severe storms are rolling in this afternoon. and we could get a lot of heavy rain over the next several hours. let's take a live look outside over the ben franklin bridge. it is gray and wet out there. the rain tapered off a little bit, but you can still see gloomy skies out there. the radar shows very active scene right now. let's get right to first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz tracking these storms for us. >> jim, the problem is, these storms are moving so slowly. and a little bit chaotically. so this is the main area, as you can see, with the lightning strikes generally south of the philadelphia area. there's another fairly large storm up in berks county. the rest of the area we're dealing with heavy rain. because we're not dealing wa lot of movement. very often you get severe thunderstorms that move 40, 50, 60 miles an hour. these are moving 10 to 15 miles an hour, redeveloping in some areas, falling apart in others. and so as you can see in
4:01 pm
philadelphia itself, we're not seeing as heavy of rain as we are across the river. gloucester county really getting hit. glassboro getting some of the heaviest rain right now going into winslow. a very, very slow movement, and that is why there is a flood advisory for much of the philadelphia area, northern delaware much of south jersey here. that is until 8:00 tonight. there will be some localized flooding out there as more rain continues. the storm in berks county not moving very much. there is a flood advisory for that, too. the doppler estimates in the blues, many areas already over an inch. and some over two, as you can see in the purplest colors. mostly in delaware. we've got one area north of dover tracking over three inches of rain. and much of that has fallen just in two or three hours. another big burst farther to the north in delaware.
4:02 pm
but in bucks county, for example, mercer county, not a drop of rain so far during the day today. you can see some of these rainfall amounts, two, three, four inches of rain. as we go through the evening, we're going to have more showers and storms move through the area. it's not going to be raining all night. but the threat of rain will continue all night as another area moves in from the west later on during the evening, and through the overnight hours. another round of very heavy rain on top of what has already occurred, could certainly cause some more flooding. i'll be back more with the timing and what to expect for the weekend a little bit later. >> glenn, we'll check back with you again. thanks so much. hillary clinton takes the stage at the democratic national convention, hoping to persuade americans she's the person best qualified to run the country. it will be the first speech of its kind given by a woman. aundrea cline-thomas spoke to voters today about her speech.

who can help control gun violence in our country. let's go back to the nbc 10 studios and chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz tracking those strong storms this afternoon. >> some places are really getting dumped on with a lot of rain. other places haven't seen a drop during the day today. we've got a lot of clouds around. over the last few hours we've seen the storms, some of them develop, some of them dissipate. they're not really moving in any organized way. other than the fact that the worst of it continues to be just south of philadelphia itself. but we also have a cluster up in berks county, right along i-78. tremendous rains right near hamburg. and that area is not really moving very much. we've got another area down in south jersey. and unfortunately, that's around vineland, which got flooded earlier. you can see in philadelphia, this is more in the way of
4:17 pm
moderate rain as far as the amounts are concerned. but parts of philadelphia, this is really interesting. up in northeast philly, for example, that's no rain. but in extreme south philly, that's in the blue. that's close to two inches of rain. and in other areas, it's over two inches of rain, as we go into delaware. this is well south of wilmington. and some places as you can see here, almost four inches of rain just southeast of bair and north of delaware city. four inches in just a few hours. that can certainly cause significant flooding. here's the futurecast as we go through the rest of the afternoon, and into the evening. more showers and storms. at least scattered around. and even if we do see a bit of a break later tonight, we've got more coming in from the west. so by even tomorrow morning, we could see some showers and storms in parts of the area. we may see some improvement as
4:18 pm
we go into the afternoon. maybe even a little bit of sunshine. wouldn't that be nice. and then perhaps more isolated showers tomorrow afternoon. i'm not expecting a whole lot of rain tomorrow. the flood advisory goes from parts of philadelphia all the way down into northern delaware. that's until 8:00. if you run into an area that's flooded, driving into a road and you don't know how deep it is, just don't bother trying to go through it. turn around. and you can see the flood advisory goes through parts of south philly, and northern delaware. this other flood advisory for the heavy area of storms on i-78. another flood advisory in new jersey near new hanover and out toward jackson township. of course, you want to know about the weekend. well, friday may actually be the best day of the next three. because there are other disturbances that are going to be coming in over the weekend, with showers and thunderstorms. it's not going to be rain all

