right now. congressman chris collins from new york is speaking, but just moments ago alabama senator jeff sessions officially nominated donald trump. sessions the first sitting senator to support trump's candidacy, but today, especially early in the day, this was a day fueled by allegations of plagiarism. >> you work hard for what you want in life. >> reporter: you be the judge. did melania trump copy michelle obama's speech from 2008. >> that your word is your bond. >> that your word is your beyond. >> and you do what you say and keep your promise. >> that you do what you say you're going to do. >> that you treat people with respect. >> that you treat people with dignity and respect. >> reporter: today turned into damage control. governor christie says what's the big deal? >> could you make a case for plagiarism? >> not when 93% of the speech is

completely different. they expressed some common thoughts. >> reporter: last night's speech remains the talk of the town. trump's campaign chairman says everyone is blowing it out of proportion. >> the fact that there are things like care and respect and compassion, you know, those are not extraordinary words and certainly when you talk about family they're normal words. >> reporter: and the democrats say trump has some explaining to do. >> make no mistake, the clinton campaign isn't pressing this issue. what's very clear is that the media has seen extreme similarities between one person's delivered speech and melania's. >> reporter: this is not the first time we've heard about plagiarism accusations during a presidential election. in fact, vice president joe biden, you may remember this, he actually dropped out of the 1988 presidential race after it was revealed he plagiarized portions

of speeches, including some from rfk and a british politician. speaking of vice presidents, mike pence hopes to become the next vice president, of course, of the united states on the trump ticket. today indiana's governor tried to sort of help unite conservatives in cleveland with attacks on hillary clinton and president obama. >> agenda of barack obama and hillary clinton has weakened america's place in the world and stifled our nation's economy, and so we must decide here and now that hillary clinton will never become president of the united states of america. >> reporter: and governor pence will have his time in the spotlight right here below me on the podium tomorrow night. that's coming up tomorrow night. but right now lauren make is down on the convention floor amidst all these delegates. this has to be an exciting time

for those delegates. >> reporter: yeah, jim. this is one of the big moments of every convention. what happens is each state, somebody stands up and announces their delegate votes putting them towards the nomination of the eventual nominee. now, where we're standing right now is actually where some of that drama happened the other day. right in this area around these delegates here. and i'll tell you, jim, we could see that kind of thing again happen tonight. we are hearing that the same group that was behind that, they are also pushing for delegates to demand that they be able to cast their own vote, not just those large group votes with the states. let me show you something. nbc 10 has obtained this letter that was sent out to delegates this afternoon instructing them on how to do this. it tells them, quote, you can't control whether they steal your vote or not, but you do have it within your authority to demand that your ballot be cast.

we are going to be watching what happens. there are still divisions at this convention. there are still people who did not come to this convention, but there are also those i have spoken to them that have made this journey to supporting the man being nominated tonight, donald trump. inside the q in cleveland, cheers for donald trump, but not all the delegates here have been cheering for that long. >> i'm a very recent convert. >> reporter: how recent? >> this last weekend. >> reporter: pennsylvania national committeeman bob asher has been through two candidates. he started with marco rubio. >> that didn't work out. i thought governor kasich had the business experience that we needed, and we now have mr. trump, and i am a firm believer that we cannot tolerate four more years of the obama/clinton type of governance. >> reporter: then there's pennsylvania speaker mike turzaturzai

asked last july if there was anyone he wouldn't support. >> is donald trump a republican? like i can tell you right now i would not be for donald trump. >> reporter: i found him on the convention floor. i heard you at one point question whether donald trump is a republican. >> i did not know much about republican other than he was on television. i just didn't know, you know, what he was about. >> reporter: and turzai says trump won fair and square with an impressive showing in pennsylvania. are you comfortable with him as your nominee? >> without a doubt. listen, i supported senator rubio, but the people come together. >> reporter: and that was house speaker mike turzai who has gone on this journey to now be supporting donald trump. what is happening behind me is that roll call is going to be getting under way. we're going to be watching what happens, specifically now somebody from each state will stand up and go to the microphones over there. you see them under each of the signs. but we also don't know whether other folks are going to try to get to those microphones to

demand that their individual votes are cast. we will be watching this here on the convention floor. live in cleveland, i'm lauren make, nbc 10 news. jim, back to you. >> reporter: lauren, will that formal process be disrupted. keep an eye on it for us. governor chris christie will be one of the early speakers and earlier today i had a chance to ask nbc's political director chuck todd what we can expect from christie tonight. >> i think chris christie is going to give the speech that he believes -- first of all, it's the speech he would have given if he'd been the running mate, and i think it's the speech he's been wanting to give and to make the case to the republican party that he would have been a better prosecutor against hillary clinton than anybody else. this is going to be u.s. attorney chris christie tonight making a prosecutorial type of case against her. >> reporter: and the theme tonight again here in cleveland, make america work again.

