big story of the morning. the police shooting in baton rouge, louisiana. three police officers were killed. three others were wounded when they were ambushed by a gunman who was dressed in all black. >> that suspect who was killed by other officers at the scene is now been identified as gavin long. he's a former marine whose 29th birthday was sunday, the day of this attack. >> police arrived at the scene after a 911 call of a man carrying the gun. the tipster was not the attacker or an accomplice to that attack. gabe gutierrez starts us off in baton rouge. gabe, good morning to you. >> savannah, good morning. this is where police say it all happened where someone called 911 and reported the gunman dressed in black fatigues armed with a rifle. now as a city mourns the fallen

officers, investigators pore over his twisted history. baton rouge is grieving as we learn identity of the officers killed. brad garafola, a sheriff's deputy. matthew gerald and montrell jackson. jackson posted his feelings about being a police officer in baton rouge. i love this city but i wonder if the city loves me. in uniform i get nasty looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat. i've experienced so much in my short life and these last three days have tested me to the core. he said if anyone sees me and you need a hug and prayer, come talk to me. >> reporter: police received reports of a man dressed in black wearing a mask and olding an ar-15 assault rifle at a gas

station. when officers arrived, the gunman opened fire. >> shots fired. shots fired. >> reporter: this morning police say the gunman did not lure police by that phone call but carried out the ambush after a member of the public called 911. the lone gunman is gavin long, shot dead at the scene on his 29th birthday. on july 8th, long posted a message about warriors on his youtube page. unclear if it's related to shootings this weekend. >> the man knew he couldn't go home. either he killed his enemy or he died. >> reporter: was this an ambush? >> we believe the individual that targeted these police officers was specifically targeting police officers. >> this comes two weeks after the shooting death of alton sterling by baton rouge police and the killing of philando

castile. >> attacks on police are an attack on all of us. >> reporter: alton sterling's aunt making an impassioned plea for peace. >> we don't want no more bloodshed. stop this killing. stop this killing. >> reporter: a sheriff's deputy this morning is said to be fighting for his life in critical condition after being shot in the head and torso. the other two wounded officers are recovering from nonlife threatening injuries. matt and savannah? >> gabe gutierrez in baton rouge for us. thank you. the gunman was a former marine sergeant. he was very active on social media. nbc justice correspondent pete williams has more on what we're learning about him. pete, good morning. >> witnesses say they thought officers were involved in the shooting but law enforcement officials now say they believe gavin eugene long acted alone. overnight police and federal agents searched his house in kansas city, missouri, and now

scouring his computers and electronic media for anything that would shed light on a motive. witnesses say a man inside that house with the gun was taken into custody. long had training with weapons. he served five years in the u.s. marine corps as a computer specialist and was deployed to iraq for six months in 2008. on a website where he called himself cosmo, he described himself as a freedom strategist, mental game coach and nutritionist but last week he apparently posted a twitter message "violence is not the answer, it's a answer. at what point do you stand up so your people don't become the native americans, extinct." he said protest isn't enough and people have to fight back. he was also part of an offshoot of a moment called sovereign citizens who don't recognize the authority of federal government or state or local government either. most followers are nonviolent. there have been deadly clashes with police in the past.

matt, savannah? >> all right, pete williams, thank you very much. that shooting and other violence across the country and around the world have heightened security concerns here in cleveland as this convention kicks off today. we'll talk to donald trump's campaign chairman and we have this convention covered from every angle beginning with peter alexander. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. layers of security just to get here to the arena. 5,500 law enforcement officers. some from as far away from california. all coordinated by the secret service. law and order in effect is going to take the floor here at this republican convention. in the wake of those shootings in baton rouge, donald trump said this country is divided and out of control and the theme for the first day here, make america safe again. with the curtain set to open inside on cleveland streets an unprecedented show of force including last-minute security changes in the wake of recent attacks. responding to the violence in

baton rouge and president obama's comments condemning it, donald trump again on the attack arguing the president doesn't have a clue. adding our country is a divided crime scene and it will only get worse. hillary clinton calling the shootings targeting officers an assault on all of us. the head of cleveland's police union urging the governor to declare a state of emergency. governor kasich's office insisting no can do. all of it the backdrop to an unpredictable convention with a gop ticket trying to show a united front on "60 minutes." trump slammed clinton for supporting the iraq war insisting mike pence's vote for it doesn't matter. >> your running mate voted for it. >> i don't care. >> what do you mean you don't care that he voted? >> it's a long time ago.

