tomorrow. the heat and humidity will make it feel around 100 degrees for your friday. excessive heat warnings and heat alerts are up. advisories for the entire area pretty much, as we go from today into tomorrow. temperatures feeling around 100 degrees. again, this is potentially dangerous heat. so we're talking about long-term being outside, you don't want to do that all day. make sure you stay hydrated. make sure you don't leave children and pets in the car. it's way too hot out for that. as far as any rain around, we were dealing with one cluster of storms earlier in lehigh valley. but the heat is back in. the storms have left. we'll keep our eye on any more popping up this afternoon. and what the heat means going into the weekend coming up. nbc 10 is here to help you through the dangerous heat and humidity. for safety tips and contact information for philadelphia's heat line, just tap the nbc 10 app. coming up at 4:45, we'll tell

you about the discounts some people are getting because of this high heat. the countdown is on to donald trump's decision 2016. he'll announce his vice presidential pick tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. in manhattan. that's just 19 hours from now. just in the past hour, nbc news has learned more information about who trump may or may not pick. nbc 10's keith jones live in the breaking news center with the developments. keith? >> nbc news just spoke with donald trump jr. he said no decision has been made. any reports that point to one candidate are premature. governor chris christie could still be trump's running mate. there are two other finalists, former house speaker newt gingrich and mike pence. earlier, there was news circulating that pence was the pick. but trump has not yet made a final decision. gingrich is expected to hear trump's pick this afternoon. meanwhile, this morning, nbc news spoke to chris christie.

the new jersey governor's part of trump's transition team. christie said getting the presumptive nominee elected makes priority over his vice presidential ambitions. >> the product is the most important thing. put aside your ego, put aside which office in the white house you would want. whether i'm vice president or head of the transition, that's what i'm focused on. >> we'll have more on what new jersey residents have to say about a possible christie vice presidential nomination, ahead at 5:00 and 6:00. we will continue to monitor this story from the breaking news center and bring you any new information as soon as we get it. keith jones, nbc 10 news. today supreme court justice ruth bader ginsberg is apologizing after her spat with donald trump. >> she issued a statement today calling comments she made about trump, quote, ill advised. ginsberg admits junls should not comment on candidates running for public office. she slammed trump three times in

the last week saying he's a faker who really has an ego, and has no consistency about him. again, the justice's words there. in response, trump has fired back saying her mind is shot. he's also called on her to resign. today hillary clinton went after donald trump saying he is running the most divisive campaign of our lifetime. the presumptive democratic nominee spoke to latino activists at the conference of the reeg league of the latin american citizens in washington. she said if elected, she will introduce a comprehensive immigration reform bill within her first 100 days in office. we are now less than one week away from the republican national convention. >> less than two weeks away from the democratic national convention. and today national security officials spoke about their concerns over possible violence during both events. homeland security secretary jeh johnson testified before congress today about his concerns demonstrators could get out of hand at the rnc in cleveland next week.

he'll be visiting the convention hall to make an inspection there, and make a similar to philadelphia next week. cleveland police showed off the tools they'll be able to use to keep order at the rnc. the city was given $50,000 for security to use for bomb suits. the department has bomb-sniffing dogs, mounted police, truckloads of fencing will go up between now and saturday night when a security sweep will then take place. the convention begins on monday. i'm heading to cleveland this weekend along with a team of nbc 10 reporters and photo journalists to get you inside access to the rnc. we'll bring you every angle of the convention action. our live coverage begins this sunday night at 11:00 right here on nbc 10. we are getting our first look at the damage causing the septa slowdown. today engineers with the transit agency gave me an up-close look at the cracks that forced them to pull a third of their regional rail cars from service.

