clinton's campaign was hacked as part of a cyber attack on democrats. reuters said the department of justice is investigating whether cyber hacking attacks on democrats have threatened u.s. security. nbc news has not confirmed this report. but we will continue to follow this breaking story and bring you new details as soon as we get them. tonight the city is celebrating what most experts say was a successful convention. in fact, some people are saying the big winner from the whole thing is the city of philadelphia. nbc 10's drew smith live in center city this evening. drew, you just heard from city leaders, what did they have to say about all this? >> reporter: jim, there's a sense that the city is spending all this time on preparations for the big event, decorating the city. you see it all over the place. they say it was really worth it. one convention leader telling me he's never been prouder of the city of philadelphia.

enjoy the donkeys while they last. all the marketing for the 2016 democratic national convention will soon leave philadelphia. but the memories of this week will likely stay. >> we were a showcase to the country. we handled the event phenomenally. >> reporter: 2,600 police officers worked this major event, handling an estimated 13,000 protesters in intense heat. >> the police did a great job. not only were they very professional, but they were very friendly. >> reporter: former governor ed rendell has been working on this week for more than a year. >> we wanted a flawless convention. a little problem with traffic, but almost a flawless convention. >> reporter: >> they did an incredible job under difficult circumstances. >> reporter: the payoff is far from over. >> all the attention, all the coverage, all the visitors that came here and really enjoyed themselves, i think we will see this for months and years to

come. >> reporter: hotels really were the big winners in the city this week. most booked solid all the way through this weekend. from the delegates and visitors here, planning to put aside politics and just have a little fun this weekend. live in center city, drew smith, nbc 10 news. thanks, drew. drivers heading home tonight should pack a little extra patience. traffic has been building an i-95 after penndot reopened all the lanes for trucks. they had been banned from 95 during the dnc because of security concerns. although the picture right there shows traffic moving pretty well at this point. the end of the conventions means it's time for the presidential campaign to kick into high gear now. democrat hillary clinton and her running mate tim kaine focused their efforts today here in pennsylvania, with stops in philadelphia, also in montgomery county. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas has more on clinton's push for pennsylvania. >> the clinton family and the kaine family. >> reporter: they're beginning a bus tour at temple university.

they're trying to widen their lead in pennsylvania, shore up the base and sway the estimated 8% of undecided voters. >> we're going to be drawing that contrast between hillary clinton's plans for our country, and donald trump's empty promises and no plans for the country. >> reporter: now that the democratic nomination is officially secured, the campaign is on the attack, aimed at donald trump. >> i think she's got to do that. she's got to continue to show that she's different than he is. >> reporter: almost in the same breath, contrasted with promises. >> we're going to break through the gridlock in washington, and make the biggest investment in new good paying jobs since world war ii. >> reporter: claims that resonate with former bernie sanders supporter. >> just as long as my views are out there, and progress is being made in the right direction, i'm happy. >> reporter: as the bus tour moves on to the next stop, hillary clinton and tim kaine hope to continue the momentum

universe, and millions of people are left out in the cold, he said. this afternoon trump rallied supporters in colorado. before he took the stage, trump, he took to twitter. at one point saying, quote, crooked hillary clinton mentioned me 22 times in her very long and very boring speech. many of her statements were lies and fabrications, he said. here's what he said about her speech. while he campaigned today in colorado. >> it was all cliches. they used the little tweak one on me, about tweet. she said something about the campaign. donald trump doesn't know how to campaign, something like that. i just beat 16 people and i'm beating her. okay? >> trump also said at the rally that bernie sanders, quote, sold his soul to the devil in deciding to support hillary for president. sky force 10 live over breaking news. this is not it. this is it right here. emergency crews trying to rescue

a man who fell into a sewer. this is in the hunting park section of the city near 9th and pike streets. you see all the rescue crews right around that hole there. officials are saying, though, that the man was swept away by water, and they're now trying to locate him. we're going to keep an eye on this situation. we'll let you know of any updates here, and on the nbc 10 app. to our weather now. the end of the longest heat wave of the summer. temperatures are much more bearable today. you're looking live at broad and locust streets in center city as people head out to get started on the weekend. unfortunately, for most of us, our weekend will include a chance for storms anyway. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here now with a look at what we can expect in our neighborhoods. glenn? >> yeah, jim, we're not going to be expecting temperatures in the 90s over the weekend. but we are going to be seeing a good deal of cloud cover. we did break the heat wave with a high officially of 89 degrees.

