as he prepares for the biggest speech of his campaign so far. and his best chance yet to make the case to the american public for why he should be elected president. trump's first appearance on the stage monday night featured a dramatic entrance. will we see something similar tonight? peter alexander has covered the campaign every step of the way and he tells me he thinks we should expect the unexpected. >> we've been mapping out all scenario scenarios. we had a camera locked down as they were hoopening a trap dono. can you imagine if there's a silhouette of donald trump rising from beneath the stage? >> as we were saying donald trump's drawer ivanka will be introducing her father. she wants to focus on her father's character and talk about what she sees as his presidential qualities, and my colleague lauren mayk is joining

me now. you've been speaking to delegates all week long. what are they saying about what they want to hear from him tonight? >> jim, every delegate who is out there has issues that are personal to them. things that they want to hear about tonight to give them that connection to their nominee. but they also told me that they want to hear about him unifying everyone who has different issues, who has different opinions. but, of course, as you mentioned, this is donald trump. so we will be watching very, very carefully. do you even know what to expect with donald trump? >> no. it seems like it's the unexpected is expected with him. >> reporter: some local delegates will take their seats at the q with some insider information. they got a glimpse of the speech from vice presidential nominee mike pence during a stop to see pennsylvania delegates. >> you'll hear tonight our republican nominee will lay out a vision for america. he'll lay out the choice. he'll lay out the stakes in this election.

>> reporter: the theme for tonight is make america one again. delegates told nbc 10 they hope to hear about the economy, national security, and unity. >> it was certainly an interesting primary over the last year and kind of bringing those points into the speech tonight to talk about the unity and show gratitude through the process. everybody in the building all started in different places probably a year ago and now we're here together for donald trump and mike pence. >> reporter: a nominee who has run an unconventional campaign getting ready to cap off the rnc. >> they will surprise us, i'm sure. >> reporter: that's the one thing folks are counting on, that there will be some sort of surprise. we know donald trump has a speech written, but what we don't know is whether he will stick to it. he has had speeches written other times and just goes off the cuff, starts to ad lib for sections of it. so there may be more to it. >> this is not a free wheeling rally. this is the convention and the

acceptance speech, so perhaps he'll stick to that script a little bit more. >> but it's his convention so who knows. >> keep reminding ourselves of that. he's donald trump. the talk of the day also about senator cruz's speech from last night and how he didn't endorse donald trump. he was booed off the stage last night. well, today cruz defended himself and said he would not commit to voting for trump into september. >> i'm doing what millions of americans are doing. i'm watching. i'm listening, and as i told you last night, the standard that i intend to apply is which candidate i trust to defend our freedom and be faithful to the constitution. i can tell you i'm not voting for hillary. cruz said he told trump three days before the speech that he wouldn't endorse him and the trump campaign did acknowledge they saw the speech and he was invited to continue to come out here as he did last night.

now, how important is pennsylvania in november? you can tell it's a key battleground state by which candidates and which individuals in the party, big names, went to those delegation breakfasts from donald trump jr. to vice presidential nominee mike pence to the pennsylvania delegation. >> not only is it our objective to elect donald trump the 45th president of the united states of america but we're going to win pennsylvania when we do it. >> tonight gets under way at 7:30. we do hear from other speakers before ivanka and donald trump. some of those will include oklahoma governor mary fallin and jerry falwell jr. and then join lauren and tracy and myself for our 7:00 special from cleveland, ohio. we'll be featuring two young women delegates from our area at the rnc. that's right after "nbc nightly

news." for now that's the latest live from cleveland as we get set for tonight's events to get under way. i'll send it back to you, jacqueline, in philadelphia. >> the drama has been building each and every night. all eyes on tonight's convention to see what the finale will enta entail. to breaking news, a woman was severely beaten and found dead in her bedroom. police went to her home after a report of a missing person. they found her at the home on north percy street. police did not find a weapon, and so far no arrests. to a developing story out of florida, passengers on an american airlines plane from west palm beach to philly had to evacuate. this happened two hours ago. there was a possible fuel leak. passengers used slides to get off that plane. more than a dozen people went to the hospital with burning eyes, itchy skin and a hard time breathing. thousands of people will soon travel to philadelphia for the democratic national convention. many of those will be protesters looking to get their message

