nbc 10 is your home for all of the action. the olympic torch arrived in rio by boat this morning ahead of the games. and it will pass through the city end and up at the olympic stadium for the opening ceremony friday night. and the most decorated olympic athlete of all time will now add a unique honor to his outstanding resume. flag bearer. and we get to claim him. u.s. swimmer michael phelps will lead the united states athletes into rio's maracana stadium during friday's opening ceremony. and fashion designer ralph lauren created a special uniform for phelps to wear during the parade of nations. the olympic swimmer is an 18-time gold medallist. good morning. i'm katy zachary. a lot to get to today. it's just after 11:00 on your wednesday. olympic action gets underway actually tonight for the u.s. women's soccer team. south jersey native carly lloyd and her squad, take on new zealand. pamela osborne spoke with some young players who are training

under carly's coach. it sounds like it's a lot of fun out there. she join us live from the practice field in lumberton with more. hi, pamela. >> reporter: katy, i asked the girls who their favorite player was. they all said carly lloyd. they're wrapping up with practice right now. they say they cannot wait to get home, they cannot wait until later this evening to see her play. you could call it a field of dreams. in all actuality, this field helped olympic athlete carly lloyd grow into the super star soccer player she is today. >> i always see her practicing today. and it just makes me want to be a better person. >> reporter: jaylin rizzo and many of her teammates have olympic dreams of their own, but they know it won't come without hard work and training. >> it's always a really good environment for us. because we always get to play against different ages and people. >> reporter: nicollette dedes looks up to carly lloyd. >> she started right here and

just worked hard and she wasn't always perfect and she didn't have the easy ride. she always had a hard trip up to the top. so, she never gave up. >> reporter: it's something dedes says she thinks about at the end of a tough practice or difficult game. these kids have the unique opportunity to train with carly's personal coach. cheering them ton tonight for them will be a treat. >> i can't wait to see her play. i know how hard she's been working. dedes hopes one day this field will be full of kids rooting for her and even some of her teammates at the olympic games. >> i want to represent my country and be the person there that all the kids there are rooting for. i want the u.s. -- i want to like, have the u.s. on my back. >> reporter: and here's the cool thing about all of this. i asked the girls we interviewed who they're going to be watching the game with tonight. a couple of them said they'll be watching it with friends and family, but there was one girl who said that her grandfather actually was a professional soccer player. she's going to be watching the

right here. you can see, we have a lot of emergency vehicles here. this is a tow truck right on the scene over here. you can see we have an ambulance up ahead, some police activity there as well. southbound side is moving by for right now, but slowly. looks like we are also partially blocking a lane on the southbound side. maybe your best bet is to split off before you get to this point, head towards 202 or 322 as part of your alternate or be diverted around. you'll be stuck in that for a little bit because you can see no lanes are getting by. also checking in with 95. earlier we had an accident scene around allegheny, headed southbound into the city. we still see some small delays because of that. we had huge delays and backups earlier, backing up several miles, and an 88-minute drive time there. now we're at 26 minutes, so we're climbing back down, only about 10 minutes extra to your morning commute. heading into center city southbound, katy. >> all right. jessica, thanks for that. a philadelphia police officer is being hailed a hero after running up to a burning car and pulling an unkconscious man to safety.

just after midnight, a car was speeded down broad street in the nicetown section of the city when it jumped the media, crashed into two parked vehicle and caught on fire. an officer happened to be driving down broad street at that exact time. he rushed to the burning car and pulled out the driver before the car went up in flames. the 47-year-old driver had to be revived on the scene. he's now at einstein hospital with a concussion and injuries to his face. worried about losing part of their public safety, which is why people in one delaware county city are sounding off over proposed cuts to the police and fire departments. people who live in chester packed a public hearing at city hall last night. an independent consulting firm recommends the city cut police and firefighting jobs to save the city money. taxpayers smoke out vehemently against the plan, saying the loss of police and firefighters would jeopardize their safety. chester city council has until august 27th to approve the recommended recovery plan, or come up with a plan of its own.

