give you a live look as crews are preparing for the crowds and nbc 10 pam osborne is live. you're inside the center, give us a look at the convention set-up. show us. >> reporter: that's right, vai, we're joining you live from the floor. this will be our home for the duration of the dnc. if you look behind me, you can see they've started sectioning off seating for delegates by state but of course, the biggest thing that happened today was the reveal of the stage. for the first time today, we got a look at what everything is going to look like. sure to put philadelphia in the national spotlight once again. the stage has been set and so has the standard. you're looking at one of the largest led screens in the world. >> very, very proud of philadelphia, of this building, of the work done here and what will happen here. >> reporter: what is going to happen here, a first in a city of firsts. >> history is going to be made. we'll nominate the first woman

major candidate in the democratic party and she will go on to win in november and we'll shatter that glass ceiling forever. >> reporter: just days away from the start of the dnc, crews work to ready 1,324 seats for delegates and whith the whole world watching, mayor kinny hopes what shines brightest is the principles of the democratic party. >> inclusion, diversity, acceptance, not marginalizing people, not dividing people. >> reporter: quite different than what republican nominee donald trump spelled out during his acceptance speech last night in cleveland at the rnc. >> i was sitting there last night thinking wwf. vince mcmahon and all of the yelling and screaming. >> reporter: while security both inside and out of the wells fargo center is tight, our borders, kinny says, shouldn't be. it is why he says hillary clinton has his vote come november. >> america understands that is what their role should be, not

we're dealing with the hottest stretch of weather this weekend. try to cool off any way you can. here is a live look at camel beach in the poconos. a great place for a day like today. bill henley is here with our forecast. >> whatever you can do to stay cool. we're heading into a period of dangerous heat that begins this afternoon. pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware today. through the weekend and into next week, the high heat and humidity will make it feel like 100 to 105 degrees this afternoon. temperatures are already a bit warmer than yesterday. 85 degrees in philadelphia, allentown coatesville is 82. mount holly is 85 degrees. but add in the higher humidity and 85 degrees right now in the city feels like 90 degrees for philadelphia. upper 80s for mount holly and atlantic city. 92 degrees is the feels like temperature. actual temperatures will warm into the middle 90s for new jersey, the lehigh valley and

delaware. you see scattered clouds in the lehigh valley late this afternoon and this evening. there is a chance we'll see thunderstorms and they could be stronger thunderstorms this afternoon. a chance of those into the suburbs and a slight chance of evening storms for philadelphia, but most of the day we'll be watching the temperature and 95 degrees will feel more like 100 degrees today. the weekend forecast and beyond will show you how long this heat is going to last when we come back, vai? >> we'll see you then, bill. download the nbc 10 app. you'll get weather alerts sent straight to your phone. we'll have tips so you can stay cool in the dangerous heat. the family of a 49-year-old woman found beat to death in her bedroom is urging the person who killed her to come forward. the victim, who is the mother -- who is a mother and grandmother was found dead in her bedroom yesterday in hunting park. her family gathered outside the home on north percy street as police investigated. they tell us she was always volunteering at her church. >> if you were in need and it

was something that you needed, she would do it. >> to grasp some of the things mentally in your head that just happened to my mother-in-law, one can't sleep one wink or two. >> there is a surveillance camera across the street on a neighbor's property. the family thinks they know who may have killed the woman. someone shot and killed a woman overnight in the cobbs creek section of philadelphia. a 21-year-old man was shot in the head and found lying in the middle of locust just after midnight. police were going door-to-door overnight seeing if anyone saw or heard anything. they're also getting video from cameras at sayer high school which is nearby. time now for a check on the road with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. what are you seeing? >> we're watching through center city. this is the vine street expressway around 24th street. no huge problems or delays but

we are seeing more of a significant delay headed eastbound towards 95 and this eastbound drive time here is in the yellow. it only says three minutes but it will add a minute or two to your drive if you're headed out and about around the city. bridges, we're dealing with construction over the ben franklin street. two are closed heading into philadelphia and one is closed headed east ward noor new jersey. over the delaware memorial bridge, we had an earlier accident that is cleared out of the way. you can see residual delay because of that and we're watching lane restrictions for some construction. the combination of the two is making a delay heading into delaware. also out in upper hahnover way layfield road and school house road for an accident and if you're headed to the shore getting an early start to your weekend, you'll have no problems. here is the 42 expressway. police in manchester township ocean county have a warning about rattlesnakes. police sent us these pictures after receiving several confirmed sightings of timber rattlesnakes in the roosevelt city section of the township.