out. there are marches planned that could affect your travel plans. deanna durante is joining us live from city hall. the countdown to the dnc is on. >> reporter: the city says right now it's limiting permanent closures to the stadium areas but says due to protests planned in center city, some rolling closures may be possible. >> we're not fighting for one individual cause we think is important. we're not even necessarily fighting for bernie sanders. we're fighting for clean water, for access to quality education, access to quality health care. >> reporter: and they're taking the fight to the streets literally. >> how is a march going to be disruptive? >> billy taylor says his group plans nightly rallies at fdr park and he's planning on bringing thousands to broad street for a sunday night march. >> didn't think about that. >> reporter: neil warren figured his biggest battle would be delegates and traffic from the convention, not traffic-stopping

protests. now he's thinking even septa is going to be crowded. >> it's going to be rough trying to get in the city every day. whether you're taking the bus or just riding. and if you can get a spot. >> reporter: many figured they would be untouched by the dnc but the protesters are looking to grab some attention. >> people have to go to work, have to go to school, people have other things to do. i mean, yeah, if they want to protest, go protest. everybody's voice should be heard. >> reporter: for security reasons streets will be closed around the wells fargo center and some ramps to 95 will be closed starting friday night and they won't reopen until next friday afternoon. the city says the convention will bring the same amount of visitors to the city as the annual army/navy game but the numbers could easily grow. >> you're talking possibly over a quarter million. >> reporter: now, the city is not talking about those numbers just yet. they do say that there is some good news.

some of the construction cones you see throughout the city could be removed. penndot says construction work will stop during the duration of the convention so traffic can move more smoothly. in less than two hours a light show will start at 30th street station to welcome visitors. red, white, and blue lights will brighten up the facade of the train station and that will last ten days. more 60 elected officials will speak at the dnc before hillary clinton takes the stage one week from tonight. there are several local speakers, including philadelphia mayor jim kenney. hillary clinton's camp is already planning a post-dnc event. clinton will hold a rally for the public on independence mall friday. many people are heading to the shore this weekend. we were hoping to give you a live picture down in cape may. maybe we'll get that for you a little later. i can tell you it's beautiful at

cape may. along the shore is a place you can get a little relief from the excessive heat. let's go to sheena parveen with our forecast. >> jacqueline, you know, this weekend the water is going to be the place to be. first alert is out for pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware, and if you look at your seven-day right at the bottom of the screen, you will see that we have highlighted friday through monday in red, and that's because of the first alert. so that is going to be out friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. we have several days of 90 degree temperatures in the forecast. a prolonged heat wave, and with the humidity it's going to feel anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. this is dangerous heat. you want to avoid several hours outside. you want to stay hydrated. stay in the shade and never leave children or animals in the car. look as we go through friday. temperatures mid-90s. more humidity than today. feeling around 100 degrees. saturday and sunday upper 90s, feeling around 105.

that is going to last into the beginning of next week. but we expect these 90s to continue for a while. so i'll show you that forecast as well as any rain chances heading our way with your weekend weather and your shore forecast come up. a big economic loss for a south jersey community. workers of the progressive soup plant found out they may be out of work next summer. general mills told 370 employees at a morning meeting and then sent everyone out. it wants to eliminate excess soups. employees were caught off-guard. >> nobody seen this coming. this is going to affect so many people in vineland, especially there's so many couples here that work so both of them are going to lose their jobs. >> shock. definitely shock. everyone is scared now. we can't believe that this happened. >> the company still has to negotiate with the union after it recently agreed to a

>> there's a new leader in charge at temple university. today neil theobald resigned hours before the board meeting. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins live with the shake-up on campus. >> reporter: today temple's board of trustees accepting the resignation of one president and almost immediately hiring another with the goal of keeping the ship steady as this university grows bigger and bigger. it's a school on the up and up. temple seeing a record number of applicants and a suddenly successful football team. but behind the scenes scandal and shake-ups. today a new president stepping in promising to keep momentum going. >> that continues. that has continued. it continues going forward. >> reporter: richard englert was hired this afternoon, a long-time temple employee. he was shaking hands after the unanimous vote. >> our focus will be on opening school in august and september and really making certain that

