here with a forecast for today and into the rest of the week. hi, glenn. >> hey, katy. not everybody is going to get thunderstorms today, but those that do have the potential for some very heavy rain. and that's why we have a first alert out for the areas that had the most rain over the weekend. p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley, mercer county new jersey, some parts of that county had five to six inches of rain saturday night. the first alert is through this evening for the thunderstorms and the potential for some localized flash flooding. right now, we have a few showers down in extreme south jersey. not moving very fast. not especially heavy. but it's a sign that we don't have much wind in the atmosphere to move these storms along. so they're not going to be moving very quickly this afternoon when they develop. just a couple of isolated ones way out by burkes county. the temperature only going up slowly because of all the cloud cover. that's delaying the development of these thunderstorms.

it doesn't mean they're not going to happen. we just have to wait a couple of hours extra for some of these showers and storms to form. but by 2:00, they're starting to pop up. temperatures into the mid 80s, but with a high humidity, it will feel like it's more like 90 or 92. and then the thunderstorm threat goes into the evening hours through the lehigh valley. just about any part of the area could see thunderstorms this afternoon. but the places that got the heaviest rain over the weekend are the most vulnerable. we'll talk more about the placement of those storms with the full forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn, we'll see you then. police in montgomery county are investigating a deadly shooting. it happened just before midnight at an apartment complex on the 100 block of forest avenue in ambler. matt delucia is live there at the scene with some new details. do they have a suspect, and what are you hearing from the sister of one of the victims? >> reporter: well, i did speak with the sister earlier this

morning. she is devastated, as you can imagine. she got the call around 2:00 this morning that her sister had been killed and now she wants to know what happened. >> i can't even cry. i'm, like, in shock. >> reporter: kimberly says her sister, 54-year-old janice, lived at the forest garden apartments for seven years, never had any problems that she knew of, and would often go to work, come home, and take care of her son. >> she was my last relative. that's it. i don't have anybody now. somebody took it from me. >> reporter: police were called to the complex just before midnight. neighbor maria florentino said she heard gunshots. >> i'm surprised because i've never seen things like this in this neighborhood. it's always nice and it's always safe. that's why i always have lived here. >> reporter: investigators from the montgomery county district attorney's office were here throughout the night, combing for clues in the dark of night. the bodies of two victims including janice were taken out of the building as family

members anguished over the many questions, chief among them, why. >> she didn't deserve this. it's not right. somebody heard something. they need to come forward. >> and as we take another live look, you can still see that there is a crime scene at the complex. police have been back and forth all morning. you see one police car parked there in front of the building. no word of any arrests at this point. we're also waiting for an update from police. and the identity of that second person who was killed here last night. live in ambler this morning, i'm matt delucia, nbc 10 news. police are investigating a homicide. this morning, the body of a man was found near the corner of keystone street. the victim's name has not yet been released. repair crews are on the scene of a water main break in the frankfurt section of philadelphia. nbc 10 was on the scene. the main broke around 6:30 this

morning. we're told some homes did lose water service and septa is diverting its buses around that area. two former temple university police officers are under arrest in the murder of a woman in the germantown section of philadelphia from friday night. erin wright and marquee robinson face murder and aggravated assault charges in the death of wright's girlfriend. wright resigned from the temple police force back in 2002. robinson was fired this saturday after charges were filed against him. a 4-year-old boy is recovering this morning after shooting himself in the hand. police tell us the boy shot himself last night in philadelphia's germantown section. this morning, investigators are still trying to learn how the boy got the gun. there have been no arrests made yet. the red cross is helping three people left homeless by a fire in southwest philadelphia. nbc 10 was along the scene right there at almond street. the fire broke out at around 2:00 this morning. crews arrived in minutes to put it out. no one was hurt. a woman who lived there told nbc

