quicken loans arena when this kicks off tomorrow at 1:00 in the afternoon. we'll show you how security here has been affected by situations like today's ambush down south. first we want to send it back to denise nakano back in philadelphia with the latest on the ambush in baton rouge. >> the nation's attention is once again shifted to a deadly ambush against officers. three officers are dead, three others are hurt. and one is described as fighting for his life. the officers were shot after they responded to a report of a man with a gun. police say the shooter was killed and his motive remains unknown. >> chaos followed an all too familiar call of officers down. >> shot fires. officer down. shots fired, officer down. >> officers responded to a 911 call of a man dressed in black fatigues walking down the highway. this cell phone video captures the ambush that killed two

police officers and one sheriff's deputy. >> these men risking their lives to protect and serve this community were taking out -- taken out the way that they were. >> the officers who died were married and leave behind children. deputy brad garafola, a father of four. officer matthew gerald with baton rouge police department four months and officer montrell jackson, a new father recently shared on social media what it was like to be black and a police officer. i swear to god, i love this city but wonder if the city loves me. in uniform i get nasty, hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat. police shot and killed a lone shooter gavin long of kansas city, a marine veteran who served in iraq. the ambush comes less than two weeks after the police-involved shooting death of alton sterling resulting in nationwide protests. days later, five officers were shot and killed in dallas.

sterling's aunt calling for an end to senseless violence. >> we don't call for no bloodshed. that's how this all started. with bloodshed. we don't want no more bloodshed. >> prayers are with the most critically injured surviving officer. president obama saying attacks on police are an attack on all of us. protesters hit the streets of philadelphia chanting black lives matter and calling for equal treatment of african-americans when it comes to the investigation of police brutality. marchers made their way down broad street from north philadelphia to center city blocking traffic in many spots. and police say there were no arrests. philadelphia police officers continue riding in pairs tonight. the change was made to ensure officer safety after the deadly ambush on police officers in dallas ten days ago. >> sad. it really is sad. it's just an all-out attack on law enforcement.

it's really not necessary and our heart goes out. >> it's tough. it's sad. it makes us angry. but on the other hand, when the outpouring of support for us comes through, it reinforces why we put the badge on. >> today the ocean city fast pitch organization presented plaques to local officers thanking them for their service and sacrifice. in light of this attack in baton rouge, and the violence in dallas and nice, france, security concerns are high for the republican national convention which starts tomorrow. some 5,500 officers are assigned to convention security. let's go back live to nbc 10's jim rosenfield who is in cleveland monitoring the security concerns. jim? >> denise, this convention has long been designated a national security event. the u.s. secret service is in charge of trying to keep people safe here. we walked the streets of cleveland this afternoon and this evening. it's really a party atmosphere

out there, but it's designed to make delegates feel at home, but they will find security is tight when they try to get in here. the welcome signs are out in cleveland. the visitors are rolling in. inside the q, 125,000 patriotic balloons are ready for the big event. so, too are more than 5,000 law enforcement officers, including 3,000 federal officers in town assigned to rnc security. convention officials tell nbc 10's tracy davidson the security plan has been a constant work in progress. especially in light of recent police-involved shootings, national protests and officer deaths, including today's violence in baton rouge. >> if i were to use one word to describe cleveland right now, it's prepared. >> reporter: prepared with a fortress of checkpoint s and fencing. philly ph ph >> it definitely heightens your awareness of things. >> reporter: security on

people's minds. i want to check in with lauren make who is down below me on the convention floor. she's been dith delegates as they've been arriving. is security an issue for them right now? are they worried? >> jim, it is certainly on their mind. they are aware of it, but they also know that there is going to be a lot of security here for a lot of people. and there are more than 600 people from pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware here. that's not just delegates but also party officials, alternates and guests. and i was with them as some of them rolled into town today. >> trump! trump! trump! >> reporter: the chants and the signs got out. >> i am a trumpster. i go everywhere i can. i go door to door. he's our man. he is the man. >> you're pretty excited to be

