money toward home improvement or travel instead of investments. a toddler who's undergoing treatment at children's hospital of philadelphia had her day made by several police officers. this is little arianna lewis of marlton, who's been battling a rare form of leukemia since last year. she's now cancer-free, but still getting her treatment. she relies on her ipad for movies and face time with family, but this weekend, the ipad disappeared from her hospital room. when police couldn't find it, they gave ariana one of their personal ipads. coming up on nbc 10 news at 4:00, you'll hear from ariana's parents and how the simple act of kindness has helped the entire family. well, this saturday, animal shelters across the country will come together to clear the shelters, and if you ever entertain the idea of opening your home and your heart to an animal in need, you'll definitely want to see this next story. this is rocco. he's a terrier mix that was up

for adoption last year at the first clear the shelters event at philadelphia's animal care and control team shelter in huntington park. and at the end of the day, rocco remained at the shelter. until one of my nbc 10 colleagues decided to take a chance on rocco. melissa signs is here with rocco along with lynn anderson, who is rocco's pen pal. melissa, thank you for being here. thank you for walking over the hundred feet from your desk to spend a little time with us. we've got to point out, this is the second year of the clear the shelters and we couldn't do it without you. a lot of people don't know, melissa's also the one who sets up our kids with our shoots for wednesday's child. you're really great at setting up things for adoption, whether it's dogs or children. >> anybody who needs a home. >> tell us, take us back to last year, you're volunteering for clear the shelters. you're looking for a dog at the time? >> i just told myself that any dog that was left at the end of the day, kind of like a sorry
11:45 am
case, yeah, who was good with kids and good with cats. so my sister actually saw him first. i hadn't seen him, but i said, if no one else took him, i would take him. so at that moment, i didn't even realize his skin issues. i just wanted to take someone who had kind of gotten walked past all day. and he was left. >> what were rocco's skin -- >> up here, all of this was missing and all of his chest and under his stomach was red, just red and crusty and not cute. >> it's been a year, you can't tell that now. he's -- he looks fully recovered. he's doing well? >> yeah, he's very well. it didn't take much. just on regular dog food. >> that's him last year. >> yeah, the other, you can tell, down here where the skin was off, where it's red and kind of missing. people at the shelter thought he was, when he first came, 8 or 10, but he's -- receivhe was 18s
11:46 am
at the time. he just looked like an old dog. but he just needed some good food and a home. >> and some tlc, which he's gotten from you. and that's amazing how that goes so far. melissa, what's your message to people who are afraid to give someone like rocco, who may not be cute and fluffy and so small as some people are out looking, you know, for a dog. what would your message be for a dog like rocco? >> i would just say, just don't walk past them. he had been there for over a month. he was there all day, literally, thousands of people saw him. but just because of the way he looked, despite what said on his tag, about being good with kids, good with cats, good with anybody, they just walked past him. it didn't take long for him to go from those pictures to this. on saturday, you'll probably see a lot of roccos, but to give them a chance. >> give them a shot. lynn, you were rocco's pen pal. tell us about that program and how that works. >> the pen pal program is volunteer-based.
11:47 am
volunteers pick pen pals that the shelter staff has decided are pen pal quality. so pen pals generally need something. they need additional promotion, they need additional enrichment. more time out. maybe additional baths if there are skin issues. so kind of the dogs that have been there for a while, need something more. it's not just their looks in a cage that are getting them adopted. >> so you step in and help out and provide -- >> that's right. there's a large volunteer base that does pen palling. you commit to the dog and you commit to getting them out multiple times a week to do training enrichment, that type of thing, and get them whatever they need to make them more adoptable. they're generally really adoptable dogs, they just need something. so that's what we do. so i was assigned to rocco, and got to spend a little bit of time with him. melissa got him really quite quickly. >> it seems to me like the foster care system, which melissa and i are just as
11:48 am
familiar with. there's -- there are -- there's a process. and sometimes before they get adopted to a home, kids will go through the foster care system. often they do that, or sometimes they're in shelters. but it sounds like the pen pal program is sort of like that, where, just, you know, somebody who may not be ready to adopt right now, but in the in the meantime, they can help out, in the process, until somebody like rocco gets adopted. is that how it works? >> it is. and it really gives you a chance to really get to know the animal. my suggestion for this weekend, for anyone who's going to adopt, find out who's on the pen pal list and talk to that dog's pen pal. they'll tell you more about their behavior, because they've spent a lot of time with that animal. so we knew rocco was house trained. we knew that. we knew that he had a -- quite a solid disposition and he wasn't really high energy and he passed his cat test and the kids test. so, that would be my suggestion. find out who's on the pen pal list and ask to speak to their pen pal and they'll give you all the information. >> he looks really good now.
11:49 am
>> yeah. >> you're proud of him? >> he's a good dog. i'm shocked he's sitting here like this. >> melissa was sure something was going to happen while rocco was on the set here, but he's just fine. i'm glad i had a chance to meet rocco before we were out in the hallway top. thank you very much. dozens of shelters are participating in clear the shelters this saturday, july 23rd, for more information, go to nbc10.com or check out the nbc 10 app. melissa and jen, thank you so much for coming in. you too, rocco. >> nice job, pall. we're enjoying a beautiful start to the day. lots of sunshine, nice and warm, too. a gentle breeze is blowing here at the nbc 10 studios. you can see the flag. that's still a northerly wind. that's bringing in the dry air that will make it comfortable through the day. 70s in the lehigh valley, through the suburbs. this is where it dropped down into the 60s first thing this morning. low 80s in philadelphia and a nice day at the shore, too. right now, the suburbs, there
11:50 am
are still some cooler spots. 60s have disappeared now, it's in the 70s and 80 degrees in west callen township. phoenixville is 80, while it's 78 in warrington and bedminister, also up to 78 and climbing. but we started off with some showers and thunderstorms. first thing this morning, we saw some distant lightning. this was the view from the marquis de lafayette hotel. cape may saw some of those showers, but most of the rain is out of the picture for us, for today. but there are some chances, even though the humidity is nice and low, the humidity will be climbing over the next several da days, so the rain chances will be going up in our area, and we'll see those chances increase as the heat and humidity return. showers move through atlantic city, it's dry right now. and dry for the rest of the area. but there's still a possibility of some isolated showers in south jersey and delaware during the day today. but mainly dry. and warm. a typical summer day. if not a little better than the typical summer day this time of

