100 degrees in philadelphia. 101 in wilmington. dover feeling like 104. if you're in vineland, you feel like 98 degrees. trenton feels like 99 degrees. it is a hot one outside, all because of the humidity and the southwest wind. we have a first alert out for today and tomorrow because of this. pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware, from now until 8:00 p.m. tomorrow night. so the heat and humidity will continue to make temperatures feel around 100 degrees as we go into your friday afternoon. so excessive heat warnings, heat advisories are up for everybody today and tomorrow because of that potentially dangerous heat. you don't want to spend several hours outside at a time. you want to stay hydrated. if you have to be outside, stay in the shade and never leave children and animals in the car without the a/c on, of course, because that's the time of the year, right now, when it gets very dangerous. storms have moved away. we don't expect any more through the rest of the evening.

the heat will stay in the forecast for tonight. coming up, we'll take a look at the forecast and what it means for your weekend. also tonight, the donald trump vice presidential announcement gets hijacked. he said he would introduce his pick tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. but the rumors and speculations went wild. >> it started about 12:30 today, that's when the first report came out that governor mike pence was going to be trump's pick. >> but by 2:30, nbc's kelly o'donnell reported no decision had been made. and there's a divide among the trump family over who should be chosen. >> less than an hour later, we heard from one of the family members, donald trump jr. live on msnbc. he said his father had not made a choice. but would decide this afternoon. >> bottom line, we're still waiting for tomorrow's official announcement, which will happen in just about 18 hours from now. one thing everybody seems to agree upon, one of these three men will be trump's vice

president. chris christie, newt gingrich or mike pence. >> before all of today's peck la speculation, we heard from chris christie. more from the new jersey governor. aundrea? >> donald trump was expected to make his decision today, and announce it to the public tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with all the uncertainty around the campaign, chris christie spoke about the decision-making process just before noon. >> the next president of the united states, donald j. trump. >> new jersey residents are weighing in on the possibility of donald trump choosing chris christie as his vice presidential running mate. >> if he choose chris christie as vice president, i think that would be the worst mistake in the whole wild world. >> i think he's a good man and i know he'll do a good job. >> reporter: nbc news sat down with the governor today. he still had not received a call from trump about his decision. >> i'm not going to say it will bother me if i'm not selected. of course it bothers you a little bit.

if you're a competitive person like i am and you're used to winning like i am, again, you don't like coming in second. >> reporter: christie is a controversial figure in the garden state. in may, a poll found christie's disapproval ratings were at 64% among new jersey voters. with a 4-1 margin, voters also said he should not be trump's vice presidential nominee. >> back when we had sandy, i thought he was doing a great job. but ever since he tried to run for president i think he's left us a little in the dust. >> reporter: christie is ready to take his service to the national level while he waits for the call from trump. christie said he remains calm and stays focused on the big picture. >> what matters most to me is helping him get elected president and then if he is, to make sure that he's the successful president for our country and the world. >> governor christie already serves as a chairman of trump's trans iks team. in fast, christie was chosen to host a conference call about

those efforts. we're checking to see if that's still happening. christie shares what's next if he's not chosen. reporting live from the breaking news center, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. the list of who will speak at the republican national convention beginning to take shape. the lineup features trump's family, friends, celebrities, which include his wife melania, daughter ivanka, and sons. speaker of the house paul ryan, former eagles quarterback tim tebow and senator ted cruz, and dr. ben carson are included on that partial list. nbc 10 will be bringing you full coverage from the rnc. tracy davidson, lauren mayk and jim rosenfield are all headed to cleveland. look for their report sunday night at 11:00. obviously, a top priority keeping the convention safe. some of the high-tech equipment the cleveland police will be using next week. and we'll switch gears and look at the democratic national convention right here at home in

south philadelphia. how businesses in the suburbs will be making big bucks, when the dnc rolls into town. dear we're getting a closer look at the cracks discovered on dozens of septa's regional rail cars. but the transit agency still doesn't know what caused them. septa engineers used a flashlight and pointer to show off the cracks to the suspension system. a third of septa's entire fleet is off the tracks until the problem can be fixed. meantime, thousands of riders are left with limited service and fewer seats. while the priority is to get the cars back online quickly, septa said safety cannot compromised. >> we're obviously not going to put a cracked beam back into service. we need to understand all the stresses. >> septa said it was an inspector who discovered the problem after first noticing a car leaning on the tracks in the maintenance yard. if you could change the vine street expressway, what would you do? that's what philadelphia mayor jim kenny is talking about right

