the democrats as well. >> in a lot of ways. steamy here and as you mention a lot going on in the democratic party with the abrupt resignation with the head of the democratic party. that's going on. a new poll shows trump leading the race. that same poll had him many points behind clinton just a week ago. we're here at independent mall in front of the historic independent hall. a city steeped in history. about 20 minutes south of here is the wells fargo center which is where the actual convention will be held over the next four nights. in case you were wondering, the declaration of independence was signed right there at the wells fargo center in 1776. i've been studying my facts. >> you got mixed up there. most of it is right. savannah, we'll be back with you in a second. let's talk about breaking news overnight. another deadly shooting at a florida nightclub. this time in ft. myers. nbc's kerry sanders has made his way to the scene. kerry, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, matt.

the authorities are looking very closely. at this point there are no strong indications that this is terrorism related but rather it appears to be a shooting at a bar here in ft. myers. a bar known as club blu. of course this all comes just six weeks after 49 people were killed and 53 were injured in orlando at the pulse nightclub, which of course means that we have another florida community on edge this morning. terrifying moments overnight as gunfire erupted at a nightclub in ft. myers, florida. >> shots fired. club blu. 30, 40 shots. >> people are scattering. >> reporter: police responding to the shooting in the parking lot of club blu bar and grill shortly after midnight and found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds. two people died and at least 14 others were shot with injuries ranging from minor to life threatening. authorities say three people have been detained for

questioning. one of them five blocks away from the nightclub where shots were fired. this morning police say the motive is still unknown and they are actively canvassing the area looking for other persons who may have been involved in this incident. so authorities here are still sorting out details of what happened. we do know at the club blu they were having what's called a teen night and so there was no carding, underage people were allowed here. they're trying to get to the bottom of what happened here. at this point it does not appear to be terrorism related. matt? >> kerry sanders, two dead, 14 others at least injured. thank you very much. let's go back to savannah now in philadelphia. >> all right, matt. ahead of today's start of the democratic national convention there is a new poll out this morning as we mentioned that shows donald trump getting a big bump from the republican convention in cleveland. take a look at these new numbers. trump now leading hillary clinton 48 to 45. clinton led in that poll by seven points just a week ago.

and the convention is kicking off amid controversy. debbie wasserman-schultz announcing her plans to step down unexpectedly. nbc's andrea mitchell is here with the latest. andrea, good to see you in philly. >> the convention was supposed to open with the theme united together but the party shake-up proves it may be anything but. bernie sanders supporters marching in philadelphia demanding revolution. what they got was a stunning resignation under pressure of congresswoman debbie wasserman-schultz. the party chair will step down once the convention is over. only 24 hours earlier she was headlining the miami rollout of the new clinton/kaine ticket now taking a fall for dnc e-mails released by wikileaks.

one e-mail from wasserman-schultz says sanders isn't going to be president. another from a staffer suggesting they play up that sanders is not a religious jew writing i think i read he's an atheist. that could make several points difference. clinton disavowing to "60 minutes" any knowledge of the embarrassing messages. >> i didn't know anything about it. i haven't read any of those. i am adamantly opposed to anyone bringing religion into our political process. >> reporter: the sanders campaign saying party leaders must be impartial during the primaries and this year were not. >> clearly what we experienced during the campaign was some real bias and i think the chairwoman did the right thing. >> reporter: another sore spot for sanders who will speak at the convention tonight, clinton's choice of tim kaine. >> his political views are not my political views. he's more conservative than i am. >> reporter: kaine in an interview with telemundo conducted mostly in spanish tried to smooth over their differences.

>> after a campaign there will be bruised feelings. i've been through campaigns and felt that way. >> reporter: donald trump tweeting the democrats are in a total meltdown. after the republicans bashed clinton for a week, she told "60 minutes" -- >> i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had. there was no positive agenda. it was very dark, divisive campaign. >> when i see this crooked hillary or i see the lock her up, it's ridiculous. it's ridiculous. >> reporter: democrats are going to start fighting back tonight with the party's best speakers along with bernie sanders, michelle obama and keynoter elizabeth warren. bill clinton tomorrow and then the president and vice president wednesday and former republican, mayor mike bloomberg noticeably not showing up former vice president al gore. >> we'll see you all week. thank you. new jersey senator cory booker is scheduled to speak at the convention tonight.

