good evening, everybody, i'm jim rosenfield. william lynn was the first catholic church official charged and convicted in helping to shield child molesters. a judge overturned the ruling last week. three hours ago william lynn walked out of the prison about 20 miles outside scranton. only nbc 10 was there. nbc 10's rosemary connors joins us live from center city now with more on what's next. rosemary? >> reporter: well, jim, here at the district attorney's office in center city, prosecutors over the coming months will be mapping out their case against monsignor william lynn for a second time. now, his new trial is expected to be scheduled for sometime next year. but already, plenty of people are weighing in on the case. and his release from prison earlier today on $250,000 bail. in center city, the rivera

family who brought their son to see the sanctuary thought they had put monsignor william lynn and the case behind him. his release today on bail didn't sit well to them. >> the justice system convicted him once. >> reporter: while some evidence detailing the history of priest abuse and cover-up in the archdiocese may very well not be allowed in court this time around, williams is confident his team will have enough to get a second conviction. >> i firmly believe there will be sufficient evidence, again, to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that monsignor lynn knew that he was taking pedophile priests, moving them to other parishes and, therefore, endangering the welfare of thousands of children in the city of philadelphia. >> i certainly don't condone what he did. i really do think he's the fall guy in all of this. and if we've learned one thing from history, it's just following orders is not a defense. >> reporter: the renewed

attention on the charges against monsignor lynn left many catholics at the basilica today reluctant to talk on camera. there was mixed reaction to lynn's case. >> everybody deserves a second chance. >> it does change the feelings about the charge. >> you feel you can't trust the way you used to be able to trust something. >> reporter: monsignor lynn's trial lasted about three months. however, many tied to the case expect it will be much shorter for the second time. because of the evidence allowed in during the first trial will most likely not be allowed in this time around. it was the basis for his conviction being overturned. rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. decision 2016 now from joking from receiving a purple heart to kicking out a crying baby. donald trump at a rally today raised some eyebrows. >> i thought, man, that was big

stuff. i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. >> trump spoke about receiving a copy of a purple heart from a veteran just before the rally. he seemingly -- his comments come among his ongoing feud with the parents of a muslim-american soldier who was killed in iraq. minutes later, it was a crying baby who seemed to get the best of trump. >> actually, i was only kidding. you can get the baby out of here. that's all right. don't worry. i think she would have believed me that i loved having a baby crying while i'm speaking. that's okay. people don't understand. >> trump originally told the crowd he loved babies when he first heard the crying. democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine later joked, sometimes you wonder who the baby is. one of trump's sons says his father's comments about the cahn

family have been blown out of proportion. a crack in new jersey governor chris christie's support for trump today, he's not backing trump when it comes to the cahn controversy. >> you'll not find me being critical of mr. or mrs. cahn, even if i may disagree with any one particular statement they might make. it's just inappropriate for us in this context to be criticizing them. i'm not going to participate in that. >> democrat hillary clinton had no public events today because she was attending a private funeral. but president obama weighed in on trump's recent comments today. the president said trump's not qualified to become president. and questioned why top republicans keep endorsing him. >> i think the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. i said so last week, and he keeps on proving it. >> new nbc news survey monkey

poll shows clinton getting a boost following the dnc here in philadelphia last week. if the election were held now, 50% of voters say they would choose clinton, 42% said they would pick trump. that's a 7% jump for clinton in the past week. tonight on "nightly news," a closer look how hillary clinton gained in female voters. here at home, the push for pennsylvania is a tale of two campaigns. nbc 10 tracks down how the candidates are gearing up to get out the vote. and nbc 10's mitch blocker is joining us now with that story. mitch? >> reporter: jim, the clinton campaign will open its 33rd office in the state of pennsylvania. the clinton campaign is building a team with hundreds of staffers. the trump campaign is relying on what the republican party already has in place. today volunteers like marlene taylor from the clinton campaign set up to register voters. >> it's really invigorating campaign. >> reporter: they're from one of the five campaign offices in the philly area.

