back where it belongs. a jersey shore family speaks out after their beloved american flag is returned. familiar sounds today. we begin with your first alert weather. the rain coming down in parts of the area. on main street, ambler this afternoon, the umbrellas were out in full force. >> right now, the first alert weather team is still tracking rain and the possibility of storms. here's a live look at the nbc 10 first alert radar. >> let's go right to meteorologist sheena parveen on what's happening in your neighborhood right now. what can we expect? >> we do have showers around right now. some of them are on the heavier side. a lot of the heaviest rain that we saw earlier in?xdelaware, if you look at the past two hours here, a lot of that heavy rain has already started lightening up. especially through parts of south jersey. thunderstorms down in maryland

approaching sussex county again. sussex county has already seen a lot of heavy rain today. we also are looking at flooding issues there. precip rate is over two inches an hour. mills boro seeing some of the heavier rain, too. so we'll be watching that closely. south jersey, spotty showers through atlanta county, up to philadelphia. light steady rainfall around the major interstates. wet roadways tonight. the evening commute wet, i'm sure slow going, too. showers on the heavier side in parts of berks county, near allentown. we'll be watching these as we go through tonight. we already have a flood advisory out for these areas. up to two inches of rain here. we'll watch that closely with any street or creek flooding. for tomorrow, it will be a different story. a lot hotter than today, more humid, excessive heat warnings are out feeling more like triple digits. now, join nbc 10 exclusive.

do you know this man? police say he's been ripping off churches in montgomery and delaware counties and they need your help to put a name to this face. >> deanna durante joins us in ambler where police say this poor box bandit has hit there at least three times, deanna? >> reporter: at least. they believe it could be many more times. even though there was a security camera near that donation box, people here didn't think to go back and look at that video until an alert parishioner snapped a photo of a man who didn't belong here. that's when they looked at the video and discovered they had been victimized. police say hoe's a special kind of thief. >> preying on churches. >> reporter: he was spotted by a parishioner on july 6th. >> he didn't recognize this guy. and he definitely knew there was something not right about him. >> reporter: the church official at st. anthony's church scanned the security video and found this guy helped himself to a wad of cash from of the box.

they found he had been here before and helped himself to cash back then, too. >> somebody using the kindness of people to his advantage. >> reporter: and police say even after he had been spotted, after this picture was snapped, the guy came back on july 9th. and again was caught on tape stealing from the same donation box. his boldness is what is forcing police to makeç a plea now. >> we need help sometimes. >> reporter: as police reached out to law enforcement in the area they discovered this guy was seen in a delaware county church back in may. a pastor there took this photo of the man. police said when he was caught with his hand inside the donation box there, he told the pastor he'd dropped his ring. the man left in a newer black suv. and if he was need, he likely would not have had a car to make his getaway. >> a rather nice car. >> reporter: they say crimes like these could be happening

and going unnoticed. you think there's other counties out there? >> oh, yeah. yeah. unfortunately, guys like this, you know, they take advantage. >> reporter: investigators are hoping this guy's run ends now. he's believed to be in his 40s, and he's driving that black suv. if you know who he is, call police. reporting live in ambler, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. a beloved barber in allentown was sitting outside his shop when police say a man walked up to him and shot him dead. witnesses say eric wagner was sitting outside on a chair greeting customers when a man asking for cigarettes walked op him and unloaded almost a dozen bullets. the barber had recently opened the shop and he leaves behind a young son and a wife. >> the son, family, his wife, crazy.

now they got to go through this. it's a big loss. i hope we get justice, though. >> they're following up on lots of leads and sifting through evidence. but no arrests yet. decision 2016 coverage now. a new poll shows the race between hillary clinton and donald trump is actually getting closer here in pennsylvania. nbc 10's lauren mayk is here to break it down. lauren? >> donald trump and hillary clinton are tied in ohio. with clinton losing support since spring. but in pennsylvania, these polls show hillary clinton's lead over donald trump has shrunk since april. take a look at these new numbers. she comes in at 45% to trump's 36%, with 19% undecided. and now look what happens when you put -- include more candidates also running for president. clinton comes in at 43%, down slightly. trump has 35%, down one point.

