i humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the president sieve the united states. cheers and a standing ovation in cleveland as donald trump addressed the republican national convention. history-making speech by the numbers, trump's 75 minute prime time address was the longest convention speech since the early 1970s. and the spotlight is officially on the city of philadelphia now. the democratic national convention begins next week and in just hours, we will get a first look inside the transformed wells fargo center. nbc 10 news starts now.

>> good morning, it's friday, welcome to "nbc 10 news today." it's just 4:00 a.m. i'm katy zachry, thanks for joining is. we have issued a first alert because of the dangerous heat ahead. let's get right to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast. a close look, bill, at communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. >> katy, good morning. yes, it will be a steamy one today. that's why we issued a first alert for pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, friday through the weekend, even on monday. that's where it will feel as hot as 100 degrees plus during the day today. right now, take a look at this. 60s for the suburbs, 70 in new jersey and 75 in philadelphia, into the 90s this afternoon. we'll also be watching for strong storms later today. back with your hour-by-hour look for the forecast for today. right now let's see how the traffic is looking on a friday morning. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> thank you, bill. we're starting off through center city on a good note, of

course. we don't have construction on the vine street expressway. these are cameras around 24th street. no problem heading towards the schuylkill, no problem headed towards 95. all lanes open in both directions. typically it's closed between broad street and the schuylkill expressway. watching the rest of our drive times, no problems into center city from the schuylkill. in problems for the blue route this morning. southbound from the schuylkill to 95 is a 16-minute trip and already on time, or at least for now for septa, patco, d.a.r.t. and new jersey transit. we'll check in with more of your area roads when i come back. and we will make america great again! god bless you and good night. i love you. >> donald trump accepts the republican nomination for president and the arena in

with applause. his acceptance speech was one of the longest in decades. he touched on everything with what he plans to do if he eek d -- elected president to taking shots at democratic rival hillary clinton. are you going to break down the 75 minutes for us? >> not all 75 minutes but i'll try to get a couple excerpts in there. >> he said he will restore law and order. it was the longest acceptance speech by a party nominee in decades. he pledged as president, he will restore safety, curb immigration and save the nation from hillary clinton's record of what he called death, destruction, terrorism and weakness. >> the most important difference between our plan and that of our opponent's is that our plan will put america first.

>> and at that point the crowd you see broke out into applause and chapters of "usa, usa." he said he will also make america rich again by lowering trade deals, lessening taxes to grow the middle class. he reinforced his position to build a wall. while trump was speaking presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton tweeted out a picture of this sticker, it says no way, no how, no trump. she commented as of tonight, only one thing is standing between donald trump and the presidency, all of us. get your free sticker. they plan to meet with supporters before leaving cleveland and they'll head back out on to the campaign trail. live in the digital operations

center, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> this is the most exciting i've seen the gop, we're rallying, we're focused and going forward to november 8th to beat hillary clinton. >> that's reaction from the trump speech from mike mcmullen. he and other pennsylvania delegates say they are energized for the fight ahead. the trump family affair continued last night. trump's daughter ivanka took to the podium as the last speaker before her father's acceptance speech. the 34-year-old mother of three touted her father's business acumens and strength and fairness as a leader. her most important role is to try to convince women voters that her father is the right person for the job. >> there have always been ethnicities on the job sites.

and long before it was common place, you also saw woman. my father values talent, recognizes real knowledge and skill when he finds it. he is color blind and gender neutral. >> nbc 10 is partnering with fact check.org for both political conventions. tap the nbc 10 app to see what we found when we checked the speech at the rnc. check back next week when we fact check what is said at the dnc. with the rnc now in the history books, it is time for democrats to take center stage right here in philadelphia. let's take a live look right now at the wells fargo center in south philadelphia where the democratic national convention committee will officially unveil the stage and podium later this morning. philadelphia mayor jim kenney will be there to take ahead to next week and point out that the dnc plans are on time and on budget. now, here's a look at the faces you'll see at that dnc