now. he's in a public design session. the focus is for economic investment and green space for businesses for residents along vine street from 7th to broad street. time is ticking for some new jersey schools that have yet to test their drinking water for lead. under new state guidelines, school districts have one year to get the job done if they want to be reimbursed for those tests. the new rules were put in place after elevated lead levels were found in water at several schools in the state. the regulations also called for districts to test their water every six years. help is on the way to clean up the water supply in montgomery county. thanks to a $10 million grant fund included in the state budget, the money will go to necessary infrastructure, such as carbon filters, to remove carcinogenic chemicals from contaminated well water. chemicals used in fire fighting foam at a former military base near horsham may have leached

into the water supply causing contamination. if you're in trouble, you can call 911 of course. what if you lived in camden county now. you can actually text help as well. the communication center is one of the first 911 call centers in the state to have that technology. residents who can't make a call in an emergency situation or don't have reception, they can send a text and receive responses there emergency operators. new video tonight of the vandalism of a dinosaur. on display at the reading public museum. you can see three young men walk up to it, starting to climb up on it. at one point jumping on to its head. a closer look now at the damage left behind. the dinosaur's fingers, teeth, and parts of its tail are broken and missing. the community's talking about taking up a collection to repair it. the fight to cure hiv got a big boost, and philadelphia will play a major part. the big hiv delaney project is based in philadelphia.

today the project received a $23 million grant from the national institutes of health. researchers from the wisstar institute will join top doctors from around the country. they'll be working on more of that research. the researchers are working with a pharmaceutical company based in blue bell. tests are already under way. and show positive results. the pennsylvania health department is debuting a new phase in its fight against zika. today the department started handing out about 2,500 zika prevention kits for pregnant women. they contain insect repellant for skin and for clothes. >> what a lot of the educational efforts have been about is educating the public about things they can do, simple things they can do to prevent exposure to mosquitoes. >> those steps include staying indoors when mosquitoes are most

road rage. let's face it, we've all been guilty at some point, right. >> we shared stories just a moment ago. i should admit, you may think it's harmless or humorous. but it is not. new research found it is getting worse and it's leading to more serious consequences. >> nbc 10 delaware bureau reporter tim furlong shows us

exactly why. >> reporter: we all have our driving habits. >> i'm probably more like a dipper. dip in and out of traffic. >> reporter: we all have our pet peeves with other drivers. >> people on their phones, that drives me nuts. >> reporter: some of us have been on one end of road rage or the other. >> i've seen people run up on people, call them names, spit on them. >> reporter: around the country we've seen extreme violent xanl pls of road rage. a new aaa survey will stop you right in your tracks. it shows you road rage is getting worse. more horns, more middle fingers, and in some cases even more violence. aaa said 8 out of 10 drivers said they had road rage. drivers in the northeastern u.s., that's us, are more aggressive than drivers in other parts of the country. >> it makes me nuts when i see people texting and weaving in and out of the lanes. is it worth chasing them down or riding their bumper?

it makes no sense. you just need to let it go. >> my wife just said smile at them and have a blessed day. >> reporter: experts say don't go home, call 911 or try to stop at a police or fire station where there will be people to help you. we don't know what's going on in their life that made them so ready to snap. aaa said you certainly don't want to escalate the situation. >> what we were most shocked about, 8 million people who jumped out and confronted other drivers, that's a dangerous idea. >> reporter: no matter where you're headed, keep your cool on the roads and stay away from those who clearly aren't keeping theirs. tim furlong, nbc 10 news. good advice for all things in life, to just let it go. >> just quote "frozen." are you guilty of the top road rage behavior? according to the survey, half of all drivers admitted to tailgating another car. about 1 in 4 said they tried to block another car from changing lanes. >> nearly half admitted to yelling, or honking their horn.