body of tim mcclanahan from the medical examiner's office to a funeral home in lewis. the 46-year-old father of two died in a helicopter rescue training exercise monday night. he fell out of a delaware state police helicopter at the sussex county airport. smokers will pay the price for a package if pennsylvania lawmakers have their way. a vote is expected today that would include a $1 per pack tax increase on cigarettes. the deal would also extend the state's 6% sales tax to digital downloads of music, video books and apps. it was raised back in 2014. the extra money now goes to philadelphia schools according to a report released last week by the city controller. that tax generated nearly $59 million for the schools back in 2015. you may not know the name jon dorenbos, but his new claim to fame could be on stage of

donald trump is making a show of hiring a running mate. today trump was at the indiana governor's mansion of mike expense. >> steve handelsman has the latest on that and new polls that are great news for trump. >> reporter: a thumbs up from donald trump today after he interviewed indiana governor mike pence about the vp job. trump's children joined in the vetting. pence wants to run with trump. >> i'm honored to be considered. and humbled to be considered. but (he conversations that we've had between two families is something we'll cherish the rest of our lives no matter the outcome. >> i don't know whether he'll be

governor or vice president. >> reporter: newt gingrich and new jersey governor chris christie are also talking with the trumps. meanwhile, about the supreme court justice ruth bader ginsberg, trump tweeted, her mind is shot, resigned. "the new york times" editorialized trump is right about ginsberg. inappropriate said the "washington post." breaking a high court taboo on political comment, ginsberg said she doesn't want to think about trump winning the white house. but hillary clinton in illinois today is in trouble. the nbc news "wall street journal" maris poll finds clinton's lead over trump down to 9 in pennsylvania, down to 3 in iowa. the race tied in must-win ohio. that tie echoed in the poll that puts trump ahead in florida and pennsylvania. >> republicans who want to dump him at the convention, much harder to do so when it shows he's very competitive in the

battleground state polls. >> reporter: trump stronger as delegates gather in cleveland. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. joining us live from cleveland is our gop political analyst jim schultz. jim, the talks around trump's vp is reaching a peak at this point. who do you see the front-runner for the vp selection? >> reporter: i think it's very clear at this point that the front-runner of the three is governor mike pence from indiana. he brings a lot to the table. he's a conservative. he can galvanize the conservative base. he's also a chief executive. he's been in washington as a congressman. he understands washington. he's cut taxes, he's created jobs, he creates a very good narrative going into the convention. but donald trump doesn't have any bad choices in the other two either. >> talk about governor chris christie. what are the pros and cons of having him on the ticket? >> reporter: governor christie brings a lot to the ticket.

he's a tremendous campaigner. he's tenacious. he's a wonderful, great debater. we saw that throughout the presidential primary contest. and would bring a lot of energy to the campaign. on the other side of that coming from the blue state of new jersey, probably seen a little more moderate than others. he would probably not galvanize the base as much as a mike pence but brings a lot to the table. >> jim, how important is this vç selection for trump as we head into the rnc next week? in the past we've seen mccain select palin, i mean, is the magnitude as high right now, is the pressure on for trump? >> reporter: i don't know that the pressure's on, but it would be very good for the grass roots to pick someone who's going to bring energy to the party, going into the convention. and it could really help him with a bump. the bump post-convention bump with the base post-convention. >> all right. jim schultz live in cleveland. thanks for joining us, jim.

and jim will be joining us during our live coverage from the rnc. we'll see him there. they're all headed to cleveland. look for their live reports sunday night at 11:00. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. we're still dealing with the showers around the area. some of them are not nearly as heavy as they were earlier this afternoon. we're still tracking the rain. a live look at center city, overcast skies, rain at philly international. while we're tracking the storms for you, your seven-day forecast is scrolling at the bottom of the screen, so you'll never miss that. right now, look at radar. we had light rain in new jersey. also through delaware. a lot of the heavy rain has moved out with the exception of southern parts of sussex county. philadelphia seeing the lighter rainfall right now. and heavier stuff in parts of lancaster county. so if we zoom in here to the philadelphia area, this is where we kind of see the steady light rain across the major interstates.

