a double threat, severe storms and scorching heat. first alert radar shows severe storms rolling across the region right now all while we're baked by the highest temperatures we've seen so far this summer. the wait is over. convention time is here tonight. >> if i could ask everybody to settle down. >> and it starts with a scandal. >> we don't need folks that are going to be a lightning rod for division. >> discord among democrats as they convene to crown their presidential nominee, and our city is center stage. >> and good evening, we're coming to you live from south philadelphia. a live look inside the wells fargo center adorned in red and blue. the democratic convention began about an hour ago as new controversy swirls. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. going to bring you complete coverage from here at wells fargo center, throughout the region as well, but we have to

begin with the weather threat bearing down on area right now. we're tracking storms on top of this searing heat. let's go right to meteorologist sheena par convenient. >> yeah, jim, the heat is fueling the storms. looking mostly north of philadelphia right now. we've been dealing with severe thunderstorms this afternoon. mostly through the lehigh valley and now heading towards mercer county. there is a back edge to some of this, and there's also another line setting up to move n.allentown finally getting more of a break and we still have a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of northampton county until 5:30. expect winds near 60 miles an hour and with this lightning very heavy rain, rainfall around about 2 1/2 inches per hour and we're looking at hail. upper richland township seeing very heavy rain and severe thunderstorm warning moving into mercer county and trenton seeing that heavy rain across 15 to 95 and 195. all the major interstates in mercer county dealing with very heavy rain and take a look at some of the hail.

we've seen baseball-sized hail and radar indicated and estimated and right near parts of northampton county and seen indications of hail in a line of thunderstorms that's moving towards mercer county, so we have, again, two areas of severe weather we're dealing with mostly in parts of new jersey, mercer county and the lehigh and parts of upper bucks county as well so you want to take shelter. everyone is under severe thunderstorm watch for next act reason. we could still be seeing severe storms until about 8:00 or 10:00 tonight. again, we'll take a look at the timing of that. that will keep tracking these storms for you coming up, and we're also talking about dangerous heat. krystal klei is standing by live with that. >> temperatures unbearable outside and mixing up the humidity we're dealing with thanks to the storms coming through. a liev look outside. you see a gorgeous shot here, but it is hot and the clouds have rolled in and as a result, not only are we tracking the storms but still tracking

temperatures on the high skied. a look at the feels dark like temperatures. 104 is what it feels like outside in philadelphia right now and that's actually better than an hour ago when it felt like 108. what we're dealing is rain-cooled air shifting in. allentown, 73 degrees is what it feels like there. areas like vineland as well as atlantic city still above 100. wilmington 107 and dover 114 degrees is what it feels like outside. let's talk records here. philadelphia has already tied a record for heat. 96 is the high that we've seen so far tying a previous record. allentown the same at 95 degrees and atlantic city close but not quite there. 94 the high we've seen so far and wilmington just 1 degree short and mt. pocono at 87, the high that we saw. that temperature has likely since dropped and, again, official reports later to see if we broke any records. that heat though has been taking over and will continue tomorrow. we'll have more on that coming

up. >> coverage of the democratic national convention and here are the headlines we're following at this hour at 5:00 right now. dnc second and baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake called this convention to order. she took over for the dnc chairperson debbie wasserman schultz who is not taking part in this dnc and bernie sanders also rallied his supporters today. he told them to vote for hillary clinton and continued the revolution they began. this caused the crowd to erupt in boos. sanders set to address the delegates tonight right after first lady michelle obama takes to the podium. want to bring in nbc 10's lauren mayk who is live with me here at a very noisy wells fargo center down on the floor with all the delegates. lauren, the latest controversy left the democratic party at clear crossroads right now. >> reporter: yeah, jim. this party is having a historic

convention about to nominate the first woman for president, but i'll tell you one delegate just said to me party unity is a tough thing right now, and as we stand here in this hall you can hear different cheers at different times from different groups. they are not at this point in unison. some are cheering for hillary clinton and some are cheering for bernie sanders when his name is mentioned and when tim kaine's name is mentioned you hear both cheers and boos. just a few minutes ago i found something that happened at conventions, a hillary clinton supporter sitting very, very close to a bernie sanders supporter. here's our conversation. throughout the primary you have been going to events separately supporting individual candidates and you're sitting close to each other at this convention. how does it feel? >> it feels exciting, and i think tonight after we hear

