we have a first alert out because of this. for pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware, that is for today. but also until tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow will be another hot day. temperatures mid-90s. humidity, feeling around 100, just like it does right now. stay hydrated, avoid several hours outside. excessive heat warning out, and the heat advisory through parts of the area. basically tomorrow it will be another really hot day. don't be outside for several hours at a time. it's too dangerous for that. you definitely do not want to leave children and animals in a car with the windows rolled up. way too hot for that, too. we'll look at how this is going to play into the weekend, because there is a heat wave in the forecast. we'll take a look at that coming up. also your seven-day right at the bottom of your screen. you'll be able to see how much longer this is going to last. in fact, it's not just today and tomorrow, we have 90s through the weekend and hot and humid into next week as well. that's straight ahead. we're following breaking news now, coming out of southern

france. nbc 10's keith jones joining us in the breaking news center. >> jim, we just got this information right here. nbc news reports dozens of people dead. in fact -- this is an nbc news special report. here's lester holt. we're following a tragic situation unfolding in nice, france, right now. and something that could be right now being regarded as a possible terror attack. at many as dozens killed. according to french media at a bastille day celebration in the seaside city of nice. early pictures of people fleeing after a truck apparently plowed through a crowd of people. they were watching fireworks at the time, late evening there in nice, france. our kelly cobilla is monitoring events. kelly, what can you tell us? >> reporter: lester, we understand from witnesses that this white truck plowed into the crowd celebrating bastille day

on the beachfront promenade. there are reports of gunfire following that. exchange of gun fire between gunmen and police. however, that has not yet been confirmed. french media, french tv station is reporting dozens dead, and several injured. again, those numbers have not been confirmed by nbc news. but we understand that the mayor and police are telling people at this point to remain inside. a lot still unknown, lester, at this point, as the situation develops in nice. >> kelly cobilla watching things from the london bureau. one eyewitness reports bodies everywhere after that truck plowed into a crowd. again, being regarded as a possible terror attack right now. but certainly a calamity happening during a day of celebration in france today. it's bastille day on that promenade along the shore in nice, france.

we'll continue to follow that. in fact, we'll be going up on the east coast in less than a half an hour in the central time zone with nbc nicely news with more on this. also developments in the vp picks as donald trump makes his choice for a running mate. continuing coverage on msnbc, of course. i'm lester holt in new york. now to the anticipated decision, who will donald trump pick as his running mate. indiana governor mike pence seems to be the front-runner. confirming that he left indiana to new york where trump plans to announce his pick tomorrow. it was a media circus outside governor pence's home in indianapolis. about two hours ago, tv crews reported pence left the mansion and has not returned. donald trump has said he wants someone with experience in washington. pence has been indiana's governor since 2013. but before that, he served six terms in congress.

and this morning pence tweeted about his hoosier state. and touted lower taxes and how he helped create jobs. donald trump jr. said it's down to three candidates. governor pence, new jersey governor chris christie and former speaker of the house newt gingrich. aundrea? >> chris christie makes it clear that he wants to be the vice presidential nominee. but he said if he does not get the job, his focus remains on getting donald trump elected president. >> there's no one who is better prepared -- >> reporter: new jersey governor chris christie also serves as a chairman of donald trump's transition team. a vice presidential contender, he talks about the possibility of not being tapped as the job. >> i won't go up to the batting cage and hit off the machine. i'll just go back to work. i've got work this afternoon as governor. that i've got to do. i'll go back and do that. and not worry about it. >> reporter: christie said his desire to beat hillary clinton literally trumps his personal

ambition. >> put aside your ego, put aside which office in the white house you want, the product is the most important thing. that's whether i'm vice president or head of the transition. that's what i'm focused on. >> reporter: according to nbc news, there are signs that trump may choose mike pence for the job. but the final decision has not been officially announced. >> he'll be a great attorney general. i think he'll clean up the mess that we have right now down there. >> reporter: christie said he hasn't thought that far ahead. his term as governor lasts until january. >> the next president of the united states, donald j. trump. >> reporter: and he's still working to get donald trump elected. >> if there's something he wants me to do, he's not shy. he'll ask. >> chris christie continues to be an adviser to trump. he said if elected, he'll consider any offer trump gives him. aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. once again, donald trump's official announcement on his running mate will be tomorrow