what we're dealing with in other sections, a little bit on the heavier side. so now we look closer to lancaster county. these are some heavy showers and storms. notice the overall movement. nothing is very organized. so we have some showers trying to move to the north and east that are kind of dying out in berks county, lehigh valley. then we have heavier showers around lancaster that aren't really moving. so they're kind of stationary at this moment, with some thunderstorms. so, again, not very organized. that's why we don't expect that severe weather activity. but we have seen quite a bit of rain that's been very slow to move. we still have the flood advisory out until 8:15. parts of chester county, upper montgomery county and bucks county and berks county. we could see localized street and creek flooding. there is the threat of localized flooding with the showers around right now. but again, they're either moving incredibly slow or fairly stationary. nothing too organized. we don't expect that for the rest of the evening. there's future weather by about 9:00 p.m.

most of new jersey and delaware should be in the clear for the most part. i think we'llç still have lingering showers north and west of philadelphia. drying out a little bit more overnight tonight, and then tomorrow the humidity goes up a lot. the heat goes up a lot. and that's going to make it feel even hotter. through the afternoon, there's a chance we could see a couple of showers around. i don't think it will be nearly as widespread as today, but combined with a little bit more sunshine we'll see a lot of heat. the excessive heat warning is out for the counties shaded in the pink coloring, surrounding orange areas heat advisories. hot tomorrow and friday. temperatures mid-90s. humidity making it feel like anywhere in 100 to 104 degrees. this is potentially dangerous. avoid staying outside for several hours at a time. make sure you stay hydrated and stay cool. here's just an example. today we've gotten to the mid-80s. it's been a little cooler out with the rain. tomorrow, 93, feeling like 101. friday, 94, feeling like 100 degrees. and by saturday, we still expect

the low 90s. but the humidity will be a little bit less saturday. you will notice a difference with the comfort level. not as humid. neighborhood temperatures tomorrow, still expect the mid-90s in the forecast. 95 tacony. lehigh valley 93. if you're in robbinsville, 93 degrees. atlantic city upper 80s tomorrow. hot day at the shore. and humid. dover coming in 92 degrees tomorrow and partly cloudy. your philadelphia five-day forecast, along with the shore, philadelphia staying in the 90s for friday. 94 degrees along the shore. near 90 on friday. with high humidity. and now we're looking at your weekend. if you're staying around the philadelphia area, around 90 degrees, both saturday and sunday. along the shore, temperatures mostly in the mid-80s this weekend. there is a chance we could see a late day shower at the shore on sunday. but i don't think it's going to be very much as far as the rest of the area's concerned. coming up, we'll take a look at the heat in the forecast for the

rest of the week, for the rest of our neighborhood sections as well as the weekend forecast for everybody else, straight ahead. nbc 10 learned a woman who fell to her death in the grand canyon last week grew up in delaware county. she was hiking with friends when she lost her footing. rangers later found her body 400 feet below. the 35-year-old lived in morton. and attended high school there. she later moved to orlando. jessica romans said burns fell just after the group snapped a picture near a grand canyon landmark. she says her friend will never be forgotten. >> every sunset, every moonriseç every sparkle, that will be her. she's everywhere still. >> the national park service and the local county medical examiner are investigating burns' death. with just 23 days until the olympic opening ceremony, an update tonight about the zika virus in rio.

