the rain around. these are severe thunderstorms across parts of the area right now so the picture we just showed you, that's wilmington. we also have storms moving into wilmington and the line extends farther down to washington. the storms right through philadelphia. ground stop at the airport down to washington. there's a ground stop and up through new york and parts of boston and the ground stop as well. we'll zoom in here. we have a severe thunderstorm warning for philadelphia until 4:30. this is going to move into new jersey as well. it's our new jersey neighborhoods as well that are involved in a severe thunderstorm warning, so very high winds near 60 miles an hour or we could even see some higher wind gusts. very heavy rain, a lot of lightning right through the philadelphia area. the major interstates, 95. this is going to be crossing into new jersey soon, so if you're in cherry hill you can expect this in gloucester 410, washington township 4:32 and berlin about 4:42. the line is again extending down towards wilmington.

a lot of heavy rain and lightning and thunderstorm activity. that continues down towards washington, so if you're in gloucester, again, 4:26 washington and near 430 and williamstown expect it by 4:55 so this line of storms is going to be crossing the major interstates up through philadelphia and even extending through parts of trenton and mercy county. that's going to slide into new jersey and delaware. we'll talk more about this and what you can expect for the rest of the evening coming up. we have our newest meteorologist that we want to welcome to the nbc 10 weather team. she has a closer check on the heat in the area. >> thank you. i'm getting a hot and wet welcome here. you can see the change from where the rain has already moved through. tracking the temperature 74 in allentown and philadelphia and 87 degrees, feels-like temperatures. what it feels like based on the fact that we have the high humidity. check out dover, 107 is what it feels like. while temperatures will dip a tad, we're talking a trend that

brings back the heat so today we've officially hit a high of 95 degrees. that's the fifth day in a row that we've seen temperatures in the 90s. going to have a little break here and drop things down your tuesday and wednesday into the upper 80s and then we bring back the 90s thursday and friday and looks like we could potentially be feeling 100 or near 100 on saturday and sheena will have more on that coming up. >> let's get back to the coverage of our republican national convention in cleveland. this is as you're about to see here a live look where it's day one and donald trump is showing the world what to expect the unexpected. >> musical performances that are continuing throughout the day. jim rosenfield is anchoring the coverage live in cleveland and joins us now with all of today's coverage. >> reporter: right now i want to share with you why i'm talking loudly over music. we're sort inform between the official business of the convention and kind of entertains the delegates as they wait for speaker after speaker. they have been going over some

rules issues and adopting things from commit. a little bit of drama. we'll get into that about the anti-trump effort. meantime, what about the new polls that are out, a new monmouth university poll showing this race is tightening up even further with donald trump closing in on hillary clinton. it finds that clinton now holds just a three-point lead over her republican rival. down from a six-point lead in the same poll last month. now this, convention right here in cleveland, of course, gives donald trump high profile event to try to tighten that lead furthermore. the convention all getting under way officially at 1:00 this afternoon. a few hours ago and everyone is wondering just what's in store here? >> welcome to the 2016 republican national convention. >> reporter: and with that the republican national convention officially kicked off this afternoon. usually a week long celebration of the presumptive nominee. >> whoever receives those 1,237 votes will be our nominee, and

we will be backing that person. >> reporter: but this year there's a divide. outside the quicken loans arena, protesters are already making their voices heard. inside the arena anti-trump delegates are expected to try one last time to get rid of trump by forcing a roll call vote. once that's over, today's theme will be make america safe again. >> very excited. very interested in what everybody has to say, especially what's been going hon in this country alone with all the gun violence. >> reporter: the speakers focusing on terror, immigration and benghazi, and trump himself expectsed to make a cameo sometime today. most nominees aren't seen until thursday. and right now the focus is on perhaps the mundane but really not. it is very important as far as the anti-trump forces are concerned the rules here and what takes place down here on the floor. there's been a lot of action

