because of the first alert of the temperatures will be in the 90s. with the humidity feeling like 100 to 105 degrees. right now, it is already very hot through the area, and even more humid than yesterday. 92 in philadelphia. many of our pennsylvania suburbs in the low 90s. south jersey, low 90s. 88 degrees in wilmington. if we look at chester county, taemtsd at 90 degrees in westchester. phoenixville coming in 91 degrees right now. elroy 93. if you're in warrington, you're at 92. 95 degrees in new hope. when you factor in the humidity, here's what it feels like right now. 98 in philadelphia. 95 in atlantic city and mount holly. as we go across the weekend, temperatures feeling even hotter right around about 105 in some areas. maybe heen a couple degrees holter than that. by 7:00 p.m. tonight, still the mid to low 90s across the area.

10:00 tonight, it will be warm, humid, temperature right around 83 degrees. dangerous heat for your weekend. we'll talk more about that and how hot you can expect it to get coming up. any minute now, hillary clinton is expected to announce her vice presidential pick. you are looking live at a campaign rally in tampa where hillary clinton is expected to take that stage momentarily. when she does, sources tell nbc news she will announce her running mate. front-runner is reportedly virginia senator tim kaine. but sources say new jersey senator cory booker is a contender as well. stay with nbc 10. we will bring you clinton's choice as soon as she announces her decision. while clinton is in tampa today, a few days from now she'll be accepting her party's nomination for president right here in philadelphia. the democratic national convention kicks off monday at the wells fargo center. we're getting our first look at the transformation inside. >> rosemary connors is there

live. rosemary? >> reporter: jacqueline and keith, a lot going on here today. plenty of people coming and going from the convention floor. a lot of the activity has been up here on stage. they've been doing sound checks. they've been taking a look at the monitors, the graphics to make sure everything's running smoothly. that's all going to change tomorrow around noon. that's when the wells fargo center will be locked down for a very tight security sweep. the secret service is already on site. in fact, earlier we saw one agent with his canine partners checking out the balloons that will be dropped from the rafters in the arena thursday night. the delegates arrive this weekend. in addition to security, the technicians, carpenters and stagehands are wrapping up the final preparations. representatives with the city of philadelphia are very eager to welcome the thousands of delegates and visitors as the city will be center stage for the next week. >> the economic impact is fantastic. we're going to see a tremendous

increase of our hotels, all of our restaurants. we're the only city who has this, and that's why. because philadelphia knows how to put on a party. >> reporter: and what would a party be without balloons, as i mentioned. where these balloons are situated right here, that's where the pennsylvania delegation is going to be seated. as i mentioned earlier, they are getting some of the best seats in the house. philadelphia is the only city to host two conventions within just a few election cycles. many of you remember that the rnc was here in 2000. coming up, at 6:00 we'll be talking to some of the stagehands who have been part of this who process. rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. >> a lot of transformation they've made already with the red, white and blue, and how much of a transformation they'll make between now and monday. rosemary, we'll see you soon. >> let's go above the wells fargo center. mitch blocker live in sky force 10. what are you seeing, mitch? >> reporter: you can see the transformation happening outside

here. we're going to show you the corner of where the xfinity live center is. that is that security fencing that you can see. they have a pile of some of the extra fencing that they're going to finish that up as rosemary said by saturday, when they secure this facility, go through their final checks. the secret service in charge of all security inside the perimeter. the philadelphia police department taking the lead outside of that secure perimeter. 19,000 feet of fencing, according to the secret service. that is 3 1/2 miles of anti-climb fencing that a private contractor will put up all around this facility. also, the city of philadelphia is hiring private security to help the philadelphia police department with anything outside of that secure perimeter. you're probably thinking it costs a lot of money. the federal government sends $40 million to the city to cover some of those costs. that's the latest from sky force 10. mitch blocker, nbc 10 news. >> thank you so much, mitch. take a look at what was flying over the wells fargo

center today. a banner plane with a message for the dnc that says, if you can't make it out your screen, end super delegates. the dnc and bylaws committee, a vote on super delegates is expected. a super delegate is unelected and is free to support any candidate for the presidential nomination at the party's national convention. the democratic party is more than 700. nbc 10 will be covering every angle of the dnc here in philadelphia. count on us for live team coverage on air, and online from now until the end of the convention. today donald trump said good-bye to cleveland, and closed the book on the republican national convention. trump and his vice presidential choice, mike pence, hosted a farewell rally in cleveland this morning. trump called the convention one of the most successful in history. >> one of the most love-filled conventions in the history of conventions. and when they talk about unity,