year, 85 in summerton this afternoon. doylestown, westchester, and lansdale, will enjoy sunshine. if we get a shower, the shore and parts of delaware we might see them, an isolated shower in hamilton is possible. but most of these areas will stay dry today. but the heat is on at the end of the week. this is the heat index projection. the feels-like temperature when you take the humidity and combine it with the temperature, this is friday morning. this is when it will start to feel the humidity back in the area. and one of the signs, it won't be as cool-feeling. 72 to start with. that's warmer-feeling than what we had this morning. and friday afternoon, it will feel like it's in the upper 90s. and the temperatures will be close, into the middle 90s. that's friday. on saturday morning, a warmer start, 77 degrees, the feels-like temperature in philadelphia. doylestown and trenton, 76 and 79 in burlington, and watch those afternoon temperatures. high heat and humidity. it will feel like more than 100
11:52 am
degrees for westchester, wilmington, dover, swedesboro, philadelphia, vorhees, and even egg harbor township at 106 degrees saturday afternoon. there's some serious heat on the way. ten-day forecast, the ten-day on ten shows upper 80s for today, same tonight into tomorrow morning, 68 degrees. and the temperature starts to climb tomorrow. the humidity will still stay low for most of the day tomorrow, but it will be climbing on friday. 96, the high temperature on friday. and then that steam heat that we saw for saturday afternoon and again on sunday, and again on monday. though monday, there is a chance we'll see some showers and thunderstorms. 96, the forecast high for monday afternoon. the numbers start to come down a little bit, just a bit, for tuesday and wednesday. still hot and humid, with some isolated showers possible for those days. and again on thursday, by friday afternoon, storms are likely, but we'll still up to 90 degrees. we'll be right back.

the democratic national convention starts on monday in philadelphia. if you stop a dnc donkey and take notes on what you see, you could get some pretty cool prizes. here's how it works. it's a mobile scavenger hunt that you play through your phone. the app is called scavify. once you see a donkey, you use
11:56 am
the taken to complete challenges specific to that donkey. once the challenge is complete, you earn points. those points can be cashed in for some pretty cool prizes. >> there are groups that have let us know when they're going to be out there. they've gotten permits, where they're going to go, if they're going anywhere at all, what their issue is, and there's always going to be pop-up protests. and those are the ones that are the wild cards. you don't know exactly how they're going to go, where they're going to traverse the city, and those are the ones that potentially have more implications to traffic and things like that. >> that's police commissioner richard ross obviously talking about the dnc next week in philadelphia. meanwhile, the grand prize drawing will take place on friday. you can start collecting your prizes at the independence visitor center tomorrow. don't forget #donkeysaroundtown. and today at 4:00, the nbc 10 response team is helping a woman who relied on music to help relax after a long day.