morning 11:00 a.m. we'll cover it live on air and on the nbc 10 app. i'll travel to cleveland this sunday for our republican national convention coverage. we will have you covered all next week, right here on nbc 10, beginning sunday at 11:00. a new nbc news poll looks at pennsylvania as the key battleground state coming up in november. the racial gap, it is big in the keystone state. check out the difference between african-american voters in p.a. hillary clinton has 91% of the vote. but as for donald trump, he got zero. for white voters, it is a tie, both candidates at 40%. of that vote, as for hillary clinton, about two hours ago, she campaigned with virginia senator tim caine. cain a&e has been mentioned as a possible running mate. league of united latin american citizens, clinton criticized trump's record on immigration

and hispanics. >> donald trump is running the most divisive campaign of our lifetime. his message is that you should be afraid. afraid of people whose ethnicity is different, whose religious faith is different, or who were born in a different country. >> clinton promised to introduce comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship. a reminder that the democratic national convention begins in just 11 days. right there, the wells fargo center. to other news now, the first confirmed case this year of the west nile virus in new jersey. last week the 48-year-old began showing symptoms, including a headache, and swelling of the brain. he is still in the hospital right now. everyone's encouraged to use bug spray if you're spending time outside between dusk and dawn. you can get the west nile virus when an infected mosquito bites you. today we got our first look at the cracks on the septa

trains that caused that long slowdown. septa still doesn't know why there are cracks on dozens of cars that make up a third of the transit agency's fleet. nbc 10's rosemary connors got a closer look at the problem. >> cleaning up all the paint and dirt. to confirm the cracks. >> reporter: the red mark is dye that penetrates and highlights the crack. it may look like a minor issue, but septa engineers insist this is a big problem. the transit agency found cracks in the suspension system on 115 of its 120 silverliner cars, all of them are now offline. >> obviously not going to put a cracked weld, or a bead back into service. we need to understand all the stresses. >> reporter: ron hopkins, septa's assistant gem mananeral manager of operations, said septa can't give a specific timeline of when the riders can resume their normal schedules.

>> here's the equalizer beam. >> reporter: he explains septa is looking at both temporary and permanent solutions. while the priority is to get the cars back on track quickly, safety cannot be compromised. >> after the inspection, putting the fleet down, we need to build the confidence of the public that when we return the cars to service, that they're safe. there's a lot of things that go into the fix. >> septa said it was an inspector who discovered the problem after first noticing a car leaning on the tracks in the maintenance yard. septa hopes to have more answers next week when material from the broken parts returns from the lab. i'm rosemary connors. jim, back to you. >> rosemary, thank you. you'll soon be able to text 911 if you're in trouble in camden county. new technology will make the communication center one of the first in new jersey to accept those texts. send a text if your phone isn't an option because it's dangerous or because you don't have reception. it's useful for people who are

hearing impaired. camden's waterfront skyline will get another huge addition. water works will move its corporate headquarters to a $1 billion facility in camden. we're going to go right now, though, to a special report once again from nbc news in new york. this dealing with donald trump's pick for vice president. let's go to new york. announced that mike pence, the governor of indiana, will be his vice presidential running mate. that announcement expected to happen officially at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning in new york. katy tur is standing by to tell us more. >> reporter: sources within the campaign and sources close to the candidate tell me tonight that donald trump will choose indiana governor mike pence. that announcement will be made tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. this is after much deliberation within the campaign, and within donald trump himself. today the three final contenders were former house speaker newt

gingrich, new jersey governor chris christie, and indiana governor mike pence. donald trump took a lot of time, talked to people inside his campaign, outside his campaign, people who were close to him. even some of his security members asking what their opinions were. the campaign was most impressed with governor pence, however. when pence took the stage with donald trump a couple of days ago in indiana, the campaign and trump himself were surprised at the amount of energy he had. the amount of -- the ability he had to go after hillary clinton, to be the attack dog. they expected him to be quiet. they expected his personality not necessarily to match with donald trump. they were surprised by that. behind the scenes, i'm told that the two personalities gelled quite well. and ultimately donald trump felt it was the right fit moving forward. not just for the rest of this campaign season, but for the next four and eight years to come, if he wins office. and then wins reelection. multiple sources still

