aside with the swirling controversy. all eyes on philadelphia this week as democrats make the first woman a presidential nominee. good evening, everybody. i'm jim rosenfield live in south philadelphia home of the democratic national convention at the wells fargo center. nbc 10, your home for coverage of what's happening inside and outside the wells fargo center right now and our dnc coverage continues in a minute and first let's go to jacqueline london in the studio. >> just as it is active there, it's active in our weather department as well. we're tracking severe storms. parts of the area saw golf ball and baseball sized hail and the storm threat is not over just yet. nobodies 10 first alert meteorologist sheena par convenient is tracking the storms in your neighborhood. >> yeah, we have a lot of severe storms rolling through and even over some of the areas that saw them earlier this afternoon. leet high vale, one of those areas, we have some very strong thunderstorms right near the allentown section, and right

over allentown right now, very heavy rain, a lot of lightning and damage is winds and the potential for hail right across 78. this is going to move towards easton very soon. a severe thunderstorm warning out for this area until 645. a lot of lightening, like mentioned and with any severe thunderstorm you can expect winds potentially near 60 miles an hour. those are damaging winds. this storm is moving pretty quickly right around 45 miles an hour to the southeast, so if you're in upper bucks county expect this very soon and by easton expect at bed minister 6:16 and solebury is closer to 6:30, and, again, damaging winds with a storm if you're on the path of that thing. you want to get inside. also for bucks county, we've been watching heavy rain and lightning over the same area near buckingham and finally starting to leave buckingham and newtown grant, a lot of lightning and heavy rain. also the potential for damaging winds. precip rates are over and 2 nfl

inches an hour and this will continue to move into mercer county north of trenton, a lot of lightning and across the major interstates and, yes, we're seeing golf ball sized haleys especially in parts of the lehigh valley as well. keep tracking the storms coming and show you what you can expect coming up straight ahead. >> we have some breaking news right now in the political world. bernie sanders just sent a message to his protests and asked them not to disrupt this convention. the unity of the democratic party was challenged earlier today as a new leader kicked off the convention two hours ago and today the fbi now involved in thing hacked e-mails that suggest the the dnc supported clinton over sanders during the primaries. we will give you an all-access pass over the next four davis dnc right here in philadelphia. we have every report and photojournalist covering everything that's happening and how it could affect you, and right now we have reporters on every level inside the wells fargo center. we begin with nbc 10's george spencer. george?

>> and, jim, the crowd down here on the floor already boisterous after nearly a year and a half of preparation. this is an historic moment for the city of philadelphia and historic nomination of a female candidate, but it all comes at a time of deep discord within the democratic party. with the drop of the gavel and loud cheers this afternoon, the 2016 democratic national convention officially launched 16 years after our heavily democratic city hosted its last convention, but for the democratic party leader who helped organize it all, a fast and stunning downfall. debbie wasserman schultz was nearly booed off the stage by her home state florida delegation this morning thanks to the e-mail leak scandal seeming to show party leaders biassed in favor of hillary clinton over bernie sanders.

>> it's unfortunate, real unfortunate. >> reporter: this delegate from wasserman schultz' home state believes it's the only path forward. >> she's looking at the bigger picture that the democrats continue to hold white house. >> reporter: among sanders protests on the floor this afternoon division runs very deep. >> i think it is time for the corrupt democratic politicians to fall on their sword and realize that there's a movement happening, and it's not going to stop. >> unifying that, quote, movement with clinton's establishment support will be a central challenge for the democratic party during its week in our city, and at least for now, as it all begins, delaware super delegate lisa goodman is optimistic. >> primaries always leave some hard feelings and i think it's inevitable that that always happens. the job of us as delegates and us as a party will leave philadelphia united and i think we will. and tonight we're expecting

to hear more on that theme of unity. specifically as it relates to american families and the american economy and among big name speakers tonight, philadelphia mayor jim kenny. reporting live from the democratic national convention floor, i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. jim, back up to you. >> objection george. bernie sanders addressed his delegates and said his revolution transformed the democratic party, and as we mentioned nbc news has learned sanders telling his supporters this afternoon do not disrupt convention tonight. we'll see if they follow that. this afternoon sanders fired up his delegates during a speech at the pennsylvania convention center. the crowd booed when sanders said, quote, we need to elect hillary clinton. nbc 10's lauren mayk joining us live from the floor of the wells fargo center. lauren? can you hear me lauren? >> i just spoke with a delegate who received that e-mail that

you mentioned. that e-mail from bernie sanders that went out by text and e-mail, and it told supporters that they could damage this movement that they had helped create by booing or otherwise demonstrating here on the floor but that for some a very difficult task because this is something they are very passionate about. they have spent a lot of time working on this, and they are not quite ready to just be adored by the democratic party yet. they still want to have their voices heard. earlier today a large group of delegates gathered at the convention center in philadelphia where they actually got to hear from bernie sanders and hearing from them tonight and they got to hear from him today. take a listen. >> immediately right now we have got to defeat donald trump. and we have got to elect hillary clinton and tim kaine.

