right now at 11:00, the democratic party dealing with a bombshell hours before the start of the democratic national convention. the chair of the dnc ousted over an e-mail scandal that exposed the seemingly rigged system to help hillary clinton and hurt bernie sanders. controversy is tearing at the image of unity that the democrats were trying to portray tonight on the eve of the dnc. and bernie sanders supporters from around the nation are in philadelphia tonight, furious about the apparent bias. good evening. i'm keith jones live from the wells fargo center, home of the democratic national convention. we are just 17 hours away. as i was saying, my name is keith jones. we're 17 hours away from the

start of the convention. dnc chief debbie wasserman schultz was supposed to gavel in the start of the convention tomorrow afternoon, but there are reports tonight that she might not have that honor. wasserman schultz was also supposed to speak at a p.a. breakfast tomorrow, but we have now learned she is not going to. the bankrupt end of her chairmanship could be creating a huge convention drama. meanwhile, bernie sanders is preparing for his speech in tomorrow's convention. the theme of the night -- out united together. but it follows this e-mail scandal that threatens to tear the party further appeared. andrea klein thomas spoke with sanders supporters about the latest development. andrea, i imagine they're furious. >> reporter: yeah, they are furious, but they're saying this should have happened a lot earlier. now, tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m., democratic leaders will be here at the convention center. they are going to have to field questions about starting this convention with so much drama. then 30 minutes later, around the corner, bernie sanders

delegates will explain what they plan to do next. >> how do you feel that the people fired debbie wasserman schultz? >> reporter: vindication for bernie sanders supporters after debbie wasserman schultz resigns as chairwoman of the democratic national committee. >> i kind of felt like we were pushing against a democratic party that did not want our candidate to succeed. >> reporter: today on "meet the press," sanders echoed his supporters' sentiment. >> we need a democratic party that is open, that's going to bring young people and working people into it, that is going to stand up and take on the big money interests and fight for working families. >> reporter: but for some of the sanders faithful -- >> i thought hillary should step down with her. >> reporter: the e-mail scandal deepens the distress of the democratic party. >> it just shows that the democratic party has no class and they don't represent the millions who believe they represent them. >> reporter: while others say this should serve as a warning that their support wasn't just for a man but a movement. >> his ideals are actually not

crazy left-wing ideals. these are things that resonate with many, many, many voters. >> reporter: despite all of this, bernie sanders still says he's supporting hillary clinton for president. he says his focus is on beating donald trump. reporting live from the convention center, i'm andrea cline-thomas, nbc 10 news. >> andrea, thank you. actress susan surrouarandon brought hollywood power to a protest in germantown. she called for action on climate change and she urged bernie sanders supporters to not give up. this is the final stop of the national tour meant to inspire young people to get involved in the political process. >> we have to stay awake, we have to stay committed, and we're all here today to say that that is the fact. people have come in from all over, from all different groups. stay loud. >> sarandon said even though bernie sanders is out of the race, supporters shouldn't give up their fight for political

change. and while a few celebrities are shuffling in tonight, there are thousands of delegates partying across the city right now, getting prepared for the convention action tomorrow. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins us live from broad street outside of one of the soirees, right? >> reporter: we're at the kimmel convention and thousands are in town tonight, along with family and party officials who went to a number of private parties across the city tonight as city officials gear up for this big week ahead. heavy security on broad street. philadelphia police standing guard as delegates arrive for cocktails at the kimmel center one day before the convention kicks off. >> i'm a democrat, so it's nice to see, you know, my people. >> reporter: across the street, local center city residents taking in the sights of their changing town. >> these barricades that we hit that we weren't expecting, a lot of police out, helicopters. ♪

>> reporter: over at the rocky steps, delegates from every state in the union celebrate. many have been waiting months for this moment, some of them waiting their entire lives for this candidate. >> excited about seeing the first woman elected as president of the united states. >> reporter: meantime, city officials are warning delegates and demonstrators about the excessive heat, near 100 degrees all week, while police are taking extra precautions after recent attacks on law enforcement. >> we are taking some additional security measures to ensure the safety of both the protesters, police, as well as the public. >> all of the weather here is going to be as hot as it is in atlanta, so we'll see how we all make it through. >> reporter: and despite turmoil in the democratic party today, delegates say both bernie and hillary supporters will unite on the convention floor come thursday. >> we can all come together and work as a team, and i'm looking forward to seeing that.