behind the scenes. will it spill out on to the convention floor? for that i want to bring in our nbc 10 colleague who has been covering the delegates and what's going on behind the scenes with the rules. lauren? >> reporter: yeah, jim. we've been watching the convention floor and the delegates known as unbound today but they were really dealt another blow by the rules committee in this final effort to derail a trump nomination. >> this convention will come to order. >> reporter: while the rnc opened with formality on the convention floor, behind the scenes here a frantic last-minute effort to change the way things work here. >> we're trying to find the convention secretary. i mean, we have the signatures from 11 states to force a roll call vote. she has suddenly disappeared and don't know where she is. >> reporter: the idea, change the rules, let the delegates vote the way they want,

delegates who come in here bound to support a candidate because of the primary vote. >> do you think there's any way that you can stop donald trump from being nominated? >> there's always a chance, but it's important to know that this isn't all about donald trump. what's happened with the republican party and the draconian attempt to crush the delegates can't stand. >> reporter: middleton's dealt got sat on the rules committee and spoke to them just after they took the vote. >> my view is as a lawyer and sports fans you don't change the rules in the middle of the game and while donald trump wasn't my first pick, not my last choice, but he was the choice of more than anybody else by an overwhelming number. >> reporter: delegates themselves have been getting lobbied to vote down the rules. montgomery county's tom ellis. >> a lot of letters, a lot of phone calls. >> reporter: but he's not convinced. >> originally when i ran i thought it would be fun to have a convention that's brokered, but now we're down to two candidates. we have hillary on the democratic side and we've got donald on the republican side so it's time to move on and have that battle.

>> reporter: and you may remember that pennsylvania has sort of an unusual situation. most of the delegates from pennsylvania actually come in being able to vote for whoever they want but that is not the case in new jersey and delaware, so this really would have affected them. we're going to stay on top of that, and we'll be back at 5:00 with more on the rnc and a look at the security here. for now live in cleveland, lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. jim, back to you. >> reporter: lauren, stay glued to your phone for any updates and then can you text me. we'll stay in touch here as well up here in our suite. you're down here on the floor. really appreciate you staying on top of that effort to see what the anti-trump forces are up to. as you mentioned, security is a big concern here in this week. officials here address the that. cleveland's mayor and police chief spoke and said so far no major issues. no real threats. security planners and the police union here have been trying to

on our nbc 10 app. lo now to breaking new details to the police ambush in baton rouge that left three officers dead. in a news conference that wrapped up just a few minutes ago authorities described what happened as an assassination. nbc 10 has this report live from studio. denise, what have you learned? >> reporter: keith, the gunman oyvind as gavin long was looking for locations to specifically target law enforcement. he was armed with two rifles and a handgun. they say the most compelling evidence is a video that shows the former marine calculated in his actions. they say he snuck up behind police officers and shot them at close range. they believe long would have headed to police headquarters not far away to take more lives had a w swath s.w.a.t. officer shot and killed him first. one of the fallen officers was

quoted this afternoon in making a plea for peace. >> please don't let hate affect your heart this. city must and will get better. >> reporter: a senior law enforcement official tells nbc news long's interest in the sovereign citizen movement does not appear have played a significant role in this attack. right now investigators are looking into his online activity to better understand his motive. >> 100% of revolutions, of victims fighting their oppressors, have been successful through fighting back, through bloodshed. >> reporter: the gunman posted this video on youtube back on july 8th, and while he talks about police, it's not clear if the post is related to this weekend's attack. the victims of the attack have been identified as officer matthew gerald who is on the left,er montrell jackson who you see on the right and sheriff's deputy brad galofolla pictured

in the middle. three other members of law enforcement were hurt and the we're told one deputy is still fighting for his life. we will continue to bring you updates as we get them. keith? >> right now, as can you imagine. police officers are out doing their jobs under a whole lot of pressure. >> police chiefs say they have never seen a climate like this before with no margin for error and officers realizing ones that want to talk to them. a look now at what police are going through. >> they got a hard jab. >> reporter: jameel richardson says it's awful what happened in baton rouge and sees tensions reaching a boiling point, even in his own family in philadelphia there are both concerns about unfair policing and fears for a relative who is an officer. >> he tells me every day, it's tough. >> reporter: upper darby superintendent mike chitwood has worked in policing for 52 years, and he says he's never seen assaults on police like this before. they are true terrorists.

