4:15 pm
there, that is storm ranger 10. this is the first time we have shown it. it's the first of its kind anywhere and this is a mobile doppler radar. this line that you see here. that's the 30-mile range. that's the most effective range where we can see the storm all the way to the ground pretty much and that's why we're going see these storms in sum bland county as accurately as anybody can see them. this is right over cedarville now. the problem with some of these is that they are not moving very much, and the other thing that we can see on storm ranger 10 is the amount of rain, the intensity of the rain and give you an idea of when there's significant flood threat. the storms in parts of sussex county fortunately continue to spread towards the coast and maybe will get offshore in a couple of hours because it's really heavy. ocean pines at fenwick island,
4:16 pm
ocean view seeing some that have heavy rain. like i said, there's not much from philadelphia north and west here. there's some back by lebanon but that's a long way away and that was the area that was under the flash flood watch earlier. so the headlines, we're tracking the heavy rain and the cells are slow moving so that's why there would be the potential for localized flooding if one of those storms stayed in the same spot, of course. the clouds kept the temperature down so that is staying cool and the clouds will be with us tomorrow, too. keeping us on the cooler side. didn't knock out the humidity today, but it will go down a little bit tomorrow. not as brutal this week and by wednesday it's really going to be downright beautiful out there. now, as we go through the afternoon and into the evening this is what the futurecast is showing us. the future radar is showing those storms in cumberland county. that's why we sent storm ranger that way because we want to go
4:17 pm
to where the storms are going to be so we can cover you bert and protect you better. by 10:00 tonight we may have some more storms developing to the north and, again, you see that they are kind of scattered around and even into tomorrow morning, but not numerous and by tomorrow afternoon, again, we're seeing a few showers but you're not seeing the yellows and reds that would indicate the heavier rain. look at this. 77 degrees in philadelphia. only 82 in dover. it is incredibly cool compared to yesterday. 12 degrees cooler and 14 degrees cooler in mt. hole than it was at this time yesterday, and it's all those clouds and those clouds help protect a lot of the-year from the severe weather. so for tomorrow, we have a few shower. for wednesday we don't. thursday looks dry for a while and friday up to 90 and saturday we could see a thunderstorm but we've got a fairly dry pattern
4:18 pm
here coming after tomorrow and with the exception of saturday morning. >> well, you heard glen reference the new tool, the nbc 10 first alert weather team has to bring you our viewers more accurate weather information. >> it's called storm radar 10 and nbc's 10 keith jones gives us a lesson on how it works and what it can do. >> what is this thing? it's the first of its kind in the world, not to mention its home slight here in the delaware valley at nbc 10. the definition of ranger, someone in charge, patrolling and protecting the land. in our case pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. storm ranger reaches 75 miles around wherever we take it, filling in gaps in the radar. it's like having another pair of expert eyes on the storm so we can warn you and protect your family even earlier. >> we're able to get a better detailed look at the storm to see if there's hail, heavy rain, if it's severe and we're able to
4:19 pm
see the other radars so we can actually warn people sooner. >> here's how it work. we strapped an exband solid state radar system to a high-tech control room on wheels. it's a million dollar investment in you. storm ranger was designed by world renowned experts and put to the test in tornado alley, one of the most dangerous places for weather in the world. it's credited with saving lives in texas. that radar wasn't even on wheels. this is next generation stuff. >> this is a radar that dewith move wherever we want. >> like your neighborhood and to the biflgt events, reinforcing our first alert neighborhood weather commitment. nbc 10's storm ranger, the first in our area, the first in america, the first in the world. >> get a better view that have storm so now we're filling in those gaps the stationary radar is going to miss. >> reporter: keith jones, nbc 10
4:20 pm
news. >> i know the weather team is excited to have this new tool. >> i never thought i'd see the day where a local tv station could have a mobile doppler radar. this is a dual polarization, the latest technology, too. that we can move around the area. this is used for research in oklahoma so they have tested it. they know that it's accurate and by going to where the storm is we can get so much more detail. like i said, if there's a hurricane at the coastline, we send it down towards the shore. it can withstand hurricane force winds. >> really? >> that's a big heavy truck. let me tell you. >> yeah. >> it's really amazing, i'm -- it's -- it's -- it's like a christmas gift. >> when do we get our own private tour? you going to show us. >> but the thing is these types of radars, it helps us warn people, not only warning, but fewer false alarms. >> yeah. >> because of the tornado
4:21 pm
spinning up there and not reaching the ground. it's a false alarm. we can tell if it's reaching the ground or not, because we're so close to it. >> still more information getting to you guys here at first alert weather. >> all right, glenn. if you want to learn more about storm ranger 10 let nbc 10 or tap the nbc 10 app and hear about the first alert weather team about how it will give you a closer look. fantastic tool. >> two months since the deadly shooting at the pulse nightclub in orlando. >> 49 people lost their attacks and today we learned about new plans at the site of the massacre. the nightclub will reopen while becoming something entirely different. plus this. >> are you married with vehicle code 1379? >> the reason this officer decided to pull people over, not what you would explain. we'll explain. >> what new research has

donald trump: i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldn't lose any voters, okay? and you can tell them to go f--- themselves! you know, you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever... you gotta see this guy. ahh, i don't know what i said, ahh. "i don't remember." he's going like "i don't remember!"

