>> reporter: good morning. at the quicken loans arena or the q as they call it, in just a matter of hours, these he'd saets will be filled and the republican national convention gets under way. and we have you covered. to an update on the effort to unbind delegates, all that still ahead. but right now we want to get you updated on the forecast. there is a first alert because of the heat. >> that's right, conditions for today are going to be oppressive to say the least. we do have a heat hazard in effect where for philadelphia, suburbs, new jersey and delaware, we're considering heat indices over 100. so it's going to feel very, very hot all day today, very uncomfortable, until the early evening hours. national weather service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, that is all for now, however we want to keep you posted and follow us social

of the establishment republicans skipping the event, a colorful line of speakers. but the drama that was the potential for contested convention has come to an end. with one of the leaders of the never trump movement, steve lonegan, saying their effort to unbind delegates has failed. >> we believe we have the 28 going in, but unfortunately all of that pressure and all that -- i hate to use the word intimidation, but there was in-imdays. and the con joling and convincing. 16 people quit. >> reporter: the result, the effort to allow delegates vote their conscience died in the rules committee last week. lonegan says they don't have the support. >> in other words, the republican establishment in washington, d.c. has once again gotten their way to keep the republican party under control and make sure good conservative

fathers. three others injured. this ambush is just over a week after a sniper killed five officers in dallas, plus the controversial shooting death of alton sterling at the hands of baton rouge police. his aunt has called for an end to the blood shed. >> end of the day, these people called their families and told them that their taddyes and mom ma mamas not coming home no more. and i gut the same phone call. stop the killing. >> long was shot and killed. he spent five years in the marines including a tour of duty in the middle east. investigators are work to go learn if he had any accomplices. law enforcement officers from our area found out about the attack after finish willing the tour de shore fundraiser. >> it really is sad.

it's really not necessary and our hearts go out. >> it's tough, sad, it makes us angry. but on the other hand, when the outpour of support for us comes through, it reinforces why we put the badge on. >> the ocean city fast pitch organization presented plaques to local officers thanking them for sacrifice and service. several dozen people are calling for communities to come together in the wake of the violence. they gathered for a peaceful morning along germantown avenue in philadelphia's mount airy neighborhood yesterday. they urged people to unite to create change in the world. >> this is not about, you know, spreading hatred or to bash anyone. this is about showing unity and showing that we're standing up for something as a community. we want a change to happen and we want a change to happen now. >> organizers say that change they're looking for starts in the home and in the community.

philadelphia police officers will continue to ride in pairs. the which i think was made to ensure officer safety after the deadly ambush on police officers in dallas. a pennsylvania lawmaker will take on the catholic church today over child sex abuse by priests. he will join victims and advocates for reform outside st. peter and paul. he sponsored a bill that gets rid of the criminal statute of limitations for child sex crimes committed by priest, but an amendment that he wanted to allow past victims to sue the attackers was taken out of bill. also today city leaders will announce the first neighborhood schools that are chosen to be part of the community schools initiative. the schools will combine education with community wide services, everything from medical services to job training that would take place inside the schools. the city will invest nearly $40

million to transform 25 existing public schools in in to these community schools over the next five years. good morning. i'm erika martin. the national weather has issued an alert for the heat hazard it for the entire area through the evening hours. so we have a very hot day in the forecast. temperatures topping out in the low to mid-90s, but more importantly, dew points in the 60s and low 70s. so it's going to feel like it's in the hundreds. so a little extra tlc for pets and elderly. please do not leave your pets in car as. a line of storms just to the northwest of us, so active weather will be the next story later this afternoon into the evening hours. keep in mind we do have clouds developing from the northwest towards the southeast. so we will see some clouds moving through and then breaking right around 11:00 a.m., perhaps lunchtime. and then we'll see them redevelop as some showers start

