>> the crowd of delegates erupting into chants of "lock her up," referring to hillary clinton, as new jersey governor chris christie goes on the attack in his address to the rnc. good evening, everybody, i'm jim rosenfield live once again from cleveland, ohio, from the q, the home of the republican national convention. governor christie followed some other heavy hitters in the party tonight, he even overshadowed donald trump, who broke with tradition once again by addressing the crowd via video tonight. and the same night he officially became the party's nominee. >> we're going to win the presidency and bring change and leadership to washington. >> donald trump brought his bravado tonight to the rnc. trump pledged to make america work again. with that, the attack dog role

was left to new jersey governor chris christie, who immediately took aim at trump's opponent in november, hillary clinton. >> lock her up! lock her up! >> the crowd voicing their displeasure with clinton, while christie hit her on her e-mail scandal and what he called her failures as secretary of state. >> time after time after time, the facts and just the facts lead you to the same verdict both around the world and here at home. in libya and nigeria, guilty. in china and syria -- >> guilty! >> in iran and russia and cuba -- >> guilty! >> and here at home for risking american secrets to keep her own and lying to cover it all up -- >> guilty! >> christie also criticizing clinton on a matter of character. my colleague, nbc 10's lauren mayk, is live down on the

convention floor. she's been gathering reaction from the delegates to christie's speech. lauren, what did they have to say? >> reporter: you know, jim, this really got folks riled up here on the floor. there were certain speeches, i can tell you, as we move around this arena, that you can kind of hear from anywhere. rudy giuliani was one of them, this was another one. take a listen. >> lock her up! lock her up! lock her up! lock her up! >> reporter: and after his speech and that huge reaction that he was getting there, governor christie came back down to the floor, back over to the new jersey delegation, and i was able to catch up with him. take a listen. >> going back to your speech, why did you decide to make so much of it about hillary clinton? >> because she's the democratic nominee for president and the person we've got to beat. >> but why not talk more about

donald trump? >> i've spoken plenty about donald trump over the months. when i speak about donald trump, people complain i talk too much about donald trump. listen, i'm not going to be criticized and questioned by anybody who has never stood up there and done it. i made the case i wanted to make tonight, that's the case we need to make to the american people so she loses in november. >> reporter: now that he is officially the nominee, what's that mean for your role for the transition? >> my work doesn't change at all. i've known since may he was going to be the nominee, so doesn't matter at all. we've been working, we're going to continue. we had 150 people show up today at a meeting to help support the transition. >> reporter: ramp things up, though? >> time ramps things up, the closer you get to the election, more it gets ramped up, but feel pretty good about where we are. we're very organized and very well prepared and we're going to make sure he's well prepared november 9th. >> when do you start looking at cabinet positions for him? >> for me to know and you to find out. >> reporter: he didn't want to

tell me about that. we have a couple more questions about who might be in that cabinet, as well. also after the speech i caught up with governor christie's son andrew, talked it him a bit on the floor. he told me he had heard that speech before, but not like this. live in cleveland, i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. jim, back to you. >> and tonight, lauren, the clinton campaign is reacting to chris christie's strong attack. after he finished his speech, hillary clinton's campaign tweeted, "if you think chris christie can lecture anyone on ethics, we have a bridge to sell you." then the campaign linked an article about the bridgegate scandal and hours earlier today clinton said watching the rnc was, in her words, surreal and compared it to the wizard of oz. >> lots of sound and fury, even a fog machine. but when you pull back the curtain, it was just donald trump with nothing to offer to the american people!

>> clinton also revisited trump's bankruptcies in atlantic city. we saw her visit a.c. recently to slam trump on that, saying they caused destruction in the resort town. one of today's major rnc headlines deals with last night's speech by trump's wife melania and accusations she plagiarized or pulled sections from a michelle obama 2008 convention speech. we are learning more about what transpired behind the scenes within the campaign when it comes to how that speech came together. we'll have more on that coming up in just a little bit. for now, back to you, jackie, in philly. >> that dominated so much overnight and throughout the day today. jim rosenfield in cleveland, we look forward to that and we'll see you shortly. back here at home, we are following breaking news on philadelphia's germantown section. that's where the bomb squad is after police found what appears to be explosive devices inside a car. sky force 10 was above the scene

near 20th street just minutes ago. nbc 10's brandon hobson arrived at the scene in germantown. what can you tell us about this. >> reporter: the two homemade devices were found in the mini van down the street. police did not take it away to the scene, but police say the explosives were the equivalent of two quarter sticks of dynamite. officers also found weed and two 3 year olds in the van. let's cut to some video now from sky force 10 over the scene not too long ago. police checked out the van after it was double parked. they smelled marijuana and later saw fireworks and those two homemade explosives. officers took the children out and put them in a safer place. the bomb squad came to get those explosives. police arrested a 31-year-old man. they are not naming him at this hour. they said at least one of the children that was in the mini van was his. back live now, people are able to go back home tonight. police have left the scene, they have gone to question the

