"nightly business report" . just hours before the start of the democratic convention in philadelphia. debbie wasserman schultz says she will step down when the dnc is over. the florida congresswoman has been under fire following the publication of hacked e-mails suggesting the democratic national committee favored hillary clinton in the presidential primaries. good evening. i'm keith jones. joining you live from the wells fargo center site of the democratic national convention. nbc 10 will be here all week long covering the stories coming out of the convention. that big story today is wasserman schultz stepping down. we're live with reaction to this breaking news. >> reporter: bernie sanders and his supporters are applauding this move but that does not mean

that this is over. one group called the bernie delegates network is asking why she's not stepping down till the end of the week. and another sanders supporter tells me this does not solve the problems they see with the democratic party. inside the convention hall, the stage is set for hillary clinton to become the democratic nominee, but already a major shake-up. the woman set to gavel this convention to order announcing she'll step down when it's over amid controversy over the dnc's neutrality during the primaries. debbie wasserman schultz put out a statement saying, quote, going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as party chair at the end of this convention. as party chair, this week i will open and close the convention, and i will address our delegates about the stakes involved in this election not only for democrats but for all americans. no mention, though, of the controversy swirling. a new wikileaks report purpo purporting to show dnc files

including some that seem to indicate getting stories out that could hurt bernie sanders' campaign. >> nobody has apologized to me. as you just mentioned, this does not come as a shock to me or my supporters. there's no question what the dnc was on secretary clinton's side from day one. we all know that. >> reporter: i asked clinton's campaign manager about the controversy today. do you believe there was anyone inside the dnc working against bernie sanders? >> i know nothing about anyone doing anything of the sort. i'm very proud of the primary that both of our campaigns ran. i think our campaign is now stronger as a result of that. and we're looking forward to having a really good unified convention. >> reporter: but sanders' supporters could make their own displeasure known outside and inside the hall where both sanders and clinton delegates will gather tomorrow. >> i thought hillary should step down with her. >> reporter: what does that mean? >> i think that she's part of the overall corruption that's

taken place. >> reporter: hillary clinton put out a statement today thanking debbie wasserman schultz for her service and saying she would continue to serve as a surrogate for her campaign. now, wasserman shumts is scheduled to stay that podium behind me tomorrow afternoon to gavel this convention into session. and then tomorrow night bernie sanders speaks. live at the dnc in wells fargo, i'm lauren mayk. also making news today the final arrivals of some 50,000 delegates here in philadelphia. today some received a philadelphia-style welcome at the airport. they were also welcomed by a heavy police presence. officers are posted at street corners across center city and even though the convention hasn't started, the protests have started. some are already larger than the biggest protests seen during the rnc in cleveland last week. randy gyllenhaal is live with more on the protests and the people now who have descended on

our city. >> reporter: keith, thousands of delegates and party officials are now in town. they were greeted by those protests down broad street as well as some pretty heavy security across much of center city. and don't forget this oppressive hot weather that could last through the end of the week. >> hillary, hillary. >> reporter: after months of waiting, delegates are finally on the ground in philadelphia. thousands arriving today kicking off the dnc at an lgbt happy hour promising party unity. >> we've met a lot of friends both on the hillary clinton side and the bernie side. these delegates are coming together. it's going to be a unity party on the floor of the convention. >> reporter: but visitors were confronted with suffocating hot weather, temperatures near 100 as a large protest marched down broad street, this group demanding action on climate city officials warning that demonstrations could get dangerous in this kind of weather. >> it's going to be tough with

the heat. there's no denying that. >> reporter: philadelphia police keeping a close eye on public hot spots saying they're also taking some extra steps in light of recent attacks on officers. >> we're taking some additional security measures to protect the police as well public. >> reporter: the formal convention begins tomorrow night. de delegates will attend private parties. >> i'm very excited. everybody has been welcoming. it is the city of brotherly love. >> reporter: they expect protests here at city hall, marching down broad street to fdr park. they will put together water and cooling stations and that medics will be following these demonstrations in this hot weather just in case. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. back here in philadelphia inside the wells fargo center