[ crowd booing ] >> i think the republican party has excluded themselves out of the serious dialogue if you look at the pure darkness they had at their convention. i'm looking for light and inspiration. >> reporter: what are your feelings as you're waiting for in? >> i heard bernie's speeches a lot of times. he probably is going to give the same speech that he gave us in -- in the delegates speech this afternoon so, you know, the really good part to this speech he'll talk a lot about how it is that the revolution continues from here. >> reporter: so a lot of anticipation to hear from bernie sanders himself today and hear what he has to say. this time he will be addressing not just his own delegates but hillary clinton's delegates as well. and, jim, as we are down here on the floor, we're going to throw things back up to you, looking down on this convention. jim? >> all right, lauren mayk, thank

you. thousands of protesters received permits to rally this week for bernie sanders, and a short time ago we learned philadelphia police detained about ten of them who crossed through the police barricades, and today there were crowds feeling the bern of this dangerous heat in south jersey, center and south philadelphia as well. tough conditions out there. first alert traffic reporter is looking at how this is impacting the rush hour commute. jessica, how is it looking? >> jim, we were seeing a lot of closures and delays as protesters were going from broad street down to the city hall and the schuylkill expressway eastbound ramp now to packer avenue, this general area are closed, and the police checkpoints is what's causing death lays. 59 northbound right around the philadelphia international airport, you can see the delays and 95 southbound around girard

avenue and those where the five-ton restrictions are in place. moving in a little bit closer into the wells fargo area and into south philadelphia. can you see that closure of broad street here. we are seeing some backups and delays and arteries that funneled into that space and right now they are actually starting to improve. this is 676, the vine street expressway around third street. some of the volume that we're approaching seeing 95 because of the police checkpoints. it will be like that. nothing to major right now. jessica boyington, thanks. >> a look at primetime speakers. starting tonight at 9:00, cory booker who is was a finalist for the vp pick and first lady michelle obama and a new addition, the keynote speaker is senator elizabeth warren and finally senator bernie sanders gets his time in the national spotlight tonight. now, as for republican presidential nominee donald trump this afternoon, he had a stump speech with his running mate with mike pens in virginia.

welcome back inside the residention. i'm jim reasons feil. you know at end of the night many people here will go back to air-conditioned hotel rooms burks a lot of protests loyal to bernie sanders, they are staying in steamy conditions outdoors at campgrounds in southgers. all new at 6:00, nbc 10's ted greenberg caught up with some of them in salem county. >> they are taking a stand. even if it means staying intense in the sweltering woods of southern new jersey. >> it's pretty hot, but when you believe in something and you're dedicated to that cause, you'll do anything to make it happen. >> this woman and her 11-year-old daughter tiara from flint, michigan, are among a large group of bernie sanders supporters. ♪ i didn't pick my face, my race ♪ >> reporter: whose home is this state park in pitts grove township. for them camping is far less costly than staying in hotels.

>> it's not about the fun. it's not about anything. it's about bernie. it's about protesting. >> most are taking bugses to and from protests in philadelphia. >> i put 44,000 miles on the car for bernie, and it's not over yet. >> reporter: jim peterson and his car covered from signatures and messages from people sharing his views are here from washington state. >> i'm concerned about my well-being out there today in the heat, but for me i'm willing to risk my life for my democracy. >> reporter: this is one of several campgrounds in south jersey where sanders supporters are staying. for some it's also their first time roughing it. >> i saw somebody walk miles with their camping gear that has never camped before. they got here and couldn't even put up the tent. >> reporter: they say in the wake of the massive e-mail leak appearing to show the democratic national committee preferred clinton over sanders it's even more crucial their voices are heard.