pretty close, but not quite there. saturday and sunday we're in the mid-80s. remember, we were 95 yesterday, with the high humidity. and it's in the mid to upper 80s across much of the area now. the jersey shore, cooler than that. a little sea breeze, atlantic city 77, ocean city 77, cape may courthouse 78. and cape may point 78 degrees. things are pretty quiet on the radar. we've seen a lot of sunshine this afternoon, after the heavy rain early this morning. a couple little showers up in the poconos. but very, very light. that is not the case in northwestern pennsylvania and ohio. a lot of that activity is headed this way for tomorrow. as you can see, we could even see some of those thunderstorms developing before noontime tomorrow. so enjoy the morning hours, because that may be the only purely dry time for the weekend. the jersey shore, though, does look like it's going to be dry during the daytime hours

tomorrow. we'll talk more about the rest of the weekend and the timing in just a few minutes. >> okay, glenn. police are searching for a man they say set a south jersey bathroom on fire to try to hide evidence from a crime. it happened in medford, burlington county. craig first fled a cvs pharmacy after trying to buy painkillers with fake prescriptions. then inside a restaurant across the street, on route 70, they say he set the evidence on fire in a restroom trash can causing a lot of panic in the restaurant. fortunately it was put out before anyone was hurt. the owner and police, grateful no major damage was done. >> it was 6:25 in the evening. the restaurant was full at the time. and could have caused a significant tragedy had it not been extinguished. >> three women who were arrested helped police identify craig. philadelphia place say a man attacked and killed his girlfriend in germantown. officers were called to green

street just after 10:30 this morning. the 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. police took her 47-year-old boyfriend into custody there. a federal appeals court has refused to dismiss corruption charges against senator bob menendez of new jersey. an attorney for menendez argued the charges should be tossed because of a constitutional clause that protects the actions of city lawmakers. the menendez lawyer argued that the senator's meeting with government officials were held to discuss policy matters, not to benefit a wealthy friend. prosecutors allege the friend plied menendez with gifts in exchange for political influence. there's a new twist in the septa slowdown to tell you about. regional rail riders will now have to buy tickets in advance to get out of center city. the new policy will require riders to buy passes at a ticket office before boarding at any stations in center city. septa spokesman said they made the change because of scheduling issues from the loss of more

now to an nbc 10 exclusive. in the past 45 minutes, lauren mayk spoke with hillary clinton and her running mate tim caine. she is the only reporter to speak with them during that campaign stop right there. she's joining us now live. lauren, what did they have to say? >> reporter: well, jim, we talked about the convention. we talked about what their relationship would be like if they were to win this election. and we also talked about the resistance that the campaign has been getting from some bernie sanders supporters. we saw that at the convention here in philadelphia this week. and i asked secretary clinton about that.

>> i talked to some of them, and they say they like some of the things that they are hearing you say. some of the things, the issues that they have championed. but they don't trust you. why should they trust you? >> well, look, i know how they feel. i ran a very hard campaign against president obama in 2008. and i had many, many supporters, if you go back and look at polls. very large percentages of my supporters who said they would not support him. and i very much appreciated senator sanders endorsing me first at our event together in new hampshire, then at the convention. it took me months to persuade some of my most hardy, resistant supporters to support president obama. i think we've moved actually more quickly. >> we'll have more from the interview coming up at 11:00.