>> traffic stops usually end with maybe a ticket or a warning from police. >> yeah, but people who were pulled over in halifax, virginia, received a cool surprise from officers instead. halifax police chief kevin lamb and officer brian warner pulled over several drivers last week for violating vehicle code 1739. in case you were wondering, that's known as driving on a hot day without ice cream. >> oh, my god. >> oh, my god. >> on behalf of the halifax police department we're making sure everybody is following all the laws today. >> the officers say they were
4:26 pm
just wanting to put a smile on people's faces for the day and mission accomplished. >> she looked so they are vows until she got the ice cream. >> made her day. storms and showers are popping up across the region. first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is keeping tabs on it fours. glenn? >> part of problem is some of the storms are not moving and that creates some very heavy rain, potential downpours and even a chance of localized flash flooding. i'll show you what to expect in your neighborhood next. >> and we are live in new jersey inside of storm ranger 10. coming up i'm going to let you know why this is such a big deal for our community and ground breaking for television as a hole.

4:30 pm
steamy day leading to showers and storms. you see them there on first alert radar as this situation really continues to develop right now. the first storms began developing this afternoon. some of them packing some heavy rain. this is one of those days our neighborhood weather really comes into play. let's get right to first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn? >> some places are getting hammered with heavy showers hand thunderstorms where it's warm and exceptionally humid. we've been talking about our storm ranger 10 here which we have located in new jersey and glassboro. now, this is the part of the conventional radar. you can see this area. that's not really reaching the
4:31 pm
ground. you know how we talk about a lot of times the rain or the snow, not reaching the ground because the radar beam goes up and it's going into the clouds. well, if we get close to the storm we don't have to worry about that, so now here we are with a 30-mile range, for example, and these showers, where's the rain that was farther to the north? it's not there. because it's not there. it's not reaching the ground. we're only showing you stuff that is reaching the ground. that's all we care about, right? show here we are, cumberland county right near cedarville and this area is not moving very much. so we have to keep a close eye on that. that's why we sent storm ranger 10 into this area because we anticipated some heavy rain close by. again, south of cedarville. main street is getting some rain there. the newest tool in the first alert arsenal has hit the road this afternoon. storm ranger 10 out and about and it's a high-tech rolling radar machine and a whole lot
4:32 pm
more. meteorologist crysthri krystal n board to show us what it can do and a lot to play with out there. >> reporter: yeah, glenn, exactly right. super exciting moment for us here at nbc 10. we've been look since i've been here the last month, checking out this vehicle and now we're here. this is the first mobile doppler radar on television anywhere in the world. so this is ground breaking stuff for us. as you can see from behind me, this is our ability to access and operate the radar from right in the truck. this is the internals of how we get that out on to the air for you guys, and the big question when you look at something like this is how do we exactly go from truck to tv? let's go over it. first off we get that team of meteorologists, our first alert weather team, and we gather it. once we've gathered it together we talk about where to send the truck and once we've decided where to send the truck we hit
4:33 pm
the road from. there once we've made it to our destination we can actually shut off the truck and lift the radar dome in just a matter of minutes. in fact, if we can take a look at radar from right now you can see this is what data our truck is gathering as we speak, and this is something that we call duel pole radar. it's the most cutting edge radar out there and it more accurately determines whether we're seeing rain, hail. it can even detect a tornado faster than ever about. our radar has a range of 75 miles in every direction in the truck. the big white thing that you see is the radar dome and inside the truck is the radar shooting out a beam getting the picture of the sky around us at the sky level. does a 360-degree sweep and does it in just ten seconds so we're talking very fast, that this machine can get the data, gather it and send it back to us so that we can have it on air for you, getting that information
4:34 pm
right down at the ground level. coming up at 5:30, we'll talk about why it's so important to have the information at the ground level and why that matters to you as it comes right into your neighborhood. that's coming up in an hour. we're live in glassboro, new jersey, krystal klei, nbc 10. >> all for more accurate forecasting and to learn more, go to nbc10.com or tap the nbc 10 app. you'll hear more about how it will give you a closer look at severe weather. >> from our south jersey bureau, in a few hours a vote to extend unemployment benefits for striking workers at the taj mahal casino in atlantic city. striking works from the trump taj mahal in atlantic city took a bus trip to trenton said and successfully convinced the senate to pass the measure on unemployment benefits. that would allow people on strike to collect unploinlt aft -- unemployment. the workers have been on strike for 30 days now. >> we're fighting this for
4:35 pm
everybody, not just us. we want atlantic city the way it to be, a good job for everybody. >> the bill still needs approval from the assembly. the damage workers say negotiations have been stalled for weeks. there's no denying kids love the trampoline parks. >> but the popularity of the parks isn't the only thing taking a jump. what new research has revealed straight ahead.

we have breaking news out of los angeles right now of a police chase happening. officers are chasing the driver of that black suv weaving in and out of the traffic on the highway. now this began as a call for a reckless driver. we're told this is the second police chase in los angeles so far today. we will continue to monitor the situation. >> the owners of a gay nightclub in orlando, florida, will reopen it as a memorial to the 49 people who died there.