>> you've got the wheel axis going through. >> reporter: a flashlight and pointer, septa engineers tried to show off the one-inch problem in some spots that's causing major trouble for the transit agency. septa has pulled 120 silverliner cars off the tracks, leaving thousands of regional rail riders with limited service, and fewer seats. >> all the dirt and paint off of it. to confirm. >> reporter: crews are using a red dye to penetrate and highlight the cracks. samples from the broken parts have been sent to the lab to try to figure out why this is happening, and how to fix it, both in the short and long term. >> we put dye penetrant on this. >> reporter: ron hopkins tells me this demonstration is all about transparency for the

public. with no solution yet, the waiting game for everyone continues. >> with the inspections, we need to build the confidence of the public that when we do return the cars to service, that they're safe. as much as we would like to say what the fix is immediately, there's a lot of things that go into it. >> we'll, of course, keep you posted on this. septa said it was an inspector who discovered the problem after first noticing a car leaning on the tracks in the maintenance yard of the 120 cars pulled, 115 of them have the cracks. >> good for that inspector. a delaware mom is in jail accused of leaving her toddler in a hot car. state police say nicole ames of lewis left her son out in the car on saturday. he may have been in the hot car with the windows shut for more than an hour. two people got him out. and they called 911. troopers believe the mom may have been under the influence of a prescription drug. this afternoon, a new castle county man is in custody in new york city waiting to be sent

back to delaware on murder charges. police arrested gregory parker yesterday, nearly seven months after investigators say he killed a man he knew. parker used to play basketball overseas, and he also coached children. now he's accused of beating sean spence to death inside the new castle county home where parker lived. police have not named a motive in this case. a jury's ruled in favor of nascar and pocono raceway in a case involving a deadly lightning strike in 2012. they report that the racetrack was negligent but did not cause harm to the victim. brian zimmerman was killed in the parking lot outside the grandstands five minutes after a race was stopped in august of that year. you will soon be able to text 911 if you're ever in trouble in camden county. new technology will make the camden county communications center one of the first in new jersey to accept 911 texts. if you can send a text and your

phone isn't a best option because it's too dangerous to call or you don't have reception, that's why you should use this. that's what the officials say. it's also useful for people who are hearing impaired. pennsylvania officially has a new budget after governor tom wolf signed the $1.3 billion revenue package last night. the budget which had moved quickly through the general assembly includes a $1 hike per pack in the cigarette tax. it also extends the state sales tax to digital downloads. the budget helps the state avoid a second straight partisan stalemate. penndot is helping visitors navigate the city when the democratic national convention comes to town. it offers options about realtime traffic conditions on highways in the philadelphia region. it also lists street closures around the convention venue at the wells fargo center. the site is accessible from both desktop and mobile devices. you can find more by visiting our website or tapping on the

nbc 10 app. while delegates are here in the philadelphia area for the democratic national convention, many will be staying outside of the city. >> that's big for small business in the region, of course. deanna durante found people cashing in. deanna? >> reporter: it's not just the delegates riding around in style. but when they are here, they're going to need to eat, they're going to need transportation, and everybody here for the democratic national convention will be getting the patriotic treatment. you could call her a modern day betsy ross. >> we have a fabulous flag. it's a sim billion of our freedom and our liberty. i'm proud to say, and honored that i'm able to sell the american flag for a living. >> reporter: there's no needle and thread for marilyn, the president of "about flags." how many flags does she sell a year? >> i can't even begin to tell

you that. >> reporter: but this year her sales have jumped because of the democratic national convention. she's selling flags to hotels where delegates are staying and hoping the convention center beefs up its patriotic presence with flags and decorations. >> we have some of the major newspapers and media groups that are right in the wells fargo. a lot of drivers have already been vetted through the secret service. >> reporter: all hands on deck, or on the wheel, in king of prussia. folks working the dnc need to get from point a to point b. the bulk of the work will be in vans, cars and buses owned by king limousine. >> we have 250 vehicles in the fleet. pretty much the majority of those will be used. there will be thousands, obviously. we'll run shuttles early in the morning until midnight. >> reporter: now, delegates will be greeted with flags like these as well as much bigger ones when they check into their hotels. king limousine said they will have everybody working from dispatchers to maintenance