this morning, monsignor willian lynn is waking up a free man. the first u.s. roman catholic priest convicted of helping to shield child molesters in the church was released from prison yesterday. the state's supreme court overturned his conviction, granting him a new trial. the court threw out his conviction, saying the trial judge allowed too many priest abuse victims not tied to his case to testify. so if he's found guilty, how much more time could he face in prison? >> he's served about three years so far, is my understanding. so he could be subjected to a at least another six months, if he was to be given the maximum sentence. lynn was charged with endangering a boy by transferring a suspected predator priest to his parish in the late 1990s. parents accused of gifting their daughter to a man who helped them financially will go to trial. daniel and savilla were in court

yesterday. the bucks county couple is accused of giving their 14-year-old daughter to lee kaplan, who you see there. investigators say kaplan fathered two children with the victim, who is now 18 years old. she testified in court yesterday that she cares for kaplan. nbc 10 spoke exclusively to the assistant district attorney about the victim's reaction. >> i mean, every victim acts differently. every victim experiences things differently. so i don't think that it's atypical or typical. >> yesterday, the girl's parents were ordered to stand trial for child endangerment. kaplan will stand trial for sexual assault. it's 11:08. and as far as summer days go, this is a really nice one. it's looking spectacular outside, as we take a live look at citizens bank park in south philadelphia. you will find plenty of sunshine, low humidity, all making for a very comfortable august day. and it's going to be a great

skies tonight. temperature, 70 by 10:00, and the suburbs, even into the 60s in the lehigh valley. and when you get temperatures in the 60s, by 10:00 at night, in august, it takes some pretty low humidity for that to happen. we'll see how long this spectacular weather is going to last in just a few minutes. happening today, septa will hold a news conference to give an update on efforts to fix a defect with those silver liner rail cars that were taken out of service weeks ago. officials are expected to give a new timeline for returning the 120 cars to service on the regional rail lines. also taking place today, vice president joe biden will visit philadelphia to receive an honor from a local organization. the world affairs council of philadelphia will present the vice president with their annual atlas award tonight in center city. the council is honoring mr. biden for his leadership of the president's cancer research

dubai international airport after a plane crash landed and burst into flames. this is an update on breaking news we first told you about on nbc 10 news this morning. here's cell phone video that shows smoke billowing from the tarmac. the emirates airline flight coming from india had nearly 300 passengers and crew onboard. an aviation industry source tells nbc news wind shear may have caused a last-second aborted landing. everyone did escape safely, including six americans, before the boeing 777 was engulfed in a fireball. turning now to decision 2016. and it's another war of words with donald trump. this time involving the man he wants to replace in the white house. president obama labeled trump "woefully unprepared for the oval office," and now sources tell nbc news that several top republicans are talking about an intervention with the republican presidential candidate. nbc's hallie jackson has the latest.

>> i think the republican nominee is unfit. unfit to serve as president. >> reporter: president obama like we've never heard him. >> the fact that he doesn't appear to have basic knowledge around critical issues means that he's woefully unprepared. to do this job. mitt romney and john mccain were wrong on certain policy issues, but i never thought that they couldn't do the job. there has to come a point at which you say, somebody who makes those kinds of statements doesn't have the judgment, the temperament, the understanding to occupy the most powerful position in the world. >> reporter: trump firing back tuesday night. >> i think he's the worst president, maybe, in the history of our country. >> reporter: that back and forth coming as the gop's civil war seems to be back, too. paul ryan's office saying he never asked for donald trump's