the centers for disease control and prevention said the risk of visitors becoming infested is low. the games are held in august and september. brazil's winter months. the cooler and drier weather typically reduces the number of mosquitoes. despite the low risk, pregnant women are still discouraged from traveling abrought. tom brady's four-game suspension is standing at least for now. the second circuit court of appeals denied brady's petition for a new hearing on his suspension. the nfl suspended brady last year after an investigation found brady likely knew footballs for the 2015 afc championship game were being deflated. brady has 90 days to file a petition to the u.s. supreme court for a final appeal. one of the biggest complaints consumers have. the annoying robocalls. find out why the problem is getting worse. plus, dyno damage. what vandals did to this display outside a berks county library.

robocalls, most of us can't stand them, and a new report actually says they're getting worse. complaints to the ftc about robocalls and marketing scams are up 41% from last year. technology enables scammers to place multiple calls today to find victims. nbc news correspondent olivia sterns caught up with a security expert whose firm specializes in fraud prevention and telephone scams. >> we're seeing them be able to use technology to their advantage to target more victims in a shorter amount of time. we're also seeing indications that would-be fraudsters are seeing that their fraudster

you're seeing a thunderstorm developing. it's not moving too much, though. in sussex, storms in southern parts of the county, closer to the maryland line. most of sussex county up near georgetown, seaford, ridgeford seeing improvements from earlier today. the heavy rain is just to the south. the beaches seeing the steady light rain. rest of delaware clearing out from the heavy rain earlier. south jersey clearing out from the lighter rainfall that moved in. the philadelphia area still seeing some spotty light showers that extends up the major interstates i-95, up to trenton and lower bucks county. montgomery and bucks county, still dealing with the lighter rainfall. some heavier spots around milford across 476 and through the lehigh valley. they're kind of breaking up in nature. berks county did have a flood advisory that just got canceled a second ago. we're going to keep watching these showers, though, because some of them have been providing

localized street increased flooding. butç i think that threat is starting to wind down. tomorrow we have an excessive heat warning, and also a heat advisory basically meaning it will be really hot and really humid. it will make temperatures feel around triple digits. this is the type of weather you want to avoid several hours outside and stay hydrated. we'll talk more about this going into the weekend coming up. you may have noticed quite the building boom in philadelphia. >> now we're getting our first look inside one of those buildings that's changing the city's skyline. monique braxton joins us now with more. monique? >> reporter: hey, denise. the market east just like the building over my shoulder promises to be a mix of retail and residential. we found like every other subject everyone has an opinion about the new construction boom in the city. >> we saw about five roads that were closed off. we were trying to get an uber. the uber couldn't reach us.

>> reporter: traffic shut down streets and congestion seemed to be a part of life in philadelphia these days. it seems the city of brotherly love has rolled out a red carpet to builders. >> it's going to be a pain, you know, with construction and traffic. and buses being rerouted and everything like that. but it's part of city living. >> reporter: the $600 million market east project sitting on the old philadelphia family court property, is just one new thing happening. these four acres between market and chestnut and 11th and 12th will soon house merchants like mom's organic market and nine show rooms in the design center. >> down to old city, market city, great revitalization. >> reporter: 300 apartments in a second building. we asked licenses and inspections about new places to live in the city. the agency told us more than 4,600 units opened last year. we also did some digging and found more than 21,000 building permits were issued last year,

compared to 19,000 the year before. >> it's nice to see that there's growth in the city. but keep in mind the city's already grown enough so there's already a lot of congestion as it is. >> reporter: we asked licenses and inspections how many new apartment buildings or condo buildings were built last year. they told us, close to 1,300 buildings opened their doors. live in center city, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. a family's irreplaceable american flag is flying again at the jersey shore tonight. after it was stolen over the fourth of july weekend. the flag wasç raised this afternoon in north wildwood. nbc 10 first told you last night at 6:00 that the flag was returned after media coverage of the theft. tom corcoran's family received the military-issued flag after his brother was killed in the vietnam war. for a decade it's flown once a

