moments he and two other boys were shot after a basketball game last night. good evening, i'm jim rosenfield. a 15-year-old was killed, and his mother has a message for the people who murdered her son. all new at 6:00, monique braxton just spoke with the mother and she is is joining us where family and friends are gathering for a vigil. monique. >> reporter: hi, jim. more than 100 people, including tahir's mother, this is where tahir barns was watching a basketball game and when he left with his teammates, he was gunned down. >> outgoing, funny. loved the game of basketball. he was trying to pursue his rapping career. >> reporter: steven and tanisha thomas. >> my heart is in so much pain. i want those people or whoever did this to my son, you will be caught.

>> reporter: 15-year-old tahir barns was shot in the head, after walking with friends after a basketball game near 60th and baltimore, when homicide investigators say as many as den ten shots were fired from a semi-automatic weapon. investigators believe he was ambushed because of bad blood after an out come of a game last week. >> he was with the 60th and baltimore team that won. there was a fight on last thursday as a result, members of the 56th street team, we don't know if they were teammates or people that came to watch the team, afterwards pulled out a gun. >> it just doesn't make sense, you know. you play a game, you win or lose. you play another game. >> reporter: one teen also shot, returned to the court with his mother for the vigil for tahir. >> they start shooting, like a group of guys, 15 of them. >> too much killing. young ages. >> reporter: ball league organizers and activists are devastated. >> gun violence is crazy.

it is crazy. you see, they carry guns like we carry wallets and i.d. everybody has a gun. >> reporter: back out here live, you're watching the vigil underway. tahir's mother told us he would have been entering the tenth grade. one other team who was hit by the gunshots last night is in stable condition at penn presbyterian. right now, there are several police out here. detectives have been in the neighborhood. they're urging anyone with information, all witnesses to step forward. live now. i know it because of what we've seen in dallas. how all of you have shown us the meaning of perseverance. >> a call to all americans tonight to open their hearts to each other. today, president obama spoke at a memorial service for five fallen dallas officers, saying he knows this country can do better. the president honored the

officers, saying our country asks police to do too much. and that we do too little ourselves. nbc 10 keith jones more on the president's message at the memorial. keith. >> jim, president obama tried to console a country here. grieving with the country, including the shooting of black men. as you can see, the president was greeted with the standing ovation as he got up and speak to the packed arena. he paid tribute by calling them heros. their families seated in the first row watched. he tried to have a hopeful tone to increased tensions in our nation, people will grow to respect and empathize with each other. i'm here to insist we are not as divided as we think. i know that, because i know america. i know how far we've come against impossible odds. >> among those joining the

conference. an update on the jersey sandusky sex abuse scandal. newly released court documents, former football coach joe paterno may have learned about the abuse as early as 1976, and did nothing. a man named john doe in these documents testified that sandusky sexually abused him when he was 14. he told paterno about the incident the very next day, but his response was he accidents want to hear about it. he previously claimed the first inkling he had was in 2001. a lawyer for paterno's family denies the claims from today's documents. putting their lives on the line for others safety. the dangerous training after a local firefighters death. >> debris went all over the car,

department is planning a funeral for one of its own. tim mcclanahan was killed in a training exercise monday night. the 46-year-old father of two fell out of a helicopter at the airport. lewis chief says on the water, in the air or thick of a fire, mcclanahan gave his all for the people of southern delaware. after the crash, we wanted to give you a closer look to the dangerous training that first responders go through to keep you safe. police and firefighters teamed up for high intensity training in montgomery county. she has their story, all new at 6:00. >> this is for the public. not for us. >> these men have no idea what they could be in for. >> we are a relatively small group of people but pretty tight. text messages help a lot. when something happens between a
