the wells fargo center where the democratic national convention officially kicks off today. check out this downcountdown clock. we're 12 hours away from the start of the convention. over the next three hours, we'll tell you about everything happening here at the wells fargo center on the first day of the convention, plus things you can do across philadelphia. >> plus, a behind look at where delegates will be sitting here at the wells fargo center. first, we have issued a first alert today because of the dangerous heat çahead. let's get a look at that with meteorologist bill henley, a close look at communities across new jersey, delaware and pennsylvania. >> we're dealing with storms, big storms moving in from the west. these are moving to the east right now. about 25 miles an hour with very heavy rainfall. you can see it's moving towards, just to the north of waft chester area and this motion will continue which has it in west chester by 11 minutes after 4:00 and norristown, just after 4:30 this morning. lots of lightning, heavy downpours and potentially

schultz said she will resign after the democratic national convention. it was suggested that wasserman schultz's committee favored hillary clinton over bernie sanders. clinton said i want to thank my longtime friend debbie wasserman schultz. i am grateful for getting the democratic party to this year's historic convention in philadelphia. i know this week's events will a success thanks to her hard work. i look forward to campaigning with debbie in florida. as president i will need fighters in debbie like congress who are ready on day one to get to work for the american people. the republicans offered this response. >> when you rig a system and you spread e-mails around with each other and senior staff in that manner, i think this kind of outcome is inevitable. >> gop presidential nominee

donald trump tweeted the highly neurotic debbie wasserman schultz is angry that after stealing and cheating her way to a crooked hillary victory, she's out. interest in what bernie sanders will say at the democratic national convention is growing. >> the theme is united together. analyst say wasserman's schultz is vindication for many sanders supporters. many are here in philadelphia to stage protests at the convention.ç we spoke to them yesterday about the same time the vermont senator was reacting on nbc's "meet the press." listen. >> you node a democratic party that is open, that will bring young and working people into it, that will stand up and take on the big money and fight for working families. >> it shows the democratic party has no class and they don't represent the millions who believe they represent them. >> despite the scandal, sanders said he'll continue to support hillary clinton for president

and focus on beating donald trump. >> protesters backing bernie sanders rallied in philadelphia last night. some of the demonstrations were larger than the biggest protests at the republican convention in cleveland last week. these are hundreds of pro-sanders supporters marching down broad street. police commissioner richard ross said all of the demonstrations were peaceful. the protesters and police kept their cool in the sweltering heat. >> now it's time for the delegates and v.i.p.s to chill. some 250 tons worth of extra air conditioning equipment will be delivered to the wells fargo center today. starting today, the eyes of the nation and beyond will be on philadelphia. >> when the democratic convention begins this afternoon, bernie sanders and michelle obama will be among the first to address the delegates. matt delucia is live on independence mall with a closer look at what's happening tonight. matt? >> a lot more humid than it

probably is over there inside the wells fargo center. a lot will be happening here later on today. last time we had a political convention here in philadelphia, it was 16 years ago. and, of course, the stage is set for another. take a look behind me here. we have the nbc news set up here right at independence mall. this is where the "today" show and msnbc will have part of their broadcast. there will be things happening here in old city, also at the convention center and the wells fargo center throughout the week. one of bigger events today, we've been talking about all morning, a special by first lady michelleç obama. she'll be speaking at the wells fargo center about the role that the president plays in the lives of children and shaping their future and why hillary clinton cowling the best person to fill that role. many of the delegates arrived over the weekend. we spoke with some of the people who waited to see the transformation of the wells fargo center, including the mayor who is waiting for history to be made in philadelphia with the first female presidential nominee.

>> this is a city of firsts, first in democracy, first in libraries, fire departments. we go on and on and on. this will be the first here. >> it's just an overwhelming feeling of excitement and, you know, i just really glad i got a chance to do this. >> we've also talked about some of the protests that have been going on so far throughout the weekend and how they've already been larger than what we saw in cleveland last week. one protest that's expected to happen later on at 11:30, a pro bernie sanders rally, the people's platform, they're expected to start their march from camden and go over the ben franklin bridge. again, we've also been mentioning that bernie sanders is expected to speak later on tonight. a lot of the protests that we have seen on the schedule for later on this week also are pro bernie sanders rally. interesting to see what he has to say. >> certainly a lot to come

of this. it's a tremendous amount of rain to be falling out of the sky at one time. it's passing west vincent, passing the phoenixville area, on the way to hatfield, gwynett this morning. by 5:00 this morning, those are in philadelphia and heading into new jersey and quickly move offshore. we get a break from the storms until later this afternoon. at 2:00 this afternoon, you can see storms redeveloping, blowing in from the west. that's 3:30 today and for your afternoon and evening commute, potential of another round of heavy showers and thunderstorms with heavy downpours and strong, gusty winds. in between the storms, we get the heat and the humidity. upper 90s for center city in somerton. look at the feels like temperatures. 105 this afternoon, 100 for lansdale, allentown will feel like 101 this afternoon. new jersey, interior new jersey 96 degrees in hamilton township. will feel like 103.

