>> i'm vai sikahema. it was an historic night here at the wells fargo center. we're going to walk you through all the surprising and emotional moments and share reaction from local delegates, many attending the convention for the very first time. first, let's get to meteorologist bill henley with his first alert neighborhood forecast, a close look at communities across pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. good morning, bill. >> good morning, vai. another nice day, lots of sunshine. temperatures will be warming up quite a bit. at this hour, no sun. they're cooling down. in the 70s for most locations, delaware running warmer. clouds coming in. that's holding in some of the heat left over from yesterday. and not much cooler in philadelphia and south jersey but where the skies are clear, the lehigh valley, and the suburbs, the temperatures have dropped into the low 70s and are still falling at this hour. low 70s for chestnut hill and andor andorra, park side is 74 degrees, northeast philadelphia at the airport it's 77, also 77 in fox chase and low 80s in

center city and society hill. that's our starting point. we're going to be into the low 90s this afternoon. i'll go through the forecast hour by hour when i'm back in just a few minutes. let's get a check of traffic. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> we're starting off in montgomery county where there's a vehicle fire being reported in plymouth, industrial way and ridge pike. watch out for road restrictions there. here's the vine street expressway. all week we've avoided that construction and that's because of the dnc being in town. these are our cameras around 24th street. all lanes open, whether you're headed westbound towards the schuylkill expressway or eastbound towards 95. lus watching drive times, 95 looking okay. 14 minutes there into center city. no problems on the schuylkill expressway eastbound from the blue route to the vine is a 13-minute trip. no problems on the blue route either, southbound from the schuylkill to 95. a 15-minute trip with speeds into the 60s. i'll be back with ten minutes with more updates for you on your morning drive. tracy?

hello, philadelphia. we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet. >> a surprise appearance by hillary clinton capped off an historic day in presidential politics at the dnc. clinton appeared live via satellite from her home in new york hours after she became the first woman to win a major party nomination for president. >> clinton finished with this message to girls and young women across the nation. >> and if there are any little girls out there who stay up late to watch, let me just say, i may become the first woman president but one of you is next. thank you all. i can't wait to join you in philadelphia! thank you! >> clinton is scheduled to formally accept the democratic nomination tomorrow night. we spoke of local delegates who say they were caught completely off guard by the big moment.

>> it was a huge surprise for everybody. we had no idea she was going to come on tonight and give us a message. sojeñ gives us at the end of te night, it gives us a definitive candidate. >> i'm actually still speechless. i can frankly tell you i didn't expect that. i thought the night would end on bill. it really was more exciting. it kept building with alicia keys, meryl streep and just to see hillary, she's not here right now but it builds the expectations of thursday night, of what it's going to mean for the history of this country. >> after the big night of speeches, the delegates say they can't wait for more tonight when president obama takes the stage. more on what they're expecting to see and hear in the next half hour. hillary clinton got a boost from her biggest supporter, her husband. >> former president bill clinton was a keynote speaker. he focused on his wife's

professional and personal stories, starting from the time he met her in a law school library 45 years ago. the former president said his wife had made it her life's goal to make it better for people. >> if you were sitting what i'm sitting an you heard what i have heard at every dinner conversation, every lunch conferring, on every long walk you would say this woman has never been satisfied with the status quo in anything. she always wants to move the ball forward. that is just who she is. >> bill clinton also complimented the delegates for nominating his wife earlier in the evening. >> and i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> vermont senator bernie sanders did the honors for hillary clinton during the roll call of the states. it was south dakota that actually put clinton over the top. the dnc gave sanders a final say

before he officially ended his bid for the white house. nbc 10 caught up with former pennsylvania governor ed rendell just before the historic nomination. >> touched and emotional. i don't have a daughter. i'm obviously not a woman but when she goes -- i'll have tears in my eyes. >> she won the nomination with nearly a thousand more delegates than bernie sanders. senator sanders will continue making the rounds in philadelphia. >> he may not be running for president but he's still connecting politically. the vermont senator is scheduled to speak to the pennsylvania delegation later on this morning. sanders will be one of several special guests at a breakfast in center city. josh shapiro running for state attorney general is also scheduled to speak. dozens of frustrated bernie sanders delegates walked out of the dnc after hillary clinton's nomination last night, they held a sit-in at a tent for journalists. some scaled a fence in protest.

