we are coming to you live once again from cleveland, ohio, home of the republican national convention, where tonight donald trump's vp pick takes center stage. right now, though, the infamous speech from donald trump's wife is still in the spotlight. today brought an apology after the accusations melania plagiarized part of her speech. that apology coming from a trump staffer. she said she mistakenly used passages from michelle obama's speech eight years ago. i'm jim rosenfield live from the q here in cleveland, ohio. we'll get to more about the speech from melania trump coming up in just a minute. but we want to tell you about

events that have been happening in the past few minutes. protests happening right now in downtown cleveland. several police officers were pushed. they've made multiple arrests. we got this video just within the past 30 minutes. this is really the first time we've seen anything like this involving protesters. there have been other peaceful protests out here. we'll keep an eye on this and let you know if anything more develops. now, back to the controversy swirling over melania trump's speech. today it took a new twist. >> you work hard for what you want in life. >> reporter: for days the trump campaign said the similarities between melania's speech and a speech in 2008 by michelle obama were a coincidence. a new explains from a trump organization staff writer, releasing a statement taking the blame and revealing what happened. she said, quote, over the phone, mrs. trump read me some passages from mrs. obama's speech as examples.

i wrote them down and included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final speech. this was my mistake, and i feel terrible for the chaos i have caused melania and the trumps as well as mrs. obama. no harm was meant, end quote. donald trump said on social media that the speech controversy was a positive for his campaign. he tweeted, quote, good news is melania's speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics, especially if you believe all press is good press, end quote. >> welcome to cleveland. >> reporter: tonight cdonald trump's running mate will take center stage. giving a preview of what we'll hear tonight. >> i'm convinced what begins in cleveland will end in the white house. >> reporter: all right. so among those helping donald

trump, trump once fired op the "apprentice." lauren mayk is joining me in the q with that story. lauren? >> reporter: she lives in philadelphia, but spending this week in cleveland at the rnc. now, she took part in the "apprentice" show, with donald trump, back in 2005. and she tells me she first got involved with the trump campaign when someone asked her what she thought about donald trump. then she started becoming a surrogate for the campaign. well, today i asked her about the controversy surrounding melania trump's speech. what does that say, though, about the sort of checks and balances and the organization of the campaign at this point? >> i don't see melania's three or five or 15 words shared with michelle obama to be any testament to the campaign at all. it happens frequently to people

10 and on the nbc 10 app. look out for our live shows tonight and each night of the convention at 7:00 p.m. from high level dignitaries to tens of thousands of proteste protesters, security is a major pri oert during the democratic national convention. local, state, and local law enforcement are coordinating efforts to keep things safe. today we found fencing started to go up around the wells fargo center to create a secured perimeter. drivers parking in the median on south broad street are being warned they will have to find somewhere else to go starting sunday. >> we're prepared. and there's a lot that goes into these things, a lot of planning. but there are a lot of unknowns a lot of times as well. >> residents in the district will be especially impacted with road closures. at 6:00, a meeting is scheduled at the american swedish museum to answer any questions and

concerns. we have a live look at the wells fargo center. the host, of course, to that convention. things already starting to take shape here and throughout the city in advance of the gathering. mitch blocker getting a bird's-eye view of the changes in sky force 10 tonight. >> mitch, what are you seeing? >> reporter: guys, we're already starting to see an increase of philly police presence. this is outside of the security perimeter. the philadelphia police department will primarily be responsible for outside of that fencing that you mentioned. secret service is going to be putting up 3 1/2 miles, 19,000 feet of anti-climb fencing surrounding the wells fargo center. you can see a little bundle of it right there. they're going to hire -- they've hired an outside contractor in order to install all of that fencing. the philly police department, secret service, the fbi, they're all working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies throughout our region, as you

said. a lot of this will start at noon saturday. that is when street closures for some of the final fencing and the barriers goes into effect. no center median parking on south broad street. the surrounding wells fargo area, again, the jurisdiction of the philadelphia police department. they'll be primarily responsible for any protests outside of that area while the secret service will take the lead for security. the latest from sky force 10. >> mitch, thank you. the coverage of the democratic national convention continues in the next half hour. local businesses are offering convention deals using a special hash tag. that story is ahead at 5:30. turning now to our weather. a perfect beach day as we take a live look at conditions in cape may. look at how many people are out there on the beach. it is a break from the high heat and humidity today. but the sweltering conditions return tomorrow ahead of another likely heat wave over the weekend. >> we're talking about yet another heat wave.