10 no one was home when the flames started. she believes it's a case of arson. investigators will be looking into her claims and the cause of the fire. in gloucester county, investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that destroyed a lumberyard. hundreds of firefighters battled the flames in franklin township that wiped out a longtime family-owned business. the lumberyard is a total loss. this is video of the fast-moving flames. with no hydrants in the area, fire crews had to bring in tanker trucks. some of the water had to come from a nearby lake. about 200 firefighters met even more challenges in dousing those flames. >> the firefighters are hampered by the hot water. low water pressure. we did have winds earlier that were blowing around pretty good. >> i was in my car, but just got to say hey, it happens. >> three firefighters were treated for heat-related

illnesses. it's not yet known if the family will rebuild their business. it's 11:07, and now to the late nest the ongoing septa slowdown. today, a new policy could affect your commute if you are relying on the regional rail system and departing from center city, philadelphia. riders will have to buy tickets before boarding at any station in philadelphia between 3:00 and 6:30 this afternoon and evening. septa made the move because it's scheduling issues after the loss of more than 100 structurally deficient rail cars. all right, time now for a check on the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington. the camera behind you is moving and probably looking for an incident that you're going to tell us about. >> yes. what's happening here on 95, it's one of the only things we've seen so far today that made any real delays and that's their slow-moving maintenance vehicles. construction vehicles making their way down the southbound side of 95.

it started around the street road and headed southbound. now they're headed toward center city, so that's why we see a little bit of a slowdown with lane restrictions, because they just have this point up ahead. 29 minutes right now southbound. but that's not anything too serious. we're also seeing some 20-minute delays for septa. a thorndale train is running 20 minutes late, but other than that, mass transit is pretty much running on time or close to schedule. there's an accident on north york road. and if you're heading out the door in new jersey, no problems headed northbound into philadelphia. this is the 42 freeway around loop 41. maybe you're headed down the shore. no problems doing that either. katy? >> jessica, thanks for that update. a wake is being held today and tomorrow for a philadelphia firefighter who died last month. friends, family, and fellow firefighters will pay their respects to gabriel lee at deliverance evangelistic church. lee was a 17-year veteran of the philadelphia fire department. he died on the job, but we're

welcome back. decision 2016. today, republican donald trump will make his second campaign visit to pennsylvania since accepting his nomination for president. trump will stump for votes at a high school in mechanicsburg, which is just outside of harrisburg. last week, he held a rally in

scranton. pennsylvania is a key battleground state where analysts say trump can draw support from working class voters. both political parties are dealing with fallout from political attacks. the democrats for charges of rigging the debate schedule, putting two of the three opposite nfl games. the republicans for donald trump's comments about the family of a u.s. soldier who died in combat. nbc news national correspondent edward lawrence has more. >> reporter: during his first campaign stop today since the democratic national convention, donald trump made further comments he made about a soldier who died serving in iraq. the khan family spoke during the democratic national convention, criticizing trump's stance on muslims and trump's sacrifices. >> if you look at his wife, she was standing there, she had nothing to say. maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say, you tell me. >> on the "today" show this morning, the khans say it isn't true. >> it doesn't have to do

anything with my religion. my religion doesn't prohibit me to do whatever i want to do. >> reporter: in a statement, trump called captain khan a hero. saying the real problem is radical islam, but tweeted this morning that mr. khan viciously attacked him at the dnc and is now doing the same on tv. >> this candidate amazes me, his ignorance. he can get up and malign the entire nation. >> reporter: hillary clinton didn't let up, hoping to ensure trust in her versus her gop rival. >> i don't want folks to be misled, to listen to the rhetoric and the demagoguery. >> reporter: warren buffett will introduce hillary clinton at her event in nebraska. donald trump will be in ohio, then pennsylvania. a new cbs news poll out this morning shows that hillary clinton got a four-point bump out of the democratic convention. she now leads donald trump among voters nationally 46% to 39%.

edward lawrence, nbc news, washington. >> nbc 10 was on the road with the clinton-kaine tour. two of our producers followed the tour all weekend. they'll be following the donald today. you can get the behind-the-scenes access through the nbc 10 app and on all of our social media platforms. nearly washed away. that's what happened to a historic town near baltimore when torrential rains triggered deadly flash flooding. take a look at this video from saturday night in ellicott city, maryland. you can see good samaritans braving flood waters to rescue a woman who was trapped in her car. the flooding killed two people, destroyed dozens of vehicles, and left main street there in ruins. county officials compared the town to a war zone. >> cars everywhere. sidewalks missing. roads partially gone. utility polls down.