and a third have given angry gestures. you can figure out exactly what that means. you might have a few angry gestures for this weather. >> it's been feeling like 100 degrees in a lot of spots today. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is tracking this extreme heat in your neighborhood. >> it is extreme. potentially dangerous, too, which is why we have a first alert out for the heat, feeling around 100 degrees. not just today, but this is going to continue for tomorrow. if you look at that seven-day right at the bottom of your screen, you can see the heat not just lasting today and tomorrow, it's actually going to be through the weekend and even into next week. now, as far as that feels-like temperature, we feel like triple digits. feels like 104 in dover. vineland feels like 98 degrees. trenton, you feel like # 9 degrees with the humidity. so the humidity is making it feel so much more uncomfortable. this weekend, though, the humidity is going to drop a bit.

that's a bonus. it's still going to be hot, though. temperatures still around 90 degrees. just a little more comfortable and not feeling like 100 this weekend. next week, however, the humidity's going to go up again. we have another round of showers and storms. so at least one day the rain will help to cool us down. but that's going to be one of the rainier days. actual temperatures in the 90s. 94 through philadelphia. mid-90s in delaware. low 90s through much of south jersey and pennsylvania suburbs. you see how much of a difference the humidity makes, about a ten-degree difference for at least most of the area. philadelphia neighborhood temperatures, again, 90s. 94 philly international. 94 parkside. 95 society hill. bustleton 94. as well as winchester park. it is going to stay very warm and humid tonight and overnight. and even as you wake up tomorrow morning. a lot like this morning. so the excessive heat warning and heat advisory, that continues for tomorrow as well as today. temperatures mid-90s, feeling

like triple digits. that's why we're staying this is potentially dangerous heat. we're dry right now on radar. i really don't think we're going to see any more rain relief as we go through tonight. the only thunderstorms we have were earlier this afternoon through the lehigh valley. those have quickly moved away. tomorrow, i really don't think we're going to see much in the way of rain relief either. we've gotten to the mid-90s in philadelphia. felt around 104. tomorrow feels around 100. i mentioned the humidity will be lower saturday. that's going to make a bit of a difference there. high of 90 for saturday. maybe feeling a couple degrees warmer, but not feeling like the triple digits like we are today. as we go through time, overnight and into tomorrow, we'll be staying mostly dry. tomorrow afternoon, there's a chance we could see some showers try to pop up. i don't think it's going to be very widespread. then tomorrow evening, we're still going to be very warm and very humid going into your weekend. your weekend forecast going to stay hot.

saturday there's a chance we could have a pop-up afternoon shower or thunderstorm. but it's going to be a mostly dry day with the heat still here, right around 90 degrees for most of the area saturday. some spots in the mid to upper 80s with less humidity. into your sunday, temperatures still around 90. monday, we start next week with a little bit more humidity. with temperatures in about the mid to low 90s. your beach forecast, shore forecast as well this weekend, saturday 86 degrees. mostly sunny. sunday, a little more in the way of cloud cover, 85 degrees. wildwood for saturday, expect temperatures mid-80s. on sunday we'll still see the mid-80s. if you're heading to cape may, expect your weekend to be in the mid-80s, mostly dry there, too. don't forget the sun block. sunburn in 10 to 15 minutes. the sun is intense along with the heat as well. the weekend forecast coming up. happening right now, workers have gathered in minnesota. >> jim rosenfield is in the

breaking news center tracking the story for us. >> a vigil for cast ile killed in minnesota. lunch room workers gathered at ben franklin high school on broad street. we look at sky force 10. the group are gathered around a speaker there at the school. the connection here, castile was a popular cafeteria worker, ki8d by the police officer at a traffic stop. the whole thing was recorded by his girlfriend on facebook live. that shooting, along with the death of a man in baton rouge led to all those protests that we've been seeing for some time now around the country. so once again, a vigil to remember him right here in our own backyard outside ben franklin high school on broad street. we're keeping an eye on that vigil for you. jim rosenfield, nbc 10 news. >> thanks for that, jim. well, they promised to track your steps, your heart rate and how many calories you burn. we're talking about the popular fitness trackers.