>> now we are seeing behind the facade of people who have been in charge who we have kind of questioned. ♪ >> it's a stay heavy on grass roots accommodations that's part of a passionate political journey. ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. >> all week long we'll have a one-hour special live at the dnc at 7:00 p.m. plenty of time for analysis. we'll bring all the sights and sounds from this democratic national convention. for now let's go back to the studio and my co-anchor jacqueline london. jacqueline? >> all right, jim, thank you. of course, we had the intense heat today and then the storms built in. we're wondering tonight if the protesters who were staying out in campgrounds, if they are going to have to contend with more stormy weather tonight. >> yeah. well, you know, jacqueline, it's not a good idea because the entire area is under severe thunderstorms watch even though much of south jersey has really stayed out of the storms. for now we still have the potential of seeing storms move through south jersey and delaware and here is a live look

right now at the radar. you see all the yellow boxes, severe thunderstorm warnings across the area. we've seen the majority activity north of philadelphia, and what we're real watching now are two very strong thunderstorms, one through the lehigh valley and one just north of philadelphia and could be skimming northeast philly. we'll be watching that one very closely, too. also because these storms have indications of damaging winds and also hail, and some of that hail has been golf ball sized and potentially baseball size from earlier estimates. right now we're look through the area north of philadelphia and start at the lehigh vale. allen town has seen a lot of heavy rain as well as other parts of the lehigh valley. >> richmond and bed minister, severe thunderstorm warning other until 6:45. the heavy rain is falling at a rate of about 2 to 3 inches an house, and this particular thunderstorm has a lot of lightning in it and potentially damaging winds. if are you in bed minister expect it by 6:22 and then it will be sliding into new jersey. now we're look near parts of

lower montgomery county right near norristown. abbington across the p.a. turnpike and gwinnett township. a severe thunderstorm and this morning it's going to go until 6:45. now this storm is pretty much skimming the philadelphia area. possibly northeast philly could see some of this and if you're in bensalem expect it at 6:36, mt. laurel right around 6:50. this one is traveling southeast right around 30 to 40 miles an hour. with any strong storms, 60-mile-an-hour winds. seeing indications of golf ball sized hail right near skipback. whit payne township this, hail traveling mostly southeast so these are indications that we're dealing with a very strong, dangerous thunderstorm. if you're in the path of this thing you want to get inside this. hail is heading towards the p.a. turnpike and currently

indications of it right across 476. parts of bucks county, golf ball-sized hail and that storm will be sliding into new jersey soon. now we're looking at mercy county and very heavy rain andy is vee thunderstorms still in this area with a lot of lightning potential lip damaging winds so this is a very active afternoon. we could also be looking at the potential for flooding with a lot of these storms and everyone is under a severe thunderstorm watch until about 8:00 p.m. tonight. if you're around philadelphia and points north. southgers and delaware expected until about 10:00 p.m. tonight, so we'll be keeping an eye on storms very closely. mostly north of gravely now and either way for the rest of this evening. any strong storms could provide damaging winds, lightning and heavy rain and the potential for rain as we've seen indications of that. here's a look as we go hour by hour. a look at 8:30 tonight and we're still seeing storms around the area. south jersey and delaware, keeping an eye on the locations as well and all of this is

quieting down and tomorrow will be a much dryer day and temperatures remaining around 90 degrees for most of this week. a closer look at this forecast coming up. john? >> you can hear police choppers flying overhead. there's protesters right outside the eagles gates, but inside here at the nova care complex, they were all excited for day one of training camp. whenthe state made aers, commitment to us. i knew that i wasn't going to make a fortune. but i would have a secure pension plan when i retired. each and every one of us made that contribution from every paycheck we ever earned. they've been negligent in their responsibility over the years of not funding this pension the way it should have been funded. they have made a promise, they've made a commitment, and they need to stick to it.

here all the birds cared about was getting ready for their season. >> feel really good. you know, obviously compared to this time last year, you know, it's night and day. >> sam bradford is completely healthy going into a season for the first time in a few years. no more season-ending knee surgeries to rehab from, and that is a big deal. >> you know, it was great. it's actually been a couple of years since i've been able to do that, so physically right now i feel really good. >> i know that's the mindset coming into this camp that he had an entire off-season to get stronger and get in the weight room and do all the things that the guys were doing and just give you a boost of confidence going into the season. >> doug reiterate that had sam is the starter. chase daniel is the number two quarterback and carson wentz is the third qb. how have they managed to manage the situation? >> we laid out a plan back in the off-season, and our plan was to to -- we were going to have to massage this a little bit and make sure that all three guys