podium, pennsylvania governor tom wolf will speak, so will philadelphia mayor jim kenney and new jersey senator corey booker. along with pennsylvania congressmen brendan boyle and bob brady. hows of volunteers have spent months preparing for the dnc and there's more hard work and long days ahead. yesterday, the host committee shared their appreciation to the volunteers by throwing them a party at penn's landing, complete with live music, food and games. philadelphia will host 50,000 dnc delegate visitors and protesters next week. that will affect roads and parking. broad street south of packer avenue will close. streets around fdr park and the wells fargo center will also close. on sunday, the city will begin towing cars. however the impact won't just be on south philadelphia. it will also be felt throughout center city and outside of the city limits. >> it's going to shall rough trying to get into the city

every day, whether you're taking the bus or rying in, if you can get a spot. >> one bright spot, though, penndot says construction zones like the vine street expressway will be clear of workers during the convention to allow traffic to move easier through center city. nbc 10 is planning extensive coverage of the democratic national convention beginning this weekend. we'll report live african si-- from inside the democratic national convention. just like the rnc, we will air a live nightly special at 7:00. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 75 degrees in philadelphia right now. this is a look at what's going on. a live view from the adventure aquarium. we're expecting the temperatures to climb with bright sunshine. the winds become southwesterly. that's a 10 mile-an-hour wind at 10:00, 84 degrees. that will bring up the heat and humidity during the day today. we're heading into the 90s.

sunshine for the suburbs, 70s to start with, low 80s. that's by 10:00. low 90s by 2:00 this afternoon. the lehigh valley, clear to start with, not as cool as yesterday when it was in the low 60s at this hour, 68 degrees now. 70s to start with. look at those temperatures soaring into the upper 80s by noontime, into the 90s this afternoon. a few clouds later today. we'll be watching for storms later this afternoon and into this evening. dry to start with in new jersey, 83 degrees at 10:00. into the 90s this afternoon and it will feel, thanks to higher humidity today, like it's in the upper 90s today. at the shore, even a big warmup there with the winds stronger at the shore. southwesterly 17 mile-an-hour wind, boost the temperatures and bring up the humidity. 7 75 degrees right now. if you'll do exercising this morning, the sooner the better. as you can see, a quick warmup.

delaware is in store for 83 degrees. by the afternoon, 90s, with wind at 13 miles an hour. that will be a warm, muggy wind. after the 4:00 hour, we'll be looking at storms in the area. i'll take a look at that threat when i'm back in just a few minutes. katy? >> see you then. thanks so much. 4:10 on your friday. if you're headed out the door early this morning for your ride to work or maybe you're headed to the shore, jessica boyington is standing by with a look at what you can expect. >> right, katy. we're starting off on 95 around girard avenue. no problems or delays so far. that's not a surprise because it's so early. southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, moving into center city, still ç 13-minute trip there. that's what we're looking at right here, the southbound lanes. northbound, the ramp to cottman avenue is closed for construction. it will typically re-open in the morning commute. 22 minutes west or eastbound

welcome back. we begin now with more coverage of the final night of the republican national convention in cleveland. an openly gay man addressed delegates at the rnc. he is billionaire peter thiel. he admonished the gop for refusing to embrace lgbt rights. thiel also warned the party against fighting unnecessary culture wars. the paypal co-founder brought the crowd to his feet when heç became the first speaker in party history to say this. >> am proud to be gay. i am proud to be a republican, but most of all, i am proud to be an american! >> thiel drew a parallel between himself and trump saying both men are builders and trump is the best candidate to rebuild america. ♪