for the first time consumers will be able to find out if their food contains genetically modified ingredients, or gmos. congress sent legislation to president barack obama today requiring most food packages to include a label, symbol or electronic code with the information. it calls for the usda to decide which ingredients will classify as genetically modified. gmos stands for genetically modified organisms, and it means that the food has been engineered to have new traits by slicing in other genetic material. for example, making them more resistant to bugs, the process, worrisome people, some consumers who fear it could be harmful. somehow harmful to them, or the environment. but the fda regulates ---at least 90% of all soybean and

here's one way to beat the heat. how about a canoe ride down the christina river. for those people who didn't want to get in the water, a late stroll nearby did the trick. we say hazy and humid. this is it. take a look at the thick air hanging over atlantic county earlier today. we're not kidding, folks, that air is thick, hot. settling in over the region. >> it's led to an excessive heat warning. sheena parveen joins us now with the details. >> hey, guys. this is why. temperatures feeling like triple

digits right now across the area. and this is going to be the case again tomorrow. so this is why we have these excessive heat warnings out for today and tomorrow. expect this to continue for your friday. so if you think this is too hot to be outside today, tomorrow, try to avoid several hours at a time outside. stay hydrated and stay in the shade. feels like 100 degrees in philadelphia. feels like 104 in dover. allentown feels like 95. trenton feels like 99 degrees. now, here is the actual temperature outside. 94 is the actual temperature in philadelphia. 93 in dover. the first alert because of what i just showed you, for pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware, from now until 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. so the temperatures are going to continue in the 90s, tomorrow, plus high humidity, making it feel like triple-digit heat. that's potentially dangerous across the area. if you look at the seven-day at the bottom of the screen, that

shows you how much longer the heat's going to last. the humidity will be a little bit lower this weekend. so it's not going to feel like it does today. excessive heat warning, heat advisories out because of the triple-digit heat. so we have to keep reminding everyone to stay hydrated. again, this is potentially dangerous if you're outside especially for several hours at a time. we're dry on radar. the storms that moved through earlier are now moving through new york. so we don't have to worry about any rain relief. we're not going to see that tonight. really, tomorrow, too. if you combine today and tomorrow and saturday's temperature together, that would technically be a heat wave. the heat's actually going to be continuing as we go into next week. the 90s are going to stay in the frasmt. coming up, we'll look at what your weekend looks like across each neighborhood. not everyone is going to be at 90 degrees this weekend. we'll see who can expect a shower and more heat next week, that's coming up. a mom from delaware is facing charges for leaving her toddler in a hot car with the windows up. delaware state police suspect

that nicole may have been under the influence of a prescription drug when she allegedly left her 2-year-old son outside of a dollar general store in lewis last friday. two people were able to get the little boy out of the car. they called 911. police believe he may have been in the car alone for more than an hour. citizen 2016, the countdown on for who will be donald trump's running mate. the list narrowed down to three. mike pence getting all the buzz today. this is ruth bader ginsberg apologizing for making political comments about trump. >> reporter: donald trump called indiana governor mike pence a good candidate. increasing speculation as for donald trump's vice presidential pick. >> my appeal is probably more national. i have some appeal in virtually every state. i think that mike pence would

have a huge midwestern appeal. >> i'm not going to say it will bother me if i'm not selected. >> reporter: trump is making his selection as supreme court justice ruth ginsberg apologized for talking about the presumptive republican nominee. she said her comments, quote, were ill advised and i regret making them. the presumptive democratic nominee blasted trump at a speech in virginia. >> you know that he says he's qualified to be commander in chief because he took miss universe to moscow. >> reporter: hillary clinton courted voters, including the hispanic vote with virginia senator tim caine. a potential vice presidential pick. >> on the economy, do you want a, you're fired president, or you're hired president. >> reporter: clinton wants to reverse the perception among voters that she's untrustworthy. a "new york times" cbs poll shows 67% of voters don't trust her. partly because of the e-mail

controversy. edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. there are concerns tonight about the potential for violence at the upcoming republican national convention. testifying in front of congress today, the secretary of homeland security said he's worried that demonstrations may get out of hand. police in cleveland have a number of resources they're using to inspect the area. >> it shines a national spotlight on a political event in the united states. there's a risk to groups who aspire to engage in acts of domestic terrorism. it will be a threat we're watching very, very carefully. >> reporter: there are similar concerns about the democratic national convention here in south philadelphia. the secretary of homeland security said he plans to visit the city next week. there is a major fear factor involved when voters consider who will become the next president of the united states. a new associated press poll finds that 81% of americans will feel afraid following the