31-year-old man and hopefully find out what his plan was with those explosives. of course, this comes very close to the dnc, so police are happy to get that off the streets. live in germantown, nbc 10 news. also a murder-mystery in philadelphia. a woman killed and police say the murderer might have other victims. these surveillance videos were released of their suspect. denise nakano is live at police headquarters with new information. >> reporter: homicide detectives are looking into several cases all targeting prostitutes and if, in fact, these cases are connected, these crimes have now escalated to murder. these photos of a man on a bike are making their rounds in a kensington neighborhood where a woman was beaten and stabbed to death saturday night. >> what he did to her, he could do to a child. the girl was a good girl. >> reporter: the 35-year-old victim escaped from an alley and stumbled naked about a block away to jasper and ledderly

where she collapsed and died. police say the killer may be targeting prostitutes in kensington. two women were attacked earlier this month by a man matching the same description. unlike the most recent case, they survived. >> scary. it's scary. >> it's just scary because i have little brothers and sisters running around the streets. >> reporter: for life long residents it's a reminder of the so-called kensington strangler who confessed and was linked to the sexual assaults and murders of three prostitutes in 2010. >> happens again in the same vicinity, actually in the same spot, you know, it's scary. >> reporter: crime tape and bloodstains from the attack are what's left of saturday night's murder. a suspected serial predator described as a man in his 30s or 40s with a mustache and beard who is on the run, and those closest to the victim concerned that he'll strike again. >> i hope the cops find him before i do, because she was my lady. she was my woman. >> reporter: no arrests have

been made in the case, and detectives are also looking into open homicide cases to see if there's a link there, as well. live from police headquarters, denise nakano, nbc 10 news. florida health officials are investigating a possible case of zika that may not have been carried by a traveler. the case was reported in miami-dade county. the florida department of health has not said whether it was transmitted through a mosquito bite or sexual content. repellent are now being offered it to pregnant women in the area. zika has been linked to severe birth defects in babies. changes to your commute. why it could soon cost more and where speed cameras could start watching over you. and watch this, a driver slams into a police car, barely missing two officers. wait until you hear what the driver was doing instead of watching the road. well, tomorrow another very comfortable day with lower humidity, but that's going to go

and welcome back to our live coverage of the republican national convention in cleveland. we are at the halfway point for this convention and for the second night in a row, amid the parade of politicians and lawmakers, we are seeing members of the trump family speaking to the crowd. donald trump jr. took to the stage tonight, as did tiffany trump, giving us a look at donald the dad. a first, tiffany spoke about what she called a supportive father with an incredible sense of humohumor. she was followed by donald jr., who talked about the man he says was built to lead this country. >> the person who had never run for office before stood on the stage 11 months ago in this very arena with 16 professional

politicians, and this week that same man will stand before you as our party's nominee for the president of the united states of america. >> continuing, though, with the theme of the night, donald jr. attacking hillary clinton, calling her a liability that americans cannot afford. now, it was not all smiles for the trump campaign today, as we've been reporting all day long, other major news outlets, of course, as well. those accusations that melania trump in her speech last night plagiarized portions of a 2008 speech by first lady michelle obama during that convention. the trump campaign pushing back hard against those accusations, but take a listen. >> values. >> the same values. >> that you work hard for what you want in life. >> you work hard for what you want in life. >> that your word is your bond. >> that your word is your bond. >> and you do what you say and keep your promise.

over to check on the driver, who admits to playing the game. >> you okay? >> that's what i get for playing pokemon. >> baltimore police released the video with the warning pokemon go is not all fun and games. you can now use pokemon go to bring home a real pet. a local animal shelter is using the game, hoping to give more dogs and cats a forever home. the philly shelter showed us how it is using the insanely popular mobile game to increase adoptions. here's how it works. if you catch a pokemon at the shelter, you get half off the adoption fee. if you win a gym battle there, that fee is waived. the shelter said it's had at least one person earn a free adoption. the promotion goes until july 22 7bd. pokemon go players aren't the only ones getting an adoption discount this week. good stuff going on saturday. >> yes, fantastic stuff going on

saturday. it is clear the shelters, this is our second annual event. what we're doing is trying to get as many animals adopted nationwide in this event as we possibly can. it's because of overcrowding in the shelter. we need to make space for more animals coming in. if you're looking to adopt a dog or cat, be sure you do your research ahead of time, know the temperament, make sure it's good with kids. the breed you choose is very important. make sure the animal either requires a lot of exercise or space or maybe not. also, if it gets along with kids or other pets, and also if you do have other pets you're not sure about, the shelters encourage you to bring the animals to the shelters so dogs or cats can meet them. we have dozens of local shelters involved in clear the shelter, so either a discounted adoption fee or waiving the adoption fee on saturday. that is going to be the case. just go to our nbc 10 app, also nbc10.com, we have a list of all the shelters participating. it's going to be a big event, so

back, especially starting thursday. friday, saturday, sunday we're going to be feeling close to triple digit heat. if you live in delaware, especially dover, that's where you really notice the triple digit heat over the past few days. not today, but expected to come back as we go into the end of this week and into the weekend. we are going to be dry for the most part as we go through the rest of this week and for the weekend. maybe an afternoon pop-up shower, but really no big relief in sight. take a look what future temperatures does, heat and humidity that comes back, sticks around, and it's going to go into next week. if you look at the forecast at the bottom of your screen you'll see that for you. we're dry across the area. do have some thunderstorms off in maryland, around washington, we could see some of these trying to stray into parts of delaware, but as we go through tonight, most of the area stays dry, so we'll be watching that through tonight. for the most part, this high is going to keep us nice and sunny for tomorrow.