to pick up and some isolated thunderstorms. here it is, hour by hour forecast, starting this at 4:00 a.m., and you can see those clouds starting to move in. not very thick at first. and then a little bit of a break. so keep in mind that we have the dew points already in the 60s and 70s. atmosphere is very juicy. by 4:00 p.m., we're seeing lines of embedded thormts. i actually do think some will be pretty strong because of the westerly component of the winds ranging anywhere with 10 and 25 miles per hour. a lot gustier along the shore line. 6:00 p.m., philly metro area, you can see those storms moving across towards the southeast. so again, for the evening commute, it looks like it could be a little bit of a headache. give yourself extra time, be sure to look at the bottom of your screen for your 7 day outlook. currently it's looking really nice and in fact full moon if you get outside and take a look quickly. 77 and notice southwesterly winds, but then they will start to shift. and that's when that trouble starts to begin as far as the storms are concerned.

directions north and southbound from 30 to the schuylkill expressway. speeds in the 60s also. heading town the shore, coming home from the shore, a few cars out on the roads on the garden state parkway but no problems. turkey is still reeling from a failed rcoup attempt. and now the turkish government is rounding up alleged coup supporters and they want an islamic cleric accused of orchestrating the taerk. we'll talk about the latest. plus finding good forever homes for animals in shelters can be a challenge especially for older animals and those that are sick. but there is one program in our area that is trying to give those animals a leg up with some free surgeries. we'll explain. when it's summer you can just feel it.

. we're just a few hours away from the start of the republican national convention. tracy davidson is live for us at the convention in cleveland, ohio. tracy, what has if been like there to see the rnc starting to take shape? it's very quiet inside the q, right? >> reporter: well, it's quiet, but in is still a lot of activity. for the last couple day, we've been saying last minute preparations. but we have time lapse video that shows the transformation of the q as they call it here. the france informatitransformat after the nba finals. the stage is using the most

technologically equipment available along with the huge screens. the lower screen is actually concaved and has the effect of bringing the audience a little closer to the stage. and we have it all by the numbers. so there are 3,000 seats that had to be removed. there are 2472 delegate floor seats. 21,000 people in all are expected to attend. including 15,000 journalists. and we have you covered on air, but also on social media as well. our whole team including myself, we have been tweeting and facebooking and instragraming. we're showing you the protests, security, the behind the scenes, talking with local delegates. so we have you covered round the clock. and coming up this morning, we talk to the head of the philadelphia gop committee who tells us what he thinks about what will happen here this week. for now, tracy davidson, nbc 10 news. well, there are so many animals in need of a good home

a lot of stronger westerly winds. and with the cold front sweeping through, notice that we start to see clouds develop and then break and redevelop by the afternoon hours. by 4:00 p.m., we're seeing some strong lines of storms here, so heads up now, you will need extra time for that evening commute. by 5:00, 6:00, stronger storms moving across the philly metro area and offshore, but it looks like everything starts to clear by the evening hours into early tomorrow morning. right now it's high and dry, full moon about 95%, looks pretty full right now. 77 degrees, southwesterly, 6 miles per hour. the issue is once those winds start to kick out of the west with that high pressure system, that is when we start to see the active weather develop in addition for the earlier part of the day, at least until the evening hour, notice the temperatures mainly in the 70s. and very warm right now. dew points already climbing into the 60s and 70s. so when we add those two together, it will feel like temperatures in the hundreds

plus. so keep in mind if you do have pets, elderly to take care of and people who have breathing issues, something to be mindful of. national weather service has issued a hazardous weather outlook. but if you follow us on social media, you'll have more updates. here is the wind profile. this is the next weather maker right behind me as that cold front dips on down. so again, we have the heat indices to deal with today, temperatures dealing in the hundreds. and then we have the thunderstorms later today. so uv indices moderate to high. very high by tomorrow. so thunderstorms for the first half of the day tomorrow, perhaps a couple of tray storms later. but wednesday will be dry and a little cooler. by thursday, already seeing 90s again and it looks like we hey get another heat wave by the following weekend. so the hot trend will break just
