6:01 pm
at the philadelphia convention late this afternoon, democrats await tonight's headline speech by president obama. just the day after hillary clinton's historic nomination. but states away down in florida, republican donald trump stole headlines, bringing up clinton's e-mail scandal and apparently encouraging russian hackers to dig in. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you're able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. i think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press. >> i have to say i'm perplexed by this, by trump. >> reporter: even chuck todd, moderator of nbc's "meet the press" was surprised. he expects tonight's democratic speeches already planned to focus generally on national security will sharpen their tone against the republican nominee. >> i think now you're going to see a lot of rewrites in speeches, a lot of russian mentions, trump mentions by biden and obama.
6:02 pm
>> reporter: among the democratic faithful here at the wells fargo center, we found a buzz of outrage. >> treason. this to me is nearly a trees onus act. unfathomable that a person would suggest something and say it out loud. >> he has no edit function. he has no ability or temperament to be president. and he's breaking the law in asking people to break the law for him. >> reporter: trump couched his remarks in the claim that hillary clinton gets away with explanations that he does not. it's likely we will hear speakers tonight paint clinton as someone who is prepared to lead this unstable world. jim, back up to you. >> all right, george. jake sullivan who is a senior policy adviser for hillary for america had this statement here on your screen. this has to be the first time that a major presidential candidate has actively encouraged a foreign power to conduct espionage against his

6:04 pm
against her back in 2008. joe biden, he considered it this year. but tonight both are expected to talk about what they have learned about hillary clinton, and make the case for why she should be president. >> these are two men who have seen hillary in action. they have been in the situation room with her. they have seen her make tough decisions. she advised the president, advised the vice president on decisions on whether to go in and take out osama bin laden. they'll talk about her leadership. why she is the candidate most qualified to be commander in chief. >> reporter: and beyond that, folks here are just excited to hear from barack obama and joe biden. some of them really worked to get both of them elected. i talked to some folks in the illinois delegation, one saying about barack obama, he is our guy. jim? >> lauren mayk on the floor for tonight's big speeches.
6:05 pm
it is a big night for delaware. tonight vice president joe biden plans to argue the world is too complicated for donald trump. the white house said biden will outline trump's lack of experience to handle national security. the democratic party has helped change american history. we know that. we've seen it. president barack obama became the first african-american president. and last night, hillary clinton became the first woman nominated for president by a major party. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas has one woman's story about witnessing a lot of history. >> reporter: at 102 years old, you would think geraldine has seen it all. until yesterday. >> and 61 votes for the next president of the united states of america! hillary rodham clinton! >> reporter: when she helped hillary clinton become the first presidential nominee of a major political party.

there's more than just heat and humidity here, there's a disturbance moving in from the west. some of these storms could be pretty strong. strong gusty winds. a lot of lightning with it. even into the afternoon. could quiet down a little bit tomorrow evening. look what happens overnight tomorrow night. and into friday. another batch friday morning. that could be the heaviest of all. and that's why there's a flood threat here. because any areas that get hit over and over really do have the potential of seeing some flooding. a lot of moisture in the atmosphere here during the day on friday. and finally, friday night, we start to dry out, sets us up for a nicer day on saturday. but then another disturbance comes in sunday. we have first alert for late tomorrow, into friday for much of the area. does not include the lehigh valley or the poconos. thursday night through friday night. first of all, the threat of the strong thunderstorms, and then the flash flood threat. so we've got a double threat out there that we're going to have to keep our eye on.
6:20 pm
friday is a stormy day in many parts of the area. saturday looks like the best day of the weekend. not 90s as you can see. and then sunday, another day with lots of showers and storms. so at least we're getting rid of the heat wave out here. but we are going to have to pay for it with at least some thunderstorms. especially friday and especially sunday. then as we go into next week, not only are we not in the 90s, but we're also not seeing a whole lot of rain. we're going to have a wind off the ocean making things a little bit more comfortable. i'm john clark. we found out this afternoon a key eagle was injured while training last week. doug peterson talks about the arrest of nigel bradham. the phillies get rocked in miami. it's all next.

6:25 pm
being in the city of philadelphia, things get magnified a little bit. >> with the entire team practicing together for the first time tomorrow, doug peterson is going to run his training camp a lot like andy reid did. there will be more hitting than there was with chip kelly. >> anytime you've got a change coming in, you've got to set the tone. and obviously we've got a lot of new pieces. coaches and players. so physicality can separate the men from the boys. >> this schedule that we're about to partake in training camp, took this team to many nfc championship games, took them to the super bowl. >> we're counting down to the eagles' first preseason game august 11th against the bucks at the linc at 7:00. it will be on csn and cozy tv. we have pre and post-game shows as well. all preseason games are in the nbc family of networks. nick foles has been released by the rams. phillies finishing out their