who also has national security experience, kaine emerged as a frontrunner. some progressives accused him of being too pro trade and soft on wall street but supporters say he checks all of the boxes. he kept his cards close to the vest. >> i'm a happy senator and i'm not looking for another job. >> reporter: but there are other big names for the running including agriculture secretary tom millsack, a long-term friend of the clintons. vilsak could help deliver the swing state. he answered questions during a roundtable involving opioid abuse. >> i'm talking about an issue i care deeply about. >> reporter: there are questions about his ability to rally young and minority voters. that could be a strength for another top contender. new jersey senator cory booker, booker has a relatively thin resumé. >> with hillary clinton, we will rise. >> but is known for his im

heat and more humidity. it is hotter and more humid today. we saw it near 90 in philadelphia yesterday but the winds have shifted. that is bringing in additional humidity that can lead to a chance of thunderstorms this evening. the storms we're watching are in western pennsylvania right now. 85 degrees in philadelphia, and the lehigh valley where it started off cooler this morning. delaware at 82 degrees. look at the 80s for south jersey and the jersey show at 86 degrees right now. the suburbs will be warming into the 90s but it feels like it is up to 90 degrees at lincoln university and westchester feels like temperature of 95 at this hour. warring ton with the high humidity and temperatures in the 80s. feels like 90 degrees and 92 degrees in fort washington hotter feeling than yesterday and the winds, they have shifted and today they're out of the southwest. that will drive the temperatures and the humidity up so you'll feel the difference today but it is not just today you can expect this kind of heat right on

through the weekend and into next week. 99 is what we'll feel like this afternoon in center city. a chance of a late day storm most likely in the evening than this afternoon and more likely you'll see some of the storms during the late afternoon hours and the suburbs of the lehigh valley but most of the day it is going to be hot and humid. 92 the high in westchester, feel like 96 degrees. east and 96 degrees this afternoon is what it will feel like and not much better at the jersey shore. high temperatures in the upper 80s. it will feel like it is in the 90s. a chance of a storm and central new jersey late this afternoon and this evening but until then it is going to be hot and humid with plenty of sunshine and sunny skies in wilmington driving temperatures into the 90s. it will feel like 100 in smyrna this afternoon. the satellite and radar, you can see the scattered clouds moving through the area. the storms rolled past lake erie and are going in the pittsburgh area. those storms should stay to the

west but the low pressure area causing the storms could allow storms to develop in our area this afternoon. heavy rain moving through the pittsburgh area. see thunder and lightning as well. we'll be watching the skies long with the temperatures. the weekend forecast is calling for high temperatures in the upper 90s saturday and sunday so it turns hotter for the weekend and gets even hotter on monday. 98 degrees in philadelphia, much of the area will see showers and thunderstorms develop on monday and that will not be the end of the heat. the ten day outlook has temperatures soaring through the weekend and into monday. we'll get the storms 98 degrees monday afternoon and still hot and humid on tuesday. the storms taking a break with a high of 95 and slowly decreasing high temperatures over the coming days next week. by friday, 90 degrees with a chance of scattered showers and 89 finally below the 90 degree mark on saturday but right back up there on sunday with a chance

of more storms. vai? >> be sure to take care of your pets as well. don't leave them in your car. speaking of pets. nbc 10 is clearing the shelters, we're working with local shelters find pets forever homes. katy zachry met a pair of dogs through a harrowing ordeal. their owner was electrocuted in a flood and the late owner's wish, find them a home together. >> kate and blue are not from here. they lived in west virginia with owner joanie adams but a freak accident this summer rendered them orphans. it happened during devastating flooding when adams and a friend -- >> went down to the basement which already had water in it to save some pictures and some other items and unfortunately, they were electrocuted and passed away. the dogs alerted neighbors that something was wrong because they were barking and the neighbors came to see what was wrong. >> april moyer is with mostly

muts rescue. one of adams friends contacted them about housing the dogs until someone wanted to adopt them together. the younger one, kate, is dependant on blue. >> they both love it outside. they love -- their foster home has a whole acre. they roam around the entire property. they love to just kind of do what he is doing, lay down. >> how difficult is it to adopt two dogs out together as opposed to just one. >> it almost never happens that way. it is extremely difficult. but in this case, it is the right thing to do and we made a promise, actually, also, to j n joanie's mom. we'll keep that promise and keep them as long as we have to until we find them a home together. >> katy zamry. nbc 10 news. >> more than 3,000 animals will be available at 35 local shelters. adoption fees are waived so get a list of the shelters with animals looking for homes.

