:00 in philadelphia. be in the 80s for the suburbs

expressway, speeds are in the 40s there. very minor delays for septa. war minister dealing with 11-minute delays. all the rest of mas transit on or close to schedule. watch for construction at 3:30 over the tacony-palmyra. we're losing some lanes, so you'll see some delays there. from our delaware bureau, a 46-year-old volunteer firefighter is dead after he fell a helicopter during a training exercise. here's a picture of that helicopter that was used during yesterday's training. firefighters were conducting a routine exercise at the coastal airport in georgetown when tim mcclanahan fell out of the chopper and on to a grassy area when he stepped out on to the helicopter skid. he was a longtime member of the lewis fire department. the trial of pennsylvania attorney general kathleen kane will begin next month. nbc 10 confirmed it will start august 8th at the county

courthouse in norristown. the judge in kane case set the date after a closed door conference with lawyers from both sides. kane is accused of leaking secret grand jury information and lying about it under oath. she's denied any wrongdoing. a philadelphia judge unsealed documents that revealed more about when the late joe paterno was allegedly first told about sex abuse complaints against his assistant coach, jerry sandusky. the records from an insurance lawsuit reportedly show a man testified in court in 2014 that penn state football coach joe paterno ignored his accusations of sexual assault against jerry sandusky back in 1976, before the former penn state coach died in 2011, he told a newspaper that he didn't hear about children until 2001. sandusky is serving 30 to 60 years on child molestation conviction. in montgomery today, concerns about water contamination will be on the

agenda in upper dublin township. officials from aqua water plan to attend a public meeting there tonight. they'll be speaking about toxins detected in the water supply that may be linked to contamination from the old willow grove naval air station. and happening today, emergency sirens will be tested at two nuclear plants, locketed on the same site in south jersey. you'll hear the noise coming from the salem and hope creek nuclear generating stations between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. 37 sirens within ten miles of the plants will go off for three to five minutes. big developments happening right now on decision 2016. the key endorsement former secretary of state hillary clinton is picking up as we await an announcement from donald trump about who will be his running mate. plus, made in manhattan. the event last night that brought new yorkers out in droves. we've got a warm day today, but it's going to turn hot.

hampshire senator gjeanne shahen is speaking right now. this follows weeks of negotiations between the clinton and sanders campaigns and clinton hopes to win over sanders supporters in her battle with donald trump. in a new survey, a tracking poll shows the race for the white house is tightening. if the election were held today, clinton would get 47% of the vote to 44% for trump. another survey shows mrs. clinton is struggling to gain support of younger americans. the poll by the jen fuller project at the university of chicago surveys americans between the ages of 18 and 30. it found just 26% of young whites had a positive opinion of mrs. clinton. 49% of hispanics viewed her positively. and donald trump could choose hi vice presidential pick soon. and there are signs that his short list is getting a little shorter. nbc's hallie jackson shows us who is still in the running. >> reporter: down to the final four, speculation swirling about

from the start of the republican national convention in cleveland. and our team of reporters will be covering the rnc all week long. look for live reports from my nbc 10 colleagues starting sunday night on nbc 10 news at 11:00. right now we're following breaking news out of italy, where two trains collided head-on, killing at least 20 people. the commuter trains crashed between the towns of andrea and corado. still photos show the train cars crumpled together like an accordion. a makeshift hospital was set up in a nearby field in order to treat the injured survivors. italy's premiere is promising a thorough investigation, as you look at some of those still pictures coming from italy. happening now, attorney general loretta lynch is on capitol hill to face questions about the decision to not charge secretary clinton over the use

