a grand old party in ohio. good evening. i'm jacqueline london. >>. >> i'm jim rosenfield reporting live from the national convention in cleveland. and tonight, donald trump, who has made a habit of bucking the trend, did so once again tonight, making an appearance on the first night of the republican convention here in cleveland. breaking protocol. >> the next first lady of the united states, my wife. an amazing mother, an incredible woman. melania trump. >> reporter: trump was there of course to introduce his wife as melania, as you just heard. she was often seen but not heard on the campaign trail. but tonight was her big night in the spotlight. take a listen to some of her remarks. >> his achievements speak for

themselves, and his performance throughout the primary campaign proved that he knows how to win. he also knows how to remain focused on improving our country, on keeping it safe and secure. he's tough when he has to be. but he's also kind and fair and caring. this kindness is not always noted. but it is there for all to see. that is one reason i fell in love with him to begin with. >> reporter: this is trump's comments echoing what each and every speaker before her had to say. >> y'all fired up? >> reporter: night one at the rnc, and the theme was evident from the start. make america safe again. >> it's time to make america

safe again. it's time to make america one again. one america! >> if you're a serviceman fighting overseas or a cop who is risking their lives to help keep us safe at home, donald trump will have your back. >> reporter: former gop hopeful and texas governor rick perry went one step further, to rally support for those who pay the ultimate price for our country. >> tonight our commitment is this. making america great again starts by taking care of our veterans. >> reporter: but the focus quickly turned to trump's opponent in november, hillary clinton, and her role in the 2012 benghazi attack. the crowd brought to tears when the mother of one of the americans killed took to the podium with some harsh words for the presumptive democratic nominee. >> for all of this grief, for all of the citizens, the tragedy benghazi has wrought upon america, i blame hillary

clinton. >> reporter: in fact, some dark themes, some dark rhetoric that we heard here on the floor tonight. my colleague, nbc 10's lauryn lake is down on the floor. what have they had to say tonight? >> reporter: you know, jim, these were some of the quietest moments i have heard yet at this convention. tonight was really the first chance for the campaign to set out a message for this convention. it was about both donald trump and hillary clinton. you know, it was very planned. it was very set out. but it held people's attention here. and for some it has special meaning. the signs waving across the arena spelled out the week's first theme, to make america safe again. but the cheers often fell to a hush tonight as stories of loss and war played out. >> benghazi's been a four-letter word. but it's not about politics.

>> reporter: watching tonight, bayville, new jersey delegate jim burns. >> i was a medic in vietnam. and just going through all that brought back a lot. >> reporter: memories came back in this cleveland arena. >> i remembered what a firefight was through the night. and people have to realize what it is. you have to put yourself in their shoes. >> reporter: he thinks about those serving today as the campaign kicks into gear. why do you think donald trump is the one to keep this country safe? >> i think hillary's failed us. you know? so i think donald trump will keep us a lot safer than what hillary did. >> reporter: so you blame hillary clinton for what happened there? >> i blame the whole government. >> reporter: jim mcilerney is from chester county and also a veteran. he says trump doesn't have to have military experience to take this on. >> i think he makes decisions and carries them out and implements them. >> reporter: a lot of supporters really believe that his business experience will translate. and that's what you heard there.

while all of this was going on down here, jim, i was also watching my phone, and i thought a press release is coming from the hillary clinton, already hitting back specifically on benghazi. live from cleveland, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. jim, back to you. >> all right, lauren. hillary clinton herself has been tweeting her reaction to this convention. she did make an appearance earlier today at the naacp convention, a convention which donald trump opted out of and has taken some criticism for that. clinton herself calling for the country to come together after that attack on police in baton rouge. >> and in times like these we need a president who can help pull us together, not split us apart. >> clinton reiterating her proposed reforms to the criminal

justice system. that includes national guidelines on the use of force by police, legislation to end racial profiling, and also funding for body cameras. back here in cleveland, as much as the republicans hope this convention will help unify the party, there was a bit of chaos down on the floor earlier today. we're going to show you that coming up a little bit later on. and you'll also hear from new jersey governor chris christie. i got his reaction to what happened here earlier today. for now i'm jim rosenfield live in cleveland. jacqueline, let's send it back to you. new at 11:00, police attacked in chester county and one officer sent to the hospital. the attack was caught on dash cam video. and it comes at a time when police are already on heightened alert. nbc 10's denise nakano reports from coatsville. >> reporter: police dash cam video shows a rock attack on a coatsville police officer. >> this was an unprovoked attack on law enforcement today.

