donald trump himself landed here in cleveland this afternoon. he appeared at a rally with his vp running mate, mike pence. melania trump was not at that rally. but her speech from two nights ago remains in the spotlight. today we learned it was a staffer who is taking the blame. and we just learned she is a registered democrat. >> you work hard for what you want in life. that your word is your bond, that you do what you say. >> for two days the trump campaign insisted any similarities between melania trump's speech and a 2008 speech by michelle obama were purely coincidental. but now a trump organization staff writer has come forward, to take responsibility. meredith mciver released a statement revealing what she says happened. mciver said, over the phone mrs. trump read me some passages from mrs. obama's speech as examples. i later included some of the phrasing in the draft that ultimately became the final

speech. this was my mistake. and i feel terrible for the chaos i have caused melania and the trumps as well as mrs. obama. no harm was meant, end quote. donald trump put a positive spin on the speech on twitter. he tweeted, quote, good news is melania's speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics, especially if you believe all press is good press, end quote. but when i spoke to number's chuck todd of "meet the press," he had a different analysis. >> it's a disaster how they handled it. the champagne manager for the party, they've now been rendered totally untrustworthy and not credible. they gave explanations that didn't jive with the actual truth. >> reporter: now the questions about melania trump's speech, another big question remains, will trump's former rival ted cruz endorse trump. the texas senator set to speak to the delegates tonight.

here's a look at some of the speakers tonight, marco rubio, via video, and as we mentioned ted cruz. donald trump's other son eric and vice presidential nominee mike pence, introducing himself to americans. the theme for tonight, make america first again. each night has had one of those themes. the speakers will start in less than an hour from now. joining me is lauren mayk. you've been talking to delegates out there, and what mike pence has to do tonight. what can we expect? >> they're waiting to see what they can expect. i'll tell you, jim, he is popular with the base. and really that's who you're going to find down there on the floor at conventions like this. one delegate told me that mike pence is who he was rooting for to get this job. i caught up with a number of our delegates today to get their take on it. tonight the stage is set for the introduction of donald trump's new number two.

indiana governor mike pence. he'll introduce himself to the nation. but delegates are already paying close attention. >> donald trump's an outsider. he really wants to change washington. but to do that, i think you do need a balance of someone who has been there and knows the system a little bit. >> reporter: i sat down with delegates from philadelphia to talk about the man whose resume is congressman and governor. >> mike pence is a key addition. and i think it was an important insight into how donald trump is going to make decisions as a commander in chief, as a leader. >> reporter: the audience here at the convention are party insiders. local officials, world leaders. the party base glad to add pence's conservative reputation to the ticket. and for some still not convinced donald trump is the right one for the top of that ticket, things like a peek at the supreme court ticket -- >> those are tangible things that if they keep doing that, i could be swayed come november.

>> reporter: that last delegate, he is not actually sure he will vote for donald trump in the general election. he was the lone holdout voting for ted cruz for the pennsylvania delegation. i'll tell you, there was another delegate who i talked to who said it was the choice of mike pence that convinced him to come onboard with donald trump. just days ago. >> the trump campaign has to hope that those kinds of decisions and pence coming onboard helps others make their minds up coming up in november, who may not yet be aboard with donald trump. >> they said it helps them make the case. >> lauren mayk, you'll be with me at 7:00 for the one-hour special. and tracy davidson goes one on one with rudy giuliani. tomorrow night, the final night of the convention. and that is when we will hear from donald trump himself. that's the latest live from here in cleveland. let's send it back out to philadelphia. jack, i know you'll be talking about the dnc coming to philly next week, jackie.

>> one week from now, we'll be positioned in philadelphia with the same backdrop you have. tonight we're getting new details about the security plan and protesters ahead of next week's dnc here in philadelphia. police and members of the dnc host committee are addressing concerns from south philly residents right now. aundrea cline-thomas joins us from south philadelphia. what did you find out? >> reporter: inside there are council members, dnc reps, members of law enforcement, they're here right now. this is where local residents can come and ask their questions. and also, voice their concerns before all of the plans are finalized. joe and his friends always hang out in fdr park in south philly. next week when the democratic national convention is in town -- >> we'd have to find somewhere to go. >> reporter: the park will be filled with protesters, residents are having to alter their plans all in the name of security. >> crazy down here.