it is almost show time. philadelphia is about to be thrust into the national spotlight again as the democrats make their way to town for the

start of the democratic national convention and here is a live look at the wells fargo center in south philadelphia where much of the action will be happening as hillary clinton accepts the democratic party nomination next week. and helping to roll out the red carpet is kevin washington with the executive director of the 2016 host committee. kevin, thank you for being here. we've been talking so much about the dnc coming to philadelphia, it seems like it has been forever but now it is a couple of days away. tell us some of the final preparations under way right now. >> you're right. it is hard to believe three years of work is coming down to a couple of days. we're excited. philadelphia has a long history of doing big events right now. 18,000 volunteers have been recruited and the red carpet rolled out. we can't be happy with where we're at. >> what are some of the piggest roles the host committee has during the convention. >> imagine having a big dinner party. you want people to come, enjoy the food, the conversation, enjoy the wine. that is what we're trying to do

for 50,000 people. look at philadelphia in a positive look and come back after this is over. that is what we're trying to do. >> you want them to leave, talking about it to their friends. you want that to happen. you don't have to be a delegate to enjoy the dnc. what are some of the events available for the public? >> great question. a couple of things we've been looking at, political fest, an interactive political display that we're working with seven of the local museums with is a great way to get people to come into downtown to experience the political process they may have never seen before. for example, we have air force one replica, a replica of air force one inside of the convention center. we're encouraging people to come into center city and enjoy the experience, enjoy the are you notes and caves. you don't want to miss this campaign to make sure people know that if you want to come down and have dinner with your wife, you can do that in philadelphia. >> you would think it would be crazy to come to a city like philadelphia if you've never been here and come to the convention and not venture over to see the liberty bell and

everyone, after giving an epically long speech here in cleveland it is the longest convention speech we've seen in over 40 years, donald trump and his running mate mike pence thanked supporters here before leaving, continuing his theme from last night. law and order, getting crime and terror threats under control, restricting immigration, supporting working families, blowing up free trade agreements to bring back jobs and something new. protecting the lgbt community from violence. >> as your president, i will do everything i can in my power to protect our lgbtq citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful, foreign ideology. believe me. >> and i have to say as a republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what i just said. >> reporter: next campaign stop for trump is virginia. his campaign has a plan to try

to pick off some blue states, traditionally democratic states to win even if they don't win ohio where the polls show he is dead locked with hillary clinton. speaking of clinton, the stage is set for the democrats literally, they unveiled their new stage for the next week's dnc in philadelphia. this morning, their theme, stronger together and we're still waiting to see who clinton will choose as her running mate. that announcement will come as early as this afternoon. in cleveland, i'm tracie potts, back to you. the rnc is now over. the dnc starts monday in philadelphia. tracy davidson asked the delegates what they expect from the city of brotherly love. >> reporter: cleveland has gotten high marks on how it rolled out the red carpet for delegates. the spotlight turns to philadelphia. >> i'm excited that philadelphia will be on the world stage. we are a great town and we'll put on a first class show for

the entire world to see. it is going to be great for the city. >> i think they've got to be prepared to put on a good show, not only inside, but outside. and i think philadelphia is up for the challenge. i love philadelphia. i don't wish the democrats any bad will. i hope they have a great convention. >> cleveland, i've educated every single person on the street and every person on the street is so amicable. philadelphia is the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection and they need to show that. >> reporter: a couple of the local delegates say they hope the city will do well but doubt very much the democrats can have the type of party the republicans had in cleveland. and now we're counting down to the democratic national convention here in philadelphia and the stage is just about set at the wells fargo center. this is a live look right now from outside in south philly. the dnc begins here on monday at