there is no call for that. there's no rhyme or reason. >> reporter: and he's also seeing more support and so are other departments. in camden county, gloucester officer held coffee with the cops and an outreach program. >> we have to build bridges and bonds and take other people's concerns into consideration. >> reporter: attacks on police mean changes in procedures. philadelphia officers again ride two to a car and in upper darby chitwood is asking his team for extra awareness. it's a new norm and the new norm is killing police officers. that's tragic. >> reporter: in upper darby, drew smirkts nbc 10 news. >> new at 4:00, authorities say a love triangle is likely to blame for the execution-style shooting of a man last week. it's the first murder in the jamison section in three decades. police are receiving for 33-year-old jeffrey gould of bensalem. authorities have charged him in

the murder of edward dubinsky who was found shot to death on the front porch of his home thursday morning. police say an investigation into the murder revealed the two men had been involved with the same woman but it's not clear exactly what let to that shooting. >> nothing specific or dramatic that we're aware of. i think there's a certain action of communication and friction back and forth and no explosive event that we're aware of. >> police are also looking for the woman in this love triangle identified as zannatul naim. she has not been charged. police believe gould is now in north carolina. police in delaware county are asking for your help in tracking down the man seen in this surveillance video. he's wanted for firing nearly 30 rounds at a man on kent road in upper derby. the man was hit nine times and is in extremely critical condition. he should be considered arm and

extremely dangerous. if you know who he is, call upper darby police. no charges will be fired against eagles wide receiver nelson aguilar following an assault at a strip class. the district attorney said there were insufficient evidence to warrant such charges. police received he was involved in an assault at the cheerleader's gentleman's club in south philadelphia. time is running out for workers at trump taj mahal to agree to a new contract. the current contract offer needs to be accepted at 5:00 p.m. tonight or it will be withdrawn forever. the offer includes restoration of contribution towards health benefits. it's been more than two weeks since the two sides held a negotiate session. >> the septa slowdown has entered another week. this morning septa added an adigtsal five cars released from the maryland-area regional commuter train service to help

with overcrowding. five more cars will be added later in the week. a newly adjusted regional rail schedule also went into effect today. septa has been dealing with crowding and delays since dozens of trains had to be pulled from service because of defective steel beams. >> a major step forward in a plan to compete community schools in fifrl yafrmt the mayor announced the first nine schools selected to participate. they are in north, northwest, south and southwest philadelphia. each will have a full-time coordinator who will work with parents, students, teachers and neighbors to identify their needs to include job training and expand ed neighborhood centers. >> it's a place where kids go and then they leave, but now it can be so much more. we can have evening programs where parents can come in and do resume wright. we can have maybe family dinners. things like that. >> hover the next five years the

city will invest nearly $40 million to transform 20 public schools into community cools. overseas in the aftermath of a failed military coup in that country that man is blaming the uprising on a pennsylvania cleric living in exile. turkey's president erdogan alleged that cleric fethullah gulen plotted the military coup is demanding the united states extradite him back to turk but he denies any involvement and has been living in monroe county for years sand a longtime critic of the turkish government. the cleric believes these accusations are police kay motivated. >> he's a man of peace and defended peace against terrorist groups like isis and condemned violence of all times throughout his life. for him to be associated with a coup is simply insulting. he said i have nothing to do with this. i categorically deny it.

>> sources close to gulen say at this point no formal extradition request has been made but they will fully cooperate with the u.s. government if that happens. >> well, there you see it, new video we're getting in now. thunderstorms moving across the area, and you can see the high winds here. this is in upper darby, the rain coming down in sheets and we do have a couple of severe thunderstorm warnings across the area right now. one through the philadelphia area and one in newcastle county so the line of storm that extends down into washington. we have a ground stop still at philly international. now, these storms are not moving too fast so i would not be surprise federal we had some localized brief street flooding, even creek flooding. we can't rule that out. severe thunderstorm warning through the philadelphia area that extends into some of our new jersey area. some parts of camden and gloucester county. heavy rain over 959 in south fill and that's going to