let's go to meteorologist sheena parveen. >> it's going to get much hotter, more humid through the weekend. cape may, temperatures right around 80 degrees. just fantastic, with the low humidity. 84 right now in philadelphia. pennsylvania suburbs mid-80s, as well as the south jersey neighborhoods. lehigh valley really comfortable right now. 82 degrees fleetwood. allentown 84. white hall township 84 degrees. ble bethlehem, 85. even if you're in the sun, it's really nice. but in the next several days being in the sun is going to be potentially dangerous. pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, heat wave coming mostly friday through monday. this is the period of time we'll have enough heat and humidity to make temperatures feel like anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. if you see the seven-day at the

bottom of your screen, we've outlined friday, saturday, sunday and monday. that's because of the dangerous heat. we go from tomorrow back in the 90s, all the way through the weekend and into next week. yes, it is going to be very hot outside. it's going to be very humid. and that doesn't seem to be breaking anytime soon. we'll take a look at your forecast with the extended heat wave coming up. philadelphia police need your help finding this man who they believe is attacking prostitutes. they say the suspect was captured on the surveillance video at a convenience store in frankfurt on july 12th. police say the man later choked a woman and sexually assaulted her on jasper street. they believe he's also responsible for the beating and stabbing death of a woman in kensington over the weekend. meanwhile, in delaware, there's now a $40,000 reward to help solve a murder mystery involving a college student. 19-year-old malcolm evans was driving to work earlier this month when he was hit by a

bullet and crashed his car. he died at a hospital. today evans' family joined police in asking the public for help catching his killer. they believe the delaware state university student was an innocent victim. >> i just can't tell you the hole that we all have in our hearts. i miss him dearly. and i just can't believe that one of my beautiful sons will not be with us anymore. >> investigators say a witness saw several men in the area near the scene, but they took off before police arrived. bill cosby is now completely blind and homebound inside his pennsylvania property. that's according to a report in the "new york post" that says cosby suffers from degenerative eye disease. cosby is awaiting trial in the sexual assault case against him. he's accused of attacking a former employee inside his montgomery home back in 2004.

cosby said the incident was consensual. happening now, people are preparing to gather in horsham to talk about the safety of their drinking water and their legal options. a montgomery county law firm is hosting the meeting at the williamson banquet hall at 6:00 tonight. that law firm represents residents who filed complaints against toxic water. residents around the former naval air station joint reserve base, horsham guard station and warfare center are encouraged to attend. a philadelphia top cop is in the hospital with cancer. he's in a miami hospital with stage 4 lung cancer. the 68-year-old was one of the most prominent and also controversial police chiefs of the generation. he led police during the 2000 rnc convention here. he faced criticism for working

the pokemon go game is at the center of a robbery investigation now down in dover. on saturday at 3:00, a 20-year-old man was playing the game on legislative avenue. he said a group of men called out to him. he thought they were there to play the game as well. instead, when we walked over to them, they took his cash and a gold necklace that he was wearing. also in dover, a group of advocates for the homeless set up a temporary camp of tents. at the corner of division and state streets. the group wants city officials to approve a plan to build 15 small houses for the homeless on the property of victory church. the houses would be 200 square feet and include a bed, bathroom and kitchenette. center city, philadelphia, is home to a new target near 12th and chestnut streets within

a block of jefferson hospital and below dozens of new apartments. it's a condensed version of a popular retail chain with a central apparel section. >> people are interested in the grab-and-go, so they can come in before work and grab their breakfast and lunch. >> target is also planning to open another store like this one seven blocks away in rittenhouse square in october. best buy is teaming up with a school for a two-day tech camp for kids. >> it's called the geek squad academy camp at the charter school. students got hands-on experience in topics like 3-d printing and coding. it's bringing high-tech education to underserved young people for ten years. we are just 16 days away from the 2016 summer olympics in rio. nbc 10 is your home for all the action.

