ted cruz, still unclear whether he'll endorse the nominee. >> peter alexander, thank you very much. you may have been following, a bit of a side story going on whether parts of melania trump's trump monday night was plagiarized. for a moment last night, similar allegations aimed at donald trump jr. they were quickly explained. nbc's hallie jackson has more on all of that. hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning. with the stage now set for night three of the gop convention, new details are emerging about that night one speech from melania trump that you mentioned, and accusations that she plagiarized some passages from michelle obama. it's why when donald trump jr. said a few lines last night that seemed similar to someone else's work, the initial reaction, not again. turns out it wasn't quite plagiarism, maybe a bit of recycling with the trump campaign now pushing back. a false alarm spreading fast online after the "daily show" tweeted similarities between

donald trump jr.'s speech and the clutch by conservative writer frank buckley. >> our schools used to be an elevator to the middle class, now they're tall stalled on the ground floor. >> turns out he was a principle speechwriter. it's not an issue. it's no clear who's behind melania trump's speech, similar to michelle obama speech. sources tell nbc news the trump team hired veteran speechwriter matthew scully, the draft submitted shows none of the passages in question. a senior trump aide telling nbc news, that draft was mostly rejected, but remaining tight-lipped about who added these lines -- >> the values. >> you work hard. >> you work hard for what you want in life. >> that your word is your bond and you do what you say. >> and you do what you say -- >> reporter: donald trump jr. defending his stepmother. >> works with speech writers.

and that's it. >> reporter: even as top trump aides and surrogates first argued there wasn't any cribbing, just common cliches. >> things like care, respect and compassion, you know, those are not extraordinary words. >> a simple google search of three phrases comes up with everything from sparkle, to john legend to notorious b.i.g. >> reporter: turn it in dotcom found 6% of trump's speech matched the first lady's eight years ago. word for word, trump used 23 of the same words in a row that obama did. and this morning it's still not clear who's responsible for adding those passages to melania trump's speech. although some reports indicate it may have had something to do with a former ballet dancer with longtime ties to the trump family, would go with mrs. trump on that. in the meantime, a lot of eyes on eric trump who will take the stage tonight. matt and savannah, i just spoke with him here on the convention floor, he says his goal tonight,

to explain the "why." why people should vote for his father. >> hallie, thank you, from the convention floor. let us bring in nicole and mark. good morning. 24 hours ago we sat and knew exactly the headline. all about that speech we just talked about. what is the headline this morning? >> learning that donald trump jr. and chris christie begin to calm the jittery nerves of the gop. >> and donald trump is the official nominee, changed the psychology. not got the party fully united but it moving towards a little bit of a normal situation where it's the red team against the blue team. >> let's talk about the speeches last night. donald trump jr. had a difficult job, and in a way he took on more than he needed to, but it seemed like he delivered. not only did he do the character witness for his father, which most children of a candidate would do, he also made a policy argument, and also took on hillary clinton. do you think it was effective? >> you know, i do, and i think -- we've you talked about the family all week because

they've been thrust into controversy, not willingly, but, you know, donald trump jr. did what every kid of a politician is able to do. more good will in the candidates themselves. all the ickiness attaching inside to a candidate does not attach to a kid. he took a risk, but pulled it off. a talented messenger. >> and one of the speeches, governor chris christie, sometimes prosecuting, literally and figuratively, hillary clinton, and it brought out a lot of the anger that we've been talking about over the course of this campaign that is in the electorate. we heard it in their chants of "lock her up" and "guilty," does that anger work at an event like this? >> a lot of republicans, even trump supporters didn't like the chant, thought they maybe went a little too far. the reality is, donald trump probably couldn't beat any other democrat running for president but for hillary clinton because of her weaknesses on issues and

chris christie talked about that. trust and honesty. if they're going to win, people like chris christie and donald trump saying to the country, you can't be for hillary clinton. that's the only alternative. went too far for some, but that's the emotion. politics rely a lot on emotion. >> and nicole, the speeches have been a lot about hillary clinton, as much, if not more, about a takedown of hillary clinton, and a positive case for donald trump. hillary clinton has high negatives. so is this effective in terms of flushing out for people? okay, this is why you don't feel good about her, or go too far? does it overestimate how much people don't care for hillary clinton? >> i think we underestimate the power of knelltive messaging. campaigns are -- it's sort of a fantasy and you start to -- you have to raise your positives. in this campaign, in this climate, with these candidates, it's never going to happen. this is going to be an incredibly negative campaign. both candidates of vulnerable on their negatives, so neither

eastern. 7:00 pacific here on nbc. new developments this morning surrounding the zika outbreak. florida health officials investigating a new case that apparently did not stem from travel to another region of the world. if it is confirmed, it would be the first evidence that zika has spread mosquitoes here in the continental u.s. all cases up to now have been in people who traveled to overseas regioning or their partners. going to new york now. most lanes of the tappan zee bridge just north of the city have reopened this morning after a crane collapsed across the entire width of that bridge on tuesday. as you can imagine, this created a traffic nightmare. the bridge was shut down in both directions for about five hours. transportation officials say six of the seven lanes have now reopened. no cars were hit when that crane collapsed. no one was seriously hurt. it's amazing. officials say it's unclear what

caused that crane to fall. >> a lot of people saying their prayers, breathing a sigh of relief. down to al, a first check of the weather and gorgeous day in cleveland. >> spectacular but a lot of heat and misery around a good portion of the country, guys. look at the map. by the numbers. 46 million people under some sort of a heat advisory. 16 states covers 575,000 square miles. look at how many people are under that area where it feels like over 100 degrees. the actual air temperatures, upper 90s to 100. factor in the heat and humidity, it will feel like in minneapolis over 100. kansas city, oklahoma, dallas and rapid city. we go on into the northeast and the midwest. chicago, cleveland, atlanta, new orleans, heading towards the end of the week, that feels-like temperatures well above 100 and even the northeast. we are looking at a lot of heat. air temperaturewise, we have temperatures right around 100. factor in the humidity and the

>> philadelphia police are looking for two men in ski masks who gunned down a man in the parkside neighborhood. it happened just before 2:00 this morningen viola street. the man was going to his car when someone shot him multiple times. he died at the scene. >> now to a shooting investigation in west oaklane. a man and woman walking into a chinese restaurant heard a fight. they tried to run, but the man was shot. he should be okay. >> the philadelphia police arrested a driver overnight after finding fireworks, explosi explosives, and children in his car in germantown. when officered checked out a white minivan double parked, they noticed the strong smell of marijuana. they then noticed two 3-year-olds and what looked like fireworks in the van. they called the bomb squad and confiscated the fireworks. the driver is now facing charges. another update in 25 minutes, and you can always get the latest news and weather with the nbc10 app.