including her description of that moment last night when she came out on stage, and saw her daughter chelsea, who had introduced her. we are going to hear what she said to her in that moment. jim? >> it had to be emotional, no doubt. lauren mayk, look forward to your further reports tonight at 11:00. there's a major push to recruit more police officers in the philadelphia suburbs. and today is a major deadline to attract men and women to joirn the force. deanna durante has more on the effort and why hiring has been hurting. >> we're looking for the best candidates. >> reporter: when you need the best, you need to cast a wide net. >> larger number of applicants. a more diverse, you know, cross-section of our communities by reaching out to a larger population base. and then to make it more streamlined. >> reporter: looking to hire new officers in bucks and montgomery

counties. they all joined forces to attract a large pool of recruits. police say the challenges are all the same. finding people who want the job, and meet the needs of a diverse community. >> i noticed that over the last five years, that each year we seem to lose 15% to 20%. >> reporter: there you nr factors hurting the hiring process. >> we're getting fewer and fewer applicants. i think there's a number of reasons for that. one being, just the sentiment today. in policing. and a lot of the negative publicity about policing. >> reporter: other issues shrinking the pool is red flags in the background check and inappropriate activity on social media. those looking for a few good men and women, the way to change the perception is join the ranks. >> that would be the best way to change the sentiment. it's a challenging job. it always has been. it's probably more challenging

now than ever. >> reporter: he stresses the applicant must have background checks and satisfy education requirements. it's kept the best of the best from making the cut. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. we started off the day with rain and thunderstorms. but it sure got nice out there. and still relatively comfortable. 88 in philadelphia. 89 in delaware on average for the high temperatures today. wilmington at 88. odessa 87. glasgow only 83. it's cooler right at the beaches as temperatures get knocked down by the wind off the ocean. the ocean's kind of warm, by the way. about 75 degrees. so that's pretty nice. rehoboth, dewey and bethany beach, 76 and 77 degrees. yesterday we got to 95.

the hottest that we got to during this heat wave was 97. felt like about 106. today's high officially 89. not even that warm as we go into the weekend. a lot of clouds coming in. now, this morning, this is the way it started. 6:00 a.m. right in there, got clobbered yesterday. they get clobbered again this morning. and less rain up to the north. that moved through pretty quickly. and by 9:00 a.m., it was pretty much out of here. and then we left with the rest of the day, pretty nice weather. radar estimated rainfall, now much of the worst weather is delaware and south jersey, but we have this area up in northwest berks county, another one in chester county, but other than that, it's pretty much all south of wilmington, let alone philadelphia. and these are the areas that are most vulnerable for flooding over the weekend. saturday and sunday, if you get any downpours in this area, they

got four, five inches of rain in the last 24 hours. gloucester county, over four inches of rain. you can get some of that flooding. so keep an eye on the radar as we go through the weekend. you can see it on our weather app at any time. and we even notify you when there's heavy rain moving toward your neighborhood. there are some of those showers. pennsylvania and into delaware. and we start off the day tomorrow dry. but watch what happens. there are those showers and thunderstorms. tomorrow afternoon, the shore and delaware beaches generally dry tomorrow afternoon. but there's more storms tomorrow night. and we're going to be getting more on sunday as well. so the temperatures are down a little bit. monday, with an east wind, down even more. but we start getting some drier weather tuesday, wednesday, thursday. and by friday and next weekend, we may go back up into the 90s.

the game can be seen live on csn and kozy tv. sean mccoy spoke for the first time since he was investigated for his alleged role in a bar fight in philadelphia last february. charges were not filed in the case. mccoy was not punished by the nfl. but he says he still bears responsibility. >> i had a long talk with mr. goodell. i talked about the incident, and really, just be -- back in june when the whole situation, you know, the guy that i want to be for this team, you know, things like that just can't happen. there's no excuses for it. you don't hear of other guys like peyton manning or, you know, tom brady getting in incidents like that. >> very true. the phillies take on the braves in atlanta. the last loss, back in may. coverage begins at 7:00 on csn with phillies pregame live.