i want to tell you, that was unity. that was unity, right? >> trump also addressed ted cruz's decision not to endorse him, saying cruz may have ruined his own political career. trump also said he does not want cruz's endorsement in the future. trump is now the official republican presidential nominee after he formally accepted the nomination wa speech last night. what was trump's message at the rnc? you can check out this word cloud. it's a visual representation of the words that donald trump used most in his speech last night. you can see country is the most prominent, followed by america. hillary is very small, while violence is big. as trump addressed the recent attacks on police, and the terrorism threats to the nation. today president obama said donald trump's portrayal of america during the rnc isn't consistent with the truth. >> this idea that america is

somehow on the verge of collapse, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere, doesn't really jive with the experience of most people. >> president obama made the comment as he hosted the president of mexico at the white house today. he said he didn't watch the rnc, but he read trump's speech. the president said illegal immigration and violent crime are much smaller problems now than they were a few decades ago. we have new information about breaking news we're following overseas. authorities now say at least nine people are dead following a shooting at a shopping mall in germany. a manhunt is under way for up to three possible shooters armed with rifles. the shootings started outside a mcdonald's restaurant attached to a shopping mall in munich. the shooters are believed to have made their way into the mall. police are calling the attack suspected terrorism. back here at home, philadelphia police released new video of a man they think may be

targeting prostitutes in kensington. you can see him wearing a baseball cap and carrying a backpack. detectives say earlier this month this guy choked a 24-year-old woman. she survived. but police also think the same guy may have beaten a woman to death in the same area op saturday night. in both cases, he was riding a black and blue mountain bike when it happened. the woman accused of kidnapping a baby at the king of prussia mall plans to use an insanity defense. the westchester local daily news said amore's filing. amore told police she gave birth to a baby that died hours later. but her attorneys say she has mental problems after a false pregnancy. tonight governor chris christie's criticizing a new proposal from democratic lawmakers that would raise new jersey's gas tack by 23 cents per gallon.

the assembly speaker announced to fund the state's transportation projects, they're planning to balance the gas tax hike with other tax cuts. governor christie said their plan is too vague. they passed on christie's plan that also involved raising the gas tax by 23 cents. pennsylvania is prime for amazon. governor tom wolf said the online retailer is coming to north hampton county. 5,000 full-time positions will be created over the next three years. amazon will expand its presence across the state with new philment and distribution centers. they're getting $15 million in tax credits from the state. down in the first state -- >> they performed better on standardized tests this year. the state department released the figures showing 55% of students are proficient in english, and 44% in math.

that's about a 3% increase from last year in delaware. jack mar kel spoke at a ceremony this morning revealing the leonard williams justice center. williams was the second african-american judge in the state. williams' family attended today's ceremony. don't get burned. new york city now has its first baby born with the zika virus. the city health department announced today the mother was infected while in an area known to have mosquitoes transmitting the virus. the baby was born with the zika related microcephaly, and has a smaller than normal head. so far, the cdc says 12 babies have been born in the u.s. with zika related birth defects. now to a consumer alert from "nbc 10 responds." it is an important message for

the shore even though our shore points will be around 90 degrees. it's going to go from now until the beginning of next week. until about tuesday. very hot and humid. temperatures will be in the 90s, with the humidity feeling like from 100 to 105 degrees. we expect a prolonged heat wave into the beginning, possibly the middle, maybe even the end of next week. so it's going to stay hot for a long time. there's not much relief in the forecast anytime soon. temperatures currently in the low 90s. 92 philadelphia. low 90s throughout pennsylvania suburbs, as well as south jersey, even along the shore. we'll take a closer look at our delaware neighborhoods. 92 in marshalton right now. wilmington 91. odessa at 89 degrees. you feel a lot hotter with the humidity. 91 ellendale. 91 in dover. 86 felton. look at this wind direction. it's coming in from the south. that's a pretty warm wind, especially when you get farther south in portions of delaware. rehoboth beach coming in at 91

degrees. bethany beach 95. that's not the feels-like temperature, that's the actual temperature. this is future feels-like. but for now, we do feel mostly like the mid to upper 90s across the area. overnight we'll still be very warm and humid. if you're heading out this friday evening, now we're looking at saturday, 11:30 tomorrow. so right around lunchtime. look at the feels-like temperature. already anywhere from 100 to 104 degrees. now we're going to go into the afternoon. the hottest time of the day. temperatures from about 100 to maybe 106 degrees. it is going to be hot, it's going to be humid. this is dangerous heat. here's a look at future temperatures. so this air mass over our area, hot and humid. that's going to stick around. if you look at the time stamp, all the way into the beginning of next week. possibly the middle of next week. which is why we have the first alert out for so long. this same air mass is pretty much going to stay in place. we have nothing to really break up this pattern anytime soon. right now we're looking at