senator, good to see you. steamy philadelphia. >> i know. >> what's going on with the party. was it the correct decision for debbie wasserman-schultz to resign? >> she did the right thing for the party moving forward. we need to unify and not a lightning rod for controversy. >> she plans to address the delegates. should she or is that not a moment like what we saw with ted cruz at the republican convention last week? >> i don't know the details of how that will play out. my hope is that we'll show america who we are which is two candidates, bernie sanders and hillary clinton have come together and focused on leading america in a unified way. >> to push you on it, do you have an opinion about whether or not it would be productive to her to take the stage? do you worry about a moment that shows anything but unity? >> i think the reason she resigned was to take that off the table. i think that she's going to do the right thing by the party.

i really believe that she's not trying to be a point of division. i hope how the details work out, they'll work out in a way that benefits our party unity. >> do you think this whole e-mail scandal which shows that the dnc had its finger on the scale for hillary clinton, does that affect and disturb this fragile party unity? >> i played in lots of basketball games where i felt like referees were benefiting the other team. doesn't stop the hard fought competitors. these were two people that ran a great campaign. secretary clinton got millions of more votes. bernie sanders voice and issues were integrated in this agenda. i've seen her incorporate bernie sanders ideas and one of the things i'll talk about and pillars for me who worked alongside bernie sanders and elizabeth warren making college more affordable are things we see as major pillars of our campaign and a good thing. great contest of ideas and in many ways it was a melding of

our party. >> before i leave this topic, hillary clinton's campaign manager said something interesting on a show yesterday that he thinks the russians who were accused of actually being behind this hack are trying to influence the american election because they're hacking into dnc e-mails but not into rnc e-mails. do you have any information or opinion on that? >> i have no information or no idea. right now i'm not worried about russians. biggest threat to america i see right now is donald trump's candidacy and what that will do to our country. >> a new poll out this morning shows that trump got a convention bounce. it shows him up three points. a ten-point swing. he was behind seven points in that poll a week ago. are you nervous? >> i'm not nervous. this is early polls i've seen them go all kind of ways. this is a time where our country will have to choose which way we want to go. republicans offer a dark view of america. a lot of negativity. we need to elevate our country

as we face challenges abroad and here at home and we need to be united and strong as a country and not a candidate in office that will demean people because of their religion. that's what concerns me right now. >> you were a finalist to be vp. could have been you on the stage on wednesday night. what was that process like? are you disappointed? >> i'm really happy to be in the conversation. my mom has a saying behind every successful child is an astonished parent. my mom was astonished i was in the conversation. it's nice that happened. >> we'll look for you tonight. thank you very much. appreciate it. let's bring in chuck todd and steve karn aky. let's talk about this. the story line they wouldn't want. did debbie wasserman-schultz have her hand forced? >> 100%. i'm old enough to remember when republicans had a unity problem.

as in last week. the only good news about this for democrats, bernie sanders representative told me that the best thing that could happen was her resignation. sanders' team may be satisfied they got her resignation but we need to find out what sanders delegates are going to respond. that's what we'll find out at 4:00 today. >> we don't know whether she'll gavel in the convention in front of those delegates. whether she plans to address the delegates still. you can have a real moment on the floor. >> that's the thing. in talking to the sanders delegates out in the streets yesterday, they are happen she's resigning. you put her on that stage today, they're not sitting on their hands. she said in that statement that she intends not to just gavel the contention to order but to address the delegates. there's still time for her to reconsider and time for somebody to get in her ear and say you might want to think about what that's going to look like.

if she thinks that's what she can get out of this, i gave a speech this convention, it's going to be a scene. >> she has a primary by somebody sanders supported, that moment being booed at the convention, it's a tv ready to be made. >> people think this is inside politics. what's the bottom line? if dnc had been more impartial, would that have made a difference for bernie sanders? >> i asked the sanders campaign. do you believe this cost you the nomination? nobody will go that far. but you know what? go back. remember the primary calendar and debate calendar and the fact that the republicans were looking for prime time venues, democrats were looking for saturday morning cartoon venues. i'm being a little facetious. you go back there and you can't help but wonder if you're a sanders person what if the debates had been a bigger deal. could i have got traction sooner? you never know. >> what does hillary clinton