buildings, the bottom floor completely gone. foundations completely gone. so i don't think we can compare this to anything we've seen before. >> county officials declared a state of emergency. they said the area got a month's worth of rain in just two hours. yesterday, members of the pennsylvania incident management team headed to maryland to help ellicott city recover from the deadly flooding we just showed you. the team will provide logistical support to county officials. members are expected to be there for the next week. >> now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> that's some of the most amazing video i've ever seen in this part of the country, to see water rushing that fast through a town, extremely dangerous. now, we have just a few showers around right now. some of them in south jersey. some still in delaware bay. but the thing about it is they're not moving very much. take a look at this.

now, it's over the bay. but in the last hour, it's in the same spot. and when you get that kind of nonmovement, that's where you have the potential for flash flooding. at the same time, this one has been moving to the southeast. some start moving, some don't. and that's why we've got to watch them all day and all night. a few showers developing by lancaster, and one or two -- there's one right by limerick, starting to develop. it's being delayed because of all the clouds. it will take a while for the heat to build up. but we've got a first alert out. we've got tropical-type downpours that are going to be occurring in some of these storms. and that's why the p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley, burkes county, and especially mercer county and jersey are the most vulnerable because they have the most rain in the last 24 hours or so. it's through this evening, later this afternoon as especially and into this evening for those

thunderstorms with some heavy rain and localized flash flooding. now, of course, the other thing, if you step outside, you can feel it. it is warm and steamy. it was extremely warm yesterday. it was 90 degrees for the high. today, the temperature may not reach 90, but it's going to feel like it's in the 90s. there's 2:00, feels like temperatures in the mid 90s. in parts of delaware and south jersey, the humidity is just incredible. we've got some extremely uncomfortable weather. now, finally, it starts dying down as we go into the evening hours. and as we go into tomorrow, it's not going to be feeling anywhere near as humid. you can see the future cast, you go through the afternoon, a few showers and thunderstorms developing. some of them on the heavy side. philadelphia area and northern suburbs, these are the areas

that got hit the hardest. we have to keep an eye on that especially. even parts of delaware and south jersey got hit hard late last week. and so they don't necessarily need any significant rain either. as we go through the night tonight, things quiet down a little bit. but tomorrow morning, we once again have the threat of some showers and into tomorrow afternoon. but then things really start to dry out, as we get into wednesday and that will start changing things. so the planner as we go through the day today. we've got the threat of showers. not only into the afternoon, but into the nighttime and tomorrow morning as well. lehigh valley, temperatures barely up near 80 degrees at the jersey. we're not getting to 80, and we have those shower threats. we're also watching in the tropics, miami is up here. this could become a tropical storm this the caribbean sea

scientists discovered two toxins in the vapor. the chemicals used to create artificial smoke, turned into carcinogens when heated. the hotter the e-cigarette coil becomes, the more chemicals are released in its vapors. the popularity of trampoline parks have jumped and so have emergency room visits. a new report says injuries at trampoline parks have shot up from 600 to 7,000 in just four years. the most common injuries seen are sprains and dislocations.

now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we have another threat for flash flooding today in parts of our area. some parts of the shore already saw rain this morning. here's a live look down the shore at cape may, where it looks pretty decent right now. but as glenn "hurricane" schwartz is going to tell you, some people could see some significant storms out of this latest system moving through. nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us now. glenn, what do you know? >> well, there are going to be showers and thunderstorms developing, number one. number two, they're not going to be moving very quickly. and number three, they're going to have a lot of moisture with them. that is not a great combination, especially considering how much rain has already fallen in the last several days. and the areas most of all that

got hit hardest yesterday, the p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley, mercer county, new jersey. some parts of mercer county got up to six inches of rain saturday night and had some pretty bad flooding. this afternoon and evening, that's when it's for. what we have now, we have some showers in extreme south jersey. they're weakening. but here we go. it's starting to develop right along the pennsylvania turnpike. just south of the turnpike and route 30. it's over the last hour. it's not moving. this one is not moving at all. and that's not a good sign here. you can see the lighter showers actually getting weaker in cape may county. but the fact that we've got showers that are not moving is a sign for when they do develop later today that they may not be moving much at all. we have clouds across just about

the entire area. low clouds, keeping the temperature down, 79 in philadelphia. and that's why, when you don't have more showers and storms on the radar right now. as we go through the afternoon, we may see some of the heaviest storms south of philadelphia. later on, they start going to the north. and that, again, since they've had so much rain in many of these northern areas, that's where we have to watch specifically. as we go through the night tonight, things quiet down, but more showers coming tomorrow. more on the timing of that with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn, thank you. a maryland town's main street resembled a virtual river over the weekend after a storm caused flooding that killed two people there and also caused widespread damage. it's been called the worst the area has seen in at least half a cinchry. nbc news national correspondent tammy leitner has the latest.