here. >> you can't tell? >> yes, i am. >> inside the hotel, delegates and party loyal will find some comforts of home like yeungling beer and utz potato chips. there are signs of the convention everywhere from celebration to precaution. a long security line to get into this big party. dozens of officers on bikes riding through downtown as it swells with visitors. among those making the trek from pennsylvania today, congressman tom merino. >> hard working taxpayers are fed up with the republican establishment and democratic establishment. >> merino endorsed him early. >> some of them have not. some of them are not even here this week. what does it say? >> just because they're not here this week doesn't mean they are refraining from supporting him. i know that for a fact. >> reporter: he expects support to grow. convention week is traditionally a time for parties to come together and gear up for the

that heat wave continues for a fourth straight night. there's no relief coming for us tomorrow. you're looking live at center city from our kimmel center campus camera where it was slightly less humid today, but temperatures still topped 90. it will feel more smothering tomorrow. let's go to meteorologist karen thomas for the first alert forecast. >> i like that word, smothering. it's getting warmer by the time we get to tomorrow. mostly clear tonight with temperatures dipping down mainly in the upper 60s, lower 70s. heat and humidity building in for our monday. think of a steamy monday for tomorrow as we start off our next workweek. temperatures really not cooling off quickly this evening either. still in the '80s in philadelphia. 83 degrees. 80 degrees here in wilmington and 80 degrees currently in dover, delaware. so we're talking heat wave three. we did top out at 92 degrees for

a high temperature in philadelphia. we're headed to 95 for a high temperature tomorrow. and so this is what we mean. we started back here on thursday. and the heat wave will be continuing tomorrow. humidity coming back into the picture tomorrow. so it is going to feel oppressive. but we're keeping a close eye on some storms, possibly severe, coming in tomorrow afternoon. i'll be back with that in a bit. >> new at 11:00, a northeast philadelphia restaurant goes up in flames. the story was first on the nbc 10 app. you can see crews trying to extinguish this fire at applebee's restaurant. fortunately everyone managed to make it out safely. no injuries were reported. the tensions in turkey have calmed after a coup attempt two days ago. but efforts are heating up to get a man from pennsylvania sent back to turkey to face justice for that uprising. plus, circling the city with love. that's what people in cleveland are trying to do after another

from the nbc 10 delaware bureau, a local community is on lockdown as police search for a gunman. these pictures were sent to nbc 10 of the situation at the germantown manor apartment complex in new castle county. police are asking everyone to stay inside. no word if anyone was shot or

injured. at last check, part of route 273 has been closed while the investigation continues. an update on the deadly attack on police officers in baton rouge. three officers were killed and three others wounded following an attack at a gas station less than a mile from police headquarters. police say the suspect, 29-year-old gavin long, was shot and killed at the scene. it's unclear whether he acted alone. it comes less than two weeks after a black man was shot and killed by baton rouge police in a confrontation that sparked nightly protests across the city. a call to come together today in the wake of violence that hit communities across the country. several dozen people gathered for a peaceful march along germantown avenue in mount airy. they were urging people to unite in order to make a difference and create change in the world.

a planned remembrance in delaware county for the victims of last week's terror in nice, france, took on new meaning today after news broke about the violence in baton rouge. agape international baptist church in lands down had both communities on their minds as they celebrated the church's tenth anniversary. unity was on display in cleveland today. hundreds of people from the group circle the city with love held hands across the hope memorial bridge for thu30 minut of silence. a gesture to show the world what they say cleveland stands for ahead of the rnc. >> i don't care who becomes president. i don't care what happens. all that i care about is that everybody, no matter what happens, care about each other and don't just treat people who they are or what they want to be or anything like that. >> she said it right there. the group applauded dozens of bike officers who rode across the bridge during the rally.

coming up, we'll go back live to cleveland to check in on all the preparations from the start of the republican national convention tomorrow. nbc 10's jim rosenfield joins s again in about 20 minutes. turkey's justice minister says his government expects washington to extradite the pennsylvania-based islamic cleric accused of orchestrating the attempted coup. turkey will be submitting the necessary documentation but hopes the u.s. will extradite fethullah gulen. he lives in the poconos and denies any involvement in the plot. turkish officials arrested more than a dozen judges and prosecutors and a high ranking military official today following that failed military coup. 11 have been put under arrest so far. at least 294 people were killed in clashes when parts of the turkish military attempted to seize power. today mourners gathered in