>> reporter: tonight's big parties are wrapping up, delegates headed back to their hotels. on the agenda for tomorrow are morning meetings at the convention center, and of course, tomorrow night, big speeches from bernie sanders and first lady michelle obama down in south philly. live in center city, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> randy, thanks. there were no shortage of protests and rallies on this eve of the democratic national convention. some have already been larger than the biggest protests at the rnc in cleveland last week. you're looking now at hundreds of people marching down broad street in support of bernie sanders earlier tonight. philadelphia police commissioner richard ross says all of the demonstrations thus far have been peaceful. hillary clinton is getting the nod from former new york mayor michael bloomberg here at the dnc. officials say he will endorse clinton and speak at the convention tomorrow. bloomberg is a former democrat turned republican turned independent. according to a senior bloomberg adviser, the former mayor will make a strong case in philadelphia that clinton is the

clear choice in this election. as we've been mentioning, bernie sanders is also set to speak tomorrow along with first lady michelle obama. we'll run through more of what's expected here tomorrow coming up at 11:15. for now, let's go back inside to the nbc 10 studios and denise kna nakano. >> we'll be bringing you our newscasts live from the kimmel center live from the dnc. count on our specials tomorrow night at 7:00. 250 tons worth of extra air conditioning equipment will be running here at the wells fargo center tomorrow to try to keep delegates cool in the potentially record-breaking heat. this arena ran into some heat issues on peak nights of the republican national convention back in the year 2000. meteorologist karen thomas is timing out the sweltering temperatures in the first alert neighborhood forecast. karen, it will be super hot and super humid. >> like the way you say super hot, super humid. for sure, denise.

and let's hope that there are no problems with the air conditioning, especially tomorrow. an excessive heat warning for the city of philadelphia and surrounding counties here in the pink until tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., and the heat advisories will go into effect tomorrow for everywhere else. so, very hot, very humid tomorrow. we'll get to the actual temperatures for tomorrow, startling, for sure. 82 degrees right now in philadelphia, so not cooling off much in the city. temperature will drop to the upper 70s overnight. we are in the upper 70s out here in coatesville, 81 right now in wilmington, still 81 degrees in allentown. and the humidity will actually be building as we move through the overnight into early tomorrow. the record tomorrow in philadelphia, 96 degrees, set in 1999. that's the number to beat. we're looking for a projected high tomorrow of 99 degrees, so very good chance that we will beat the record. today we stopped 95, but it felt more like 98 degrees. that's what we mean by the heat index. so, for tomorrow, if we get to 99 degrees, which is likely, tomorrow outdoors, it's going to

secret service's virtual model of the dnc. >> we take thousands of photographs. >> reporter: bob langham's team built it. it's almost as detailed as the real thing. >> for example, there is the exit and the stairs. that's the correct number of stairs. >> reporter: dozens of agents, including those on the president's protective detail, won't be able to get here before the convention. they use the model to prepare. >> to have the ability to see the route that the president's going to travel in to see the gate that he's going to come through, the door that he's going to walk through or the route that he's going to walk through to get to the stage. it's an invaluable tool. >> reporter: it shows the perimeter fencing that will line broad street, the area between citizens bank park and xfinity live, and behind the convention under i-95. you can go inside the wells fargo center, too. philly police also trained here at the secret service training center in maryland. we were there but not allowed to record the training due to security concerns. but the secret service released an edited version of the