of a private e-mail account. u.s. house members are also expected to ask lynch about how police deal with cases involving minorities after last week's deadly shootings in louisiana and in minnesota. last week, fbi director james comey testified to a house committee about clinton's e-mails. he said his investigators found clinton did e-mail classified information, but that they were -- that they found no evidence of criminal intent. a camera captured a tornado that tore through a part of minnesota. here's the video showing the funnel cloud destroying a barn. this was just one of several tornadoes reported in central minnesota last night. here it is. a round of severe weather swept through the upper midwest. and some of the worst damage is the small town of litchfield, minnesota. you can see roofs were blown off buildings and debris now litter people's yards. a semitruck was flipped on its side. residents say the damage is

unlike anything they've ever seen. and new yorkers took to the streets last night to photograph the much-anticipated event known as manhattanenge. that's when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the numbered street that run east and west on the city grid. it's a two-day event that happens twice a year. it's a photo bomb of intersterile proportions. images from nasa's deep space climate observatory show the moon traveling across the face of the earth. they also give a rare sun-lit look at the far side of the moon. the problem took the pictures on july 4th and 5th. we have sunshine and temperatures that are climbing. heading out right now, we're experiencing a quick warm-up from the 60s this morning, we're already in the 80s in philadelphia. much of the rest of the area is heading there, too. it's not just the temperature

that's increasing. increasing humidity, you can feel it today. it's going to be climbing today and again over the next couple of days. a warm summer evening, as that humidity will be higher, it will be dry tonight. a few scattered clouds this evening. pretty nice weather at citizens' bank park for the big concert tonight. 85 at 5:00. still seeing sunshine this evening. the sun sets at 8:30. that's when the temperatures start coming down. it won't be quite as cold overnight as it was this morning. won't be all that cool. right now we're seeing warmer temperatures in philadelphia and south jersey. in fact, it's two degrees warmer in the city compared to yesterday at this time. and running a little bit warmer in vineland and mt. holly. trenton, also up 4 degrees compared to yesterday. that's compared to a cool start in south jersey. 79 in turnersville, but look at pitman, vorhees, medford all into the 80s right now. it was in the 50s in princeton. now 80 degrees, now it's 82 for robbinsville. the temperatures are still climbing. we're heading into the middle to

upper 80s this afternoon. a few scattered clouds at times, but dry during the day today for philadelphia, the suburbs, and the lehigh valley. allentown, 86. and 88 for easton. in the lehigh valley, upper 80s. and new jersey, stay the same. 87 this afternoon for permton. cooler at the shore. the southerly winds will keep the temperatures right in the upper 70s for ocean city. just up to 80 in atlantic city. and a warming into the upper 80s for wilmington. we will see a few scattered clouds, but no sign of any wet weather, the satellite and radar show it is dry today. the next chance of showers, though, could be here as early as tomorrow. for today, the ten-day on 10, 87 this afternoon, closer to the 90-degree mark tomorrow. but expect to see some showers and thunderstorms develop. not everyone will see them, a better chance of them in the lehigh valley and the suburbs than in south jersey. near 90 tomorrow into the 90s for thursday. and another hot day on friday,

>> vai, i can tell you the family who lives in one part of this duplex started seeing large cracks forming on their walls overnight. that, of course, spooked them, so they left that apartment and look at what happened behind me just a few hours after they left. a house collapsing on itself. one of these sides was actually vacant, abandoned. the other had that family inside. and you can just look at all of this debris. luckily, nobody was injured. and if we look over here, that's where most of the family members are now staying. they're displaced for the time being. they're asking for the red cross to come here and they're telling us the debris started raining down from the sky >> we were standing there, the fire department was telling us to move back, move back, and the debris rained down all over the cars, my daughter, and my first hand. >> reporter: pg&e now here trying to shut down the gas lines and digging into the ground. the cleanup will take quite a long time. the family is looking for

followed for about 30 minutes, until three women and two men surrendered. no one was hurt. on friday, loved ones will gather for the funeral of an african-american man shot to death by police officers in baton rouge, louisiana. two white officers killed alton sterile one week ago, today. sterling's death was captured on video, sparking rt ining protes the country. in minnesota, prosecutors will be filing riot charges against protesters who stormed into a highway in st. paul over the weekend. the police killing of a black man there ignited the demonstration. and one local department got a show of support from a group that included many children. nbc 10's pamela osborne is live in chester delaware county this morning. pam, tell us more about how they're showing their support. >> reporter: vai, this was a