he's entitled to make a mistake every once in a while. >> reporter: trump making clear he'll be the attack dog if pence prefers to stay away from insults. >> she's crooked hillary. he shouldn't do it. it's different for him. he's not that kind of a person. we're different people. >> donald trump, this good man, i believe will be a great president of the united states. >> i love what he just said. >> reporter: true to form, trump concluding his vp rollout focusing on himself. >> i won in a landslide. this wasn't close. >> reporter: before introducing pence and leaving him on stage alone. this week's convention lineup has many republicans staying away. there will be two soap opera stars and five trumps. besides the candidate himself.

among those actors speaking today, scott baio and antonio stefan jr. and mike flynn once considered a vp pick with trump. and headliner, mill ana trump. >> we began by asking about that "60 minutes" interview last night and all the things trump and pence disagreed on. >> they don't disagree on all of those issues. first of all, i remember when ronald reagan picked george bush and that relationship ended up with two presidents. more fundamentally as far as governor pence and donald trump are concerned, on a number of issues it's margins. it's not disagreement on issues. >> donald trump says he was against the war in iraq from the very beginning.

governor pence voted for that war. >> the real problem is when obama became president and obama and clinton withdrew troops without plan for iraq which allowed for isis to grow. that's the fundamental problem in iraq and middle east right now and destabilizing everything and that's attributed to clinton's years as secretary of state and obama's presidency. >> can we talk about the process itself? a lot watched the process of picking the vice president. it's the first presidential level decision making process. there are multiple reports that donald trump wavered until the last minute hoping to have chance to pick someone else. >> that's because nobody wants to believe donald trump when donald trump does something. i was the one he was talking to. i know what was going on. he picked governor pence out of a process because he thought his record as governor was the record he needed in washington. >> pence says he got the call from trump to be his vp

wednesday night. on thursday night, donald trump called into tv shows, cable shows, said i haven't made a final decision and he was also reportedly calling the other contenders saying i haven't made a decision. >> donald trump called saying that because he hadn't announced his final decision yet. >> was that untruthful? it wasn't a true statement? >> the only thing going on thursday night was he was so upset by what happened in nice and carnage that he saw on tv, that he called me and said we cannot announce our vice president tomorrow. this is not appropriate. >> he did announce him at 11:00 a.m. via twitter. >> talking about the event that we were going to do -- a formal event announcing him. so the only conversations that were going on were between he and i in between an event he was doing in california to get on a plane to fly back and the conversation totally focused on how do we move from friday to saturday. that's it. >> big victory for this campaign over the last couple of days. the rules committee basically shut down this vote your

conscience movement to delegates cannot abandon trump on the floor of the convention. doesn't mean they can't make a lot of noise in the streets of cleveland. you have that in optics and you have key republicans who are simply not going to show up. most notably the sitting republican host governor of ohio, john kasich. how do you deal with those optics coming out of cleveland? >> first of all, you identify it correctly. few delegates in the convention or part of the never trump movement. it's very small. they were elected for other candidates and their passion hasn't left them yet. most delegates in the hall will be for donald trump and you'll see that. the people who are outside of the hall, those are paid people for the most part. this is not spontaneous volunteers coming here to hang out in cleveland. many are being paid. they're here to make mischief. that's true at the democratic convention, too. i'll be surprised if it has any impact at all. as far as people not at the convention, more people are at the convention. there were 16 candidates running. most of them will have a

presence at this convention including all of the finalists except for kasich who frankly was invited to participate. i can't answer it. makes no sense. embarrassing his state frankly. if the party is going to be unified, we'll come out of the convention a strong team. selection of mike pence has brought the party together. we're going to come out of the convention ahead in the polls. >> good to have you with us in cleveland. good luck this week. thank you. take care. >> our conversation a bit earlier. let's bring in two people. chuck todd on my right. nicole wallace on the left. chuck, let me start with you. let's set the table for this convention. a few big moments in a presidential campaign. the convention is one. do you have high hopes? >> i'm interested to see. look, this is a jittery nation, jittery party. trump has two opportunities and two charges.