we're off to a good start. >> reporter: the school's former president resigned earlier today. dr. neil theobald agreeing to a resignation package, forced out after the discovery of a $22 million gap in the budget. >> the fact there was a $22 million deficit, that's a significant shortfall, and the board's concern was both the amount and the fact that it was unaware of the deficit. >> reporter: the change in leadership could also affect plans for a future football stadium. the former president was a big supporter, but now that he's gone, stadium opponents are hoping it gets scrapped entirely. they protested outside the board meeting this afternoon. >> and so we're just here to remind the board of trustees that, you know, we're not going away. we're going to continue raising our voices until this stadium plan is abandoned. >> reporter: we did ask temple's new president whether he has an opinion. he says right now he does not have an opinion whether that stadium should be built but he said more studies need to be

done to determine the impact to the community. the local lgbt community is hosting a fund-raiser. it's called philly for pulse and it starts tonight. it will go to the families of the victims killed last month at a popular lgbt club. police sharpened they're skills on how to deal with an active shooter situation with help from a virtual reality training program. while the weapons they're firing aren't real, the situations they encounter on the screens in front of them are. >> you have a tenth of a second. i mean, it's that quick that things can happen. you have to make a decision and be able to react within the time period that can save your life or another person's life. >> some of the scenarios the

officers experienced included a shooting at a school and another inside a movie theater. turning to this now. clear the shelters is just two days away. it's nbc's mission to get as many animals adopted on saturday as possible. tonight we focus on rescue animals. wet nose rescue in north philly is 100% volunteer. the group works with a shelter down in south carolina. the dogs end up coming here and going to a foster home first so they can learn what it's like to be in a loving home. so what makes an animal a rescue? >> take care of dogs and puppies that have lost their homes through no fault of their own. whether it be through a natural disaster or a family that may have ended up financially not able to take care of a dog or possibly a death in the family. >> wet nose rescue has been around for more than eight years. they're looking for more foster

families. on saturday participating shelters around the region will waive the adoption fees. find out which shelter is closest to you on nbc10.com or our app. sheena, it's going to be extremely hot saturday. if you adopt a dog or cat, there's really a lot to keep in mind to keep them safe. >> yes. the one thing especially first time adopters because i will be out there saturday morning throughout the morning show showcasing a lot of animals available, one thing for first-time adopters, you cannot leave an animal in the car in this heat if you're going to be maybe running to the pet store to grab stuff. take them home first. we have a first alert out across the weekend. it's going to be way too hot. dangerously hot. that heat will start to move in tomorrow. in the meantime, we're in the mid to upper 80s across the area. philadelphia coming in 88 degrees. right now we're a little hotter than yesterday. cochranville, 88. west chester, 86. malvern near 90. chester heights, your temperature is 84.

montgomery county, 88. new hope at 86 right now in bucks county. the first alert is out for pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware because of the dangerous heat expected to be around friday through monday. now, this is the time frame where temperatures will feel like anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees which is why at the very bottom of the screen there your seven-day shows those four days highlighted in red. that's because of the first alert so that you are aware that it's going to be dangerously hot. we have an excessive heat watch out for everyone. this goes until sunday evening because of the heat and humidity that will be around, and it's that combination that makes it feel like triple digits. so the dangerous heat is the weather story. it's going to last into the start of next week. here is our future feels-like temperatures. we go into tomorrow afternoon. look at that, feeling a lot hotter than today. temperatures will be feeling around 100 degrees tomorrow. try to avoid several hours

outside. stay in the shade, stay cool, stay hydrated. check on the elderly. now looking at saturday afternoon and evening, anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. that's what it's going to feel like and this dangerous heat will last into monday. very little rain relief in the forecast. this is showing tomorrow afternoon and evening, possibly an isolated shower. there's a slight chance of that. but as we go into saturday, we're going to be sunny, hot, and humid. no rain relief saturday. no rain relief sunday. and there are some showers moving in monday but we have certainly enough time to be heating up to the mid to upper 90s by then. your shore forecast, 90 both saturday and sunday. in wildwood temperatures will be in the low 90s, possibly right around 90 degrees. especially along the shore it will be a hot one. in cape may expect temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. the rest of the area as we go from tomorrow into the weekend, mid to upper 90s. feeling like triple digits. make sure you stay hydrated and wear the sun block.