huge surprise. chester police thought that they were going to get a card or some kind of thank you from these kids. but what they ended up getting instead was a march of support. take a look. a group of nearly 30 kids from the temple of brotherly love church got together to show police that they support them and appreciate the work they do every day to keep everybody safe. pastor calvin williams says everything that has happened in the past week has been a little bit confusing for some of the kids that he has at his church, so he thought this introduction to police would be a great one. >> children should be not afraid of the police, but they should be looking to the police for help, any situation. >> reporter: and once they finished their walk, they headed all the way up to the fourth floor, where they surprised major marilyn lee. >> but all of this was overwh m overwhelming. like i said, with the youngman with the disability, if he can make the sacrifice and say, well, it's worth it to him,

you when those showers and possible thunderstorms are likely to occur when we come back in just a few minutes. >> defense secretary ash carter arrived in afghanistan today to meet with u.s. commanders, after president obama's noum last week that we would keep more than 8,000 troops in that country through the end of his term. carter was scheduled to meet with afghanistan's president, as well as the top u.s. commander in afghanistan. army general john nicholson. the visit is carter's second stop in a war zone in as many days. in iraq yesterday, carter announced that the u.s. would be sending more than 500 additional troops there in the coming days. and tomorrow, british interior minister teresa may, will become the second female prime minister in british history. this morning, may left her final cabinet meeting before moving into 10 downing street. as david cameron steps down. cameron is resigning after britain reject as his advice and voted on june 23rd to leave the

european union, plunging the country into political and economic uncertainty. it's tough enough for a sports fisherman to catch a great white shark, but try being a 6-year-old and actually doing it. blake white was holding the fishing rod on his grandfather's boat just off of cape cod on sunday when he got a bite. well, blake started to reel that bite in, what he thought was a big tuna. it turned out to be this 10-foot-long great white shark. >> well, i did pass the rod to my dad. because it was too heavy. >> i calmly told the kids to sit in the middle of the boat, down low, and we took a few pictures and as soon as we could get it in close enough, we cut the line and sent him on his way. >> did the right thing by handing the rod to his dad. the shark got caught on the boat's trolling rig for about 90 minutes before being set free. pretty scary. well, it could be a record-breaking day of shopping. forget black friday. it's christmas in july, as amazon prime day entices bargain

>> it's too small. way too small. people drive like maniacs on that road. >> reporter: penndot is considering a change to i-76, possibly using the shoulder as another lane. >> i'm a little skeptical. >> safety could be an issue. >> can you do this safely? >> we believe that we can. >> reporter: tonight at 11:00, the nbc 10 investigators look at where else the practice is in place and how feasible the change is here. >> that really throws up red flags, absolutely. for the investigators, storm sperns, nbc 10 news. women who give birth to their first child a few weeks early at a risk of delivering their second baby even earlier. researchers at uc san francisco followed more than 160,000 pregnant women over six years. those who deliver their firstborn at 37 or 38 weeks were two to three times more likely to have a preterm birth later. that risk was the same whether moms delivered naturally or were

induced early. premature birth is the leading cause of infant death. and pregnant women often rely on vitamins to improve their baby's health. but a new study suggests of the these might not be necessary. researchers from the uk found that some supplements including multi-vitamins showed no obvious benefits from healthy women and too much vitamin a can even cause harm to a fetus. instead, they say expecting mothers should focus on taking foe lick acid, vitamin d, and maintain a healthy diet. and new this morning, small suvs fared poorly in new headlight tests. the insurance policy institute for highway safety announced today that none of the 21 small suvs tested received the highest ranking. the ford escape, the honda crv, the hyundai tucson, and the mazda cx 3 performed best. more than half of the models tested received the lowest rating. the tests measure the amount of usable light provided by low and high beams on street roads and