opportunity is this is four days to reassure the country that he can be this guy. all this uncertainty that's out there, you're unsettled and feeling insecure, this is his opportunity to do that. the other thing he's got to do is reassure republicans he can win. i can't tell you how many professional republicans in town that are depressed and think it's over. he's got work to do just to make them come out of this going, oh, the party can win. >> let's talk about the kinds of things we'll hear from the podium over the next four days in the wake of shooting of police officers in baton rouge and dallas. the president spoke out and said we have to turn down the inflammatory rhetoric. in the same time period you have donald trump calling the president clueless and saying the nation is a divided crime scene. will we hear more of that in the convention hall behind us? >> we will. i don't think trump will go far to soothe the jittery nation but a chance to bring out that jittery party. the decision of pence really

does send a signal he was acutely aware of the need to signal that he's a republican. jeb bush did an interview last week where he said the conservative movement is dead. donald trump is trying to breathe life in it and reassure the people gathered in cleveland this week. >> you mentioned governor pence. on substance, a choice that republicans are happy with. in terms of process and the rollout, the reports that trump was vacillating until the end and then the bizarre speech and rollout on saturday, what do you make of it? >> we're going to say this a lot. missed opportunity. it's the nicest way to put it. how did they blow this? this is not a hard thing to blow and they have totally blown it. i'm still just stunned that they have yet to campaign together. this is crazy. >> do you want to defend them? >> the interview last night was uncomfortable to watch in a modern age. the dynamic between them is

lacking because there is no dynamic between them yet. they barely know each other. i was asked to give a grade last night. a t for trump-like. i guess this is how trump rolls. it's chaos. it's mayhem. we disagree but i think this convention will help trump. i think he'll come out of this ahead or even in the polls. >> a boost in the polls? >> i just think it's impossible to get a bump out of conventions anymore when you have them back to back. there's no time -- even if it's a great convention for him, democrats immediately start there. i think it mutes it. i think there's no movement after this. >> you wouldn't give it a t for trump? >> i'll give it a t for trump. vp rollout any hint of how this is going to go, the republican jitters may be worse. >> let's not prejudge.

again. as the city mourns its fallen officers, investigators search the gunman's home in kansas city, missouri, to try to find any information that might shed light on a motive. officers killed range in age from 32 to 45 years old. one sheriff's deputy this morning is in critical condition after being shot in the head and torso. the chaos erupted just before 9:00 a.m. sunday when someone called 911 to say a man dressed in black fatigues carrying a rifle. the gunman identified as gavin long. he was a marine sergeant once deployed to iraq for six months and on a website where he calls himself cosmo, he describes himself as a freedom strategist, a mental game coach and a nutritionalist. two weeks ago on a video he advocated a violent response. >> 100% of revolutions, of victims fighting their

something similar could happen here. the police chief here in cleveland said they've included blocking key roads like this one. that's what these huge trucks are doing here. very little will be able to drive through when protests occur and thousands are on the street. the other concern that police have are that people will come here carrying their guns. there's a long list of banned items but because of ohio law, they are allowed to bring guns. you have the head of the police union yesterday calling on governor john kasich to declare a state of emergency to suspend that law but the governor says that's beyond his authority. now, the other factor you're going to deal with today when these protests really begin in earnest is going to be the weather. this morning you had these severe thunderstorms coming in. there are more forecast for today. you're going to have thousands of people out here both pro-trump and anti-trump and law

enforcement knows one of the best ways for crowd control is with a little bad weather. back to you. >> stephanie, thank you very much. frank jackson is the mayor of cleveland. nice to see you. good morning. >> good morning. >> i want to talk about the readiness especially of the police force here. we know that in the wake of the police shootings down in dallas the open carry laws created some confusion. you have similar laws here. are you worried about it? should that law be suspended temporarily? >> if you ask my preference, of course. that's the law of the land. we'll enforce the law. as my police chief tells me, there's also a condition and responsibility to those who are engaged in open carry. we enforce that side also. >> obviously it is within an individual's right here in ohio to carry a weapon if he or she is licensed. are you or your police chief making a request, folks, if you wouldn't mind leave your weapons at home, it would make things