people to keep these buses and limos on the road throughout the entire convention. reporting live in king of prussia, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. a major company has plans to set up shop on the city's waterfront. american water works company plans to build the new corporate headquarters on the waterfront. it's planned for this fall. construction is expected to be complete in the second half of 2018. american water works is the latest company to move to camden thanks to generous state tax subsidies. atlantic city is delaying the deadline for bids on the site of the former bader field airport. they were supposed to be due today. the city council decided yesterday to postpone the auction deadline auction until august 4th. they hope selling the property will lower the city's debt so they can avoid a financial takeover by the state. all new jersey school

districts will test their drinking water. the state board of education passed new regulations on wednesday. districts that have not tested for lead recently must do so within a year. and all districts must now test their water at least once every six years. governor chris christie ordered these regulations after elevated lead levels were found in water in several districts. today the pennsylvania health department's launching a new initiative to protect pregnant women from the zika virus. the department is handing out 2,500 zika prevention kits around the state. they contain insect repellant for skin and clothing, and has tablets to put in standing water outside to make sure it does not attract mosquitoes. >> the zika virus to those who are healthy is a very mild disease in most cases. but what we're really concerned about is pregnant women. >> other preventive measures that pregnant women can take includes staying in air conditioned rooms, wearing light-colored loose-fitting

clothing that covers all exposed skin. property owners in new castle county won't be getting mosquito fines. they squashed the proposed legislation. it would have allowed $50 fines for owners that had stagnant pools of water on their land. the plan was dropped after concern from guarders in. let's look at the schuylkill expressway as the evening rush gets started. a new report finds 8 in every 10 of these drivers would admit that they've acted on anger behind the wheel. that aggression is apparently worse in our area. tim furlong has more on what's happening out on our roads. >> reporter: we're apparently a nation of angry drivers. middle fingers flying. do you have road rage? >> yes. >> reporter: there are crazy violent examples of road rage

all over the news and a aaa study shows road rage is on the rise. >> cut you off, give you the look. >> reporter: aaa says 8 out of 10 drivers they surveyed said they've had road rage in the last year. men are more likely to act out than women. aaa says 56% of all fatal accidents involve some form of aggression. honestly, it's easy to blame the people that make us angry on the road. here's the thing. i can't let their behavior make me lose my cool. >> usually i'll get a little aggressive with the horn. i don't like to give the middle finger. i'll, like, yell to myself in the car with the windows up. >> i give them the little no no no kind of sign. >> reporter: but whatever happens out here, the experts say don't be like the 8 million americans who admitted they've

gotten out of their car to confront another driver. >> that's a very dangerous idea. you don't know how the other driver is going to react. you don't know if they have a weapon in their car. you can take a bad situation and make it a whole lot worse. >> reporter: tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >>. parts of southeastern pennsylvania, this will make you tense, drying out today after heavy rains brought flooding last night. check out this video. these cows forced to swim to higher ground. their pasture flooded in lancaster. emergency crews had to rescue some people from their flooded homes as well. this driver trucked right through flooded roads. that's a dangerous thing to do. some areas reported up to three feet of floodwaters. now we're worried about the heat.  >> yeah, we've had plenty of sunshine today. really hazy out there. sheena, what are you seeing? >> hazy and humid. it's because of the humidity around, we have the low clouds this morning, really heating up across the area now, which is why we have the first alert out

for dangerous heat. feeling around 100 degrees both today and tomorrow. if you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen there, you'll be able to see how much longer all this heat is going to last. but we do have the first alert out still for today and tomorrow. here's the feels-like temperature right now. in philadelphia, feels like 99 degrees. just about 30 minutes ago we were feeling like 100. either way, still feels very hot. trenton feeling like 100 degrees. if you're in dover, you feel like 105 right now. wilmington feeling like 100. now, the actual temperatures are in the 90s. but the humidity makes it feel so much more uncomfortable. that will continue for your friday. into the weekend, the humidity will drop off. it's going to be a little less humid, but still hot. still around 90 degrees both saturday and sunday. next week, we're not exactly going to get a break from the heat. we're still going to be in the 90s next week. at least for most of the week. we have a chance for thunderstorms. the best day looks like tuesday

