what did you hear? >> explosion. >> we begin with a chaotic scene at philadelphia's criminal justice center today. what that woman heard was the sound of something going seriously wrong inside an elevator shaft. a sheriff's deputy is in critical condition right now, and the building's been emptied out as investigators try to figure out exactly what happened. we'll have more to report on this in just a few minutes. good afternoon. i'm jim rosenfield. >> i'm rosemary connors. >> reporter: i'm jacqueline london coming to you live from rio de janeiro, brazil. where we are just 24 hours away from the start of opening ceremonies. take a look behind me here in the olympic park. you can see what is getting so much attention. a structure of the olympic rings. the people you see here right now are volunteers. they are employees of this park because this park is not yet open to the public. over the next two and a half weeks, we're going to be your all-access pass to everything

related to the olympics. coming up shortly, we're going to tell you about the security measures that are in place here in rio, and also we're going to take you to the set of the "today" show behind the scenes where i got to go one-on-one with hoda kotb. >> thanks, jacqueline. now, nbc 10 cameras were there when this woman was wheeled out of the criminal justice center after crews rescued her from an elevator. her elevator was hit by falling debris from another elevator. crews were called there around 10:30 this morning after reports of people being trapped in the elevators. the reports came pouring in. >> we heard a loud boom and a loud commotion. the next thing you know the fire alarm sounded and we evacuated. >> reporter: fire rescue crews rushed in.

two people, a sergeant with the philadelphia sheriff's office, and a court employee were in two separate staff elevators before 10 sch 10:30 this morning when the elevator failed. >> i have no idea. >> excuse me. >> what did you see or hear? >> explosion. >> reporter: investigators quickly ruled out any kind of threat to the criminal justice center. according to the mayor's office it all started with the elevator that the sheriff sergeant was riding in. it went through the ceiling of the elevator shaft on the building's pent house level. >> there is evidence of structural failure. debris from that failure fell down the common shaft and hit the second elevator. >> reporter: the second elevator which the court employee was riding in. all of the elevators passed inspection in june, but that's little consolation to the witnesses who are still shaken by what they heard. >> it sounded like a really,

really loud thud. it hit really, really hard. >> thank god there was not more people on the elevator. because it could have been worse than what it is. >> we caught up with the sheriff a short time ago to get an update on the injured sergeant. take a listen. >> right now, the sheriff deputy, he's in pretty bad shape. several broken bones in his back. and he's on his way to surgery. >> sergeant paul owens has been with the sheriff's office for more than 20 years. the woman who went to the hospital, the court employee, she's already been released. she has been identified as beverly smith. at the time of the elevator plunge, nbc 10 crews were at the courthouse covering a hearing for monsignor william lynn. today a judge set his retrial date for may 1st. this is video of lynn arriving at court today in the blue polo there. he's the first u.s. roman catholic priest put on trial for helping to shield child

molesters in the church. prosecutors are expecting the trial to last about a month. the countdown to rio is nearing its home stretch. we're just one day away from the start of the 2016 olympics in brazil. the opening ceremony is set for tomorrow night. nbc 10 is the only place to see all the action. the olympic flame continued its journey through rio today. brazilian surfer suza carried the torch as he surfed the rio coast. it makes its way to the site of the opening ceremony tomorrow evening. now, authorities are ramping up security around rio, with about 85,000 security officers deployed around the city. and barricades now line the streets along copacabana beach. we were out at ipanima and