endorsement. trump, stunningly, not giving him one. i'm not quite there yet, he tells "the washington post." if that sounds familiar, it should. >> i'm not there right now. >> reporter: it's what ryan said about trump back in may, stoking speculation now of possible payback after it took ryan weeks to endorse trump. ryan's office says he's confident, regardless, in a victory in his re-election bid tuesday. but the house speaker is not the only republican heavyweight trump's not sure he'll support. senator john mccain has his own tough fight coming up in arizona. >> i'm only thinking about it. i mean, i've, you know, never been a big fan of john mccain. and i just hate the way our veterans have been treated by john and other people. >> reporter: that coming just a day after mccain criticized trump for his comments about two gold star parents, khizr khan, the father of a fallen soldier, again taking aim overnight, this time for this moment at a virginia rally. >> he handed me his purple

apparent lack of neutrality in the primary race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton and vice president joe biden will be back on the campaign trail in pennsylvania later this month. this time they will pay a visit to biden's birthplace, scranton. the stop is at riverfront sports and will be open to the public. and count on nbc 10 for complete coverage of decision 2016. you can fact check the candidates and track all of the political headlines on the nbc 10 app. i've got a lot of sunshine out there and the temperatures are really not going up a whole lot. we have a cooler and more comfortable air mass that has moved in. temperatures in the mid-70s, we've got sunshine across much of the area, in the p.a. suburbs. we have temperatures, some places, not even into the

mid-70s. 74 at kenneth square and chad's ford. a little warmer at st. david's, it's 79 degrees. we don't have any of the areas that have hit 80 yet. only 75 in ft. washington and gladwyne, 73 degrees in b bedminister. and temperatures barely getting above 80 in some of those places. we're barely seeing any clouds across the area. you can see showers in west virginia, not really moving very much. and we don't have much in the way of any kind of weather systems approaching us. so we have sunshine, comfortable conditions that are going to last through the afternoon. we've got no clouds. tonight, no clouds to speak of. certainly no rain. maybe a few clouds tomorrow, but it's still beautiful day, with low humidity, and there's thursday at 10:00.

what about as we head toward the weekend? are we going to be able to keep this kind of weather pattern? well, not totally. as we go into friday, we're going to be seeing some showers develop in western pennsylvania, start to approach. there's 5:00 friday. so there's nothing that's going to be falling from the sky on friday. but the humidity will be up. temperatures are going to be up. and the chance of showers starts to pick up as we go into saturday morning. but we're still not real impressed with the amount of moisture that is potentially threatening us for saturday. and that is really the only threat for the entire week to ten days. look at what we expect tomorrow. sunshine all day, not much wind. temperatures getting into the low 80s. that is nice. and these are the feels-like temperatures, generally lower than the actual temperature, because the humidity is so low. for washington, only feeling

like 81. allentown, 82. millville, 82. hamilton township, 81. stone harbor, feeling like 80 degrees. so we really do have some beautiful weather here. now, by saturday, just about anyplace we could see a shower or a thunderstorm. don't cancel any plans, though. most of the day is dry. and it's hot. sunday, the comfort returns. we've got some beautiful weather on the way. all the way through friday. then we have potential thunderstorms on saturday, and then look what happens. now it's dry for another five, six days, as temperatures go back up, starting next tuesday. >> glenn, thank you for that. women, have you had your tonsils taken out or your appendix removed? the surprising new findings between the links between those surgical procedures and your fertility. we'll have that, coming up.

a little bit warmer in philadelphia itself. that philadelphia is out at the airport. we'll see about the other ones in chestnut hills, 76. western areas, 79, along with chase. we are getting close to the 80-degree mark, but the humidity is very low for this time of the year. now, we don't have any significant cloud cover, anywhere in the area. we don't have any that is approaching. there are some showers in virginia and west virginia, but they're not moving this way. and they're not going to be moving this way. and so, as we go through the afternoon, we're into the low to mid-80s. low humidity, making it feel, if anything, a little bit cooler than that. and in the suburbs, temperatures barely getting up to 80, by 10:00 tonight, we're talking about the lehigh valley getting down into the upper 60s. by tomorrow morning, probably