i don't even want to come down here. >> reporter: drivers are already being warned they'll get towed if they park in the median on south broad street starting this sunday. and fencing is going up to create a security perimeter around the wells fargo center. >> we'll have probably more security that's going to be in that part of south philadelphia than they've ever seen. >> reporter: local, state and federal law enforcement are working together. 50,000 people are expected to participate in the convention. up to 50,000 more are expected to protest every day. >> there's always going to be pop-up protests. those are the ones that are the wild cards. you don't know exactly how they're going to go. >> reporter: the law enforcement said it's trained and ready for the crowds. councilman johnson hopes his constituents are, too. >> we'll make it a priority, but if you have a neighbor living in a stadium district that your quality of life will still move forward, smoothly, while we have the democratic national convention. >> reporter: commissioner ross said he is the philadelphia

police is in constant contact with law enforcement in cleveland. they continue to monitor the situation over there. at the republican national convention. they're hoping that it gives them insight into what may happen here in philadelphia. and also, lets them know they need to change their plans getting ready for the dnc. reporting live in south philly, nbc 10 news. debra messing appeared in montgomery county in philadelphia. she spoke to a women's round table to rally the female vote for clinton. hillary clinton has kept a low profile today. clinton could be just a few days away from naming her running mate. that announcement is expected as early as this weekend before the convention. it was the perfect day for an afternoon run, or jog along

hours. stay hydrated. it is going to be dangerously hot. coming up we'll take a look at this forecast and also what you can expect. new at 6:00, $3,000 worth of coffee stolen from wawa. the police released these pictures of the woman accused of several backs of coffee, about 50 different times from wawa stores in pennsylvania, delaware, and new jersey. thoe say she takes the coffee, then goes to another store and returns it for cash. several times she's worn scrubs and police think she could be a traveling health care worker. the deal is done. shareholders for dupont and dow chemical approved the merger, and breaking the company up into three parts. that merger was first announced in december. regulators still have to approve it. that can happen by the end of the year. the new company will be the second largest chemicals company in the world. tonight wilmington police

west wildwood sergeant jim dodd. >> in such an uncertain time, it's nice to know the community is here to care for us. >> thank you for your outstanding service. >> reporter: at the cape may county law enforcement memorial, members of the community group the women of wildwood gave 80 of these special visor clips to all four police departments in the wildwoods for their vehicles. >> dear god, protect these men and women. >> reporter: the clips contain a police officer's prayer, group members were driven to get them while watching news coverage of the deadly police ambush in dallas. >> we just really want them to look at that and know that there are people out here who really support them, that they protect our families, our children. >> it's nice to be recognized. even with a small memento like this, it means so much more. >> reporter: in manchester township, blue lights are beaming from houses, the result of a facebook post from the mayor asking residents to support and thank local police officers.

that's going to change, though, tomorrow and friday. look what future temperatures does. we have a lot of hot air and humidity across a big portion of the country. that's going to move in. and across the weekend, it will be here, and even starting out next week. so this is what we expect. temperature-wise, 96 as we go into friday. these are the days we expect it to feel over 100 degrees. so as we go into friday, feeling like 100, saturday 101 or hotter. sunday and monday feeling around 105 degrees. this is dangerous heat. you want to avoid several hours outside. at the same time. and we're telling you to stay hydrated, stay in the shade, stay cool, never leave animals and children in the car. and check on the elderly. not much in the way of rain relief heading our way, especially now we're nice and dry. showers in the southern parts of sussex county. but tomorrow we stay dry, too, at temperatures get back into the 90s. 92 for fairmont. if you're in easton, 90 and mostly sunny. if you're in new jersey, eastern

township, 91 degrees. avalon, 92. delaware, expect temperatures around 91 degrees. staying sunny. nothing really in the way of rain relief as we go into the weekend. at best we could have a pop-up shower, but i think most of the area is just going to stay dry and hot and humid. feeling like triple digits. same thing for the pennsylvania suburbs. lehigh valley, south jersey, delaware. if you're along the shore temperatures will be right around 90 degrees and humid. so everybody's going to be heating up. this will be a first alert going through the weekend. take a look through the weekend. only monday we have that better chance of showers in the forecast. still very hot. and even into next week, this is going to be a prolonged heat wave. so make sure you're aware it's going to be very hot. don't make those plans where you're outside several hours at a time. john? the eagles open training camp monday in that heat.

fighting cancer since december. her ipad is her lifeline. over the weekend it disappeared from her hospital room. the parents contacted police. when they showed up at the hospital they had an ipad. they did not find it. one of the officers wanted to give ariana his. >> they don't know the extent of what she's been going through. they did something so incredibly kind. and they showed a perfect example of how everyone should treat each other. they really did. >> ariana is battling a rare form of leukemia. tonight something to smile about for ariana and her family. that ipad is a great escape for her. so glad she has that. >> she's a cuty pie. going to get hot as we go into the weekend. so remember that tomorrow, we're going to get hotter, more humid, 92 degrees. friday, saturday and sunday, even monday, no rain relief until maybe monday. chance of scattered showers or storms. this is a prolonged heat wave.