so dry tonight. tomorrow, the weather pattern will become active, especially later on in the day. doppler showing us that we are dry. dry conditions. a big bubble of high pressure right here that is keeping the clouds and precipitation away for now. but what we can expect is the possibility of some of the storms rolling through later tomorrow afternoon. especially north and west of philadelphia. it could become somewhat severe. keeping a close eye on the systems rolling through late tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours. futurecast will take you hour through hour. we see most of the day we are sun filled. that's going to help to build the heat and humidity. the approach of a cold front coming in from the ohio valley. a line of storms and rain cells setting up. keep your eye to the sky and down here at the shore line

later on in the evening. that's when rumbles of thunder can be expected to roll through tuesday morning. some residual shower, cloud cover. by tuesday afternoon, it should be out of here. so for tomorrow, the timeline in atlantic city, waking up mostly clear but warming up very, very quickly. and as i mentioned, it would be tomorrow night into tuesday morning down along the shoreline that those potential storms would roll through. so that would be much later. ten-day forecast in philadelphia, not doing too bad. we've got midweek cooldown that i think a lot of people are ready for. especially after a five-day heat wave. >> i'm danny pommells from comcast sports net. coming up, how they kept the phillies offense off balance today. plus, supposed to be a time to chill. what had the young and old so upset today. we'll show you.

three are injured. tonight, police say the killer is dead, but it's not clear if he acted alone. and investigators still are not sure about his motives. thanks for staying with us. i'm denise nakano this latest attack has elevated concerns for both presidential conventions. the dnc next week in philadelphia and the rnc which starts tomorrow in cleveland. let's go to jim rosenfield who is in cleveland previewing the rnc tonight. >> everything seems to be in place here at the q, home to the world champ cavs, of course. it has taken an army of 300 people every day to transform this place into team trump. a little by the numbers here for you. 3,000 permanent seats were removed to make room for the stage and other infrastructure. 2,472 chairs were added on the floor for all the delegates. but 21,000 people are expected to attend the week-long series

of events here with 15,000 journalists to share highlights across the globe. >> much like the democrats at the wells fargo center, the republicans have had about a month to transform the home of the cavaliers into donald trump's house. so where are our local delegations going to be sitting? new jersey, front row seats right there in front of the speaker. pennsylvania, also kind of front row seat to the left of the speaker's podium. what about the first state? the first state is all the way down here almost in the last row. you see them? could you make out delaware there among the delegations? this all kicks off tomorrow at 1:00. the theme for tomorrow, "make america safe again." appropriate given everything we've been going through across the country and overseas as well. denise? >> sure is. jim, the list of keynote spokers is out tonight. who can we expect to take the

stage? >> among the keynoters tomorrow, former new york mayor rudy giuliani. former arkansas governor mike huckabee and the primetime speaker will include donald trump's wife melania who will speak for maybe seven to ten minutes and included during her remarks, she is expected to honor and recognize military members in the hall right here. and more live coverage coming up tomorrow morning beginning at 4:00 a.m. with tracy davidson. be sure to tune in. >> we'll look for your reports throughout the week. thank you, jim. the head of cleveland's largest police union wants ohio governor john kasich to suspend the state's law allowing people to openly carry guns during the rnc. it's a pressure former commissioner charles ramsey supports. here's what he told msnbc on the phone today. >> these are extraordinary circumstances right now. and there's no time to have a debate in congress or anywhere else.

i mean, somebody's got to take action. i think that's the appropriate action in this case. why do you need to walk around with assault rifle swung over your shoulder or pistol on your side if you aren't a law enforcement officer in light of what's going on, especially in the event zones of either convention. >> kasich says ohio governors don't have the right to arbitrarily suspend laws. security will be high for the democratic convention at the wells fargo center just eight days from now. aundrea cline thomas looks at all the security measures going into place. >> you have to be authorized to get close to the wells fargo center. the tents are just one part of the transformation. but the action will not be isolated to this building. preparations are under way that will impact a lot of the city. growing tensions across the country, protesters are hitting the pavement trying to get their