pretty nice. still nice and dry. we're not really going to get the rain relief either, once the temperatures really start to heat up. philadelphia right now 84 degrees. pennsylvania suburbs mostly the mid-80s. mid to low 80s lehigh valley. delaware temperatures around the mid-80s. now we're going to look at our new jersey neighborhoods. 84 voorhees. piney hall 82. lumberton 85. florence coming in at 82 degrees. as well as princeton. still going to feel comfortable tonight. but tomorrow you'll notice the humidity creeping up. heat and humidity, that moves in tomorrow. gets more intense friday. saturday, sunday, and monday. so that is why we have the first alert out from friday to monday. we're looking at dangerous heat. so you don't want to be outside for several hours at a time. stay in the shade, stay hydrated, check on the elderly. never leave children and animals in the car. way too hot for that. friday, 96. saturday 98, sunday 99.

as well as monday. so actual temperatures approaching 100 degrees. but with the humidity, it's going to feel like over 100 degrees. so it is going to be very hot as we end out the week and all across the weekend. there's not going to be much in the way of rain relief in the forecast. a few showers around parts of southern sussex county, that's about it. we'll stay pretty dry for a pretty long stretch here with that heat and humidity, as long as that stays with us. temperatures for tomorrow, 92 degrees if you're in tacony. allentown coming in at 90. humidity, a little bit higher than today. if you're in sicklerville, 88. wilmington 91 degrees tomorrow. here's your weekend forecast. friday, 96 degrees in philadelphia. we're going to approach 100 over the weekend. pennsylvania suburbs staying about the mid to upper 90s. south jersey as well. if you're along the shore this weekend, it's going to stay mostly dry.

look inside the quicken loans arena in cleveland. day three of the republican national convention. and we are here to bring you all the action tonight. indiana governor, mike pence, will take center stage, he will be in the spotlight to formally accept his party's nomination for vice president in a primetime speech. but it is a speech from monday night that is still in the news here with new developments happening just today. a trump organization staff writer is now admitting she mistakenly included passages in a 2008 michelle obama speech in mrs. trump's convention speech. meredith mciver released a statement today taking the blame and saying that she offered her resignation, but donald trump rejected it. the trump campaign had previously said the speech similarities were a coincidence. now, after the speech, members

of trump's team say it's more important than ever to show america that trump is a good man. nbc 10's tracy davidson asked rudy giuliani today about that. >> to a large extent characterizing him in a very unfair way, including this vicious attack on his wife. this man is a wonderful family man. i've known him for years. taking care of police officers, firefighters, people who have been injured anonymously. >> it's such an honor to join your family to welcome you to cleveland. we're excited to hear you address the nation tomorrow night. >> reporter: donald trump holding a rally with mike pence in cleveland this afternoon. trump and pence just gave brief remarks there. pence will obviously give a longer speech to the rnc tonight. nbc news survey found nearly half of registered republicans don't know enough about pence to

even have an opinion about him. tonight's other speakers include texas senator and primary runner-up ted cruz who has remained reluctant to endorse trump. another former trump rival, florida senator marco rubio will address the delegates, by video. trump's son eric will follow his brother and sister at the podium tonight. and former house speaker newt gingrich will also speak. donald trump jr. gave hints about his father's speech coming up tomorrow night. here's what he said when he was asked if he would deliver that speech with a teleprompter or whether it would be more free-wheeling. donald jr. saying that this is a time when there will be discipline. so it does appear that donald trump will be reading from that teleprompter, and from prepared remarks tomorrow night. that's the latest live from cleveland. for right now, let's send it back to you in philly. >> sticking to the script. we know a little bit about that. jim rosenfield live in cleveland. thanks, jim.