senator sanders, i think we'll understand that the platform is more unified than divided and when we leave here we'll be do everything humanly possible to make sure hillary gets into the white house. >> is that something you feel ready for at this point? >> i'll be honest, i'm not ready. bernie gave us a nice talk this afternoon. we had a meeting with just person and the delegates. i'm not ready to give up on bernie yet, and when you say a longtime follower of bernie -- >> reporter: she says she's not ready to give up on him yet and knows that it is a long shot, and, jim, we are feeling some dissension in this room. representative marcia fudge was just up on stage a few moments ago and had to sort of stop her speech and ask people to be respectful saying she would be respectful of them because she was being interrupted during her speech. we'll be watching to see how this develops during the rest of

the week. >> feeling that divide. lauren mayk down on the convention floor. bernie sanders did meet with hill delegates and supporters today at the pennsylvania convention center here in philadelphia, and he stressed that his political revolution will continue. make no mistake about it. we have made history! >> sanders applauded the dnc for adopting its most aggressive platform ever. he urged his backers to vote for hillary clinton and tim kaine, and he stressed that donald trump must be stopped for the good of the country. meantime, nbc 10's tim furlong has been track sanders protests and delegates all day long. he's live at city hall for us. what's the situation where you r.looks pretty quiet right now, tim. >> reporter: it's finally calming down a little bit. pretty hot and tense here all day long. hundreds and hundreds of people were here and they gathered. a lot of people from a lot of different groups, as a matter of fact, and there's still a few protesters here, but if you were with us live at 4:00, you saw us

walking along with the massive group as they began their march down broad street to fdr park. >> hell, no, dnc, we won't vote for hillary. >> reporter: many saying they are no longer democrats. >> i would rather that donald trump in office than hillary clinton. >> reporter: but that's wrlt democratic party is right now when they are supposed to be here in philly coming together behind their candidate, but the release of e-mails showing top dnc officials backing clinton from the get-go not sitting well with sanders supporters. >> this is disgusting to me. >> this is what democracy looks like! >> reporter: some sanders supporters tell me they won't back clinton even if bernie sanders tells them they should. they don't like her policies. they don't like this dnc e-mail mess and don't like tim kaine, clinton's choice for president. they say she could have won over sanders supporters with a progressive running mate but

here with us. how is things look, jessica, aside from city hall? >> aside from city hall we are looking at a pretty typical evening commute, of course. seeing more delays because of the dnc convention that's this week, so i'm going to show you some. spots. the closures. there's 95 north and southbound ramps to broad street and the schuylkill expressway eastbound ramp to packer avenue. that's hover in this general area. those ramps are closed, but that's okay because the highways are still open. the problem, some of the bigger problems are the police checkpoints. now, there's one at 95 northbound right around the philadelphia international airport and over into this general area. can you see the string of red approaching the northbound area. anything pretty much moving into "sex and the city" or the southbound -- south philly area around the wells fargo center is where we earring seeing delays. another police checkpoint is 95 southbound around girard avenue. a little bit of red there again and this is what the checkpoints pretty much look like. the vine street expressway right around third street so you can

the democratic national convention sunday way but not without plenty of drama. coverage continues coming up and exclusive access to how authorities are making sure the convention stays secure. that story coming at 5:30. another deadly nightclub shooting in florida. this time inñrçón ft. myers. theñi park lot of theñi club is littered with bullet casings. officers are talking to three people in connection with the shooting. >> this morning's shooting comes six weeks after the deadly shooting at the pulse nightclub in that attack the gunman pledged allegiance toñrñipiisis. 49 people died before theñi gunn was killed by police. the june 12 attack is considered the worst mass shooting in recent u.s. history. residents in baton rouge are

mourning again today. the last of three funerals was heldçó today for the police officers killed in an ambush. hundreds of people packed a service forñi montrell jackson. the ten-year veteran leaves behind a wife and infant son. members ofñi jackson's squad comforted his widow promising to always be there for her. >> jackson and two other officers were shot and killed back on july 17thñr targeted by police. >> well, we're still tracking strong and severe thunderstorms across the area. severe thunderstorm warning has been extended through parts of bucks county so we're looking at upper bucks county and central parts of bucks county and through the center of the lehigh valley more storms approaching there and most of the snow storm

activity in parts of mercer county. severe thunderstorm warning here until 5:30 but that has been extended the farther south you go and that will all be moving into parts of new jersey very soon, too, and what we're dealing with right now is a lot of lightning and very heavy rain and potential hail. lightning strikes about 117 just in this area in the past 15 minutes and very heavy rain. we could be seeing this leading to localized street and creek flooding possibly and also winds could be near 60 miles an hour. those are damaging winds. through west windsor. everything moving out of mercy county across 95 and looking at areas in lower bucks county and across 295 towards trenton. heavier rain here, too, but the most severe of this is in parts of central and bucks county. hail-sized. right near golf balance sized in areas close to buckingham and newtown grant getting some of that hail, too.