year on their neighbor's flagpole. a young woman showed up at his house monday with a box containing that flag. >> she just walked up and put this on the rocker. and said, this is yours. i sincerely thank you for making a right out of a wrong. mistakes are made in life. it is what you do after you make that mistake that counts. >> it sure is. police dropped their investigation into the theft at the family's request. striking casino workers in atlantic city took their protests all the way to trump tower in new york today. dozens of workers from the trump taj mahal demonstrated outside donald trump's office after protesting at carl icahn's doorstep. they said they profited from the taj mahal even after it went through multiple bankruptcies. workers at harrah's, bally's

and caesars have approved a new contract. workers at tropicana will vote on their new contract tomorrow. want to be a philadelphia firefighter? the department kicked off a new recruitment drive today in northeast philadelphia. fire commissioner adam teal and a group of firefighters put on a demonstration for potential recruits. the open enrollment application period begins on monday. you can apply online. the deadline is september 2nd. convicted felons in delaware have one lest hurdle to jump before having their voting rights restored. governor jack mar quell signed legislation that restores a felon's voting rights before they pay all of their fines, fees and restitution. delaware is one of three states requiring felons to pay outstanding fines before they could vote. the fight against alzheimer's disease, we'll hear from a woman going to

the republican national convention in cleveland. the secret service and police say they will get everything ready for monday. lauren mayk reports. >> reporter: plenty of police and other security personnel will be on duty for the duration of the gop convention next week. >> we're prepared for anything and everything that will or won't happen. >> reporter: thousands of officers from cleveland and some 70 other law enforcement agencies across the country are headed there to help with security. >> in many respects, with the number of officers coming from across the country, it is america's convention. >> reporter: they all admit the ambush on police in dallas has heightened concerns for cleveland. >> dallas was a wakeup call for a lot of people. >> reporter: they say they've changed some strategies in light of dallas but wouldn't elaborate. nor would they elaborate how they'll deal with ohio's open carry gun law, other than they say to abide by it.

>> not the first time people in cleveland will see open carry. we've had people with assault rifles and handguns and you name it. in groups of people. our officers are used to it. we've handled it before. >> reporter: law enforcement knows 50,000 people will be attending the convention itself. but have no idea how many protesters will show up or for what rope. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we still have showers around this evening. if you're heading out, take your umbrella. a lot ofç this is actually starting to wind down quite a bit. we have spotty light showers around the philadelphia area. new jersey and delaware, mostly drying out at this point. but as we go through the rest of the evening, we'll continue to see more improvements. closer look at the philadelphia area, though, just spotty light rain around the major interstates, even up towards

parts of bensalem, morristown seeing that rain, right near 2 on 95 there. this is mostly on the lighter side. if you're heading up towards trenton, we have ooh drier spot. we can still see the showers heading that way. through the lehigh valley we have moderate rainfall just now to the north of allentown and through the poconos. that's where we see some heavier rain through parts of carbon county. this is also where we have the threat of localized flooding. flood advisory for these sections until about 9:30. about two inches of rain expected here. so we could see localized street and creek flooding. future weather by #:30, clearing a lot of this out and overnight we'll keep the clouds around, too. wouldn't be surprised if we saw patchy fog. by early tomorrow morning, that's when we'll be really heating up quickly. humidity, you're going to feel that. it will be going up as well. through the afternoon it will be hot and humid. we also have the chance of a couple of showers, possibly a thunderstorm. i don't think for everyone.

then we go through tomorrow evening. we're fairly dry. the heat is on tomorrow, excessive heat warning. a heat advisory for much of the area. we'll watch temperatures closely tomorrow. and that feels-like temperature, that's why we have the excessive heat warning. the humidity feeling like triple digits, from 100 to 104 degrees. on these days you don't want to spend several hours outside at a time. and you definitely want to stay hydrated. it will be too hot outside over the next few days. as we go into tomorrow, even friday, in the 90s. by saturday and sunday, right around 90 degrees. if we do hit the 90s three days in a row, that will officially be the third heat wave so far that we've seen. don't forget your neighborhood forecast, your seven-day is always at the bottom of your screen. and for tomorrow, in the mid to low 90s for most of the area. yardley 94. reading 93. can't rule out a shower or thunderstorm in the afternoon.
