nbc 10 breaking news. that breaking news, terror in france tonight. scores dead after a truck plows through a crowd on a national holiday. i'm jim rosenfield. late tonight, france extended its state of emergency for another three months. the country already on alert

from the paris attacks back in november. and now on bastille day, an attack in the city of nice. the truck was filled with weapons and grenades and drove through crowds of people who are gathered to watch fireworks. the driver ran over people for a mile. eventually, he got out and started shooting before police killed him. investigators call it a terror attack, but no one's claimed responsibility tonight. nbc 10's keith jones is live in the breaking news center. the attack in france hitting close to home for some in philadelphia. >> reporter: we went trait to the freps quarter. while they were celebrating bastille day, thoughts and prayers went up to the victims in france. we want to warn you, some of the video you're about to see some might find disturbing. >> reporter: new video of the truck. police appear to shoot at the driver who speeds up into a

large crowd. people run for their lafrps. terrified on a holiday reserved for joyous celebration. >> it's terrible. how can you stop this is this you don't ever know where. >> reporter: patrick feels it could happen here in philadelphia where they celebrated bastille day with heavy hearts. >> we have to work for peace, not for hate. and we've got to pull it together. i believe we can do it. >> we cannot, especially on this day, let this happen. >> reporter: she stands firm, as everyone, including the honorable consul of france awaits more information. >> my heart goes out to the people who lost their lives and the friends and relatives. at this point we don't know much more about it. >> reporter: back in their homeland, the french hope for peace, resolution and healing. at least 80 people were killed,

including some children. president obama condemned the attack and reaffirmed america's solidarity and partnership with france. from that attack in france to a threat in philadelphia. someone september a letter to the african-american museum, threatening an attack during the democratic national convention. it's a story you saw first on nbc 10. brandon hudson is live. what have you learned tonight? >> reporter: the museum isn't letting the letter close them down. it will be open tomorrow and will move ahead with its new exhibit. we don't know where the letter came from, but police are taking this very seriously. while we waited to talk to the african-american museum's president and ceo, homeland security investigators finished up their initial investigation inside. moments later, we got some insight on this potentially dangerous situation. >> this morning we received a threatening letter at the museum. >> reporter: museum president

and ceo patricia wilson aden didn't answer any questions, but law enforcement sources say the letter mentioned a group, possibly white supremacists would carry out the attack. we spoke to a couple from california who wanted to visit the museum. >> very disheartening that this is where we are. >> reporter: today the heads of the homeland security department and fbi spoke at a house hearing about the need to ramp up security for the dnc and rnc in cleveland next week. >> there's a risk that groups that appear to do just that, to engage in acts of domestic terror e will be attracted. >> reporter: back in philadelphia, the museum had a mm staff meeting before it closed for the evening. aden wouldn't share the details but encourages the public to keep visiting. >> i'm just sad and scared. >> it's a shame that people hate that much and want to ruin something as beautiful as this. >> reporter: just to give you an idea where we are.

philadelphia police headquarters is a short walk from where we're standing. the african-american museum will host an event for the dnc to recognize the dnc and celebrate the museum's 40-year history. turning to severe weather. in new jersey, rain led to flooding in jersey city, hudson county. can you see the left lanes blocked with heavy water. and a house caught fire after a lightning strike. but here in our area, the big story was the heat. today was the hottest day we've had this year. here's timeline video. even after sundown, the weather stayed hot. let's go to sheena. more dangerous heelts tomorrow? >> that's right. you mentioned today was the hottest day so far this year. it was. we felt around 101 at a point in

fichl. some parts of delaware felt like 104. but we have the first alert for tomorrow. pennsylvania suburbs, num neighborhoods and northern delaware. extreme heat and humidity is making it feel around 1 hundred degrees. right now we're in the mid-80s, but it feels more like 90 degrees. that excessive heat warning is out from newcastle county. so dangerous heat. temperatures feeling like triple digits. you want to stay hydrated. it's going to be another really hot day, and the heat's going to continue going into the weekend. but maybe a little less humid. we'll take a look at the forecast and any rain chances coming up. to decision 2016. donald trump is postponing the official announcement of his vice president pick. he says it would be

inappropriate after the attack in france. sources say his pick is indiana governor pence. >> a cable news outlet said he hadn't made a final decision. but the clock is ticking, and it appears new jersey governor chris christie won't be on the ticket. indiana governor mike pence flew into new jersey tonight. nbc news learned he planned to be in manhattan for an event tomorrow morning, an event now postponed because of an overseas attack. trump met yesterday with the former congressman serving his first term as governor. >> here in indiana we've been proving every day we can balance the budget. >> pence is such a good fit. >> reporter: a temple university professor says pence would balance trump out. >> the kind of halarger than li personality he is and the rock of gibraltar pence brings to the campaign. >> reporter: the short list also

included newt gingrich and governor christie who told msnbc he would like to be vp, but it won't crush him if he's not. >> you don't like coming in second ever. but i won't need to go back to the batting cage and hit off the machine. i'll just go back to work. >> reporter: if trump wins, christie could still be appointed to a cabinet position. the vp news comes on the same day a crihristie ally pleaded guilty over the bridge gate scandal. >> that scandal has not gone away yet. >> and the timing is interesting here. tomorrow at noon is the deadline for governor pence to get his name off the ballot for a second term as indiana's governor. trump's son said he will likely announce the vp over the weekend. >> and we have a reporter

we are apparently a nation of angry drivers. a new aaa study shows road rage is on the rise. eight out of ten drivers lost it on the roads in the last year. men three times more likely to act out than women. and drivers in the northeast were found to be more aggressive than other parts of the country. >> they give you the look.

have been prevented. >> they did not have the lights correct for her to be safe when she crossed this street. >> investigators are still searching for the driver of mini van involved in the crash. today we got a look at the cracks in the septa rail cars, but they don't know what caused them. it leaves thousands of regional rail riders with less service and fewer seats. they hope to have more answers next week when material returns from the lab. the dare devil wallenda family is back in the headlines for another eye-popping stunt. look at this, the wife of nik wallenda dangled 100 feet above the ocean, doing flips in that circular trapeze. she said it's her passion.

hour. we go into the weekend. it's going to be still hot. but humidity's going to be a little lower, so we're not going to expect the triple denlity feel to the heat. but the 90s will be coming back with the humidity. and thunderstorms in the forecast. no big relief anytime soon, excessive heat warping is out tomorrow. mercer county down to newcastle. and also for new jersey, we have an air quality alert for tomorrow, unhealthy ozone levels because of this weather pattern. if you have asthma, elderly or children you'll want to avoid several hours outside or strenuous activity. and even with the heat, stay hydrated, too. today we hit 96 degrees. we felt around 101. today was the hottest day of the year. tomorrow we expect 94, feeling right around 100.

the humidity is not going to be as bad. here's future weather, when you wake up, warm and humid. by around lunch time there's a chance of showers developing across parts of the lehigh valley. it will provide a little rain relief, but not for everybody at all then, if you have the friday night plans, we expect to be dry but warm and humid. allentown, 92 with the chance of a thunderstorm possible. atlantic city, 88 degrees. wilmingto wilmington, 92 degrees. really, most of the day, i think it's going to stay on the drier side for most of the area. but the weekend forecast, again, it's going to be hot, but the humidity a little lower. to the politics of pokemon. yeah, the popular game is now