right now. that gives us a break from the heat. otherwise the heat is going to continue. actual temperatures right now are in the 90s, like i mentioned. 93 philadelphia. delaware 93 degrees. our pennsylvania suburbs, conco concordville 91 degrees. 88 from westchester. that might be a little too hot. but either way it definitely feels like 98. melbourne coming in at 93 degrees. if you're in montgomery county, 93 north wales, 90 in warrington and bucks county. feeling quite a bit hotter with all the humidity. excessive heat warning will hang around today and tomorrow. the heat advisory for the surrounding areas. basically everybody is in some kind of a heat warning or advisory for both today and tomorrow. temperatures will be remaining in the mid-90s tomorrow afternoon. feeling around 100 degrees. so again, this is potentially dangerous heat. you don't want to be outside for

several hours at a time. you want to stay hydrated. try to find some shade if you have to be outside. i know you felt it today. it's very hot and uncomfortable. especially if you're outside for a long period. try to avoid that tomorrow. here's a look at the radar. we had showers and storms move through the lehigh valley earlier. i think we're going to stay dry for the rest of this evening. wouldn't be surprised if we had a pop-up shower, but the trend right now is fairly dry. i don't see any indications of any more showers trying to pop up. here's what it looks like today. we've gotten to 93 so far in philadelphia. we have felt as hot as 101. that was earlier this afternoon right around 3:00 p.m. or so. tomorrow, 94, feeling around 100. i mentioned the lower humidity saturday. around 90 degrees. but it will only feel a couple of degrees hotter, not so much in the triple digits this weekend. not any rain tonight. we're in the clear. tomorrow we're in the clear as well. just hot and humid again. then we go through tomorrow

right around noon. we could see a couple of showers trying to form. i think we'll be mostly dry, though. later on tomorrow night we could have some showers just south, but most of the area tomorrow will be dry and sunny and hot and humid. here's your neighborhood temperatures. 94 fairmont. allentown, expect 92 degrees. avalon coming in around 90 degrees, close to the shore. dover, 93 degrees. and the weekend stays hot. so from friday to saturday to sunday, temperatures will be in the 90s. a little bit less humid as we go into part of your weekend. there's a chance we could see an afternoon thunderstorm. not everywhere on saturday, but a pop-up one not out of the question, just because of all the heat that will be around. we'll watch that closely. it does look as though we're at the beginning of a heat wave. we'll talk more about your forecast coming up. >> okay, sheena. a child's bedtime could impact their waistline. >> a new study shows children should be under the covers to help manage their weight later in life. and this.

check out this video. a woman leading police on a crazy chase in compton, california, last night. she backed into officers, then drove over police spike strips. you see the sparks flying as she rides on her rims. she couldn't keep this up forever, though. dozens of dope tis eventually surrounded her right there. and it's over. she was taken into custody. a toddler in ohio is boxing for attention around the world right now because he trains just like rocky. >> 2-year-old charlie mimics the iconic training scene in rocky 2 so well, that even sa loan himself is challenging the little guy to a fight. he's doing it in diapers. charlie has the whole routine down perfectly. even the one-armed push ups.

a pretend version of chopping wood and lifting weights all in sync with rocky. his dad posted this video online and it's got millions of views. stallone wrote, this kid makes me so proud it touches a heart so young. maybe i have to fight him in rocky 10. you know there's going to be a rocky 10, right? >> that's real video, right? that's not cgi? that's a real child? in diapers. that's amazing. it has been a day of dangerous heat and humidity throughout our area. oppressive conditions of people seeking relief any way they can. having a whole lot of fun here at the water park in the pocono mountains. it's worse in center city. broad street from the kimmel center campus camera, it feels like we're in the triple digits today. i hate to be the one to break it to you, but the heat's going to be with us for a while. >> it's going to be here for a while. sheena parveen is tracking the heat for us. >> feels like triple digits outside. the heat is potentially dangerous because of the high humidity along with it. the first alert for pennsylvania, new jersey and