very severe thunderstorm. hail, heavy wind, lightning and damaging winds. near dublin, golf-ball sized hail and milford looking at walnut-sized hail so these thunderstorms are capable of producing hail. what we saw earlier in northampton county was baseball-sized hail, what the radar estimated and the good news for hampton county is they are pretty much in the clear, and i think that will be changing here pretty soon. severe thunderstorm watches out for the entire area. some parts of our area philadelphia and points north until 8:00 p.m. southgersy in delaware until about 10:00 tonight. we're also watching another line of showers and storms, severe storms just outside of the poconos in the lehigh valley and making their way into the poker knows. if you're in lehigh expect by 531 and allentown 605 and easton 6:24. another severe line of storms that will be moving once again into the lehigh valley right over the same areas that saw the storms just about an hour ago so

we could be looking at localized flooding and the severe storms mean the potential for wind damage. we're also dealing with the dangerous heat. this is helping to fuel the storms. for the lehigh valley we've seen temperatures dropping because of the rain and same thing in trenton and rest of the area feeling like anywhere from 101 to 114 degrees, especially if you're in dover. it's still very hot and very humid. here's a look at future weather. by 6:30 this evening. i think we'll still be seeing scattered showers and storms and potentially severe storms and even by 8:30. the threat is still going to exist, especially if you're south of philadelphia, and then by tomorrow we'll seeing things clear up. another sunny hot day. we'll try to take a look at that forecast and keep tracking those storms for you coming up. >> and speaking. heat, sheena, now to delaware county where people along one street are stuck sweltering tonight. they are without power after a truck took out lines in ridley township. nbc 10's deanna durante is live at the scene and deanna, any

idea how long these people will be without power? >> peco is estimating about 10:00 tonight. take a look. you can see a number of crews on scene replacing the power lines, the power poles that have been knocked down. they are hoping to get the lights and more important lit air conditioning working here before people go to bed. >> is it cooler out here or cooler in your house? >> just about the same? >> it's getting warmer and warmer in my home and i'm just worried about the freezer and the refrigerator and all, but it looks like it's going to be a while soon. >> reporter: matter knew there had been an accident and after more than five hours of waiting in the dark she came to see if any progress has been made. >> i hope it doesn't last much long sneer around 9:00 this morning when a box truck carrying furniture got snagged on a dangling wire and the driver had no idea what was happening when the truck began to swerve. >> i turned the motor off and behind me in the side view mirrors i saw the telephone pole starting to come down. >> reporter: he jumped out of the truck. feeling pretty lucky right now?

>> yeah, yeah. >> reporter: dozens of philadelphia residents are sitting and waiting and many may not even know they don't have power. a nearby apartment complex lost power in half of the units there and telling residents now to go elsewhere for the evening. crews tell us some people who were inside the houses and apartments left on their own to seek cooler shelter. crew disease evacuate a few people to a nearby ridley high school. the doors are hope for those left in the dark and the heat. >> i may just do that. >> now, many of the people were told are left on their own and one man went out and bought himself a generator and is ready for this power failure and if any others happen down the road and crews are saying they hope to have the lights and air conditioning on here by 10:00 tonight. reporting live, deanna draent, nbc 10 news. >> the olympic games begin 11

welcome back to our live coverage from south philadelphia. a live look inside the wells fargo center. maryland congressman elijah cummings at the podium as they discuss the platform committee, and this convention opens amid controversy and uncertainty. there's also trouble brewing outside as well. we're talking about the weather. take a look at live first alert radar where you see storms rolling in amid sweltering heat. i'm jim rosenfield live at the wells fargo center.