training only to nbc 10. it shows agents training for an assault on the wells fargo center. a motorcade ambush and the simple medical emergency. >> it's a larger scale, but it's not different because we deal and train for this type of stuff. that's why we're here. >> the nbc 10 investigators were given exclusive access as s.w.a.t. officers like sergeant joe mcdonald trained with the pennsylvania state police, the fbi and the secret service. >> what do you expect for the dnc? >> to be honest, i really don't know. i think in light of what's been going on the last week, there's got potential to be a problem. >> reporter: more than 200 officers and agents spent the day making sure when this model turns into the real thing, it's as smooth as they practiced. now, all of this security costs a lot of extra money. the city of philadelphia will get more than $40 million from the federal government. the city will also hire private security to help secure the area outside of the secret service's perimeter. for the investigators, i'm mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. >> so, here's a look at what's

happening tomorrow here at the wells fargo center. the day gets started at 10:00 a.m. with several caucus and council meetings. at 4:30, it's the gavel in for the dnc. the list of speakers includes clinton's former opponent during the primary run, senator bernie sanders, first lady michelle obama will deliver the keynote address to close out the night. we'll broadcast live from the wells fargo center tomorrow and every day at the dnc. we'll also bring you a one-hour special, "nbc 10 live at the democratic national convention" starts tomorrow night at 7:00. and of course, the dnc's causing some disruptions to everyday life in philadelphia. denise nakano has more on that. >> keith it may be a long ride to work on i-95. get ready for delays this week if i-95 is part of your daily travel through south philadelphia. traffic restrictions will be in effect on 95 north approaching exit 13 and south approaching exit 22. one lane in each direction will

be closed. now, this is video from today that shows the lane closures. police are enforcing a 5-ton commercial truck restriction in that area. you can track all the road closures the dnc is causing with the nbc 10 app. and the heat wasn't helping the situation on roads today. skyforce10 over the washington avramp to 95 north. officials were forced to shut it down when the road buckled under the intense heat. crews were on scene to make the necessary repairs. and that heat is only going to get more intense tomorrow when we could break a temperature record as that humidity goes back up again. and for the sweltering details, let's get to the first alert neighborhood forecast with meteorologist karen thomas. karen? >> all right, denise. yes, hopefully, everybody has a plan for a cool place tomorrow, because the heat and humidity will be building as we make our way through our monday. right now, temperatures really not cooling off too quickly. 80 degrees right now in the burbs. it's 82 in center city, 79 down

84 degrees in society hill and 82 degrees right now in pennsport. so, as i was saying, i want to show you again, the excessive heat warning is for all the areas here in pink, and that means you really shouldn't expose yourself outdoors for too long, especially if you're in sort of a severe breathing group. elderly, young children, you want to take it easy. we're going to have heat advisories in effect across the region tomorrow simply to alert people that it is going to be dangerously hot and humid. and guess what? the heat and humidity really stay with us as we move all the way through the beginning of our workweek. you can see the seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen, and it lets you know that we will stay in the 90s with the humidity all the way through. so, here's a look at your ten-day for philadelphia. and tomorrow we are looking for a high temperature of 99 degrees. as we get to 99, we will break our record. we're looking for late-day storms, early evening storms. as we get to tuesday, we sort of

the road to rio won't be completely without russian athletes next month. the international olympic committee is not imposing a blanket ban on russian athletes over the nation's doping record. the ioc says it's leaving it up to global sports federations to decide which russian athletes to accept in their sport. the country is dealing with allegations of widespread, state-sponsored doping. russia's track & field athletes have already been banned from the rio games over the doping scandal. athletes and delegations have started to arrive at the olympic village in rio de janeiro amid complaints about the buildings. the australian team said they will not move into their assigned accommodations. they cited problems, including blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring. the first australian athletes have been living in nearby hotels. massive crowds turned out as the olympic torch relay passed through sao paulo, brazil, today. huge crowds ran with the torch

of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody. i was shocked. i love it from my standpoint. >> reporter: a new online poll of key battleground states shows a bit of a bounce for trump. his supporters rose to 42%, one point ahead of clinton. while trump wasn't impressed with clinton's vp pick, most delegates like kaine. the running mates appeared on "60 minutes," where they differed on donald trump attacking the presumptive democratic nominee as "crooked hillary." >> i don't call him anything, and i'm not going to engage in that kind of insults fest that he seems to thrive on. >> when i see this, you know, "crooked hillary" or i see the "lock her up," it is just ridiculous. it is ridiculous. >> clinton said at the rnc, the republicans offered no positive agenda and presented "a very dark, divisive campaign."