>> reporter: as police are on heightened alert after deadly attacks on officers in dallas and baton rouge, seemingly out of nowhere a man standing on the street outside the coatsville library this afternoon appears to wind up and throw the rock into the front windshield of the officer's marked police car. >> you can see where that rock hit the windshield and shattered it. >> the officer gets out of the vehicle and he's basically being attacked. he's right there on him. he actually at one point picked the rock back up that he initially hit the police car with. >> reporter: the officer tried to use a taser but the police say the suspect 29-year-old eric watson blocked it by holding up a bag. the struggle on east lincoln highway blocks from the police station ended with watson's arrest. but not before another officer who arrived as backup broke his sternum. watson faces charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. he told a judge he was homeless, and investigators plan to look into his mental health background. in coatesville, chester county, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. happening now, a tribute to

the law enforcement officers whose lives were cut short during yesterday's ambush in baton rouge. here's a live look at the ben franklin bridge, which is lit up in blue to honor them tonight. this will remain through wednesday. and today authorities called what happened an assassination. they say the gunman, gavin long, was clearly targeting law enforcement. the former marine was carrying two rifles and a handgun as he snuck up behind three officers. he shot them at close range, killing them, then shot several others before a s.w.a.t. team killed him. investigators are now taking a closer look at the former marine's social media posts. in one recent youtube video he advocated violence following the police-involved shooting death of alton sterling in baton rouge. turning to our weather now, this afternoon's storms which turned deadly in north jersey. a woman was electrocuted when a live power line fell on her car during a storm.

witnesses say she was driving in fanwood, union county. she tried to avoid a fallen tree but some wires fell on her car. she died while trying to escape. the storms left some heavy damage in our area. above smith farms on north eagle farms in delaware county where the wind knocked a silo over. if you have the nbc 10 app you received severe weather alerts as the storms blew through. tonight our coverage begins with nbc 1-10's brandon hudson live in havertown. >> you can pick just about every street in havertown and you will see something like this. this tree fell down from one yard, landed into a neighbor's yard, knocked down a fence, knocked down power lines, and it just looks like a huge mess back there. looks like a jungle back there. pico is here. and at last check they have a little more than 4,000 customers without power tonight. we can also tell you that during our travels today we saw a number of people who wasted no

time cleaning up their damage. an interesting look at roof repairs from inside the house the crew was fixing. and quite a mess in one of the bedrooms. >> it's like holy god, what happened here? >> reporter: two hours after severe weather passed, roofing contractors began covering holes at this home in white hull township, lehigh county. sameera salien was inside when parts of the roof were blown away. >> the bay windows started shaking so bad. i ran downstairs. my mom's crying the roof is flying, there's a lot of stuff, debris is flying all over. >> reporter: more than an hour away in havertown, homeowners raced to clean up their lawns before the sun set. at the storm's peak more than 15,000 customers lost power. police surrounded some places with tape, including this one where a tree fell and took part of the ground with it. >> i haven't ever seen anything

like it, really, as far as that tree goes. thank god it didn't fall onto the house. >> reporter: at nearby swiss farms a team effort to pick up the pieces of a landmark ravaged by strong storms. a 40-year-old silo collapsed in roughly 20 seconds. >> we had another big lightning bolt and the wind was really picking up and we heard the building shook and we heard this big thud. >> and thank god, no car was in sight and no one got hurt. that's the most important thing. everything else can be repaired. >> reporter: you're getting another live look at some of the damage in this back yard. another tree toppled over, crashed into a fence. in another part of the yard. no one lives here. but this house is up for sale. so there's going to be a lot of cleanup by this realtor. as for swiss farms, the damage, theirs cost about $100,000. they do plan to rebuild that silo, and for some time tonight the haverford ymca opened its doors for people to use their shower and power and