f more clear for officers trying to monitor the protests. >> it's been very clear. we haven't done it specifically. as know, those who are intent on making their point around open carry will make that point regardless of what we say and we recognize that. just yesterday we had a small protest with open carry. nothing happened as a result of that. so we're prepared for it. we've done everything that we could and should do and so now it's about execution, implementation. >> it does seem ironic, mr. mayor, some of the things you can't have around that convention center, a water gun, umbrella with a metal tip, tennis balls, mace, canned goods, glassed bottles. one thing you can have is a gun. >> it's a contradiction, that's right. >> before we had what happened in orlando, in nice, in baton rouge, in dallas, it was a

security challenge. have you made adjustments to your security in light of what we've seen recently? >> that's a better question for my police chief. he has briefed me and what he has said is as we have prepared for things, that we tweak those just like you saw the snowplow trucks. we know that in one city where they drove into a group of people so they made some adjustments and tweaks. of course they don't tell me everything and won't tell you anything. >> you also want to walk a line. you're the mayor of a great city of cleveland, ohio. you want this place to be safe for the convention but you don't want the image people take away on television that this is an armed fortress. >> it's a challenge. we knew when we asked for a convention that we would have these challenges. of course these challenges get magnified when there are external things that happen, but

builds on the trump slogan of make america great again. >> the theme for tonight is make america safe again. focus on national security and immigration. but the headliner tonight will be someone with a more personal connection to donald trump. his wife, melania. >> for more on that, let's go to nbc's hallie jackson. already inside the arena coping it out. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah and matt. new this morning, we're learning that donald trump himself will be here at the convention site. unusual for a candidate. trump wants to be here to support his wife melania when she takes that stage. the biggest turn on the national political stage. she's a former model and met her husband at a party. here's five things you may not have known. the spotlight almost always on her husband but tonight it's melania's turn. >> he would be the best president. >> reporter: a rare presence on the campaign trail, still

jackson, matthew gerald and brad garafola. the gunman identified as gavin long shot dead by police. police say the former marine wore black fatigues and was armed with a rifle. sunday was long's 29th birthday. overnight investigators swarmed his home in kansas city, missouri. some federal law enforcement officials say they are looking at whether he was associated in the past with a sovereign citizen movement, an extremist group that holds anti-government beliefs. >> we want to make sure he wasn't working with anybody else and nobody else is involved. >> reporter: on july 8th, long posted this message on his youtube page. >> i'm the alpha made. i stand up and stand firm and stand for mine until the end. until the last day in this flesh. i'm not the flesh. i'm not the body. i have a body. >> reporter: late sunday president obama urged americans to avoid hateful rhetoric.

>> everyone right now focus on words and actions that can unite this country rather than divide it further. >> reporter: the latest attack on police officers comes less than two weeks after the police shooting death of alton sterling, which thrust baton rouge into a national conversation about the use of police force. days later, five officers were shot and killed in dallas and in the days since threats have reportedly been made against police in at least seven states. baton rouge now the latest city mourning its police officers. and again investigators are still trying to pinpoint an exact motive and this morning a sheriff's deputy remains in critical condition after being shot in the head and torso. two other officers are recovering from nonlife threatening injuries. >> gabe gutierrez in baton rouge. thank you. >> that attack further heightening the focus on security here at the rnc in cleveland. what's being done to control

crowds and manage demonstrations? peter alexander is here with more on that angle of the story. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we're inside the home of the cleveland cavaliers and we can final say it's game time. donald trump himself who doesn't speak until thursday of this week revealing he'll be in cleveland when his wife melania speaks tonight as republicans get ready to kick off the party's pageant. this morning all eyes on cleveland as delegates and party officials arrive. >> this is a great time for cleveland and northeast ohio to shine. >> reporter: in the wake of the terror attack in nice and police officer shootings in baton rouge and dallas, security is very tight. more than 400 additional officers have been sworn in and trained to spot any potential threat. >> during the planning process for rnc, we planned for anything and everything that can happen. >> reporter: on sunday, the rnc unveiled its program of

