you" saying not included, women, african-americans, lgbt people, muslims, latinos and immigrants. matt and savannah, 3 1/2 months until the election. 72 hours until the democrats take the stage. >> here we go again. peter, thank you very much. >> let's turn to nicole wallace and chuck todd. a late night. we were all there. it seems like the speech was well received in the room. how do you think it was received in the living room? >> i think they saw a leader in that room. there's a lag in digesting what he said. reading coverage this morning it's clear that where gop voters are now is not where they've been for the last two decades. i said last night the party i was a part of for two decades died in that room last night. they want this isolationism and protectism that mr. trump offers. >> what do you think? >> i don't think he broadened his appeal. i don't know how many people -- there are people that wake up

and say, wow, the country is deteriorating but a lot of people didn't recognize that country that he described either. i think it's a very polarizing speech. >> this wasn't the shining city on the hill. this wasn't morning in america. he sounded like a wartime president last night. >> very dark. you're just used to -- even when we've had difficult elections where we feel like we've hit bottom, whoever is running is trying to have a sunny atmosphere. have a sunny personality. that was not there at all. now, maybe the electorate is going to respond to that. >> what he's been so masterful at doing is speaking to people's anxieties but where he's fallen short time and time again is laying out a solution for getting us to a better place. that was true of last night as well. >> he's betting that what we've seen over the last three weeks is what we'll see over the next

three months. >> didn't seem it was a convention about tried and true general election pivot. it does seem that he's still talking to republican base voters and is that because that's what this election is going to be? less about the middle anymore and more about turn out your people on both sides? >> it's because it was on his to-do list. he needed to bring the republican party together. he didn't arrive -- hillary clinton is going to arrive at her convention having for the most part united the democratic party behind her. he hadn't done that yet. i think he did achieve that this week. >> best moment of the rnc and worst? >> i'll pick the same moment. ted cruz. best and worst. it was worse because the party was not united coming out. >> best moment for donald trump was his daughter softening these rough edges around him. for me the most uncomfortable

hours, the buzz is mounting about virginia senator tim kaine today. >> are we ready for hillary? >> reporter: a former governor who also has national security experience, kaine emerged as the front runner. some progressives accuse him of being too pro-trade and soft on wall street. on thursday, kaine kept his cards close to the vest. >> i'm a happy senator and not looking for another job. >> reporter: there are other big names in the running including agriculture secretary tomvil vilsack. he deflected questions. >> i'm here to talk about an issue i care deeply about. >> reporter: there are questions about vilsack's ability to rally

young voters. cory booker has the same resume but is known for his impassioned rhetoric and bold thinking as new york's favorite mayor. kate snow asked booker on whether he plans to campaign with clinton today in florida. >> florida is not on the agenda. >> reporter: clinton is choosing from a crowded field which has included labor secretary tom perez and massachusetts senator and trump attack dog elizabeth warren. >> let's be really, really clear. donald trump does not have the answers. >> reporter: the clinton campaign hoping to grab headlines with the announcement now that the republican convention is over and all eyes are on philadelphia where it's the democrats turn to take the stage. and clinton's main goal at her convention will be to counter some of the attacks leveled at her this past week. also, she's going to try to win over those important undecided

game out of charlotte, north carolina, over concerns about that state's controversial bathroom bill. that legislation mandates that transgender individuals use bathrooms that correspond to gender on their birth certificates and blocks other anti-discrimination practices. the all-star game could be held in charlotte in 2019, if "there's an appropriate resolution to this matter." a new location for the 2017 game will be announced in the coming weeks. that massive heat dome trapping 118 million americans in 26 states under a blanket of near triple digit temperatures. it could make for a tough weekend across much of the country. nbc's blake mccoy is in chicago. he has more on all this. blake, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. behind me you can see a lot of runners and bikers out early trying to beat the heat this morning. once again with us, we have our drone. if we launch that, you can get a good perspective of where we are

along lakeshore drive, that iconic chicago skyline in the background. do not let the beauty of this shot deceive you. once again here in chicago like much of the country, it's going to be another hot and humid day. triple digit heat is baking america from coast to coast with the sizzle now spreading east. >> i'm trying to, you know, splash water on my face and on my back and on my head every time i run past a water fountain. >> reporter: authorities urging people to be diligent. in alabama, a young girl is fighting for her life after being left in a hot car for hours. a heat dome currently sitting over more than 100 million people. relief is still several days away. here in chicago, workers are inspecting train tracks to make sure the heat isn't creating problems. all across the country, our team of correspondents is finding the weather having an impact. >> reporter: thanks to this concrete and asphalt, it traps that heat in manhattan. that's why they are setting up cooling centers throughout the

city to keep people safe and inside. >> reporter: here on the national mall it will be at 100 degrees or above. very, very humid. tourists are encouraged to drink lots of water but also take advantage of all of d.c.'s air conditioned museums. >> reporter: in southern california, a triple digit heat we have will send millions of people to the beach. sweltering temperatures lasting through the weekend bringing with it extreme fire danger. >> reporter: heat is depleting the fun in iowa where soccer camp is canceled. >> hot. >> reporter: attendees at san diego comic con are rethinking their weekend costumes. back out here live, lake michigan, you can see some beach yoga going on. the beaches are ready to go. we expect them to be full this weekend as people look for some relief from this oppressive heat. it's cooler here by the water. and now it's the east coast turn to get a taste of what they've been feeling here in the midwest

people's nominee. >> reporter: a senior adviser tells me this morning we can expect to see even more of ivanka trump on the campaign trail. one of the candidate's most sought after surrogates. to a major upheaval at crossroads of media and politics. it's official. roger ailes, a powerful force behind the scenes in television and the gop, has been ousted from his job as head of fox news. in his resignation letter, ailes said, i will not allow my presence to become a distraction from the work that must be done every day. it comes after gretchen carlson claimed in a lawsuit sexual harassment. ailes denies that. gabriel sherman has been covering this story for new york magazine and author of "the loudest voice in the room" which details roger ailes time at fox

news. what is your reporting say about how this went down this week? did roger ailes fight this or did he more or less accept this? >> his instinct was to fight. he rallied employees to speak out against gretchen carlson. they conducted an investigation into the sexual harassment claims and as evidence mounted, he saw the writing on the wall and lawyers prepared to negotiate his exit. >> there's cocktail charity and curiosity about what ailes' next move would be. go into politics or work for donald trump or start a new network and take big fox talent with him. what are you hearing? >> i think he can't start a rival network as part of his severance agreement, he has a

noncompete clause with rupert murdoch which bars him from entering the news business after leaving fox. roger ailes got his start working for richard nixon's 1968 presidential campaign and donald trump has been running a silent majority law and order campaign. there's a lot of talk. there's no deal in place. i think the two men know each other. the question for trump though is considering his issues with women, does he want to hire a media adviser who has just come out of a very public sexual harassment scandal. >> it's reported that some of the biggest stars at fox news have an out in their clause that would allow them to exit if roger ailes was no longer there. is that true and what's the likelihood that we could see that kind of exodus? >> it's true the biggest stars including bill o'reilly have out clauses in their contract. it was roger ailes' spin to put