right now more on the developing weather situation. we're track dangerous storms. let's get right to first alert meteorologist sheena par convenient. >> most severe storms sitting just north of philadelphia and everyone is in a risk of strong to severe storms later onnant tonight. right now we're look mostly at the lehigh valley up through parks of bucks county. this is where we have the most severe storms through the area. more storms heading into the lehigh valley and parts of berks county, lehigh county and northampton county until 6:15. a large line of very strong to severe storms heading in this direction and keep in mind with any severe storms, winds, lightning, heavy lightning possible and another another round is heading our way. these storms are mostly moving southeast around 45 miles an hour. if you're in whitehall township expect them by 5:43 and allentown 5:45 and exeter closer to 6:00 and potstown by 6:07. another area of very strong

thunderstorms, still looking at a severe thunderstorm warning for this area of bucks county including buckingham and new briton and this is all going to go until 6:00 p.m. because of the severe nature of this thunderstorm. we're seeing pretip rates almost 2 1/2 inches or more per hour. could be look at localized flooding and lightning strikes in this area alone in the past 15 minutes are almost up to 150 so a little more than what we had earlier. that severe strong thunderstorm could be seeing damaging one near 60 miles per hour. in mercer county you're dealing with spotty heavy rain and the worst of the storms moving through mercer county, but we're detecting golf ball sized haleys especially near doylestown so i think that's one area where we're seeing golf ball sized hail and that's going to be moving in the direction of buckingham and with the storms moving into the lehigh valley another round of potential hail and damaging wind. we'll talk about that dangerous heat outside right now that's coming up.

>> go, go, go! >> police are preparing for anything at the dnc. >> obviously the country is a powder keg right now. your nbc 10 investigators have exclusive access. >> inside and outside and every door and every window. >> to show you what those on the front lines expect. >> there may be a lot of problems in the dnc. >> police in philadelphia have run through final preparations for this dnc and your nbc 10 investigators were there to see the state of the art technology they are used to go secure this event. here's investigative reporter mitch flock sneer you're inside the secret service's virtual model of the dnc. >> we come out and we take thousand of photographs. >> reporter: bob langham's team built it. almost as detailed as the real thing. >> for example, you know, there are the exit and the stairs. that's the correct number of stairs. >> reporter: dozen of agents, including those on the president's protective detail, won't be able to get here before the convention.

they used the model to sleep. >> to have the ability to see the route that the president is going to travel in to see the gate that he's going to come through and the door that he's going to walk through and route he'll walk through to get to the stage, it's an invaluable tool. >> reporter: is shows the perimeter fencing that will line the broad street, area between the area at the convention center and i-95. philly police also trained here at the secret service training center in maryland. we were there but not allowed to record the training due to security concerns. >> coming through! >> reporter: but the secret service released and edited version of the training only to nbc 10. it shows agents training for an assault on the wells fargo center, a motorcade ambush and a simple medical emergency. >> it's a larger scale, but it's not different because we deal and train for this type of stuff. that's why we're here >> reporter: nbc 10 investigators were given exclusive access as s.w.a.t. officers like philadelphia's

sergeant joe mcdonald trained with the pennsylvania state police, the fbi and the secret service. what do you expect for the dnc? >> to be honest i really don't know but i think in light of what's been going on the last week it's got a potential to be a problem. >> reporter: more than 200 officers and agents spent the day making swhur this model turns into the real thing it's as smooth as they practiced. now all of this security costs a lot of extra money. the city of philadelphia will get more than $40 million from the federal government. the city will also hire private security to help secure the area outside of the secret service's perimeter. for the investigators, mitch flocker, nbc 10 news. >> for those trying to get around the convention, keeping a close eye on traffic tonight as a result of the dnc. our first alert traffic reporter is here with us. jessica, how are things looking senate. >> some delays throughout the city hall area and down through south philadelphia, and center city. most of the rush hour is really looking typical other than the

closures on 95 south and broad street ramp and schuylkill expressway in this general area and the police checkpoint is causing the biggest delay. one on i-95 northbound and northbound towards the philadelphia international airport and southbound right around girard avenue because on that five-mile stretch on i-959 they are not allowing commercialal vehicles over nine tons to pass through the area. the checkpoints, cone and lane restrictions as well. this is the vine street expressway right around third street. pretty much single file towards police activity so that's why you're seeing some of the slowdown towards 95. taking a closer look into the south philly area, closures around broad street, around penn rose avenue, some delays and the arteries that generally feed into the south philly area around the wells fargo center is what's back up right now. we're also seeing some problems for mass transit. the broad street line has been running extended express service

