nbc 10 starts now. >> and lying to cover it all up. new jersey governor chris christie lays out his case and targets hillary clinton and the crowd at the republican national convention eegly agreed. good morning. i'm tracy davidson, live from cleveland on what will be day three of the republican national convention. donald trump is now the official nominee of the republican party for president of the united states. but it was new jersey governor chris christie who got the crowd pretty riled up last çnight. you'll hear more of his comments plus reaction from local delegates and we'll hear what hillary clinton had to say in response to christie's verbal attack. that's coming up. katy, good morning.

>> good morning, tracy. thanks for joining us. it's 4:00 a.m. on your wednesday. we'll check right back in with tracy in just a moment. first, it's shaping up to be another really nice day outside. it's refreshing outside this morning. meteorologist bill henley is here with his first alert neighborhood forecast. am i right, bill? >> you're absolutely right. most areas are going to see plenty of sunshine and low humidity. watching one area for showers, south jersey this morning and southern delaware. cape may is dry. we've seen lightning in the distance. here's why. that's a thunderstorm that's rolling right past vineland at this hour. it's moving to the southeast. quick-moving downpours with that storm. it's not going to it be an all-day rainfall by any means. clear skies in the lehigh valley, shaping up to be a pleasant one for most of delaware, philadelphia and the suburbs. we'll go from the 60s and 70s into 80s. we won't see any 90s today. we'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in just a few minutes. first, let's check in with jessica boyington see how the

roads are shaping up on a thursday morning. >> we're starting off in egg harbor township over in new jersey on the garden state parkway. there's an accident headed southbound around exit 36 going toward 322. the right lane is closed there. so lanes still getting by. traffic won't be a huge issue, not a lot of backups, especially at this time. the vine street expressway, right around 24th street, not dealing with the construction we typically see, westbound or eastbound, all lanes open this morning. the pa turnpike, drive times here, construction as well. p.a. turnpike eastbound friend willow grove and bensalem, watch out for restrictions there. 22 minutes west or eastbound from route 1 to valley forge. taking aim at democrat

hillary clinton. the crowd erupted into chants "lock her up." christie laid out his case against what he called clinton's leadership failures. the federal prosecutor in effect prosecuted a multiprong case against hillary clinton. the convention crowd responded to his litany of charges against her. >> in china and syria, in iran and russia and cuba and here at home for risking america's secrets, to keep her own and lying to cover it all up -- >> hillary. >> christie wrapped up with a call to defeat clinton and a call to vote trump as the next president. gop delegates we talked to

with embraced the message from chris christie, embraced the criticism of hillary clinton including members of the delegation from pennsylvania and new jersey who we talked with right after christie's speech. >> i think christie hit it home. he's in the best form possible in front of a crowd setting forth the reasons why hillary clinton should not be elected president of the united states. the governor was motivational. he was stark. he drew a stark contrast between the choices that we have to make. he gave a great speech.ç >> clinton tweeted out this response to christie's criticisms, if you think chris christie can edlecture anyone o ethics, we have a bridge to sell you. she compared watching the rnc to with the the wizard of oz."

>> even a fog machine. when you pulled back the curtain, it was just donald trump with nothing to offer to the american people! >> clinton also repeated her previous criticisms of donald trump's bankruptcies in atlantic city saying they caused destruction in the resort town. another of donald trump's former primary rival, former republican presidential candidate ben carson associated clinton with the devil during his speech to the delegates, carson said one of clinton's mentors wrote a book dedicated to lucifer. >> if we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who acknowledges lucifer? think about that. >> carson also criticized what he called clinton's secular progressive agenda. for a time last night, videos from the rnc, the gop convention ended up on vice president joe biden's twitter