>> you just want that the to keep going, right? despite all the drama at the rnc, this 5-year-old from galloway township ultimately stole the show. you might remember 5-year-old joy jerkins. wait until you hear the rest of her performance ahead. the family of a 49-year-old woman found beaten to death in her bedroom is urging the person who killed her to turn themselves in. the mother and grandmother was found dead in her bedroom yesterday in hunting park. her family gathered on north percy street. she was always volunteering at her church, the family tells us. >> if you were in need and it was something that you needed, she would do it. >> to grip some of the things mentally in your head that just happened to my mother-in-law,

one can't sleep for a week or two. >> there is a surveillance camera on the neighbor's house for across the street. the family says they think they might know who did this. a carjacker did not get very far after stealing a car from a valet attendant. police say the guy took off in the stolen car but then rear ended someone at broad and carpenter streets. that's where officers arrested him. speaking of driving, here's something to keep in mind as you're driving to work this morning. philadelphia has some of the worst drivers in the country. every year allstate insurance puts out a list of america's best drivers. for the third year in a row, philadelphia drivers are ranked the eighth worse in america. according to the report, boston has the worst drivers and kansas city has the best. it's 4:16 now and this

weekend, nbc 10 is clearing the shelters and we need your help in doing this. we're working with local shelters to find pets forever homes like this pair of dogs you're about to see. meet kate and blue. they became orphaned after their owner in west virginia was killed. she was electrocuted in historic flooding in june when she went into her basement to retrieve photo albums. a family friend brought the dogs to our shelter. they are being fostered out in pottstown but they need to find a home together. >> they love to just kind of do what he's doing, lay down and just be in the shade, maybe when it's less warm, they'll like to sun themselves a little more. >> i met those dogs. they are really sweet. moyer says it's extremely

difficult to find a home for two dogs together but it was the wish of their late owner. help pets like kate and blue, more than 3,000 animals will be available tomorrow at 35 local shelters and adoption fees will be waived. you do need to bring your implgs d. and other things with you, though. we have a list of what you'll need and a list of the shelters participating on our nbc 10 app. click cde@r the shelters. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> 18 minutes after 4:00. and the temperatures are falling at this hour. once the sun comes up we'll see them soar today. even above yesterday's levels when it got near 90 degrees in philadelphia. the city, 75 degrees. clear skies for the lehigh valley. 68 degrees. it will fall into the 60s for the suburbs, 70 degrees right now. delaware is at 73 degrees and a warmer start for south jersey. it's going to be a hot afternoon, even at the shore, the temperatures will be reaching toward the 90 degree mark today.

80s easily, 73 degrees right now. in philadelphia, there are cooler neighborhoods but all of these locations are in the 70s this morning, parkside is 1 while it's 75 at philadelphia international. fox chase and bustleton at northeast philadelphia airport. both in the middle 70s, cooler in somerton. this is our starting point. might come down another degree or two but the temperatures will be tapering off this afternoon. we're heading into dangerous heat for today and especially this weekend when the temperatures go even higher for pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. the friday through monday and beyond will feel the heat. the highest heat will come with high humidity, combine the two and you'll get feels like temperatures of 100 to 105 over the next few days. today, it will get very close to that 100 degree mark. starting off in the 70s but once the sun comes up and the humidity will be building with southwesterly winds, you see the departure here. this is the actual temperature

we're expecting. high temperatures into the middle 90s. 94 degrees. by about 3:00 in the afternoon. with a higher humidity it will feel more like 100 degrees at the peak this afternoon and starting to cool down a little bit by late this afternoon. but once it starts cooling down, there's another problem we're looking for and that is a chance of showers and thunderstorms. you won't see them this morning. we're in the clear this morning. you can see the line of showers off to the northwest and moving through the midwest. this is part of the system that will threaten us with late-day storms that could be strong. hour by hour forecast, showers at 1:30, a chance of scattered showers in central pennsylvania and into the lehigh valley and some of the suburbs, that first round of showers is a possibility. the next one could be stronger by late this afternoon and this evening. those storms moving into the area. we'll be watching the skies later today and watching the temperatures as well. and they'll really be getting