effect tomorrow as well. it will stay in effect until 6:00 tomorrow. the record to beat, 96 degrees in philadelphia. and we should blow right past that number tomorrow as we're expecting a high temperature in the upper 90s tomorrow. with that humidity building back in, temperatures right now definitely on the warm side in philadelphia as well as north and west. 93 degrees in allentown. a little cooler down here at 85 degrees in vineland. we didn't see that oppressive humidity today. that humidity is coming back full force for tomorrow. our heat indices tomorrow, it's going to feel like triple digits tomorrow. however you want to stay cool for monday, that's really what you want to be focused on. we're checking radar right now, still quite a ways away. but we're watching this warm front here. development could get some showers and even some isolated thundershowers out of that later on tonight. i'll be back with more in just a bit. >> trump talks. today the republican presidential nominee weighs in

the international olympic committee is not imposing a blanket ban on russian athletes at the rio olympics over the nation's doping record. the ioc says it's leaving it up to the global federation to decide what athletes to allow in their sport. it's dealing with state sponsored doping. russia's track and field athletes have been banned from the rio games over the doping scandal. we're now just 12 days away from the start of the rio games. nbc 10 is your home for the summer games. karen? >> denise, turning to our forecast, we've got excessive heat and excessive heat warning. that means dang ru conditions.

now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we'll go ahead and take a look at your neighborhood forecast. we reached 95 degrees for a high temperature in philadelphia today. temperatures aren't cooling off at this evening hour. 90 degrees still out in the pennsylvania suburbs, we're about 91 down here in north wildwood on the boardwalk, a lot of folks out there enjoying it. 93 degrees in the lehigh valley. 86 in cool spot. we call this dangerous heat because the humidity is building back into the weather picture for tomorrow. today we had a little bit of a break. the dew points were down just a bit, but that's changing for tomorrow, for everyone across the region. what that means is you want to take it easy between now and tuesday because of the excessive

heat warning, and that means you really exposure outside for any prolonged period could be taxing because it's going to feel more like triple digits. with a higher dew point, it will really be quite sticky starting tomorrow. so neighborhood temperatures still pretty warm out there as we look south and east of philadelphia, we've got mid-80s at the jersey shore not doing too badly. interior south jersey, pick your neighborhood. we're still at 95 in mt. laurel. 89 in lumberton as we travel a little farther north we're still at 95 degrees in hamilton, new jersey. so an excessive heat warning is worth mentioning again because we want to take it easy. heat advisories going into effect tomorrow. guess what? it won't be ceasing any time soon. we'll take you all the way through the entire work week, hot and humid, oppressive conditions, and so you're going to want to take it easy, especially if you have outdoor plans. maybe you're spending your week

at the beach. lucky you. plenty of sunblock and plenty of water. get in the shade if you can. we've got our eye on thunderstorm activity even a storm for the overnight. tomorrow sun comes back into the picture. 99 degrees will feel like over 100 degrees. afternoon thunderstorms a real possibility. we stay warm all the way through. philadelphia, check out this ten-day. we'll stay well above or average high of 87 degrees. it is feeling like the thick of summer for sure. and that humidity isn't going to be taking a break either. at least until we get down to friday towards the end of the week. then we sort of moderate as we get into next weekend. but then look at this. tuesday, wednesday, a ten-day outlook shows us we start bumping back up well above our average high temperature. kind of interesting but feeling a lot like summer. >> 78% of the sanders voters are

already voting for secretary clinton. but we need another 10 or 15%. which will make it harder, not impossible, but harder. i expect senator sanders will give a great speech monday night. that will heal some of the wounds. >> we're at the site of the democratic national convention. you just heard ed rendell there this morning predicting a tough road ahead for hillary clinton who will need bernie sanders supporters to vote in pennsylvania come november. meanwhile, donald trump had a lot to stay on "meet the press" this morning about those leaked e-mails that show dnc staffers favoring clinton over sanders for the party's nomination. take a listen. >> he has been gamed. he has been -- it's a rigged system against him. and what happened with the choice of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody -- i was shocked. i love it, from my standpoint.

>> trump plans to campaign in scranton this week while the dnc's happening here in philly. pennsylvania has become a key battleground state in this election. now, i want to show you our vantage point. nbc 10. at least from here in our suite at the wells fargo center. of course we'll be on the ground. you saw lauren mayk there. over my right shoulder, some delegates will actually have to sit in the stands including our three states, new jersey, delaware and pennsylvania, beyond that gray corridor there, they're actually going to be behind that large platform. difficult to see from here. but over my left shoulder, one thing you can see, the giant stage right there. larger than the rnc counterpart. you just missed paul scion rehearsing "bridge over troubled water." a lot to happen in the day before the democratic national convention kicks off. comcast offering free access to 10,000 wifi hot spots all over