that's due to the recent attacks on police. 45 states in fact have spent officers to cleveland to help. and they're walking in groups of six or eight to help each other out. and today the protests did not stop outside. they were also going on inside here on the floor of the republican national convention. delegates who were trying to stop the nomination of donald trump. nbc 10's lauren mayk was down on the floor when it all went down. here's her report. >> roll call vote! >> reporter: it was an eruption of chants, boos, and clashes on the floor of the convention. texas and wyoming called for a roll call vote on rules governing the rnc. whether the delegates should be unbound. free to vote for whoever they want regardless of what happened in the primary. but tit's not just about donald trump. maid the shouting we found out -- >> this is about the grassroots

having control of the party. >> reporter: as the chanting continues, take a look at pennsylvania. >> usa! >> reporter: chanting back. >> they don't have the number of states needed to go forward. so we should move on with the convention. >> usa! usa! nbc 10's lauren mayk reporting from the floor here at the rnc. tonight we caught up with new jersey governor chris christie just outside our broadcast position here. one of donald trump's of course biggest supporters. i asked him about this apparent infighting in the republican party. here's what he had to say to me. >> a small minority of people decided to make a spectacle of themselves. and that's fine. but it's all over and you're not going to hear any of that tonight. >> what does it speak to, though, in terms of party unity? is that real? is it here? >> it's absolutely real because what you're going to see is one candidate who gets the overwhelming nomination of the republican party, who won 38 states, and the people of our party throughout the states

across this country overwhelmingly voted for donald trump. believe me, i was in that race. i remember. that's what really matters. and some of the shenanigans here by professional politicians really don't make a whole bit of difference to people in the country. >> governor christie also blasted the former primary republican candidates who had failed to show up here at this convention, saying they broke their pledge that they signed with the party. jacqueline, another packed day coming up tomorrow. we'll have more about what's coming up on the agenda a little bit later in this newscast. for now back to you in philly. >> jim, we'll look forward to that. now let's turn it over to meteorologist sheena parveen and the stormy day we had. >> yes, we did, jacqueline. we had a lot of thunderstorms across the entire area. but now we're really clearing out. what we can expect as we go into tomorrow, less humidity both tomorrow and wednesday. so it's going to feel very comfortable. also don't forget your

seven-day's right at the bottom of your screen for you. wednesday's going to be the most comfortable day out of the week. and then we go into thursday and into the weekend and the 90s are going to come back for a while. along with the humidity. so more heat on the way with the humidity, and we're going to be dry no, rain relief. really once we get back into the 90s we don't have any big rain chances coming with it. tomorrow morning, though, it will be a little more comfortable. temperatures mid to low 70s by 8:30 in the morning. by lunchtime we'll be about in the mid to low 80s with lower humidity and dry across the area. so nice if you want to eat outside for the afternoon hours tomorrow for lunch possibly. across the area we're mostly dry but we do have some showers that have managed to pop up again. reports in lehigh valley, burks county and reading. parts of lancaster county seeing heavy rainfall. pottstown as well. allentown, heavy rain near richland across 476 here. we'll watch these showers closely. they don't look too organized. but if they hold together they could be moving into montgomery

and bucks county, possibly in the philadelphia area but that won't be for a little while longer. here's a look at the damage reports for today. a lot of wind damage reports around the washington area. delaware up through the lehigh valley. we saw our fair share of storm reports. so from newcastle county in delaware, up through the allentown area. even around philadelphia. 21 thunderstorm wind damage reports. we had a lot of severe storms roll through this afternoon. thankfully, though, they have cleared out for the most part except for the ones through the lehigh valley. we are watching those closely, though. tomorrow will be a dry day. temperatures mid up toer 80s. reading coming in 87 degrees mostly dry. eave shm township 88. looking at mostly sunny skies. you'll notice the humidity dropping through the day tomorrow. it's going to be a lot more comfortable. wednesday 88 degrees. but the humidity will be the lowest out of the week. on wednesday that's going to be the most comfortable day. we're back into the 90s thursday and friday with the humidity.