continue to move into south philly. waterford at 4:55. because this storm is so severe. heavy rain and a lot of lightning near 60 miles per hour and damaging wind and potentially hail across the area. the other severe thunderstorm warning that just got issued is through parts of newcastle and salem county in south jersey where a thunderstorm warning will go until 5:00 p.m. and look at all the lightning right around newcastle county near newark and wilmington. this one is moving mostly to the southeast. again, not a fast mover, right around 20 to 30 mean, i so we could be talking about some localized flooding in parts of newcastle county. glassboro 4:43 and williamstown 4:57 and deerfield 5:14 and pitsgrove right around 5:17. i mentioned that lightning. take a look at the number of strikes. okay 300 lightning strikes in this small area of newcastle

county alone in the past 15 minutes. this is one strong thunderstorm so, again, if you're in the path of any of these storms you want to get indoors and stay indoors until these storms pass but they are fairly slow movers and some localized flooding. so we'll go up the i-95 corridor and chester seeing the very heavy rain as well as west deptford and cherry hill and pal my raft. getting out of the heavy rain and it will continue to move into new jersey. floren seeing some heavy rain also and that extends into new jersey into parts of trenton. next tends up into new york. this is a long line of severe storms and with any severe storms like i mentioned, those are damaging winds and lightning, heavy rain and the potential for hail. we have the severe thunderstorm watch until 8:00 tonight so, again, we're going to keep our eye out until 8:00 with the potential for any strong to severe storms, so, again, if neuronew jersey and delaware, you're not seeing much but that

line is heading your way and as we go through tonight keep an eye out and here's future weather. as we go through the next few hours that line moves into delaware and new jersey and we'll still have storms around but it will be just be south and east of philadelphia. at that point we could have more pop up north and west and by 8:30 a lot will move out and the severe threat will be over and drying up as we go overnight tonight. take a look at temperatures of rain-cooled air in philadelphia. 77 degrees and allentown 75 and south jersey and delaware though still dealing with temperatures in the 90s. atlantic city 90 degrees and dover coming in at 94. we'll keep track the storms and take a look at more heat in the forecast coming up. >> take a look at that. don't like hearing about that. a newly confirmed caves zika in the u.s. has doctors completely mystified. >> next, the new twist in how the virus is transmitted and this. a rescue that took some serious

take a look at this. sparks flying as firefighters work to free two people stuck in a storm drain in phoenix overnight, and just as a man and woman were trying to save a dog when they went in and got stuck. they crawled for several miles before someone heard them screaming for help. no one was injured luckily, but they never found that dog. switching gears now. utah health officials say a man who died after being infected with the zika virus passed it to a care giver. >> and that's created a medical mystery about how it spread between them. the salt lake county health department says the two people did not have sexual contact and the type of mosquitos that spread the requires is not found in the high altitude area where they live. the man who died caught the virus while traveling abroad. >> hand now a look at the thunderstorms popping up. sheena? >> a line of very strong

nbc 10 first alert radar is tracking a double weather threat. not only is it hot outside,

we're also seeing severe thunderstorms move into the area. let's get a check of our neighborhood forecast with meteorologist sheena par convenient. >> sheena, where are the storms right now? >> severe storms moved through philadelphia and now they are making their way into new jersey. they are not fast movers so we have flood advisories up from northern delaware and through philadelphia and parts of new jersey counties. this has moved through south phillie and now it's mostly in new jersey, right across the river from philadelphia. severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30, so really just the next couple of minutes. either way it's still strong, still going to be providing 60-mile-an-hour winds. heavy wind, lightning and the potential for small hail. medford, for example, expect it by 4:39 and williamstown 4:54-2-and winslow 5:10 and hamilton by 5:19 and now we go had a little further south into

newcastle county and salem county. a lot of lightning here through newcastle county. this one is traveling cfl still not very fast around 20 miles an hour and expect some flooding. clayton expects it by 5:00 and pitsgrove by 520 and the lightning in this, seen an increase in lightning now. about 360 lightning strikes in the past 15 minutes and that's in newcastle county alone. newark up to wilmington you're about to see the heaviest of this in a minute right across 95 and the major interstates here so this severe thunderstorm warning will continue into parts of newcastle county and also salem county and this storm is also moving southeast and there you see the heavy rain and it will continue to move into new jersey across the expressway and eventually to the shore later on this evening. coming up a look at the timing of that and more heat in the forecast. that's straight ahead. >> thank. the nation focuses on the rnc and today is a big day for