>> reporter: people desperately clinging to their cars when flash flood waters catch many by surprise. residents watching helplessly as their town gets destroyed. two people reported dead. over 100 rescued. this video shows residents creating a human chain to save a woman trapped in her car. the flood waters receded quickly. but the damage in the town of ellicott city, grim. cars stacked on top of one another. streets ripped apart. >> it looks like a set from a disaster movie. >> businesses on main street completely destroyed. >> it's just devastating to see some of the businesses that are totally gone, totally gone. like i don't even know where to start. >> reporter: the governor declaring a state of emergency. >> i just want to come and hug

weekend in what's being called the nation's worst ever hot air balloon accident. as nbc news national correspondent carrie sanders tells us, investigators know what happened, they just don't know why. >> reporter: this morning, as investigators work to find the cause of the tragedy, friends and family remember the 16 lives that were taken when the balloon hit those power lines. dr. matt and sunday rowan married less than a year. the balloon ride was a birthday gift. matt snapped this picture and texted it to his brother just 12 minutes before the crash. >> even down to the last minutes, there were still pictures of them smiling, laughing. >> reporter: the family of laura lee bradson and her daughter paige posted this memorial video on youtube. paige had recently giving birth to her first child. this trip, a belated mother's day gift. skip nichols was at the helm just after dawn. they lifted off from an air park in san antonio, flying due south

in a gentle 5-mile-per-hour breeze. but eight miles from where they launched, the balloon still hadn't gained the 170 feet it needed to kill those power lines and it drifted into the wires. erica gonzalez snapped this photo 24 minutes before the crash. her husband thought the balloon looked unusually close to the tree tops. >> were they climbing? >> no, they weren't. it was just, like, not going anywhere. >> reporter: recovered in a debris field, 14 electronic devices all sent to the ntsb lab in washington, hoping to extract clues. two years ago, the ntsb urged stronger regulations for commercial air balloon ride companies. but those recommendations were turned down by the faa. >> the ntsb, the board classified their response as an unacceptable response. >> reporter: that was kerry sanders reporting. overnight, the heart of texas hot air balloon rides company announced the suspension of operations, addressing families

and the victims in a statement, which reads in part, we are with you in spirit and prayer and share your grief. there are simply no words to express our profound sadness at this event that has taken away so many of our loved ones. video has just been released that purported to show the burning wreckage of a russian helicopter downed in syria. the video was taken in the first few moments after the helicopter crashed in idlib province today. russian president vladimir putin's spokesman said all five aboard the helicopter have been killed. it's the deadliest single incident for the russian military since its entrance in the syria civil war. russian defense officials say the mi-8 helicopter was shot down while returning to the russian air base on syria's coast after delivering humanitarian goods to the city of aleppo. a police chase is caught on camera in southern california. it ended on a residential street on san diego county but lasted

two hours. the chase began in los angeles county when police spotted the saturn weaving across lanes of a highway, as you see there. when the car finally stopped, officers approached it weapons drawn. they yanked the driver out of the car and handcuffed her. the orlando nightclub where 49 people were murdered will reopen as a memorial. the owners of pulse posted the announcement yesterday on social media. a foundation called one pulse was set up by the nightclub's owners to help the victims financially and contribute to the creation of a permanent memorial. in june, a man opened fire inside killing 49 people and injuring 53 others. the gunman was killed during a shootout with police. details about the memorial have not yet been released. today, president obama will turn his attention to disabled veterans. the president plans to address the national convention for disabled american veterans in atlanta. he's expected to discuss how the country can make sure veterans

it's 11:45 and we're following breaking news on the spread of the zika virus in florida. the governor says there are ten new infections of the zika virus in his state, likely transmitted by mosquitos, bringing the total to 14. the new cases are clustered in the same neighborhood in miami-dade county that was identified last week. the governor is asking for a federal agency response team. u.s. health officials do not expect widespread outbreaks like the ones we've seen in brazil and throughout latin america. nbc 10 news your help