delaware. if you look at that seven-day at the bottom of your screen, you'll be able to see how long that's going to last. it's not just going to be the rest of this week, it will go into next week, too, along with the 90-degree temperatures. from 12:00 p.m. today to 8:00 p.m. today, extreme heat and humidity, feeling like triple digits. temperatures right now 93 actual temperature in philadelphia. not including humidity. 93 wilmington and dover. 91 mount holly. 92 in vineland. if we look at what it feels like now with the humidity, we have some triple digit numbers here. 100 degrees in trenton, philadelphia felt as hot as 101 today. right now we feel like 99 degrees in philadelphia. 99 in vineland. 97 degrees in allentown. so quite a bit of a difference. that's going to be the case tomorrow, too. that excessive heat warning and heat advisory is out for the entire area today and tomorrow.

feeling like triple digits. temperatures will be staying in the 90s. if we hit 90 degrees again as we go into saturday, that would be a heat wave. you have a hot weekend in the forecast. the humidity will be just a tad lower. we're look at that with your weekend forecast coming up. now to "nbc 10 responds." the unit that helps you with your consumer complaints. >> a philadelphia woman said she can't understand why the gas company hasn't given her the refund she's owed. harry, what's the problem here? >> this woman was really, really upset when she reached out to us. we looked into it. and when we found out what had been going on, we saw that the gas company had admitted they owed her money for months, but still no refund. cindy moved into her new apartment. she has an electric range and no need for philadelphia gas works. but there's one hang-up. >> i just want my refund check, that's all. >> reporter: back in february,

she moved out of this apartment where she was a pgw customer. in march, the gas company sent her this notice. it shows she had overpaid on her account and is owed $127.73. ryan tells us every time she calls, pgw gave her excuse after excuse after excuse. >> i called -- well, probably about ten times to 12 times all together. >> reporter: then she contacted "nbc 10 responds." >> you called me 15 minutes later. >> reporter: after talking to ryan, we contacted pgw. they promised us she would have a check in a few days. but three more weeks went by. so we went to pgw offices for answers. >> it appears there was an error in the address. >> reporter: the spokesperson barry o'sullivan said the refund process takes four to eight weeks. ryan's check was issued with an incorrect address twice. >> unfortunately that reset the process.

>> reporter: after we met with pgw, ryan got her check the next day, more than four months after it was first promised to her. >> i know if i had owed them this money, my services would have been cut off. i got my money back. >> now, pgw tells us it has changed its policy. and their process for refunds. from four to eight weeks to a week and a half. ryan plans to spoil her grandchildren with some of that money. you know, $127 doesn't sound like a whole lot, but for a lot of people, that's a ton of money to me. >> on your pgw bill, sure. >> i'm sure the grandkids would love having some of that. >> her refund puts that total amount recovered for you at $52,838. happy grandkids, waiting for a nice toy or something.

two new obesity studies today are focusing on life expectancy and bedtimes.

first, new research shows that overweight people can lose a year of life on average. researchers conducted the largest ever analysis on this study in almost 4 million nonsmokers. they found that moderately overweight people can lose up to three years of life. they also found being obese is much more dangerous for men than it is for women. putting your kids to bed earlier at night could cut their risk of being obese as a teenager. researchers at ohio state university found preschoolers who went to bed at 8:00 in the evening or earlier were half as likely to be obese ten years later. that's compared to kids with bedtimes after 9:00. children with the latest bedtimes had the highest risk of obesity. >> maybe you've been staying up late plak pokemon go. the app is sending players on hunts for virtual characters in the real world. while the crazy popular app may be draining your phone's battery, it's not likely killing your data plan. verizon said the app makes up less than 1% of their traffic.