radar. very little in the way of rain relief. potentially nothing for today across the weekend. we really don't have any rain chances in the weekend forecast. not until monday, mostly monday afternoon. we're going to watch that chance of showers, either way temperatures are still going to be hot. here's a look at your neighborhoods for tomorrow. feeling around 100. allentown 96 degrees. mostly sunny. if you're in new jersey tomorrow, 97 hamilton township. wilmington coming in at 97, feeling around 105 degrees. your shore forecast saturday and sunday, temperatures will be right around 90. so it's going to be a hot one. it's going to be humid. it's going to be dry. heat index is high, about 10 to 15 minutes before you get the sunburn. sun block, water, stay hydrated. try to stay cool. avoid several hours at the same time outside this weekend, and into the beginning of next week. again, this is dangerous heat.

check on the elderly, and you want to make sure you never leave children and pets in the car. unfortunately we still have to tell people this. it will be a hot day tomorrow. if you're adopting any animals tomorrow, go to nbc10.com to see which shelters are participating. do not leave them in the car before you go out to get them a dog pet or anything like that. take them home first. the beginning to end of next week we'll stay in the 90s. even next weekend we could still be right around 90 degrees. closer look at your neighborhood weather coming up. >> all right, sheena. a new patriotic glow in honor of the democratic national convention. the lights along boathouse road have been upgraded and will relight tomorrow night. the lights will be in red, white and blue. we're asking everyone to help us clear the shelters. have you heard about this? if you decide to take a new pet home, there are steps you can take to make the transition a lot easier.

what happens after you get the pet home, we sent nbc 10's drew smith to find out. >> reporter: shaggy is a young playful cat who grew to like his camera time. but when he first came in the room with us, he was a little skittish. >> it can be stressful to have a new pet in your house. you might find some challenges. >> reporter: brittany watson said first give cats their own space. and give dogs time to get used to other people or animals. if you have other pets, once again, be patient with your new family member. >> reporter: the doctors here stress preventive care is very important so that you're much less likely to deal with an emergency with your new pet. >> cats can get diabetes if they're overweight. just like people can. >> reporter: find out what food the shelter was using and buy that. transition your pet to something else later. watson said it will take some time to get to know each other, even though that first meeting is important. >> they get to have this really special bond, that essentially

is something that impacts the person and the animal for their whole life. >> reporter: a bond that begins with adoption, and can grow every day after. in university city, drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> we just talked about what you need to do after adopting a pet. but here's what you need to do beforehand. head to the local shelter, of course, to bring your photo i.d., and any documents that confirm you're allowed to have a pet. most importantly you've got to bring the entire family. everyone who's living in your house should meet your new pet first before bringing them home. you can help out nbc 10 clear the shelters. it's tomorrow. because more than 3,000 animals will be available at 35 local shelters, adoption fees are waived, most of them. a list of shelters is available on the nbc 10 app. just click on clear the shelters. why do some animals get adopted and some don't? some have been in shelters so long no one can figure out why.

we're learning new information about the breaking news we're following overseas. a deadly shooting at a mall in germany. >> drew smith has an update. >> police said eight people were killed in an unknown number of others were wounded. now we've learned a ninth body had been found. police were intensively examining whether it might be one of the suspects. authorities said they were searching up to three possible shooters armed with rifles. according to police spokesperson, the shooting started at a mcdonald's restaurant before the gunmen made their way into the mall. trains, trans and buses and subways have been shut down in munich. police urged residents to stay inside as they hunt for the attackers. we'll bring you the latest here on nbc 10. drew smith, nbc 10 news. >> drew, thank you very much. another big story we're following. this weather. first alert weather, the heat is on.

and it's sticking around for a while. temperature soaring, humidity rising. dangerous combination that has people searching for relief anywhere they can. >> hop in the water. some people have the right idea here at the water park in the poconos. you do need to prepare yourself for the heat, though. things are going to get more intense before they get better. >> that's right. because today is just the start the what's expected to be the hottest stretch so far this summer. >> shinea parveen is here with more. >> i think we should emphasize, it's going to be a stretch like keith just mentioned of dangerous heat. not just one day, and not just two days, we're actually going to go into next week with temperatures feeling potentially like triple digits. the heat and humidity is going to stick around for a while. dangerous heat for pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. that's where we're calling the first alert. with the exception of the shore. but the shore is still going to be hot this weekend. the first alert is from now