16th. we have 62 hours, which is our lessons open to the public. and seven concerts of performers, including grammy award-winner paco cortez, russian pianist, and american pianist coming to join us, as well as 19 young pianists between the age of 11 and 24. highly selected. >> so tell me why adam is getting such a unique experience here that he wouldn't get in his native country of hungary? >> this festival is set to be international, highhe artists h and they are the best, which is wonderful because they come here and they can make friends and learn from each other. most of them are traveling to come to philadelphia. and they have opportunities to

perform, to learn, and also to attend our services and also by visiting. so there's a lot of festivals. >> you can probably attest to this, right, adam? >> yes, i was here two years ago. >> that segues into my question. tell us a little bit about what this opportunity has afforded you. >> i met a lot of really nice people. really talented musicians. what i always enjoy in these festivals. and i learned a lot. and i really enjoyed my stay in philadelphia. this is one of my favorite cities, i think. >> we like to hear that. not just for the music, but for the food and neighborhood feel of the city. >> yes. >> does the public get to listen

in? >> absolutely. they can visit our website, pypa.info. and there they can find all the information. >> i think i'm going recap with some of that info right now. there are a series of concerts and recitals open to the public from august 9th to the 16th at the curtis center of music. for more information, you can head to our website, nbc10.com or check out the nbc 10 app and we have a link to your website. >> fantastic. >> thank you both so much for joining us. and good luck with your studies. >> thank you. the countdown to rio is really on now. we are just four days away from the start of the 2016 olympics in brazil. the opening ceremony is set for friday night, and nbc 10 is the only place where you can see all the action. and just days ahead of the olympic games, the results of the study on rio's water quality have been released. according to the 16-month-long study, the waterways of rio de janeiro as filthy as ever.

not what people want to hear. they're contaminated with raw, human sewage, teeming with dangerous bacteria. not only are some 400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill if drinking the water and especially if taking part in water competitions, but tourists also face potentially serious health risks. jacqueline london is in rio right now and will have an exclusive all access pass to the olympics. she'll introduce you to the hometown athletes who are going for the gold in brazil. catch her first live report starting wednesday on nbc 10 news at 4:00. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, our weather story today, the main story, we've got a first alert for these localized very heavy thunderstorms that do not move very much, and so that's why there's the first alert. now, the most vulnerable areas in the p.a. suburbs just north and west of philadelphia itself, lehigh valley, burkes county, and in mercer county, parts of

mercer county got five to six inches of rain over the weekend, as you'll see. the timing is this afternoon, and into this evening. by tomorrow, things are going to be quieting down, but again, some locally heavy rain, and the possibility of some flash flooding. now, this is why we have a first alert out in some of the northern areas. let's take a look at the radar estimated rainfall over the weekend. here's trenton. look at this. parts of mercer county. 5.3, 6.5 inches just south of south brunswick, new jersey, and parts of middlesex county. we also have areas just north and west of the city itself in philadelphia. three inches. radner about three. so we have pockets in the area that have already had three-plus

inches of rain. the ground is saturated. and here's the other issue. the storm's not moving very much. so take a look at what we see here. it's not moving. my finger is right on the same spot. and that's how you can see, that's an indication of what we may face this afternoon. as we get more sunshine and we get more showers and storms developing. so we're going to have more issues like that. now, this is the fortunate thing. some of this activity weakens over time, and this is what's happening as we see those showers going into cape may county. but the temperatures, well, they're starting to go up, but they're only going up slowly because of all of that cloud cover that's been around. we had 90 yesterday. anywhere near that.

summerton is only 75. but as those clouds break up, that temperature is going to start jumping, and that's what we're seeing in parts of delaware. dover 81 degrees. and georgetown is 83. lincoln 83. even bethany beach 85 degrees. as soon as the sun come out, the temperature shoots up. the humidity is very high and then we get these thunderstorms. through the afternoon and into the evening, we may get some of the heaviest activity up in the northern areas this evening, and then later on, this is even into tomorrow, we have at least some showers in the area. now, as we go through the next several days, we have a little bit cooler weather tomorrow. less humid. still a chance of a few showers you just saw. by wednesday, we should be dry, more comfortable. thursday and friday, we start to heat up again, setting us up for

a pretty hot day on saturday with a chance of thunderstorms. and fairly warm weather, but nothing too exceptional for the rest of the weekend. and we'll be right back.