speakers. tonight's focus, make america safe again. but after a nasty primary, the republican convention's main focus is on party unity. >> we have five days to bring everybody together, educate everybody, come out of this thing very strong. >> reporter: outside of the convention all it's all things trump. inside, 150,000 balloons are waiting to be dropped with republican heavyweights including paul ryan rehearsing speeches. for the next week, cleveland will be at the center of american politics. >> we're excited that cleveland has this opportunity to be in the spotlight. trump is the nominee. he's got the delegates. i think republican party will come together and support the ticket. >> reporter: there are protests and demonstrations planned outside all week. security as we noted will be

isis or links to any terror network. sheinelle? >> thank you. turkey is demanding that the count country needs to -- thousands of supporters have been detained including 100 generals and admirals. four people charged with helping a florida murder suspect escape from custody. he's still on the loose and police say he may now have a weapon. he was seen on camera running from a ft. lauderdale courthouse friday during a hearing. investigators say two of his alleged accomplices were in the courtroom and signaled the prisoner when his getaway car arrived and phoned the driver and partner to let them know the fugitive was on his way out. two people who heard a puppy crying inside a storm drain had

a lot with the mayor and security in the wake of what we expect to be wide scale protests here in the streets of cleveland. i want your take on what is our responsibility as the people covering this convention and covering these protests to make sure we get it right? >> i think be even handed is the big issue. in '68 it was an emotional time because kids captured a lot of people. when you look back on it, the kids did a lot of things that were out of line. >> there was no social media and there weren't images that could be flashed immediately. >> there are -- we're going to do a story this week on social media. it has taken a very prominent place underappreciated by mainstream media and impact of social media on voters and moved a lot of what donald trump has realized here. we do our job. people will look in on us and we have to tell story best we can about what is going on and

motivation is and how police are responding to it. there were no preparations in '68 for this thing. they had a line of police officers outside. they didn't have long lines and credentials and everything. it could be a pivotal moment. >> you mentioned how donald trump is redefining the republican party and his supporters would say he's moving it closer to where the base of the party is where people are opposed to establishment folks that may not come to this convention. >> he's moving it to a piece of where the party is. the fact is we see in the polls, women and hispanic are not as inclined to them as white working class males and that will be the test. if he's successful in the fall, he'll have a hold on the party. if not, they'll come back and say we want our party back. we'll see.

here. >> let's show you what's going on. this heat is going to be very dangerous as we get into latter part of the week. upwards of 133 million people expecting heat indices of more than 100 degrees. it feels well over 100 from tampa all of the way out to st. louis and back out to san antonio. tomorrow, more of the same. that heat really centered in the midsection of the country and as we get toward the end of the week, it just gets worse. we're looking for extreme high temperatures combined with relative humidity. air temperatures will be over 100 through a wide swath and as you move to the east, we're going to look at again temperatures that will feel like it's well over 105 degrees with actual air temperatures close to 100. this is very, very dangerous. that's wha good morning. i'm meteorologist erika martin. we have a first alert heat hazard in philadelphia, the p.a. suburbs, new jersey and delaware until the evening hours.

sandwich. norman lear is called the most prolific producer of the small screen dominating television in the 1970s with ground breaking hits like "all in the family," "sanford and sons" and "the jeffersons." lear says he still has a few things left to say. when you look at the body of your work, what are you most proud of? >> often i hear my dad and how he laughed. he had a touch of argentinean in him. we laughed together. as human beings we're versions of one another. >> your shows delved into race. why have we not progressed? >> we don't have leadership that gets us into the proper conversations. >> my daughter is married to the

white guy over here. >> could you make "all in the family" today? >> i think given the amount of cable networks, yes. could i for the four networks as we know them? i don't think so. >> when you look at what's been happening in this country and especially in the last two weeks, if you were on the air today with a sitcom, would you address these issues? >> absolutely. i think they should be addressed. absolutely. it should be a national conversation. what the hell is going on? the importance of sharing what is common to us in our own humanity. every version of it. >> ladies and gentlemen, norman lear. >> lear's name is back on the screen in a new documentary based on his life and career set to be released nationwide later this month. >> my bumper sticker has read for some years just another version of you. that's where they got the title.