voices heard. at the democratic national convention in philadelphia next week, the chants are expected to reach a fevered pitch. >> we'll be out here during the dnc. whatever to raise awareness for our people and the equal treatment they deserve. >> reporter: parking in the median of south broad street from washington to packer avenues will be banned starting next sunday. >> it's going to be a really big issue. probably going to get a few parking tickets. if i have to pay to park my car, i have to pay to park my car. one week from monday, mailboxes will be locked for safety reasons and ramp closures will also be in effect forcing commercial trucks over five tons to find an alternate route. whether you plan on participating in the convention or not, chances are you'll feel the impact. this weekend, organizations provided training to protesters so they can know their rights and also know the rules next

week. the dnc is making accommodations so they can be seen and heard. the goal is for everything to remain peaceful. reporting outside the wells fargo center, aundre aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. hillary clinton continues to lead donald trump by five points, 46% to 41%. the poll also finds clinton leads trump among african-americans and women and has an edge with younger voters. trump is ahead among whites and men. here in philadelphia, clinton got some support from former democratic presidential candidate martin o'malley today. the one-time governor of maryland spoke about the critical role pennsylvania could play in the general election. >> you're going to see a lot of states in play and contested. and one of those could well be pennsylvania. so here in north philadelphia could be the balance in tomorrowing the outcome of the entire presidential race when it

comes right down to it. >> o'malley spoke to clinton supporters at a campaign office in north philadelphia this afternoon. this after campaigning for clinton in center city yesterday. well, the heat wave that's smothering us for the last few days will be sticking around tomorrow. let's check in with meteorologist darryn thomkaren the latest on that. >> our temperatures will be dipping down but moving down slowly. 83 in center city, philadelphia. 79 in trenton. 75 in coatesville. close to 80 degrees in atlantic city. so temperatures dipping down into the lower 70s, upper 60s in the far outer lying suburbs. we've got a southerly push here south-southwesterly wind not doing too badly. 5 miles per hour in philadelphia.

but the steaminess will increase tomorrow. so expecting dew points to head upward tomorrow. plenty of sunshine, and we're looking for temperatures to be jumping. just about everywhere tomorrow is going to feel it. whatever you've been doing the last couple of days to stay cool, you'll want to find that cool spot tomorrow. maybe the beach, maybe a pool. maybe just air congress ditioni that's where you need to be. you'll see even in new jersey, this is interior inland, gloucester county, camden county, neighborhoods there in the '90s. the jersey show not too much of a break. we'll have a sea breeze there. still warm. and in delaware, looking for temperatures in the mid-90s. so tomorrow is going to be a mostly sunny day. when i come back, though, we'll break down keeping track on these potentials for thunderstorms coming through later in the day and early evening. >> thank you, karen. an american college student who was reported missing

following last week's deadly truck attack in france has now been confirmed dead. nicholas leslie, a student at the university of california berkeley had been studying in nice. the school confirmed his death. also today, a man and a woman were taken into custody. and that makes the sixth and seventh acquaintances of the suspect who have been arrested. this as the french community tries to cope. >> children passed away. people were having fun and passed away. and it's difficult to struggle because i will never hate them. because if i start hating them, they win. >> the current death toll stands at 84. 18 people remain on life support. in response to the attacks, france has called up to 12,000 reservists to help boost security. france's interior minister has appealed to all willing french patriots to sign up as reservists to help protect the country's borders. now to the vatican where

pope francis led a silent prayer for the victims of thursday's attack in nice, france. the pope prayed for the end of terror and death of innocents. ♪ in france, the sunday prayer service was held at nice's cathedral for the victims of the bastille day attack. and that attack in nice has heightened security concerns for olympics organizers. federal, state and local security officials took part in security simulation in brazil today. a sort of dry run that involved transportation and security logistics. brazilian and foreign officials say they're not aware of any credible threat to the games in terms of intelligence chatter. in just 19 days, the 2016 summer olympics will kick off in rio. the opening ceremony is set for august 5th. nbc 10's jacqueline london will be traveling to rio. watch all the action right here on nbc 10.

a standoff between police and a rape suspect who took hostages at a baltimore burger king ended peacely with the suspect surrender. swarms of police surrounded the restaurant for several hours. investigators say the armed man ran into the burger king after running from police after they tried to stop him at a traffic stop. they believe he held four people, including a 7-year-old girl, against their will. all the hostages made it out safely. now to a developing story out of northeast philadelphia where two bodies were found a local motel. police were called to the