been shaken by a fourth attack in the past week. this time an apparent suicide bombing near a music festival. officials say a 27-year-old syrian who had been denied asylum blew himself up. the bomber's request was rejected a year ago but allowed to remain in germany because of the strife in syria. the attack comes just two days after a gunman killed nine people at a mall in munich. to an out of control wildfire that's raging north of los angeles. it's already destroyed nearly two dozen homes and forced thousands of residents from their homes. nbc's gadi schwartz is on the front lines. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a lot of people sleeping in their cars in parking lots this morning. this fire already forced evacuation of hundreds. it's claimed the life of one and even at this early hour,

helicopters are up on the ridge making water drops trying to save more homes. in the hillside towns north of los angeles, another sleepless night. hundreds watching a ridge as it turned into a wall of flame. >> it's like a war zone here. you can't stop looking. >> the so-called sand fire churning through brushed at an incredible speed nowhere close to contained. >> it's like someone threw a switch. all of a sudden the winds changed and picked up by 20 to 30 miles an hour. >> reporter: hundreds have been evacuated and homes are burning. so far at least 18 houses have been destroyed while firefighters and homeowners have saved hundreds of others from devastation. >> another five minutes. >> reporter: evacuees protect what cannot be replaced. >> no time to wait for a trailer. got to get them out now. >> reporter: some of the scenes surreal. the roads look like a drive

through hell. choppers hauling water through bright yellow skies. back on the front lines, crews fight through constantly shifting smoke and flames as a town watches and waits. the only certainty, another day of fire ahead. and this fire is only 10% contained with fire crews saying realistically it will likely be friday before this thing is under control. there is no rain in the forecast. matt? >> gadi schwartz, thank you very much. shaping up to be another week of dangerously high temperatures across a big portion of the country. al is off today. dylan is here. >> out west it's hot and dry. everywhere else it's hot and extremely humid. that's what's going to make it so dangerous. when you have humidity in the air, your body can't cool off the way you want it to. we have 53 million people under some sort of excessive heat warning or heat advisory. that includes 15 states.

it's 7:30 now. monday morning. 25th of july, 2016. we have a crowd starting the week with us in rockefeller plaza. they're happy because matt is back in new york holding down the fort. by the way, we're here at independence hall here in philadelphia. this is where the democratic national convention kicks off today and those are six of my closest friends, matt. i expect big crowds when you come later this week. >> it's early. the people attending the convention are just arriving in philadelphia. i was listening before on our in-house audio system and i heard you asking for a look at the liberty bell. have you found it? >> i did. i wanted to compare my current size to the liberty bell.

>> did you find it on ground level in that building there? >> there's a big crack, did you know that? let us set the scene in this historic city. we're here on independence mall downtown philly five miles north of the wells fargo center. that's where the actual convention is taking place. it's normally home to the philadelphia flyers and the 76ers but this week the democrats have the floor. just like we saw at the rnc, each night of the convention has a theme. supposed to showcase the clinton's campaign vision of a united america. tonight's theme, united together focusing on struggles and future of american families and there are some heavy hitters among the speakers tonight. senator elizabeth warren, first lady michelle obama and vermont senator bernie sanders and of course sanders supporters will be a major headliner at the dnc all week long. this morning republican nominee donald trump is trying to court sanders voters while weighing in on a number of things including hillary clinton's choice for a running mate. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is on the convention

floor with that part of the story. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. we've now moved up into the stands next to the vermont delegation seats. this of course is bernie sanders' home state. his appeal has grown wider than that. as sanders gets prepared to take the stage tonight, what he says could go a long way to bringing together the democratic party even as donald trump tries to stoke the party's visions. after trying to unite his own party, donald trump look to rile up sanders supporters. >> the choice of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody. i was shocked. i love it from my standpoint. >> reporter: trump unleashing a weekend tweet storm predicting sanders' supporters will fight. kaine stands for the opposite. the kaine pick is a sore spot for progressives. >> his political views are not my political views. he's more conservative than i