"nbc 10 live at the democratic national convention" starts tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. and now to some other headlines we're following tonight. police in germany say they've arrested a 16-year-old friend of the gunman who killed nine people friday in munich. police say the afghan teen may have known about his friend's plans before he went on his shooting spree. police are saying the gunman was a deranged german-iranian who was fixated with mass killings but not inspired by islamic extremism. a makeshift memorial is growing outside the shopping mall where the attack took place. some 1,500 people gathered at the scene, lighting cannedals,

placing flowers in tribute to the victims. well, flames lit up the night in santa clarita, california, as the deadly sand fire swept through the dry hills. still burning after two days, the inferno has consumed more than 35 square miles. one person was killed in the brush fire. 1,500 homes had to be evacuated. more details tonight about a firefighter who died on the job last night. philadelphia fire commissioner adam teal says gabriel lee was a veteran who earned the respect of his fellow firefighters over his 20-year career with the department. >> the best way to say that is around 1:00 in the morning last night or this morning at temple, we had more than 100 firefighters there. the mayor was there, on-duty, off-duty to say good-bye. so, it's still early, and certainly, we will provide information to everybody. when we have more information to provide. >> but how gabriel lee died is still not clear tonight. sources telling nbc 10 the

42-year-old was found unresponsive in the basement of ladder company 12 in north philadelphia last night. he was pronounced dead at temple hospital. the department says it's still investigating. a big show of support for police in delaware continues to grow tonight. hundreds have been coming to cabela's at the christiana mall to write messages of love and support for local police officers. the banner went up yesterday morning. we're told it's been so popular, they may need to put up a second banner. cabela's plans to give it to delaware state police on behalf of police across the state. from the nbc 10 jersey shore bureau, some high-level support today for striking workers at the taj mahal. now, this was the scene on the boardwalk today as hundreds of workers made their rounds outside the taj mahal. they were joined today by members of congress, including pennsylvania representative

brendan boyle and new jersey representative donald norcross. they're calling on owner carl icahn to settle the strike. according to the striking workers, they had seen less than $1 raise over the past 12 years. there will be no strike for new jersey transit workers. "the record" reports unions representing conductors and engineers have signed their contracts with the company over this weekend. they were the last of 11 rail unions to do so. the unions had been working without a contract for about five years. the group opposed to a new stadium near temple's campus in north philadelphia held a rally at a local church tonight. hundreds of local and national activists joined the stadium stompers for a meeting tonight at the historic church of the advocate. members of the group shared their concerns about the proposed stadium project, including increased traffic, parking and other issues. temple university's president, neil theobald

it's the first of a week's worth of events for delegates at the church. and tomorrow begins part two of the tale of two conventions, as we'll call it, philadelphia versus cleveland. philly gets to show its month of preparations for the dnc tomorrow, three days after cleveland finished playing host to the rnc. nbc 10's down at the floor here at the wells fargo center to show you the differences between the two high-profile setups. >> reporter: we're down on the floor of the democratic national vension and i want to show you where our local delegates will be sitting and the view they'll have. first of all, this is pennsylvania. now, look how close they are to the stage. got a really, really good seat. that's the stage up there. and behind that podium, those are actually doors. you can't tell the way they're closed right now, but we saw them opening and closing earlier. now, let me take you back from pennsylvania. if you go around here, i'm going