donald trump's office is closed, empty. >> we are stronger together. >> reporter: clinton has a full team in pennsylvania. 300 staff including a state director, a political director and communications team. the state republican party says trump is relying heavily on its staff. >> we have to get out to the people and let them know that you are serious about running for president. >> reporter: today the clinton campaign has 30 open campaign offices statewide. tomorrow they'll open three more, one in allentown, norristown and philadelphia. >> yeah, the infrastructure is there. >> so far trump is also outgunned on the all-important ads by 100-1. the director said the number of offices and staff being little, he said it's about momentum, effort and enthusiasm. >> mitch blocker, thank you. three republican committee members in berks county said they cannot support donald trump as the party's nominee.

they all said they disagree with trump's policies. tonight the chairman says he's always disappointed to see people leave the party. to the weather now. a humid night out there. a few spots seeing showers. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here. glenn, where is the rain falling right now? >> we had almost all of the rain today in berks county. and it continues to move to the -- actually, south-southwest, now into lancaster county. the rest of the area pretty dry. but guess where we sent storm ranger 10. right into berks county. so it could be close to the storm. because other radars one in state college, dover, one in mount holly, it's too far away. we miss a lot of details in the storms in berks county and lehigh valley, and chester county. this storm continues to weaken. it is east of lancaster.

still relatively heavy just west of gap now. it continues to move in through lancaster county, weakening a little bit. the rest of the area is pretty dry. 80 degrees in philadelphia. 80 in wilmington. only in the 70s in much of new jersey with an easterly wind, keeping things cooler. we saw a lot of clouds during the day today. we'll be clearing out tonight. the humidity is going down. that means the temperature's going down. by morning, we're near 60 degrees in the suburbs, and lehigh valley. that means comfort for this time of the year. and we're going to start the day off with a lot of sunshine. we'll see how long this nice weather's going to be lasting in just a few minutes. new at 6:00, a letter of apology tonight from the family of a man accused of throwing a rock at a coatesville police officer. you can see the incident on police dash cam video. this was from last month. eric watson is accused of throwing the rock.

today the police department posted a letter, watson's father wrote to them, apologizing for his son's actions. in admiration, i want to commend the action taken by officer jerrod davis by displaying professionalism beyond the norm in a time madness seems to be the order of the day and the lives of officers in blue are in danger. he went on to say his son's rights were never violated, even after the officer was hurt. eric watson is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. millions of federal dollars are headed to our region to help fight the zika virus. the cdc handed out $16 million to 40 states based on risk. pennsylvania and new jersey each get $560,000. delaware is not in line for funding. the money will help states monitor children affected by zika. a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl after the parents gifted her away, made his first appearance in

feasterville. he fathered two daughters with the underage girl. in court today were also the parents of ten girls found at the man's home. daniel and savilla stoltzfus. the couple is charged with conspiracy to commit sexual assault. all three are in jail until their next court appearance. tonight the search continues for the driver who killed a mother crossing the street in atlanta county last night. aubrey servis was walking to get something to eat at white horse pike. the driver ran a red light, hit her and kept going. it's possibly a 1990s chevy tahoe and suburban that should have front end damage on the driver's side. servis leaves behind two young children. next at 6:00, national night out. what it means for local officers following recent attacks on police. also, smash and grab. thieves rip apart the jewelry case at a local mall.

easton by morning, down to 63 degrees. really nice night. and a great day tomorrow. the humidity is going down, finally. there's that one little cluster of showers. it went right through berks county. that's where we sent storm ranger 10 out today. because you want to get close to the storm. the radar beamed those up in the earth's curvature, shooting up into the clouds, if you've got radar down there, or way out there. so we put the radar right where the storms are. you're within this inner ring. that's within 30 miles. you get the most accurate information there. so we've got the truck close enough to this storm. so we're within 30 miles. and if it had large hail, if it had indication of a tornado, we'd have a better chance of detecting that. now, as we go through the next couple of days, we're going to keep the onshore wind. but it's going to weaken. so those clouds are going to be breaking up. we're going to see more