until tuesday. with heat and humidity making it feel like anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. we call it dangerously hot, because this is the type of weather where you can get heat exhaustion or heatstroke. you want to avoid several hours outside in the middle of the day. stay in the shade, stay cool, stay hydrated. check on the elderly. never leave children or pets in the car. temperatures like i mentioned dangerously hot. it's 92 right now in philadelphia. even the pennsylvania suburbs, lehigh valley coming in mostly mid to low 90s right now. the jersey shore, temperatures are heating up, too. upper township 90 degrees. woodbin coming in around 90 degrees. cape may point 85 degrees. it is hot, it is humid, especially with that south wind. if you look at the seven-day at the bottom of the screen, you see the days outlined in red, that's the first alert. the feels-like temperature, feels like 98 in philadelphia,

98 in dover. vineland feelings like the low 90s. trenton and holly mid-90s height now. it is going to keep feeling like this, even a little bit hotter over your weekend. temperatures are going to be in the upper 90s, feeling like triple digits. this will go into the start of next week. coming up, we'll look at how hot you can expect it to feel no matter where you live, and your shore forecast. it's going to be h-o-t at the dnc. all the visitors coming into town, the city is looking for ways to keep people cool. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas with that story. >> reporter: you just have to be out here for a few minutes before you start sweating. now, imagine protesting on broad street from city hall all the way down to fdr park. that's the plan some groups have next week, law enforcement will be right by their side. making sure that everyone stays

safe. at the salvation army, palates of water in preparation for the dnc. >> the heat wave kicking off today and going pretty much through the entire end of the week, hydration is going to be not just a courtesy thing, but also a safety thing as well. >> reporter: starting tomorrow, through next thursday, first responders in the elements of the salvation army representatives not far behind. >> we'll be doing snack items and cold towels. particularly in the peak portions of the day. >> reporter: just like at the republican national convention in cleveland, protesters are expected at the dnc by the tens of thousands. with temperatures projected to stay in the 90s, they, too, can be at risk. >> have misting tents and medical facilities and medic units on standby. we're delivering water on a regular basis. >> reporter: and medics will be assigned to schedule marches. city leaders want to make sure

everyone stays safe while supporting their first amendment rights. we've learned there are going to be two medic tents at fdr park. that's where a majority of the protests will take place. so if you decide to participate, remember, wear light clothing and bring plenty of water. live in south philadelphia, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> great advice, andrea. today we got a glimpse of what it will look like inside the dnc at the wells fargo center. the stage is set. it includes one of the largest l.e.d. screens in the world. starting tomorrow, you're going to have to watch where you park in philadelphia. broad street will close, streets around fdr park and the wells fargo center will also close. on sunday, the city will start towing cars. so watch out for that. closure for septa customers for the at&t station, at the naval hospital, it's closing by the end of the day. it will not reopen until monday

august 1st. starting monday, septa customers can park at south philadelphia high school at broad and snider street at no cost. the international spotlight will shine on philadelphia yet again as democrats make their way to town this weekend for the start of the dnc. kevin is the executive director of the 2016 host committee. he said you don't have to be a delegate to enjoy the dnc. >> politicalfest is an interactive political display we're working with seven of our local museums with, is a great way to get people to come into downtown and experience the political process that they may have never seen before. we have air force one -- a replica inside the convention center. enjoy the restaurants, enjoy the cafes, see a show. that's why we've created this. you don't want to miss this campaign. if you want to come down and have dinner with your wife, do that. you can still do that in philadelphia. >> politicalfest is going on right now, and runs through july

one of the three baton rouge police officers killed in an ambush sunday was laid to rest today. a funeral was held for officer

matthew juryald. the 41-year-old was a former marine and black hawk chief in the army who did three tours in iraq. giralt had been with the baton rouge police department for one year. three were killed and several others were wounded sunday morning. authorities found three guns on him after he was killed. the mayor of baton rouge delivered a powerful melt at girality's funeral. >> respect means you give honor to those who honor is due. the men and women who put on those uniforms. they respect you. respect them. >> funerals for the other fallen officers will take place saturday and monday. it has been one week since that deadly truck attack in nice, france. today two black banners adorning with the names of 84 people who

lost their lives were unveiled at city hall. a few people gathered outside the gate to pay their respects. the victims of the bastille day attack. the search is over for a missing malaysia airlines plane that went missing two years ago. flight mh-370 disappeared with 239 people onboard. while en route to kuala lumpur. australia and china said the search area has been completely scoured. it is believed the plane crashed into the indian ocean. relatives of passengers presumed missing, some presumed dead, say they still have questions for those conducting the search. following the announcement, relatives gathered outside the government office and held up posters demanding the search continues until the plane is found. an alarming statistic now in a new federal report on youth and mental health. 1 in 9 teens in the u.s. experiences a major depressive