the dnc that kicks off one day from today. a look now at how the city is getting ready for that. monique? >> hi. i'm here inside political fest where the finishing touches are being put on the fuselage of air force one or a replica of air force one which spent the day at both the wells fargo center and here in the convention center talking to a politician and the secret service. a replica of the oval office is taking shape inside the pennsylvania convention center. while contractors bring this exhibit to life security experts are fine-tuning their plan to keep the thousands who attend the city for the dnc safe. >> seven police officers have been gunned down across the country. how has that changed your plan for security at the dnc? >> well, what tragic incidents like that do is they reinforce

why we go through this very extensive planning process. we started planning for the dnc back in october. >> reporter: jim hen rift secretary of state adds they have closely monitored terrorist attacks in france like the driver of this truck swarming to hit people in the streets of nice. >> with regards to the truck, that's why you'll see the barricades and sand trucks. that's why we do what we do. >> reporter: henry also tells us security fencing will be in place by week's end outside the wells fargo center. next week air restrictions begin. while the democrats are in town, governor rendell estimates more than 100,000 people will tour political fest. here you'll see a replica of air force one, interactive trivia games and recordings of historic speeches. when asked about security measures the host committee chair admits nothing is 100% foolproof. >> someone willing to trade their life for someone else's, you can almost never prevent that in a free society, but do i

the republican national convention is under way in cleveland as the world watches to see what donald trump will do and what, if any, fireworks we can see. we could just be seeing some right about now >> nbc 10's jim rosenfield is in cleveland. what just happened? >> reporter: a vivid display of the disunity in factions of this republican party. i'm going to step out of this shot as you look down on the delegate floor. unbound delegate wanted a roll call vote here on the floor and at the moment of that decision the leadership revealed that three states that had been on board to hold that roll call vote had backed out suddenly and so there would be no roll call vote. this would be an attempt to allow delegates under the rules to not be bound to support the presumptive nominee. when that happened there were cheers and chants on both sides,

and now lauren mayk is telling me from down on the floor that she is seeing texts from delegates unbound, that movement to perhaps stage a walkout in protest. we haven't seen that happen yet. we'll keep an eye on it. now, there are many high-profile republicans who are not here to see this all unfolding and perhaps this is part of the reason why. i want to take a look at a graphic that's going to show you some of the big names that are not here at the rnc. ohio's own governor john kasich, the governor of the state hosting this convention. he is not setting foot here inside the q. also jeb bush who is also an opponent of donald trump. bush held a lot of personal feelings about the personal attacks he took from trump during the primary season and jeb's bother george w. bush is also not at this convention and let's take a look at some of pennsylvania's republicans who are not here as well. senator pat toomey, congressman ryan kastella and patrick me man and ryan fitzpatrick.

don't forget your seven-day forecast slight at the bottom of screen so you can see even more heat heading your way. severe thunderstorm warning for newcastle county and a lot of heavy rain right across i-95 just south of wilmington, than will be moving in. actually moving into delaware city at the mom and moving into salem by 4:55, upper pitsgrove by 5:19 and deerfield by 5:27. this storm has the potential to provide damaging winds, heavy rain and lightning and potentially hail. seeing flood advisories out for it because of the heavy rain and vote moving speed of it. so lightning strikes. 360 in the past 15 minutes. the worst part of the storm is right over delaware and newcastle county where the heaviest rain is right now and also newcastle county and kent county and marts of sussex county, we're looking at another line of thunderstorms moving in here and this one is coming in

from maryland. this line of storms will be moving into these areas. would i say within about 30 minutes we'll see the strong storms moving in so that severe thunderstorm warning for the rest of delaware goes until 5:15. middletown, expect it at 4:53 and smyrna by 5:05 and dover 5:22. so that's another round of strong storms with potentially damaging winds, heavy rain, localrized rain and creek flooding and that even extends up to the philadelphia area and mostly now into our new jersey neighborhoods. waterford is about to see heavy rain, tabernacle moving across the ac expressway. this is some heavy rain that has been leading to the potential for localized flooding, again, flooded roadways and also some flooded creeks, so, again, this is heavy rain across the area. it already moved through south philly but now we're seeing some of the heaviest in parts of new jersey so that's one area that we're watching right now and a lot of this heavy rain is going