am. >> reporter: still trump is hardly the kill them with kindness strategy. >> just like it was rigged against bernie sanders. >> reporter: ripping into him as exhausted, weak and pathetic. a recent poll found 11% back trump. 76% for clinton including sanders himself. >> my job is to see that donald trump is defeated and hillary clinton is elected. >> reporter: trump now taking sides in another public battle defending roger ailes who is accused of sexually harassing at least two dozen women. accusations ailes denies. >> it's very sad. he's a good person. i found him to be a very good person. >> reporter: already facing a major deficit with female voters, trump questions the accusers' credibility. >> when they write books recently released saying wonderful things about him and now they say horrible things

about him. >> trump is teasing about a potential ailes partnership. >> a lot of people think he'll run my campaign. >> reporter: donald trump has not said whether or not a lot of people are right. as for bernie sanders, what's best needed to help unify the party may have just happened. at least according to sanders' campaign manager jeff weaver. he says that's the resignation of party chair debbie wasserman-schultz and that may bring bernie delegates over and more inclined to support hillary clinton. savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. let's go back to chuck todd on this whole issue. trump has not exactly been subtle. he's going after these sanders' voters. there's a subscat -- subcategory of those voters. >> it's not about being upset at the party. he's trying to woo them on an issue and trump said it, trade. if you look, that's where there was common ground.

and that is where there is sort of a similar message which is, hey, globalization has been bad for america. sanders was making a version of that case and so is trump. this is more than trump needling. this is trump looking for numbers and by the way, he does need them if he's going to win. >> sanders was on your show "meet the press" yesterday. it seems like he's trying to send a clear signal to supporters that trump is not your guy. >> if you're the clinton folks, you're relieved that he's doing that. he never took that bait. for a long time during the primary, trump would try to sort of put his arm around sanders and sanders always pushed it away. >> he mentioned sanders in his acceptance speech. >> again, it goes back that there is common ground. >> do you feel like sanders is being a good soldier? even though he registered his discontent with what had happened at the dnc, he didn't seem to be fanning the flames.

>> clinton folks weren't pleased with what he said about tim kaine. >> he would have chosen a more pr progressive nominee. >> the night he was picked, one call to president obama and the other to bernie sanders. the fact that he didn't add a but, i think that upset them a bit because it sent a signal to sanders supporters that kaine is not your guy. >> do you think he'll give that call to action endorsement for hillary clinton tonight? >> i think he's going to work on making a case against donald trump. i think the unknown how forcefully does he make a progressive argument for hillary clinton. >> chuck, thank you. we'll see you a lot. back to dylan in new york with a check of the weather. >> thanks, savannah. good morning, everyone. a couple storms trying to move through parts of missouri and into areas like central illinois. we also had severe thunderstorm warning earlier this morning in

we're back with a decision by the international olympic committee that's courting controversy. russia will not be hit with a total ban for rio despite an investigation that revealed state-run doping. we go to london's olympic park for more on that. >> reporter: a lot of athletes who competed here in london four years ago and anti-doping officials are fuming this morning. the ioc going against the world anti-doping agency recommendations giving team russia a chance to compete at the rio olympics. no all-out ban on russian athletes. that's the decision from the international olympic committee on sunday. instead, each sports governing body will have to decide who's clean. >> taking into account only reliable international tests that means russian tests cannot be taken into consideration. >> reporter: the decision bringing relief from russia,

here in philadelphia today, on the republican side donald trump who is back out on the campaign trail is seeing a bit of a bounce after his convention. a new poll out this morning, savannah, now shows him up three points over hillary clinton. >> all right. hallie jackson inside the hall. let's go back to new york and the other morning's top stories from sheinelle jones. good morning. >> just six weeks after the orlando nightclub massacre, police in florida are on the scene of another deadly club shooting. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. myers. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. gunfire broke out at a club known as club blu. two people were killed. at least 16 wounded. tragically, this was teen night so some of the victims are as young as 12 years old. the authorities say at this point there are no indications of terrorism. the club has released a statement that says in part, we are deeply sorry for all involved. we tried to give teens what we

thought was a safe place to have a good time. there was armed security as well as full security inside and out. but as you point out, this is yet one more tragic shooting at a nightclub. it does not appear to be terrorism related as was the case in orlando where 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded just six weeks ago. sheinelle? >> so sad. thank you. police in dallas are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy found inside a hot car sunday in a church parking lot. the outside temperature was at least 98 degrees. officials say the boy's family was at a bible service when the parents realized one of their five children was missing. the father ran outside and came back with his unconscious son in his arms. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. there was tragedy this weekend at a wildlife park in china. a siberian tiger killed one woman and severely wounded