hundreds of workers and their supporters demonstrated outside terminal a. they carried a sign that says respect black workers. the group included baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, and wheelchair attendants. they want a minimum wage of $15 per hour and to join a union. now to a wife murdered in south jersey and her husband is charged with the crime. police in pennsville arrested nitin singh who is accused of stabbing ceema singh to death in the kitchen with their kids asleep upstairs. skyforce 10 was over the house in pennsville as police continued to investigate that crime scene. a new push today to make roosevelt boulevard safer for drivers, bicyclists, and walkers. advocates introduced a bill that would add automated speed cameras on the busy northeast philadelphia road. the pilot program would automatically ticket drivers speeding on the boulevard, which is one of the most dangerous and deadly roads in the city. between 2011 and 2015 61 people

lost their lives in crashes on the road. new details now about the septa slowdown. officials announced plans to entirely replace each of the more than 400 faulty steel beams on its train cars. septa's general manager says they hope to begin production by august. septa also sent officials to boston to ask about borrowing train cars from that city to help during the fix. new at 6:00, the first of the new targets in center city opens tomorrow. within the last hour, philadelphia mayor jim kenney took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony. the store is located at 11th and chestnut in washington square. another target opens in a few months about seven blocks away. new at 6:00, the possible name change for north wildwood. today the mayor received a petition asking the city to change its name back to the original name. it was changed to north wildwood back in 1906.

the dnc isn't just for the delegates. kids can also take some time to enjoy themselves. the day of play extravaganza takes place on july 27th and it's free of charge. new at 6:00, philadelphia's restaurant scene is preparing for the democratic national convention. the tens of thousands of visitors will put the city's growing reputation as a food lovers paradise on a worldwide stage. nbc 10's george spencer is live tonight in center city, and, george, restaurant owners really have started their push.

>> reporter: that's right. on the streets and on social media. the convention itself of course in south philadelphia, about 3 1/2 miles down broad street, but many of the visitors will be staying and eating around here making next week a perfect chance to put that restaurant scene on a stage in front of tastemakers and a national audience. the flash and sizzle of the grill at smoking betty's restaurant about to get even hotter next week. for you guys, this is showtime, right? >> absolutely. >> the owner says her comfort food spot is planning meal and drink specials and special hours, later than usual to entice its share of the 50,000 convention delegates, media, and guests. >> i understand the convention itself is going to be in south philly and as they come back up to their room, if they didn't get a chance to eat during the day, we're going to someday open and feed them. >> reporter: smoking betty's is not alone. dnc organizers say philly's

blossoming restaurant scene will be on full display. the crowd itself about the size of other large conventions held on a regular basis, but the worldwide attention this major political spectacle brings is unmatched. >> we've seen a huge excitement level from a lot of different members of the restaurant community. >> reporter: kevin washo, executive director of the host committee, tells us locals will not feel crowded out by the event. they may enjoy the buzz right alongside visitors searching for specials with the hash tag dnc deals. real restaurant and bar specials in real time. >> center city is why i think they chose philadelphia. if you're a couple in ardmore and you want to come down and have some dinner, you should come down. >> reporter: smoking betty's is extending its usual 11:00 p.m. closing time to 1:00 a.m. just one example of the type of

going to stay pretty dry for a pretty long while. the seven-day, you'll see the 90s coming back with humidity. but not today. for now we have a north and northwest wind across the area. a little bit breezy but that's really what's bringing in the drier air. that's what's lowering the humidity and tomorrow will be the same way. temperatures have been in the 80s today. 86 degrees through the philadelphia area. some of our philadelphia neighborhoods coming in 85 degrees parkside. 85 society hill. if you're in bustleton, temperature there 84 degrees. and it will be really comfortable tomorrow morning. morning lows will be at about the mid-60s across most of the area. so feeling comfortable when you wake up. it's going to stay dry through the day. storms to the south. they're not going to be moving in anytime soon. we'll stay dry from now through the weekend. take a look at future weather. look at the hot and humid air. it's not going to be here tomorrow but it will be here on thursday, especially friday and especially saturday and sunday. so we are looking at a hot and humid forecast as we end out the week and go into the weekend.

next three days for philadelphia, 87 tomorrow. low humidity. thursday 92. humidity goes up. friday 96 and that humidity is still going to be here. 86 tomorrow for our pennsylvania suburbs, mostly sunny. thursday, 91. 95 degrees on friday. lehigh valley mid-80s after a cool start. low humidity tomorrow, very comfortable day. thursday 90. more humidity. by friday, 94 degrees and humid. in new jersey mid-80s tomorrow even along the shore. humidity comes back thursday and friday. 91 on thursday for new jersey. 95 degrees friday. if you are in delaware, tomorrow 85 degrees and sunny. 86 thursday. and by friday midnigh night-90s. we're going to be mostly dry across the weekend but humid. can't rule out an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm but again mostly dry. look at the temperatures though. staying at about the mid to upper 90s for most of the area, and with the humidity these are the days we're going to feel around 100 degrees.