the time, not a total washout. but one thing that's happening here, we're not getting into the 90s. we hit 95 degrees during the day today. look at the shore. we have the threat of showers and storms, sperkly on sunday i think will be the best threat. and then also tomorrow at the shore. saturday may be the best day. you can see the temperatures, nowhere near 90 degrees as we head into early next week. we've got an east wind coming in, a fair amount of clouds. and then later next week, and the following weekend, we may start to get back up near 90. >> all right, glenn. count on nbc 10 on air and online to bring you any forecast and any warnings about these storms. and still ahead, a boardwalk bummer. why the owner of fun town pier said fun will be returning following this raging fire that destroyed the iconic jersey shore landmark. fatal consequences, how all those red light cameras watching drivers at intersections really impact safety on our roads.

welcome back, everyone. right now at 4:30, we're closing in on the final night of the democratic national convention. the session officially under way now, looking live at the wells fargo center, where today's session gaveled in just a short time ago. we just heard the national anthem. tonight's theme, stronger together. i'm jim rosenfield coming to you live from the wells fargo center in south philadelphia once again for the dnc. the anticipation building here for tonight's final speech when the delegation will hear from the nominee herself. tonight is all about hillary clinton, the first female nominee from a major party will take to the convention stage to accept the nomination. hillary's speech tops our headlines. she made a brief appearance on night two of the dnc. then she appeared on stage last night after president obama's pointed remarks.
4:31 pm
clinton will be introduced by her daughter, chelsea. tonight's musical guest, katy perry and other speakers set to address the delegation, and michael nutter, and katy mcginty also scheduled to speak earlier in the evening. just a few moments ago, "nbc nightly news" anchor lester holt stopped by here to talk about the importance of tonight's clinton speech. lester holt, thanks for being here once again. last night, big night for president obama, vice president biden. they really hit it out of the park, teed it up for hillary clinton tonight. >> set the bar pretty high. we know what kind of speaker she is, nobody expects that kind of speech. but people are going to be looking for passion. this has been all about reintroducing her to the american public, and trying to help her connect. she'll get teed up, of course, by chelsea clinton, who told matt lauer she hopes she won't cry during that moment. they'll have a long video and lead up to hillary clinton. but fair to say, speech of her
4:32 pm
life. >> a speech we understand she's been working on for weeks and weeks now. we're keeping also an eye on severe weather that's moving into our area. so let's send it back to our studio, and glenn "hurricane" schwartz. gle glenn? >> some parts of the area have already seen two, three, even four inches of rain in a relatively short amount of time. and there's been some flooding already. and there's likely to be more as we go through the evening and overnight. not a whole lot of areas of lightning right now. we do see some just north of dover. but the heaviest of the rain, we've got one area up to the north. now, what's really weird about this is that everything is moving differently. so we have this stuff moving north toward vineland. we have this area moving a little east. down to the south, this is moving toward the south.
4:33 pm
so when you have a weak flow of winds high up in the atmosphere, you don't really get a chance for these storms to move out. this part is moving southward toward reading. this part of it, not really moving at all. so we have this flood threat along with the severe thunderstorm threat in berks county. this is the area of the flood advisory, from south philly all the way down to northern delaware. and another area in new jersey, and that area in northern berks county as well. so the flood advisory until 8:00. and there may be more rain that comes in after 8:00. overnight. this is the map of the radar estimated rainfall. when you're getting into the purple colors, that's over two inches of rain. we're seeing more and more of that show up in mostly delaware and extreme south jersey. some parts of the area, bucks county, upper montgomery county,
4:34 pm
mercer county, places along the shore haven't gotten anything during the day. that's what happens. some people get too much, other people get nothing. here's another area. this is, again, in the upper berks county region, with one to two inches of rain. westchester had some heavier rain earlier. this is in northern delaware, this area in the purple getting two to three, even more than three inches of rain. we'll talk more about where this rain moves as we head toward the weekend in just a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. watch here at flames shoot from the engine from a plane that had just taken off in dallas. the pilot of the american airlines airbus headed to seattle said it was a problem with the compressor. a passenger said no one panicked and they praised the crew after that jet landed safely. take a look at this chilling footage of a burglar highlighted at the top of the stairs, robbing a house with the owners inside.