another. >> reporter: a family of four, a man, two women and a child were touring beijing's 6,000 acre wildlife world. it's the largest safari park of its kind in china where animals are allowed to roam freely and visitors can drive through in their car. the man and one of the women both seated in the front got into an argument. at that point she gets out and calmly walks to the driver's side. the driver opens the door and they start talking. the woman doesn't appear to realize the danger until just a split second before the tiger pounces. the man jumps out to help. while the first woman is being attacked, the second woman also tries to help. but the tiger goes after her. within seconds, park staff arrive on the scene but it's too late. the first woman is badly mauled. sustaining serious injuries. the woman who got out to help was killed by the tiger almost instantly. according to officials, visitors are forbidden from getting out

if i didn't, i would scrap them with my teeth and eating the filling. we add just a little bit of butter. >> this is a healthy recipe i can tell already. >> if i were doing this for real, i would take two tablespoons of this cookie set aside for later and it's a magical ingredient. get that nice and moist. you take a little bit to make sure it sticks together so it will work. you just put it inside -- >> how thick do you want that to be inside? >> you just want to make sure there are no moist clumps or dry clumps. >> thick in terms of here? >> you want to go up the sides. thin enough layer on the bottom that you have enough cookie to run it up the sides. it doesn't have to look perfect up top. jagged edges. make it look evil. >> what's in here? >> that's heavy cream, sugar and salt. you get it just to a boil and as that's happening, you have some

milk and gelatin and you want to sprinkle gelatin evenly over cool milk. it helps it set up. we'll put chocolate in there, too. the gelatin just gives it smoother mouth feel and when you cut it, it stands up to attention and looks gorgeous. >> we have people downstairs digging into this. >> it's so good. i need a big glass of milk. >> going right to hell. >> that's why i did it. >> look how cool that looks. a pattern on top. >> now it's bloomed in this one which means that the gelatin is saturated. if it doesn't get like this, you'll bet hard bits of gelatin. after this comes to a boil, you take it off and add your gelatin and stir that up. thank you, sir. you add vanilla. and then this is vanilla bean paste which is my favorite. you can use regular. you can use other extracts. if you like orange, chocolate, that's perfect. dump in that chocolate. i'll do that and you stir. you just make sure that gets

melty enough that it is melted. melty is pretend. here we have it. you want to strain it. here's espresso powder that makes it more chocolatey. >> did you chill something here? >> yes. i bake the crust for ten minutes. you don't have to bake the crust. if it's hot and you are like, forget it. i'm not going turn on the oven. ten minutes to make it crispy and then sieve it into the crust. and it will come right through. and if there are any bits of gelatin leftover, they'll get stopped by the sieve. it will go a lot faster in case you're impatient like i am.

this is swiss meringue. i add a little bit of salt. i do. i swear. >> it's humid. >> and then you put it on top of hot water and whisk it until it's melted and reaches 160 degrees because that kills the nasty in there. no raw eggs. and then you whip it on high until it's nice and fluffy. and you just dump this gorgeousness on top of the pie. you could pipe it and be fancy. no. i just like to do it. you can also torch it. >> i want to take a piece. guys, what's the verdict? >> unbelievable. >> it's so indulgent and delicious. >> and there are other options. put peanut butter mousse or strawberry mousse on top. >> that's attractive, matt. >> this is really good. >> we saw that. >> i didn't want it to fall on the floor. thank you so much. fun to work with you. we have recipes for this and

i'm very much looking forward to this being one of those movies. financial movies always are high risk, high reward. what was it like being a woman in a position known as a boys club? >> i did a lot of research and i was lucky to talk to a lot of women who are on wall street and were not only inspiration for this character and the other female characters but also investors in the movie. so i was given a crash course on how to walk the fine line between being tough and being soft and that perception and that's a very timely issue. >> what did they tell you to be? >> they said it's a lot of psychological -- there's a lot of work in terms of reading the person. sometimes you have to hold their hand and nurture them and sometimes you have to push them. depends. it's an asset that women have in terms of that emotional