curves. and happening today, amazon is hoping consumers take advantage of deals for its second annual prime day. the retailer is using the promotion to encourage people to sign up for amazon prime, which costs $99 a year for unlimited two-day free shipping. subscribers will get access to more than 100,000 deals, including bargains nearly every five minutes. some analysts project it will be amazon's biggest day ever. the company's stock closing at a record high on monday. well, thousands of girls and young women are getting an opportunity that could help them reach the top of their future career fields. nbc 10's katy zachary has a story on how a company called genheration is becoming an inspiration for so many girls. >> reporter: jessica penn is in high school and already an aspiring businesswoman.

classmates eliza brody and melody graves are right there with her, developing a prototype for a bracelet that measures uv exposure. >> right here would be the uv censor. >> reporter: all three girls are taking part in genheration discovery days next month. it's the brain childo warton grad, caitlin grasso, who began her company while in college. >> i think it can be hard for girls, that they fall victim to their own self-doubt. they might think, i can't be an engineer, i can't be a governor, i can't lead a tech company. and i want to sort of dispel those rumors and have them think anything is possible. >> reporter: to do that, grasso has set up tours at some of the most innovative companies in our area, where female executives thrive, like hartford fund, urban outfitters, and comcast, the parent company of nbc 10. up to 50 high school and college girls will be driven to each office, with the help from partner, bolt bus. >> each company gets an office tour, a panel of female

humidity, though. it is a bit steamier for lehigh valley and the suburbs, in the upper 70s. 80 in south jersey, and at the shore, we're seeing some 80s for upper township and cape may point is at 80 degrees, while right on the beach, upper 70s at ocean city and atlantic city is 76 degrees. gradually turning warmer over the next couple of days, and that includes today, a warm and humid one. the winds have shifted. it's more of a southerly flow today, so the humidity is coming up, and the temperatures are being boosted. and it's a trend that will continue tomorrow and over the next few days, as it gradually turns hotter. philadelphia will be heading into the 90s after two days in the upper 80s. thursday and friday, that's when we'll be in the middle 90s. same story in delaware, to dover. a chance for some showers and thunderstorms tomorrow. 90s for thursday and friday. it's the beginning of a heat wave that you'll feel in the lehigh valley, as well. thursday and friday will be the hottest days. but at the shore, 80s for wildwood. 82 degrees today.

it'll get hotter, but it will fall short of the 90s for the shore communities. for today, we're watching a few scattered clouds, especially inland. you have to look close to see them, though. not rain with those clouds. high pressure will stay with us for today. we could see some showers and thunderstorms develop later tomorrow, especially in the northern and western suburbs. you can see some of that activity way to the south this morning, and farther to the north, into west virginia and kentucky. but that shower activity not here today. the radar and satellite will stay dry for us today. it's tomorrow that we could see those showers and thunderstorms enter the picture for parts of the area. for today, futurecast shows dry, at 8:00 this evening, 79 degrees by 8:00 and then dropping into the lower 70s overnight tonight. even some 60s north and west. still dry by noontime, by midnight tonight, but by noontime tomorrow, we could see the first showers. in fact, earlier in the morning,

might see a few sprinkles to the west. the best chance of showers will be coming through the afternoon, tomorrow afternoon, developing areas to the north and west of the lehigh valley and some of the suburbs. your ten-day on ten, there's the warm-up. 80s today and upper 80s again tomorrow, closer to 90 degrees. a chance of showers and thunderstorms will be with us again on thursday. and that's when the temperatures soar. 94 for thursday and friday. and still on the 90s saturday, but there's a chance we will not reach into the 90s for sunday, with occasional showers and thunderstorms possible. and then typical summer heat for monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, with a chance of more showers later in the week. we'll be right back.