4:14. good morning, live from the wells fargo center at the democratic national convention begins here in less than 12 hours. >> we are in our broadcast booth overlooking the floor of the wells fargo center and nbc 10's keith jones is on the floor showing us what's different between the setup here and what we saw in cleveland for the rnc g. morning, i'm keith jones on the floor of the wells fargo center which looks a little different. usually it's the hard wood of the sixers or the ice of the flyers. now it's blue, blue carpeting with be blue for the democratic national convention. pennsylvania's representative right here, the state delegates will be seated here on the floor. new jersey, delaware, they'll be in the stands this time around. take a look at this çstage. it is much larger than its rnc counterpart. you can see the gigantic bank of monitors. they all change. the background in fact changes behind the podium. throughout this morning we will be bringing you behind the scenes here at the dnc, here at the wells fargo center, south philly playing host to at least

50,000 delegates and so many more supporters. we'll send it back inside to you. >> many of those delegates and supporters arrived here in philadelphia over the weekend. >> take a look at the busy scene yesterday at philadelphia international airport. a welcome crew greeted delegates and their families and showed the visitors some of the interactive displays in use. we spoke with two delegates from texas who said they're looking forward to the events this week. >> i'm looking forward to seeing the message of unity that senator sanders deliveries to the national convention. >> this is a brand new experience for us, just getting into the airport and everything has been a journey on its own. >> they are two of the youth delegates participating at the convention. former vice president al gore will be a no-show at the dnc. his spokesperson said he can't attend because of obligations in tennessee where gore lives. gore skipped the 2012 convention after speaking at the two

previous dncs. republican nominee donald trump will be in pennsylvania this week, he'll be trying to steal some of hillary clinton's thunder in one of the top battleground states. he plans to visit lackawanna college in scranton on wednesday. he blasted clinton's choice of virginia senator tim kaine as her running mate. >> what happened with the choice of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody -- i was shocked. i love it from my standpoint. >> a new online poll of key battleground states shows a bounce for trump. his support is up to 42%, oneç point ahead of clinton's. hear from hillary clinton and tim kaine. find their their reaction to what donald trump said about her at the rnc plus those lock her up chants. now let's check in with nbc 10's katy zachry, closer look at some of the other stories

happening today. katy, you have breaking news this morning. >> vai and tracy, we do have breaking news out of ft. myers, florida. we're following nfc that 17 people have been shot, two are dead. police are at three different locations right now. the first call came in just before 1:00 this morning at a nightclub, then two more reports of shots fired came from two different roads in that area. we are gathering more information and we'll bring it to you as soon as we get it. you can also tap the nbc 10 app for instant updates on this breaking news story. new this morning, three men are being questioned by philadelphia police after a deadly shooting and chase. philadelphia -- [ no audio ] found a man laying next to an suv. he was shot a number of times in the back of the head. and he died later at the hospital. other officers were able to chase down the three men initially seen running and they were arrested.

right now, a marine unit is searching for a gun in the delaware river. they are talking to witnesses and combing through surveillance video from businesses and nearby traffic cameras. this chain reaction crash at least 28 people were hospitalized when a septa bus, a tractor-trailer and at least two cars collided. skyforce 10 was over providence road and lansdowne avenue in yeadon just after 6:00 last night. investigators say the bus slammed into an suv that pulled out of the driveway and hit the truck. two pedestrians are the most seriously hurt in that. this morning, we still don't know how a philadelphiaç firefighter died on the job this weekend. what we do know is that gabriel lee was a 20-year veteran of the department and was well respected and loved by his colleagues.

fire commissioner adam diehl says there was a major show of support. >> the may he was there, on duty, off duty to say good-bye. it's still early. we'll provide information to everybody when we have more information to provide. >> sources tell nbc 10 the 42-year-old was found unresponsive in the basement of ladder company 12 in north philadelphia saturday night. he was pronounced dead at temple hospital. today, septa adds positive train control to its chestnut hill line. the safety feature will regulate the distance between trains and make sure collisions don't happen at track crossover locations. ptc also prevents speeding and keachs workers on the side of the track safe. it is being added on all of septa's regional rail lines. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we're tracking very heavy

thunderstorms this morning. these storms are racing through the suburbs right now into montgomery county. look at the lightning, into chester county. the very heavy rainfall, the rain is coming down at a rate within these storms of almost ten inches per hour. this could lead to localized flooding. the good news is these are on move. no one area will get 10 inches or 5 inches out of this. it's a tremendous amount of rain that could lead to flash flooding first thing this morning and some damaging winds as well. it's heading towards philadelphia. in fact, it's minutes away from philadelphia. it is dropping the temperatures for the suburbs but they will recover and we'll see these numbers warm from the 70s this morning into the 90s this afternoon. and it looks like it's upper 90s today. in fact, today it's goingç to the hottest of our hot weather stretch. look at these temperatures soaring in philadelphia by 1:00 this afternoon. 104 is what it will feel like while the actual temperature is 94 degrees, then up to 96

degrees. maybe even a little bit hotter this afternoon. it will feel like a very steamy day today. it's why we're still under a first alert for dangerous heat for pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, today and again tomorrow for high heat and high humidity, it will feel like 100 to 105 degrees this afternoon. and then this afternoon, another round of strong showers and thunderstorms for philadelphia, the suburbs and the lehigh valley. and with that can come some damaging winds and localized flooding as well. delaware, 78 degrees at 7:00. 90 degrees by 11:00 and new jersey into the 90s this afternoon. watch out for those storms later today. at the shore, near 90 degrees at 3:00 today. and the heat continues. the ten-day on ten shows the temperatures climbing into the 90s for tomorrow and wednesday, through thursday, friday and then finally we get a break on saturday, 88 degrees. the high temperature, 80s for much of next week.

hey, everybody, i'm first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. i've had a lot of questions so far. what's going to be happening in terms of traffic for the dnc in philadelphia this week. there will be closures and restrictions of course. they began friday around 8:00 p.m. they'll last until midday on friday on the 29th. commercial vehicles weighing five tons or more will also be restricted from driving a nine-mile stretch of 95 through exit 13 through exit 22. there will nobody real or full, complete highway closures but there will be restrictions. 95 to broad street will be closed on and off during this time. traffic around the area, ramp from norristown road to route 309, has an accident. 95 throughout delaware, no big problem or delays. 11 minutes at the most southbound from 295 to 495.