from "sex and the city" into the stadium area, but for right now the broad street line, because of dnc security actions, are operating only as far as oregon station and no service to or from at&t station. we'll have more updates, of course, for you as soon as we get them and any of those backups or delays. jim, back to you. >> jessica, thanks. >> what do we want? >> justice. >> about 100 activists including many bernie sanders supporters marched across the ben franklin bridge begins in camden this morning protesters wanted sanders to get the democratic nod for president over hillary clinton, and they are hopping the march will change the minds of super delegates pledged to clinton. >> it's up to the super delegates to realize that the dnc has now chosen the most unelectable candidate that the dnc has ever anointed. >> and some sanders supporters

looking live from the floor of the wells fargo center covered in red and blue. bob brady and brendan doile will address the dny as will philadelphia's mayor jim kenny. we'll watch for that, and later tonight we'll hear from first lady michelle obama, but the speech from bernie sanders could be the most politically consequential. he's trying to real his delegates behind hill little. could be a tough sell. nbc 10 went to the pennsylvania delegates' breakfast where debbie wasserman schultz was a no-show hours after stepping down as dnc chair. she resigned after wikileaks published details plotting against the sanders campaign. democratic leaders tried to rally the crowd, but the controversy was still top of mind. >> we've been being told that we're welcome to the convention and that, you know, we're

massage the qb situation. for now, i'm john clark from the nova care complex for csn. >> and we're just 17 days away from the eagles preseason opener against tampa bay. the game can be seen live on csn and cozy-tv. coverage starts at 6:30 and kickoff is set for 7:00. >> well, we still have a lot of strong storms moving through and into the area. we'll take a look at the lehigh valley because right now one strong thunderstorm is moving in here and it's moving towards the allen town area right near lehigh heading into northampton county, but there's a lot of lightning in this storm and there's very heavy rain and potentially damaging winds near 60 miles an hour. this rain could be falling at a rate of about 2 to 3 inches per hour. it's a pretty fast mover here. very strong winds in the north white hall township, across 476 and heading towards white hall,

allen and east allen and we'll see the bottom edge of this storm and we could be dealing with hail in this storm as well, so this is one strong thunderstorm. we have a severe thunderstorm warning out for it for parts of burks county. going to be lehigh hand northampton counties until 6:15 and with any strong storm if you're in the path of this thing, expect 60-mile-an-hour winds, lightning and heavy rain and possible hail. if you're in allentown you'll be seeing some of this by just about now, 5:45, richland 6:02 and doiltstown 6:22 so it's a pretty fast mover traveling to the southeast right around 45 miles per hour. another strong storm, severe storm we've been watching in is parts of bucks county. seeing a lot of heavy rain an lightning here and leaving warrington and seeing heavy rain and indications of hail. severe thunderstorm warning here until 6:00 p.m. precip rates, a little bit over three inches an hour. we could be looking at localized flooding in these areas and

that's going to go into parts of mercer county and very heavy rain here as well, especially around the trenton area. ryan near pineville road we could be seeing wall-nut sized hail. one indication on radar, and we're even seeing potentially golf-ball sized hail and, again, that's just shows you how strong these storms are. we have hail in these storms and some of that hail is fairly large and the larger we see the hail growing, the stronger the storm is becoming, so, again, a lot of strong storms mostly north of philadelphia. we could be seeing some showers and storms developing into parts of montgomery county. either way, the severe thunderstorm watch, all the county is shaded in pink until about 8:0010:00. if you're in philadelphia and points north, new jersey and delaware, mostly yours will end at 10:00 tonight but either way expect those strong to severe storms to be moving in. here's a look at future weather by about 8:00 pvmt i think we'll still have showers and storms around possibly in the philadelphia area and maybe even

south jersey and delaware and clearing out in time for tomorrow so tomorrow will be a much drier day but it's still going to be a hot day. looking at that at the bottom of the screen. the heat continues. 94 right now delaware and rain-cooled air in allentown 5795 degrees and dangerous heat still. with the humidity take a look at how hot is feels. 102 in philadelphia and feels like 114 right now in dover. so aside from the storms, we're still dealing with dangerous heat across the area. i'll keep tracking the storms for you coming up. well, saturday's clear the shelters campaign was a huge success. here and across the country. take a look at the like of people outside one shelter in delaware county saturday. this is outside the providence animal center in media. more than 1,000 animals were adopted across our area saturday and close to 4,100 were adopted since the campaign launched on july 2nd.