election if clinton or trump. 25% said it doesn't matter who wins, they're scared of both candidates. nbc 10 will be bringing you full coverage of both party conventions starting with the rnc convention in cleveland. starting this sunday night at 11:00. to this now. a celebration of life held today in dallas for sergeant michael smith. smith was one of five dallas police officers gunned down last thursday during a protest. officers from across the country as well as canada attended that service. smith an army veteran served with the dallas police force for 28 years. the funeral for castile was held in minnesota. his casket was carried on a horse-drawn carriage to the histor historic cathedral of st. paul. castille was shot during a

traffic stop on july 6th. the department of justice has now launched a civil rights investigation into that shooting. just a short while ago, sky force 10 was over ben franklin high school where members of unite here lunch room workers held a rally in cast ile's honor. a man is being sent back to delaware after getting arrested for murder in new york city. gregory parker has been on the run since january when police say he killed a man inside his new castle home. he was arrested yesterday for the beating death of sean spence. police haven't released a motive. parker used to play basketball overseas and also coached kids. the auction deadline is extended for the baderfield airport. bids for the 143-acre site were supposed to be due today, but they decided yesterday to postpone the deadline until august 4th. city officials hope that selling the property will help them

the oppressive heat is reaching up to the lehigh valley, prompting one city to make changes at local pools. the city of allentown is offering discounts now at all of their public swimming pools during this week's heat wave. it will only cost children $2 to get in, adults $3. the city does warn that pools could be pretty crowded this week. as you can imagine. >> today's really hot.

through the weekend. right now at 94 in philadelphia. 93 in delaware. new jersey neighborhoods are coming in about the mid to low 90s. 93 piney hollow. 92 pemberton. 95 in lumberton. today will be the start of a heat wave here. 94 in florence. factor in the humidity, because that's the big story, that feels-like temperature is around triple digits for much of the area. 104 is what it feels like in dover right now. 100 in philadelphia. feels like 98 in vineland. 101 in wilmington. 99 degrees is what it feels like in trenton. so, yes, this is potentially dangerous heat. if you just imagine how hot it stays through the entire day with the feels-like temperature like this, just imagine how hot it is in a car with the windows rolled up. so remember, never leave children and animals in the car in this type of weather. it's going to continue as we go into tomorrow, too. make sure you stay hydrated. excessive heat warnings and heat advisories out for the entire area today and tomorrow. temperatures will stay in the

mid-90s tomorrow. feeling around 100 degrees. if you do have to stay outside for any period of time, if you work outside, stay in the shade, and drink plenty of water. temperatures will be staying hot, even though we'll be on the drier side tonight. tonight we'll be staying dry. humidity and warm temperatures will stay in the forecast for tomorrow. we're mostly dry. by 1:00 p.m., temperatures should already be in the low 90s for the area. we could see a couple of pops of showers in the afternoon. but not too much. still feeling around 100 degrees friday evening, still warm and still humid. if you're in fairmont, tomorrow, 94 degrees. yardley 94. reading 93 degrees tomorrow. 92 robbinsville. close to the shore, about the upper 80s. in dover, expect 93 degrees and mostly sunny. if you're heading to the shore this weekend, one place to cool off, the one thing about this weekend the humidity will drop off a little bit. it will not feel like triple-digit heat.

expect mid-80s this weekend, staying mostly dry. uv index is high, so it will be one of those days you can get a sunburn in 10 to 15 minutes. saturday around 90 degrees. chance of a shower saturday afternoon. or a thunderstorm. not going to be very widespread, but we could see some saturday afternoon. by sunday, still around 90 degrees. so if we hit 90 on saturday, that will be heat wave number three. next week, the heat still with us. 93, more humidity. showers and storms later in the day. 88 degrees there. look at these temperatures. they just continue for next week. we stay in the 90s. so we're going to be staying in a hot pattern for a while. i really don't see much relief anytime soon, aside from the rain on tuesday. but remember, that excessive heat is going to continue tomorrow. we'll take a closer look at that coming up with your weekend forecast. no matter which neighborhood you