low 60s, which is unusually comfortable for this time of the year, with sunshine everywhere. we'll see how long this incredible stretch lasts with the rest your forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. it looks like gorgeous sunrise in northern california, but it's really a massive wildfire that's already consumed about 1,700 acres of dry land. the fire started just yesterday afternoon, near nassau. despite the efforts of about 500 firefighters, they have not been able to get any control of the blaze. at least three dozen homes and nearby campgrounds have been evacuated. a toast to the 50th anniversary of the relationship between the united states and singapore. president obama and the first lady hosted a state dinner at the white house last night for the prime minister of singapore. president obama raised his glass to the pursuit of a peaceful and positive asia, but prime minister li's toast was focused on winning a few laughs from the dinner table.

the wheel while on the road. researchers found nearly three quarters of teen admit to having their phones nearby, while they're driving alone. and about two this three teens admits to using apps while they're driving, even though this study found nearly all of the teens surveyed admit using any app is dangerous. more than a quarter of the teens in this study say they text and drive, and nearly half admit they text to get directions. young girls who have surgery to remove their appendix or their tonsils may increase their chance of getting pregnant later in life. researchers in the uk analyzed the medical records of thousands of women who had one of the surgical procedures or both. the pregnancy rates of that group were nearly ten points higher than a group of the same-aged women who had not undergone either surgery. a prime-time absolute to the singing legend for his 90th birthday. nbc is celebrating tony bennett,

welcome back. on the road to rio now. most athletes are in the brazilian city and there are now just two days to go until the start of the 2016 olympic games. nbc 10 is your home for all of the action. olympic officials are making sure the venues are ready with new security measures in place. and team usa is getting its first taste of the olympic village in rio. nbc's peter alexander reports. >> reporter: here in rio, security forces now fortifying

the city's two most iconic sites, christ the redeemer and sugarloaf mountain. for the first time deploying metal detectors to search visitors. the brazilian military taking charge, promising a safe olympic games. just hours after touching down with his teammate, michael phelps, the most decorated olympian ever, heading into what he says will be his last olympics, taking his first laps at the aquatic center. barely 48 hours to the opening ceremony, the teams are settling into the athlete's village. >> whether you're, you know, a fencer or you're michael phelps, you want to be in the village. the best place to be and i wouldn't -- i mean, i think that's part of the olympic experience. >> reporter: nbc news invited inside. >> no matter what country you're from or what sport you do, everybody's here for that common denominator, which is sporting. >> reporter: making themselves at home, the new fierce five, decked out in matching t-shirts and playing around at practice. this athlete's village is really a small city. 31 brand-new buildings, 18,000

we've got a picture-perfect start to the day and for the rest of the week, without any significant cloud cover, as we go into thursday, there's the futurecast, perhaps a few little clouds at the shore. thursday afternoon, you don't see any showers on the map. now, just want to show you that it's working. the computer is working, there's just not going to be any rain around. there's friday at 6:00. now we're getting some rain into central pennsylvania, but it's not here by -- even by friday night. and some of the latest computer models suggest that what comes in on saturday isn't all that impressive, either. like, not everybody's going to get rained on, on saturday. so this is the predicted high temperature, along with the predicted highest feels-like temperature, which is actually lower in some places, because the humidity is so low. like in somerton.

but washington, 85 degrees, feels like 81. this is tomorrow when the humidity is so low. stone harbor, other places at the shore feeling a little bit warmer because the humidity is generally a little bit higher at the shore and in delaware than other places. it will weekend itself, sunday certainly looks to be a beautiful day. warm temperatures, but low humidity. saturday, it's not a washout. not everybody's getting rain. there's a chance of a thunderstorm and it looks like it's going to be hot. and humid. that's the main difference between saturday and sunday. so friday, the humidity starts going up. saturday, it's humid with a chance of a thunderstorm. sunday is beautiful, along with monday. and then we start heating up, as