cautioning, though, that donald trump is unpredictable. and that he can change his mind at any moment. but as we stand right now, lester, the choice is indiana governor mike pence. and he has just touched down in new jersey. >> all right. katy tur outside trump tower with that news. governor mike pence is the apparent pick of donald trump as his vice presidential running mate. we'll have a lot more on who he is and how this figures as the republicans march toward their convention in cleveland next we're. we're following another major story breaking in nice, france, where reportedly dozens have been killed in a truck that careened through a crowd of people celebrating bastille day in france. dozens killed. reports of bodies everywhere. officials are treating this right now as an attack. not confirmed, but treating it as an attack. it comes almost exactly eight months after the attack in paris that left 130 people dead at restaurants and a theater in paris. we continue to watch that

most revolves around a bar for hanging on 13 miles performing stunts over the beach and boardwalk from atlantic city to longport. it's how collin celebrated his birthday. >> i was like, wow. that's crazy. >> reporter: sky force 10 captured these shots. >> as we all watched in awe, wallenda on her lira, that circular trapeze over the ocean breeze. she shared with me the two things that she does before any stunt like this one. number one, stretch. >> of course, prayer. i can't get -- i do that every single day for everything. but that's what gives me the strength to do what i need to do. >> reporter: she said her family loves the adrenaline of the crowds here. >> this feels like a second home. and i just feel excited because i know that my husband was out there last time doing something.

so now i get my time. >> reporter: from atlantic city, cydney long, nbc 10 news. well, the dangerous heat continues. it is still with us today. it will be with us tomorrow, too. that's why we have a first alert out. feeling near 100 degrees. dangerous heat. boths today and tomorrow. that will be in the forecast for your friday afternoon. very much like what we have right now. feels like 100 degrees in philadelphia with the humidity. feels like 103 right now in dover. that is hot. 99 is what it feels like in wilmington. 99 degrees feels-like temperature in vineland. the seven-day at the bottom of the screen shows you how long the heat will continue. it will go all the way into next week. just don't be ready for a big cooldown just yet. weekend temperatures will still be hot. but the humidity will be lower. so it will feel a little bit more comfortable. won't be feeling like triple

digits. next week, the 90s in the forecast again. we also have some thunderstorms. so at least we'll see a little bit of relief. at least one day from the heat again. temperatures, actual temperatures, this is mid to low 90s. 92 degrees right now in wilmington. if we look at chester county, concordville at 92 degrees. 90 west bradford township. 93 phoenixville. if you're in chester heights. 90 degrees is your temperature right now. feeling hotter with the humidity. montgomery county, mainly mid-90s. 94 ft. washington. if you're in bensalem, temperature right now, 93 degrees. so a very hot afternoon. that's why we have the excessive heat warning out. heat advisories to everyone in pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware. expect this again tomorrow. so this will continue for your friday. mid-90s in the afternoon, feeling like triple digits. stay hydrated. avoid staying outside for

several periods at a time. we have thunderstorms move through earlier. cooled temperatures down for a bit. but now we'll be dry for the rest of tonight. no rain relief heading our way anytime soon. tomorrow morning it will be very warm and very humid to start your day. and quickly heating up. in philadelphia so far today, we've gotten to 96 degrees. we have felt as hot as about 101. tomorrow, 94. feeling around 100 degrees. by saturday, i mentioned the lower humidity. so we don't expect it to feel around 100 degrees saturday. temperatures will still be around 90 degrees. maybe feeling a couple of degrees warmer. at least it won't be as uncomfortable with all the humidity. this is future weather. now we're looking at tomorrow morning and through the middle of tomorrow. mostly dry. there's a chance we could see some pop-up showers trying to develop. shouldn't be too much, though, if any, and warm and humid for your friday evening. tomorrow, though, during the day, fairmont 94 degrees.

three players who could win rookie of the year honors this season. ben simmons, bead and this guy, dario landed in philadelphia just about an hour ago. the 12th overall pick of the 2014 draft agreed to terms earlier in the week. brett brown said the city of philadelphia will fall in love with sarge. how does sarge feel about being in philly? john clark caught up with the 6'10" forward. >> you had to pay money to get out of your contract. you could have made more money in the short term staying over there. why are you coming now? >> for me, most important is i stay after two years out there. i want to come here, and i did what's important for me. >> ben simmons has been ruled out of tonight's summer league game against the nets. the team wants to look at the organization's other prospects. ryan has signed a two-year guaranteed contract with the san antonio spurs.