and a two-night stay at the hyatt at the bellview. a famous actress is in philadelphia tonight to stump for hillary clinton. she's hanging with workers at a women-to-women phone bank. she spoke at a woman's round table in glenside about how she thinks a trump-pence administration would hurt women's rights. we have a live look at the wells fargo center. the center will be the host of the convention, and things are already taking shape here. and throughout the city in advance of the gathering of the dnc. nbc 10's mitch blocker is getting a bird's-eye view of the convention center tonight. >> the transformation is under way, guys. i'll take you down to citizens bank. this is going to be where the line of demarcation is between what is secure and what is not secure, where the general public will be able to go. the security fence we've heard so much about, the secret

service putting up about 19,000 feet of fencing, 3 1/2 miles, anti-fencing surrounding the wells fargo center at the property. this is one of the streets that the fence will separate wells fargo center from lincoln financial field. the police department's responsibility will be outside of the perimeter, while the secret service, the fbi, state police will all support them in that capacity, as well as police agencies from the surrounding communities. but the secret service took primary responsibility to secure the event as well as the dignitaries coming into the philadelphia area and wells fargo center noon on saturday. that is a time to remember. that is when street closures for fencing and outer barriers will start to take effect, as well as no center median parking on south broad street. this is the secret service and national security event and police agencies from all over the country, as well as from

hollywood loses another legend. gary marshall is dead at the age of 81. marshall brought us heads like laverne and shirley, "happy days," and "pretty woman." he was also an actor appearing in more than 80 tv shows and films including "a league of their own" a film directed by

his sister, penny marshall. people are leaving tributes at the hollywood walk of fame. fans left roses as they walked by, and in a statement his publicist said marshall died from complications from pneumonia after having a stroke. it once housed thousands of artifacts from the september 11th attacks, but as of today, hangar 17 at jfk international airport is closed. yesterday a solemn her money was held as the last of the artifacts were loaded on a truck and taken to new sites around the world. the hangar will be demolished in a few months. space x delivered more than two tons of supplies to the international space station today. the dragon capsule arrived two days after blasting off from cape canaveral. onboard is a docking port that will be used by crew capsules still under development by space x and boeing. the capsules should start flying next year. coming up next, helping two lives with one bond.

once again, a live look inside the quicken loans arena in cleveland, ohio, home to the republican national convention. the official business getting under way. a little later this evening. but this afternoon, plenty to talk about. joining me is our gop analyst jim schultz. thank you for being here again, jim. melania trump's speech, a staffer has taken the fall. she offered to resign but trump said no. now we're hearing how this went down. i spoke with chuck todd today, and he said the campaign's handling of this has been a disaster, in his words, because of the mixed messages we've been hearing about what actually happened with the crafting of that speech. do you agree? >> look, it's very easy to monday morning quarterback these types of situations after the fact. but the bottom line is, the trump campaign needed to acknowledge a mistake has

well, comfortable today. it's all because of the low humidity. and our temperatures are down, too. mostly in the mid-80s right now. if you look at your seven-day forecast at the bottom of your jean, you'll see friday, saturday, sunday and monday are all outlined in red. dangerous heat heading our way. we'll talk about that in a second, but right now it's very comfortable most of the area sitting in the mid-80ings. delaware neighborhoods, marshalton coming in 89 degrees. wilmington 84. odessa 83 degrees. if you're in kent county, temperatures mostly in the low 80s. 82 dover. allendale coming in 82 degrees. if you're along the beaches in delaware and sussex county, we have a bit of an onshore wind. that's giving the temperatures here mid-70s. very comfortable outside. tomorrow, the heat and the humidity come back. temperatures will be back into the 90s, mostly the low 90s.

here's what it will look like through the afternoon. reading # 2 degrees tomorrow. pennsylvania suburbs mostly in the low 90s. 91 degrees in newtown. in the philadelphia area, expect 90 degrees. increase in humidity across the area. atlantic city 87 degrees. if you're in dover, 87. wilmington coming in at 91 degrees tomorrow. the humidity is going up friday and through the weekend. dangerous heat friday through monday. temperatures will feel around 100 degrees, with the humidity. here's what it looks like. friday, 96 degrees, feeling like 100. saturday, 98, feeling like 101, or hotter. sunday, 99 as well as monday. there are days where parts of the area could get at 100 degrees actual temperature. humidity, closer to 105. this is dangerous heat heading our way. and it's going to be several days of it, too.
