cline-thomas. and you're learning more about the gunman. >> reporter: this shooting is being called and ambush. gavin long op kansas city, missouri. but law enforcement is not sure if he acted alone. >> these men risking their lives to protect and serve this community were taken out the way that they were. they are real life everyday heroes. >> reporter: just before 9:00 this morning baton rouge officers responded to a call about a man near a gas station and convenience store carrying a rifle. law foerlt were met with gun fire. two police officers and one sheriff's deputy were killed. three other officers are injured, one of them is fighting for his life. >> each one of these individuals married. each one of these individuals have family. >> reporter: the shooter has been identified as gavin long of

kansas city, month. authorities believe he was the lone gunman. >> we believe the person that shot and killed our officers, that he is a person that was shot and killed at the scene. >> reporter: it comes as tensions continue to mount in baton rouge after officers killed an african-american man and dallas officers were targeted in another ambush less than two weeks ago. it's renewing calls for prayer and peace in a community whose grief today reached new depths. >> until we come together as a nation, as a people to heal as a people, if we don't do that and this madness continues, we will surely perish. >> reporter: as expected, news of the shooting is having effects right here at home. we checked and the philadelphia police department tells us its officers are riding in pairs in response to the recent attacks. reporting live in the breaking news center, i'm aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. back here at home, thousands

spent the day biking to support families of fallen officers. it was all part of the tour de tour fund-raiser. drew smith has a latest and a special tribute in ocean city. >> reporter: yeah, and denise, we've been talking to people. they want to show as much support as they can for the police. right now this is a softball tournament happening in ocean city. they've done this for years, but tonight they pause before the championship game to say thanks to ocean city officer and remember the police lives lost in texas and louisiana. ♪ o say can you see ♪ by the dawn's early light >> reporter: this ocean city softball organization presented a plaque to local officers thanking them for service and sacrifice. this tribute was originally planned after the dallas shootings, but now they're also honoring the officers killed in baton rouge. up the coast in atlantic city,

bike riders arrive at the finish line for the tour de shore fund-raiser which helps families of fallen officers. when they pedaled out of philly they couldn't imagine they finished the ride hearing news of another attack on officers in this country. >> it's sad. just an all-out attack on law enforcement. it's really not necessary and our heart goes out. >> reporter: it's tough, it's sad. it makes us angry. but on the other hand, when the outpour of support for us comes through, it reinforces why we put the badge on. >> reporter: the crowd tried to remain upbeat and stay focused on why it was important to come out. >> we got fund-raisers over there for the fallen officers in dallas. everybody is contributing. brings people together. >> reporter: friends of police officers say it's more important than ever to reach out. >> i guess talk to them every day, make sure they're okay. that's the best you can do. and support them. >> reporter: and the new jersey police benevolent association

also put out a statement tonight saying that our thin blue line has been stretched these past few weeks, but it will not break. we're live in ocean city. i'm drew smith, nbc 10 news. and a call to come together today in the wake of violence that's hit communities across the country and and the world. several dozen people gathered for a peaceful march along germantown avenue in mount airy. they were urging people to unite in order to make a difference and create change in the world. >> this is not about spreading hatred or to bash anyone. this is about showing unity and showing that we're standing up for something as a community. we want a change to happen and we want a change to happen now. >> reporter: the organizers say the change they're looking for starts inside homes and in the community. and count on nbc 10 for your continuing coverage of the story. you can also tap on the nbc 10 app any time to get updates on the ambush investigation and to see tributes to the fallen

officers. turning now to our weather, the heat is on and nbc 10 in lansdow lansdowne, delaware county as these folks cool down with ice cream on international ice cream day. many are choosing the jersey shore. here's a look at cape may, where some people are out on the beach. maybe some will take a dip in the water soon. today marks day four of our heat wave. but how long will it last? let's get a check from meteorologist karen thomas. >> how long will the heat wave last? here we've got your message in terms of weather story. heat and humidity building in for tomorrow. so today was just a really lovely day. 92 degrees for high temperature in philadelphia, but theqqu point was down just a little bit especially along the shoreline there. it didn't feel so excessive. however, humidity building back. dew points rising for tomorrow. it is currently 91 degrees right now in philadelphia. there seems to be the hot spot.