us now what was a hardwood floor for the sixers or ice for the flyers. yeah, the democrats have taken over here, and we have got you covered. count on nbc 10. for now, live in south philadelphia, keith jones, nbc 10 news. all right, keith, thank you. well, the dnc delegates and anybody going down in and around the area of the dnc, really going to have to battle the heat, especially tomorrow. temperatures not cooling off very quickly. this evening it's currently 82 degrees in philadelphia, 81 still in allentown. we've got 81 in wilmington. a little cooler in vineland at 75 degrees. and we're watching just this little blip on radar here. this started out as a fairly strong system to the west, but as it pushed to the east, it sort of is dying out. and we could get a few, little isolated showers moving through the area through the overnight, but that doesn't look like a big deal, and guess what, it's not expected to cool us off any. more heat and humidity building

in for tomorrow. as that heat and humidity builds tomorrow for our monday, yes, very tropicallike elements in place, a very unstable atmosphere. and so, right about 2:00, we do expect this particular weather model showing a line of rain storm cells setting up. could have some convection embeed there. and then pushing right on through, this is here 5:30. we've got some potentially severe cells in there with thunder and lightning, strong winds. so, we'll keep an eye on out for tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours, leaving behind clouds for monday into tuesday with some residual shower activity, but then it will clear out for tuesday. excessive heat warning in effect for tomorrow until 6:00 p.m. for all the area here in the pink, and then the orange indicating heat advisory. that will go into effect for the entire region tomorrow. and boathouse row all decorated in red, white and blue to welcome the dnc, and this is our temperature reading right now. 82 in philadelphia.

we'll drop just a bit. temperatures overnight, we are looking for them to be in the mid to upper 70s. so, humidity will be building as we move through the overnight hours. waking up tomorrow morning, if you step out early, you will feel dew points on the rise. so, we'll give you the ten-day forecast. 99 degrees in philadelphia. that's what we're shooting for for a high temperature tomorrow, but you add in the humidity, it's going to feel more like 105 tomorrow. so, really, if you can stay indoors, take the heat seriously. you don't want to exert yourself too much or stay outdoors for too long tomorrow because we have that excessive heat warning. we'll drop down little bit on tuesday, 96 degrees. 94 by wednesday. but look at this, we stay in the lower 90s all the way through the rest of the. we get a cold front that comes in thursday into friday and that could kick off some storms. it isn't until next weekend that we get back to normal high temperatures of about 87 degrees. >> all right, karen. thank you. listen to this, a local kid's birthday surprise is going

tonight, philadelphia's showing off its patriotic spirit ahead of the dnc. you're looking live at boathouse row, which is lit up in red, white and blue to welcome dnc delegates. it's thanks to brand-new lighting at the iconic site. and 30th street station is also putting on a patriotic light show tonight. this installation will continue on the 29th street facade every night this month as thousands of travelers in and out for the dnc. and a busy scene at philadelphia international, as hundreds of delegates and their families arrived ahead of the dnc. a welcome crew was on hand to greet them and show them some of the interactive displays on hand. and we caught up with two delegates from the state of texas, who said that they're looking forward to the events this week. >> i'm looking forward to seeing the message of unity that senator sanders delivers to the national convention. >> so, this is a brand-new experience for us. just getting into the airport and everything has been a journey on its own.

>> they are two of the youth delegates who are participating in the convention. now, one of those delegates is about to attend her 16th democratic convention. she's an 85-year-old clinton superdelegate from california who's been attending these events 1952. nbc's lester holt has her story. >> this is president row in my den. >> reporter: she vividly recalls her first democratic convention. >> well, it was 1952, and i was very excited. i was a 22-year-old at that time. i was the youngest person in the convention hall. and there was a little fuss over that. >> reporter: she hasn't missed a convention since, except the raucous 1968 gathering in chicago. >> my husband went, and he kept saying, there's rioting in the streets, i'm glad you're not here. >> reporter: this week will mark roz's 16th convention. she's seen a lot of history along the way, and this one she knows won't disappoint.