countdown to the dnc, tap the nbc 10 app. temple university has a new acting president after former president neal theobald resigned from his post. they were concerned about his conduct after learning of a budget deficit. they hired richard engald. he is a long-term employee who promises to move the school forward. right now, crews are searching for an indian air air force plane that went missing today. the air craft took off from southern india and was flying over bengal when it disappeared from radar. it was carrying 29 people, claupg t including the crew. we have more information on the search for the malaysia flight that disappeared more

than two years ago. the if credible new information emerges, they will consider the possibility of resumeng the search. 239 passengers and crew were on board flight 370 when it disappeared on its way from kuala lampur from beijing. health officials are seeing if mosquitos collected near miami was tested positive for the zika virus. they're trying to determine if two people were infected directly. neither person traveled to the zika infected country. they were not spread sexually either. if they test positive, it will be the first in the u.s. main land. in colorado, officials are telling residents of a small town to avoid drinking tap water because it may be contaminated with marijuana chemicals. state investigators are on their way to hugo which is southeast of denver to try to figure out how thc may have gotten into the

well water system. that is the chemical that cause its intoxication. some tests of the water came back positive, others came back negative. hugo prohibits the growing of marijuana and retail stores. those activities are legal elsewhere in the state of colorado. a little girl who stole the voice at the rnc, 6-year-old heavenly joy jerkins is from gal way township. listen to this. ♪ america, america, ♪ >> how about that big voice? heavenly joy performed a medley of christian and patriotic songs to warm up the crowd last night ahead of prime time speeches. her father, rodney jerkins is a record producer. he is responsible for hits you might know like the boy is mine, you rock my world and say my

shrinkage in the brain linked to decision making and impulse control. athletes who never had head injuries showed no signs of those changes. women who smoke may have a higher risk of bleeding inside of the lining of the brain. scientists found women who smoked a few cigarettes a day were nearly three times as likely to face a brain hemorrhage than nonsmokers. those who smoked 20 a day were more likely to develop the condition. when they quit smoking, it lowered to the risk of nonsmokers. quitting smoking may help you cut down on drinking. those who tried to smoke drinking were less likely to binge drink compared to smokers who weren't trying to quit. experts are trying to figure out if recent quitters drink less to avoid a relapse or if there is another connection. it may finally be time to convert all of the old vhs tapes on to dvd.

a japanese company who claims to be the last vcr manufacturer says they're stopping production of the machines. they were selling 15 million units per year at one point. following the instruction of dvd and blue ray players, sales dropped to 750,000 units last year. the manufacturer says it is getting harder to find parts to make the devices. tomorrow, nbc 10 is clearing the shelters and we need your help. we're working with local shelters to find pets forever homes. brittany anthony and abigail degroff is here with faithful friends animal society and they brought two cute puppies for adoption. these little guys, you hear them whipp whimpering a bit. >> we're from faithful friends

animal society. we're a no kill shelter, today we brought two of our adorable adoptables. we have miss sally here. this is sam. her brother. >> they are three month old puppies that we rescued. we're not sure what type of dogs they are, we'll see once they are older but they will be large breed dogs. in addition to sam and sooner or latery, we have lots of adorable cats, kittens, adult dogs of all types of breeds hoping to find homes tomorrow for clear the shelters. >> were you involved -- >> this is our first year, we're excited and nbc has been so great to work with. we're hoping to find awesome homes for these guys. we have quite a few animals. we have about 50 dogs at our shelter and couple hundred cats hoping to find the perfect match. >> i think you guys and maybe a dozen other shelters are waiving the adoption fee, right? as a one day deal to do that, if

delaware, and the suburbs and lehigh valley, more likely we'll see stronger storms to the north during the day today. this weekend, pretty quiet when it comes to storms for saturday and sunday but the temperatures soar, in fact, hotter on saturday than on sunday. the humidity will be higher saturday afternoon as well. that 97 will feel like 105 in the afternoon. the suburbs, lehigh valley, south jersey and delaware will all see those very high temperatures and even at the shore, unusually warm, 90 degrees for saturday and again on sunday. a little bit of a break in the temperature on sunday and a break from the humidity from the highest humidity but then it is right back into the area on monday. the temperatures soaring to 98 degrees so i'll have a chance of storms later today. pretty quiet over the weekend for saturday and sunday, then likely to see the late day storms on monday but we will get sunshine before those storms move in. 98 degrees, the high temperature could feel like 105 degrees