we're back at 8:40 with our brand new series "her two cents." all about women and our relationship with money. >> you're one of the girls. this morning top five fears. jean chatzky, good morning. money is one of those things we as women -- i'm guilt of this, too -- don't love discussing. >> two-thirds of the women and there were 2,000 of them who answered our survey said we don't talk about this. we either don't like to do it or

we simply don't do it, wihich i one of the big reasons i launched my new podcast called her money. it's a continuing conversation weekly on itunes so i hope people will subscribe. >> number one fear is we worry we'll run out of money as we get older. >> there's a reason for this. the life span of women is going up and up. women outlive men by seven years. that means 90% of us will be alone at some point in our life. the thing you have to do sooner rather than later is look at your numbers. are you on track to have ten times your income put away for retirement before you retire? >> ten times? >> ten times. if you're not, right size your life now. look at housing, transportation, other big expenses and start to shrink them. >> another big fear is losing a spouse. how do you start that conversation now if you're not aware of your own family's

finances. >> sit down with your spouse and say i need to know. chances are i'm going to outlive you. we need to talk about who the important people are in our financial life, where the money is held and if you're the person paying all of the bills, i want to sit down with you and do it with you at least a couple times a year. if what you're fearful of is not information but in fact the income, it would be nice to go out and earn extra money but that takes time. look at the amount of life insurance that you're carrying. term life insurance is reasonable. cover eight to ten times your income and cost of paying off the mortgage and college. >> tough conversation. you have to have it. number three surprised me, it was becoming a bag lady. >> it's a real fear. it comes from a place of seeing another woman in your life struggle. a mother, an aunt, an older friend. you have to separate what's going on in your head from reality of your financial life. look at your own data points.

if you're putting away 10% to 15% of your retirement, paying down your credit card bills, if you have health insurance, you're doing okay and should be able to dial back that fear. >> fear number four, losing your job. >> 2008 was not so long ago. many of us know people who came through the recession and lost jobs and had trouble getting back on your feet. you have to have a reality check about how you're doing at work right now which means looking at your prior reviews and being honest about it. >> you can't really control it. sometimes you're totally blind-sided. >> i think we always need to look for plan b. >> prepare for what if i lose my job. >> you want to make sure you're linkedin profile is always up to date and resume is up to date and if you're not in habit of networking, once a week out for coffee. >> one thing so many people i know, you're in credit card debt. am i ever going to get out from

at the republican national convention which is where tamron hall is right now. what's going on? >> good to see you. i know that you have been keeping track of all of the events out here and this morning is our first full day of the republican national convention. i walked the streets this morning. i arrived last week at the end of the week. you see the security presence. obviously it's rather intense given what happened in baton rouge over the weekend. it was expected to be tight security but things have taken on a new tone and new level. the protest route is not very far from where we are. it's about five miles. they expect some 11,000 protesters. 5,500 police officers and law enforcement officers assigned here. i see two just to my right here. every inch that you walk you see a great security presence. yesterday's conversation was surrounding the state's open carry law. the governor decided to deny the police union's request to

suspend open carry. that seems to be the larger tone here, larger question about this open carry. is it the right thing when you have so many people here and with everything that's happening in the news, the governor says he does not have the authority to suspend that open carry so by contrast, you can have an umbrella without a metal tip but you can openly carry a long rifle. so this is some of the contrast and contradictions of what's happening. overall, this is supposed to be a celebration for the republican party as donald trump becomes the official nominee for the party. the theme tonight is make america safe again. the headliners will include melania trump, donald trump's wife, michael flynn. if you remember, he was on the short list of potential vp pi s

picks. that's the big list tonight. headline conversation make america safe again. overall it's been very pleasant. there's a mix of celebration but concerns and reality of what's happening in our country. it should be an incredible three days for the city of cleveland. it's proven to be a fantastic host in addition to winning the basketball championship. i'm going to be run of town if i said that. i want cleveland browns to win the super bowl. i'm a texas cowboys fan until i die. it's a great city. these people here have been phenomenal here. especially the law enforcement as it's been a tremendously painful few weeks for them. >> it certainly has. watching the "today" show this morning, you can see the tone there sounds like a lot of festivities going on. we'll check in with al in cleveland for a look at the weather there. >> by the way, tamron, police told me that actually they're here to keep an eye on you because they heard about you.