>> i just couldn't control my emotions. i didn't want to stay there. i tried talking to hillary people. they don't respect us. they don't want to hear from us. >> we also spoke with local delegates who are for hillary and bernie. the bernie delegates say because he came so close to a nomination that this could be the beginning of something big. >> bernie did not win the nomination but think about it, all these other people who are involved, active, are thinking for running for state legislature, maybe a national office and holding our elected leaders accountable. the revolution has commenced and it's not going to end just because bernie did not win the nomination. we're going to hold hillary and other democrats on the progressive agenda. >> i think that the bernie or bust people are going to take a while to come to terms and that's okay. that's what the democraticç pay

is about. >> despite the walkoff and frustration voiced by bernie's supporters, democratic delegates on both sides say the party still feels a sense of unity. and day three of the democratic national convention is upon us. >> today seems the dnc is working together, gavel time is 4:30. in addition to president obama, the speakers tonight include vice president joe biden and hillary clinton's running mate, virginia senator tim kaine. during this and every election the focus is all about the future. >> young people don't just have the right to vote. many in philadelphia are taking an active role in the political process. nbc 10's matt delucia is live on independence mall to explain. hi, matt. >> hi, vai and tracy. i spoke with a few students who are working at the convention. temple university has 18 students interning at the dnc and another 6 students intern at the republican national convention last week in cleveland. a lot of students getting experience there. they have different roles, different assignments during

this process, all in the spirit of learning a little more about the political process. some are checking i.d.s and credentials, others are working with a campaign or helping delegates. the college democrats club at temple has been pretty involved leading up to this convention, especially having it in their hometown. it makes it extra special. among the students we spoke with, they tell me there's a lot involved, seminars, education. but it's well worth it. other students on campus have taken interest in the election as well. >> it was an exciting time to get year feet wet outside of the normal classroom. >> do you have a lot of conversations with your friends and classmates about the election and what's coming up? >> i'd say so, especially because bernie sanders was such a high runner on the ticket and he really expressed interest in supporting young people and college students. it really opened up the conferring, at least for me. that's how i got into looking at the 2016 election was because of

scattered clouds, then mostly sunny skies, 88 degrees by 2:00 this afternoon. the lehigh valley in the clear. no sign of fog this morning. that's not going to repeat. 70 degrees now. a quick warmup, upper 80s. that's by lunch time today. topping out in the very low 90s. winds just a light breeze out of the we have at 5 miles an hour by later this afternoon. we're keeping an eye on new jersey. there are going to be a few scattered clouds at times, a slight chance of afternoon shower, especially in southern new jersey. mainly just sunny, 82 degrees at 10:00. middle 80s at noontime and near 90 degrees. that's at 2:00 this afternoon. it's a beautiful day in new jersey and at the shore, perfect shore weather. sunshine will be bright to start with, 76 degrees at 8:00. then into the low 80s thisç afternoon. a light breeze but eventually a sea breeze blowing to keep the temperatures lower today. and delaware, sunny skies, 80 degrees right now. there will be clouds moving through first thing this

morning, scattered clouds at 10:00. at noontime, sunshine takes over and warms temperatures into the 80s and low 90s this afternoon. look at the 10 day on 10 when i'm back in just a few minutes. first, let's get a check of traffic. jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. >> thanks, bill. we're starting off with checkpoint areas that are around for the dnc this week. we have a few on 95. northbound right around philadelphia international airport, that's this area down here. 95 southbound around girard avenue, that's over here. and the vine street expressway eastbound around 95. these restrictions are in place because of the five-ton commercial vehicle restriction that they have in place for those vehicles not allowed access to the nine-mile stretch of 95 while the dnc is out in the south philadelphia area. so watch out for that. that's where we were seeing the most delays. these are what the checkpoints look like. this is on the vine street

isolated in the world, alienated from our allies must be a disaster. we must elect hillary clinton as our next president. madeleine albright delivered that message on u.s. foreign policy to the dnc delegates. albright was the first female secretary of state. the dnc is trying to move on from the hacked e-mail scandal that forced its chairwoman to resign earlier this week. >> new details continue to emerge. u.s. intelligence agencies say they're confident the russian government was behind the theft of e-mails and documents from the democratic national committee. those agencies said they're not sure if the hacking was routine spying or an effort to sway the 2016 presidential election. wikileaks released e-mail which is appeared to show the dnc