account. the tweets came from a twitter mirror tablet that was used recently at a cancer event. the tweets were eventually deleted. coming up at 4:15, donald trump continues to break with tradition addressing the delegates again last night, this time from new york. we'll explain that. at 4:30, another round of former political rivals are scheduled to speak today. that includes donald trump's vp choice. back to you, katy. >> thank you, tracy, more in the next hour. police say a car stop led them to a troubling and potentially dangerous discovery. nbc 10's matt delucia is live outside philadelphia police headquarters with more on this car stop and what they found. hi, matt. >> hi, katy. police have spent the night questioning this driver, trying to figure out his motives for

having these explosive devices in his car. this is what police found shortly before 10:00 last night at 20th and champlost, a white mini van, double parked. officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from that vehicle. then they noticed two 3-year-olds and what looked like fireworks in the van. the bomb squad was called out. one of the more troubling discoveries to them is that some of the devices were homemade. >> had the strength equivalent to about a quarter stick of dynamite, which is pretty powerful. depending on how close those devices were to explode near people, they could cause, i'm sure, serious injury, possibly even death. >> reporter: the 31-year-old driver has been arrested. he's facing a number of charges and those fireworks and explosive devices were confiscated. police say without knowing what the exact motives are here

again, that questioning still under way, without knowing the motives, it's hard to say exactly what was going on here but they say it is especially big concern to them, because of the democratic national convention coming up next week. they don't want to find any explosive devices in any vehicles. they have their guard up already. this was just one case where they wepe able to make this arrest and now we're trying to figure out what is going on here. live at police headquarters, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> 4:08. a trial date has been set for the man charged with ambushing and killing a pennsylvania state police trooper. the trial will begin over a half year from now in march. the pike conte judge already said an out of county jury will be chosen to hear theication c 33-year-old eric frein. he's charged with shooting corporal bryon dickson and shooting another trooper in 2014. he led police on a tense 48-day

manhunt before u.s. marshals caught him. he's entered a not guilty plea. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. 4:09. i'm tracking showers and thunderstorms in south jersey, moving to the southeast about 15 miles an hour. that storm is coming down at a pretty good clip in the vineland area. but it is moving to the southeast. it won't be long, it will move towards the jersey shore. what we have been seeing is heavier downpours and bigger thunderstorm activity in parts of delaware, across delaware bay and there go those thunderstorms, they're exiting the delaware beaches right now. most of the day it is going to be dry. the hour by hour forecast shows quiet conditions at 7:30 this morning. as we go into the afternoon hours, we could see more pop-up showers in south jersey and delaware. most of the rest of the area will be dry. 74 degrees in philadelphia, 82 degrees, low humidity at lunch time today and the humidity stays low as the suburbs climb

into the 80s this afternoon. a slight breeze out of the northeast at 3 miles an hour later today. the lehigh valley is in the clear. cooler than yesterday at this time. 62 degrees. low 70s at 10:00 this morning. then a nice warmup of the humidity stays low for the lehigh valley and for new jersey. lots of sunshine through the day. 82 degrees at lunch time. a little bit warmer in the afternoon. the shore with those northeasterly or easterly winds later in the day, it's going to be 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon. you'll see lots of sunshine. there is a chance of a spotty shower at the shore and a chance of some scattered showers, especially in central delaware for the daytime hours. most of the day it will be clear and warming into the low 80s. pretty nice day today. but if you check out the seven day at the bottom of the screen, there serious heat, the ten-day outlack to show you how long that will last when i come back. katy? >> thanks so much, bill.

we'll engine joy it today. we'll get a check of traffic with jessica boyington. we start off in new jersey. >> west deptford around route 130 where we have no problems in either direction right now. this is typically not a time we'd see a lot of delays or backups. 295 southbound from the 42 freeway, heading over into delaware, a 22-minute trip there. average speeds look like they're into the 60s as well. white marsh, watch for a disabled vehicle. this was reported on skippack pike and dorsum pike. 13 minutes on the schuylkill into center city and no problems currently on the blue route. katy? >> thank you, jessica. speaking of drivers, listen up. it will soon cost you more money to travel along the pennsylvania turnpike. turnpike tolls will soon be going up. we'll explain how much more you'll have to shell out at those toll plazas and the reason behind the price jump.