87 in wilmington. 90 in dover. temperatures dipping down through the overnight but not too much relief. we talked about the wind down the shoreline. we did have some wind gusts down there this morning and picking up through the afternoon. what we can expect for tomorrow, though, look at these temperatures 96 degrees in chestnut hill. you get the message. we're on a roller coaster ride. i'll be back with more weather details in a bit. now to decision 2016. a little philadelphia flavor in cleveland as local republican delegates await the start of the rnc tomorrow. >> divided we lose, united we win. >> and that's the message these 30 republican delegates and their alternates are taking to cleveland. our camera was rolling for the predeparture rally this morning. the group was optimistic as they loaded up and boarded their bus for their seven-hour trip to ohio. now, this was the scene a short

time ago as the delegation reached their des ination. not even a long ride could dampen their spirits as they offloaded at their home away from home in cleveland for the next few days. you can see that excitement. the final security sweeps are under way at the start of the national republican convention. inside quicken loans arena, final improvements are being made to the main stage where donald trump will accept the party's presidential nomination. officials say in light of recent events around the country, they're making sure they leave no stone unturned when it comes to security. >> i think that everything that you can possibly be do iing to describe cleveland right now is prepared. >> cleveland's mayor says there are no credible threats against the convention and the city is prepared to handle anything that might happen. nbc 10 is in cleveland, and we sent the largest team of local reporters to the rnc. nbc 10 tracy davidson, lauren

mayk and jim rosenfield will be there tonight at 11:00. straight ahead we'll tell you about security plans for when the democratic national convention comes to town. plus who is up and who is down? we'll tell you where the race for president stands today with a new presidential poll. plus, a double murder mystery in philadelphia after a man and woman are found dead in a local motel. and police were called to the roosevelt motor inn in the city's rawnhurst neighborhood today. a man and woman were found unresponsive with white plastic bags over their heads and their hands tied behind their backs. they were pronounced dead at the scene. no arrests have been made. a man is in the hospital after the plane he was piloting crashed in south jersey. officials say the ultralight plane went down near the pemberton airport in burlington county. the pilot suffered broken bones in both legs, no word on the

severity of his injuries. no other injuries were reported. now, investigators are looking into what caused the crash. septa slowdown no more. how regional rail riders could get more relief as they head back to work this week. plus another show of support. we'll tell you how people in our area honored the police officers killed in baton rouge today.

very good news for septa rail riders. septa will be adding an additional from the maryland area commuter service tomorrow. it will add another five later on in the week. septa will also adjust regional rail schedules to address crowding. septa had to pull its entire silver liner five fleet from service because of defective steel beams.

a chronic condition that impairs movement of his arms. it told me everything i need to know about his heart and what he believes deep down. priorities usa action is responsible for the content of this advertising. and now for the latest on breaking news we're following today from baton rouge where six police officers were shot. three of them died. the gunman died during a shoot-out with police. and several law enforcement officials have identified him as gavin long of kansas city. authorities say they believe he was the only shooter, but two persons of interest are being detained in a nearby town. and a planned remembrance in delaware county for the victims of last week's terror in nice, france, took on new meaning today after news broke about the violence in baton rouge. >> three of our law enforcement officers have been killed.

>> the baptist church had both communities on their minds as they celebrated the church's tenth anniversary today. worshipers offered a special prayer for the people of batton rouge and nice. the republican national convention is just hours away, and the dnc will open here in philadelphia in just eight days kicking off at the wells fargo center july 25th. security plans for the upcoming convention are already having an impact on local residents. starting next sunday, no parking will be allowed along the broad street median for the duration of the convention. and that means many south philadelphia residents will have to plan ahead and find a new place to park. >> i have no idea what i'm going to do. it will be a really big issue. i'll probably get a few parking tickets. if i have to pay to park my car. i have to stay at my house, you know? >> a lot of the mailboxes in the