trying to undermine bernie sanders camp in favor of hillary clinton's. the head of wikileaks admitted he hoped to harm clinton's chances of winning the white house. donald trump will be making a campaign stop two hours north of philadelphia. >> the republican presidential nominee will hold a town hall style forum at lackawanna college. donald trump was busy tweeting out comments during former president clinton's speech at the dnc. he said no matter how well or what he says, the phony media will explain it to be incredible, highly overrated. jerry springer is at the dnc supporting hillary clinton. after he spoke to the massachusetts delegation yesterday, reporters asked him about donald trump. >> i don't know if he's bad as a human being. i'm saying he has no business

running for president. i would love to play golf with him but if he were saying, jerry, should i run for president? i'd say, what? how about running for city council first. >> springer also said he doesn't think his show is it to blame for the bad behavior we see in society and politics. he said people have been behaving badly since biblical times. what's different now is technology quickly spreads it around the world. >> let's check in with nbc 10's katy zachry for a look at today's other top stories. good morning, katy. >> good morning. three men are in the hospital after a shootout in south philadelphia. police tell us they found 36 shell casings from two different semiautomatic guns at 5th and moore streets. the gunfire began just before 11:00 last night. you can see in our video a bullet hole in the window of one of the homes. police say three people who were inside had to hit the floor when the shooting started. the shooting victims are all

listed in stable condition. police believe one of them may be a suspect in this case. investigators are checking surveillance cameras in the area. take a look at this new video we have in of a shooting in delaware. new castle county police hope you can help identify the men you can see there. you can see them shooting at another person off screen. police were called to three neighborhoods in new castle county last friday for multiple gunshots. there's a rewardç leading to suspect's arrest and conviction. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> getting ready for another sunny, hot day, 19 minutes after 4:00. we're in the upper 70s right now. 79 degrees in philadelphia. you'll notice a few scattered clouds to start with this morning, a few thicker clouds to the south and clear skies to the north. this is easton, easton pennsylvania saw some fog in the area yesterday. not going to happen today. 79 degrees in philadelphia. those clear skies cooler. look at the warm temperatures

for the jersey shore and delaware, too, is at 80 degrees. interior new jersey, a warm start for mullica hill, 78 degrees. lumberton is in the low 70s. clear skies in princeton, 65 degrees. there are clouds, i'm tracking some showers through maryland, just some very light showers moving right along 95. you might see a few sprinkles but not a lot more than that this morning. a few brief showers in delaware and then moving into south jersey. those showers are heading due east. they will not last all day. we'll see clearing skies and it's back into the 90s this afternoon. you can see the steadier rain is still over maryland this morning. a few rain drops over newark. most likely not in reaching the ground just yet. they're evaporating before they hit the ground. that may change first thing this morning. they're looking at an all day rainfall at all. another hot day, heating back into the low 90s this afternoon, 92 degrees. a chance we'll see some late-day scattered showers tomorrow, just a chance.

91 degrees, the high temperature. and a chance of more thunderstorms for friday, saturday and sunday but look what happens, finally to the temperatures. today and tomorrow, the heat wave continues into the low 90s. then we're finally looking at high temperatures in the upper 80s, which is typical for this time of year. sunshine on send. monday we will see 86 degrees and then tuesday, plenty of sunshine. back into the upper 80s and then a little bit of a warmup. we're into the very low 90s for wednesday, thursday and friday of next week. let's see what's happening on the roads. jessica boyington with a look at your first alert traffic. >> thanks, bill. we're starting off on the schuylkill expressway. these are our cameras around montgomery drive. no big problems in either direction right now. you can see into center city, a 12-minute trip if you're headed eastbound from the blue route to the vine street expressway. speeds well into the 60s also. watching 202, same story. it's early for us to start to see any of the big morning

volumes or delays north or southbound from 30 to the schuylkill expressway. most it's going to take you right now is 12 minutes. speeds into the 60s as well. vehicle fire, there's one reported out in montgomery county, out in plymouth, industrial way and ridge pike. we'll check in for volume and area bridges as well when i come back. katy? jessica, thanks. get ready for more traffic trouble if you use part of city avenue starting next week. construction will begin tuesday on the stretch of city avenue between 76, the schuylkill expressway, and lancaster avenue. penndot is putting up new traffic lights that will react to demand rather than timing. there will be changes at 17 intersections including new lights, new push buttons for pedestrians, better pavement markings and curb ramps for wheelchairs. the project will be done in november of 2017 and crews work from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. vai, tracy, back to you at the