brand-new way to try to keep cool in this smothering heat. today six flags great adventure opened a new water playground inside hurricane harbor. it offers 55 interactive features like water guns, slides, giant tipping bucket. the tower is nearly two stories high. the water definitely the place to be today. >> yeah, at least one city in our area is reducing the admission fee to get into the pool in this dangerous heat. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is live in the lehigh valley this afternoon with more on how families are cooling off at a discounted rate. >> reporter: it was actually pretty cloudy this morning. the sun came out and there's oppressive heat right now. the pool is not that packed here in allentown. a lot of kids said their friends are playing pokemon go and skipping the pool today.

the heat out there. thanks, randy. let's check in with meteorologist sheena parveen. she's tracking this steamy weather. sheena? >> yeah, it is steamy out there. the girl in the pool that randy was talking to made a really good observation. she said the wind is warm. it's very warm. it's actually our warmest wind direction today. it's giving us all the humidity and heat around which is potentially dangerous heat. center city, clouds around. it was hazy this morning. but also very humid. and it warmed up very quickly with that wind direction, too. don't forget your seven-day is at the bottom of the screen. you'll be able to see the heat that will last all the way into next week. look at the feels-like temperatures right now. when you factor in the humidity, this is what it feels like when you walk outside. 99 degrees in philadelphia. felt like 101 a couple of hours ago in philadelphia. trenton feeling like 100, as well as wilmington. dover feels like 105 degrees right now. allentown feeling like 97 degrees. even mount holly.

we're looking at the actual temperatures now. these are the actual air temperatures without the humidity. 93 philadelphia. also delaware. low 90s through the lehigh valley and pennsylvania suburbs. we'll look at the new jersey neighborhoods. medford 95. lumberton 92 degrees. hamilton township 93. florence coming in at 92. but feeling closer to 100 with the humidity. that's why we have the excessive heat warning out, and the heat advisory. this is for everyone. so everyone is under some type of heat advisory or warning for both today and friday. temperatures will stay in the mid-90s through the afternoon, feeling like triple dij its with all that humidity around. and we're talking about the potential heat wave. today we already hit 93. tomorrow we expect about 94. saturday, if we hit 90, that would be a heat wave. we're going to have lower humidity over the weekend, so it's not going to feel as unbearable. it's still going to be hot. even as we go into next week,

we're going to start in the 90s again. we don't have much of a break from the heat anytime soon until next tuesday. that's because we're going to get more rain moving in. radar is dry. thunderstorms moved through the lehigh valley, off to new york now. i think we'll mostly stay dry as we go through the evening, too. not much more happening tonight. a very warm and very humid evening tonight. that's the way it will be when you wake up in the morning. tomorrow afternoon, a chance we could see a few spotty showers try to develop. not too much, though, another hot and humid day as we go through your friday afternoon. take a look at the forecast. high temperatures mid-90s, feeling close to triple-digit heat. closer than what some of the red numbers are shown here. that would be the heat index for tomorrow. most of the area will be staying dry with temperatures about the mid-90s. your shore forecast into the weekend, it's going to be hot, too. we'll be right around the mid-80s. a little less humid over the weekend. heat index is going to be high. sunburn in about 10 to 15

100 degrees in philadelphia. 101 in wilmington. dover feeling like 104. if you're in vineland, you feel like 98 degrees. trenton feels like 99 degrees. it is a hot one outside, all because of the humidity and the southwest wind. we have a first alert out for today and tomorrow because of this. pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware, from now until 8:00 p.m. tomorrow night. so the heat and humidity will continue to make temperatures feel around 100 degrees as we go into your friday afternoon. so excessive heat warnings, heat advisories are up for everybody today and tomorrow because of that potentially dangerous heat. you don't want to spend several hours outside at a time. you want to stay hydrated. if you have to be outside, stay in the shade and never leave children and animals in the car without the a/c on, of course, because that's the time of the year, right now, when it gets very dangerous. storms have moved away. we don't expect any more through the rest of the