episode each year. that works out to be about 3 million kids. researchers say nearly two-thirds did not receive treatment, and stigma may be partly to blame. >> particularly for young people having this kind of fear about disclosing they have a mental health problem, fears that may impact upon their social status, or future job opportunities is still very real. >> a major depressive episode is considered a period of two weeks or longer when someone feels depressed and shows changes in normal behaviors like sleeping, eating and energy levels. taking a right-hand turn. nbc 10 is trying to clear the shelters. we found some animals who have been waiting to get adapted for way far too long. we'll meet them next. also coming tomorrow, more heat than today. more humidity. it's going to feel like triple digits over the weekend. dangerous heat in the forecast.

the owner of a package full of marijuana accidently delivered it to the wrong door in montgomery county. >> check this out. police say someone called police when a package they weren't expecting with no name was placed at their door. police found this block of marijuana inside. now the police department is hoping to return the package to its rightful owner. and maybe chat with them about it. let's talk about big story happening today. your first alert weather, of course. we've got an important message if you're spending a lot of time outside.

city hall behind us, going to the park, if you're taking a walk in the backyard at all. >> it is going to be dangerously hot. you do need to take precautions. randy gyllenhaal has been traveling through different parts of our area today. >> the weather can be a lot different from neighborhood to neighborhood. in this case, it's going to be hot everywhere. >> reporter: pretty hot everywhere we went, in three different states. if you're coming outside, you want the bottle of water, and shade like the people here in camden. there are hundreds of people out here at the exponential musicfest that goes all weekend. we're expecting 100-degree weather, or close to it this coming weekend. the camden waterfront heating up, a sizzling sound check, as bands take the stage. so hot out, that this confectionary started giving out free frozen treats for the responders working the festival. >> very hot out here.

delaware. with the exception of the shore, but it's still going to be hot at the shore, around 90 degrees. if you look at the seven-day at the bottom of your screen, you'll see the first four days we have outlined in red for most of our neighborhoods, and that is because of the first alert. it will go from now until tuesday. temperatures in the 90s, with a lot of humidity. i know you noticed it today. a lot more humid than yesterday. that's going to make temperatures feel like anywhere from 100 to 105 degrees. we're in the low 90s for most of the area. pennsylvania suburbs near 90 degrees. south jersey neighborhoods around the low 90s there. delaware coming in mostly in the low 90s. the philadelphia neighborhoods have been heating up this afternoon. parkside coming in at 90 degrees. if you're in fox chase, you're at 93 degrees. but feeling hotter when you factor in the humidity. here's what it feels like. feels like 98 degrees at philly international with the humidity. allentown feels like 96. trenton feels like 96. if you're in atlantic city, you

feel like 95. tomorrow we'll feel more like 100 degrees, possibly up to 105 in some spots. as we go across the weekend and into next week, this is a prolonged heat wave. these are the actual forecast temperatures, not the feels-like temperature. normal high is 87. we'll be about ten degrees above that over the next few days. that is dangerous heat. those 90s don't look like they're going to be breaking anytime soon. we also don't have much in the way of rain relief anytime soon. dry on radar. we expect maybe a couple of showers this afternoon, but the chances are so low, i don't think we'll see much. moisture off to the west but that's kind of fizzling out, too. stay hydrated, try to stay in air conditioning if you can. as we go through time, here with our future feels-like temperature, it's going to be warm and humid overnight tonight. if you have the friday night plans, be prepared. it's going to stay warm. this is 11:30 tomorrow morning. look at these feels-like

temperatures with the humidity. anywhere from 100 to about 103. and then we go through the afternoon. some areas could get up to about 106 with that humidity. the humidity makes all the difference, which is why this is dangerous heat. it's not so much a dry heat. the high for tomorrow, actual high in somerton, 97 degrees. feeling hotter. don't expect the rain to cool you off. pemberton, 97 degrees. longport, low 90s right along the shore. if you're in delaware, wilmington, 97, with a feels-like temperature around 104 degrees. make sure you stay hydrated. we're trying to stress that as we go through the entire weekend. a lot of people are going to be at the shore this weekend. brigantine, sunday coming in around 90 degrees, mostly sunny. wildwood, temperature tomorrow around 91 degrees. as well as sunday staying mostly sunny and dry. if you're heading to cape may, the water's going to be nice to cool off in.