e-z pass users. cash customers will use more. the increase begins after midnight january 7th. we're counting down the days to nbc 10's and the annual clear the shelter adoption drive. this saturday you'll be able to pick up a four-legged friend for free. there is so many animals in need of a good home. we wanted to introduce you to one of the lucky ones. earlier this year, a good smar than met the puppy. he had several infects and eventually had to have one of his legs and part of an ear amputated. he's healthy and has a forever family now. they say it was louie's big brown eyes that drew him in. >> his eyes. the look he gave us. he was at the hospital after his surgery and he just had this look. it wasn't like a helpless look. it was a happy look that he gave us. he was unclaimed.

on the move. moving to the southeast at 20 miles an hour which will happen in clarks mill by just after 4:30 this morning. there's another area of heavy thunderstorms just moving offshore, that is heading offshore and moving out to sea. most of the day will be dry for most of our neighborhoods. warm, too, upper 80s. the humidity is going to be low. lansdale 86 degrees, 85 in doylestown. easton will warm from the 60s into the upper 80s this afternoon. bright sunshine in new jersey, though there is a chance of a scattered shower. we're seeing it this morning.ç hammonton, 85 degrees. that chance will be around for atlantic city and ocean city. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall. you'll see lots of sunshine, too. warm temperatures in the low 80s at the shore. rehoboth beach starting off with scattered showers and thunderstorms. those will be moving out to sea. a chance of more storms will decrease as the day goes on.

after a nice day today, 87 degrees. we get another cool start tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon starts the warming trend that will have us seeing temperatures soar by the end of the week. 96 degrees friday. upper 90s for saturday and sunday. with those higher temperatures will come high humidity as well. finally, a chance of some storms on monday and tuesday but still well into the 90s monday. not quite as hot tuesday. 93 degrees. and into the low 90s for thursday, friday, close to the 90 degree mark. serious heat is on the way but we have a pretty nice one for today until that heat starts moving in. katy? >> thanks, bill. it's really comfortable if you walk outside, even at this early hour. we are going to check the roads with a check of the blue route traffic. jessica boyington? >> we are looking at drive times, katy, the blue route around the baltimore pike. 15 minutes right now headed southbound. if you're heading from the schuylkill expressway southbound toward 95, no big problems or

delays yet. this is typically what the drive time looks like. you can see that reflected on the roads as well. it looks the same. average speeds still into the mid-60s. we're not dealing with delays on the blue route. maybe dlois in new jersey, headed more toward the shore area. there's an accident on the garden state parkway headed southbound around exit 36 which is for 322. no huge problems or delays by the scene. it is blocking the right-hand lane and part of the land right-hand shoulder. traffic is allowed to move by the scene. route 202 looks okay. no big problems in either direction right now. maybe a slowdown because of road work. nbc 10 needs your help recognizing the people who are making a difference in the community. we're giving away grants to local nonprofits we call it 21st century solutions. the goal is to support organizations that are implementing new and innovatiiv programs. the application is on wur website, nbc10.com.

merion joined community leaders and shared their concerns about officers response in recently police-involved shootings across the country. the group also discussed ways to rebuild trust between police and the community they serve. one official had this advice, if you get stopped and pulled over. >> roll your window down, put your hands on the wheel and that's it. wait for the officer to give you instructions. don't go reaching to are your driver's license or registration. if you have a carrying permit, tell the officer. don't take your gun out and show him or her. >> another meeting is set for next month. stop feeding the seagulls in ocean city or be prepared to pay a phone. that's the message from the shoretown's mayor. on the city's website, police will be strictly enforcing this law. too many people continue to field wildlife at the shore. fines can go as high as $500 and 90 days in jail. also down the shore, north
