thought it was an explosion. ready in rio. less than 24 hours away from the opening ceremony, nbc 10 is live in rio with olympic access you can't get anywhere else. ♪ tonight, all eyes on rio, as the city hosts the first summer games in south america. as the olympic torch moves one step closer to the calderon, security remains tight with the opening ceremony less than a day away. good evening. i'm jacquelyn london live from rio de janeiro, brazil, we are less than 24 hours away in the official start of the olympic games 2016. more than 500 team usa athletes are here in rio tonight. many of them from our area, and they are ready to compete. coming up in a few minutes, i'll introduce you to one local athlete making history at these

games. but first, let's hand it back to the nbc 10 studio with jim rosenfield. >> we'll see you soon. new at 11:00, take a look at this photo that has hope omeown on edge. an arrow shot into a house near where a toddler sleeps. they want to know who did it. >> reporter: it's not something you expect to see in your window, an arrow lodged in the glass of a second-floor room. the homeowner's son posted these photos on a facebook forum, saying the arrow came close to the room where his child takes naps. we showed the photos to neighbors. >> i'm grateful no one was hurt, especially children. >> reporter: mary casper lives a street over. philadelphia police say someone shot an arrow into a house on

scotia street yesterday but are unsure what time it happened. >> i don't know why someone would be shooting a bow and arrow, there's no hunting. >> it makes me feel unsafe in a neighborhood that's always been a very quiet neighborhood. >> reporter: neighbors we spoke to say this news is quite unusual. police are working to find out where the arrow came from and if it was accidental. >> it makes me wonder who, who would do that. >> our house is the closest house, i would think, you know, the way that the arrow was shot, and it wasn't us. >> brandon hudson reporting there. if you have any information, philadelphia police would like to talk with you. new tonight, we're getting our first look at the sheriff's deputy hurt in a bizarre elevator accident at the criminal justice center in center city. an elevator shot into the air with sergeant paul owens still inside. the force sent debris flying, hurting a woman and setting out a sound witnesses thought was an explosion.

keith jones is joining us live at the hospital with an update on the sergeant tonight. >> reporter: we've learned that this sergeant has made it through surgery successfully. but he's in a medically-induce the coma for the next few days after living what many of us consider to be a worse nightmare scenario. >> an explosion, that's all i can tell you. >> reporter: that's all beverly smith had time to remember after she heard something crash on top of the roof of the elevator. >> a loud explosion. we thought it was an explosion, an earthquake, didn't know what it was. >> reporter: judge, jurors, court employees, all but one philadelphia sheriff's deputy made it out. paul owens was found trapped after the elevator malfunctioned and shot up through the ceiling, tossing him like a projectile near the 13th floor. investigators are still investigating why it happened. >> he's in pretty bad shape. several broken bones in his back. and he's on his way to surgery.

>> reporter: which we've learned was successful. beverly smith was treated and released. >> she was overwhelmed knowing that he had injuries and in tears and understood that her injury was not as bad as his. >> reporter: and, again, sergeant owens is in critical but stable condition here at hahnemann university hospital in that clinically-induced coma. the criminal justice center was closed today. it will also remain closed tomorrow. for now, we're live at the hahnemann university hospital, nbc 10. ♪ >> reporter: here live in rio de janeiro, we can tell you that security is tight, more than than 85,000 security officers deployed. their job to keep the athletes and hundreds of thousands of

fans safe. i am standing in the baja olympic park, giving you an aerial vantage point shows you how vast this area is. and security will be visible through it all. while rio is known for its incredible views, tonight what's most visually stunning here is security. at the foot of christ the redeemer, heavily armed soldiers. even along the sands of copa ca b banna, crews look for threats big and small. after days of protests, few problems in the city of sand and surf. >> just no order at all. >> reporter: fans hoping to get a glimpse of the games, expressing frustration after standing in line for hours to get tickets. >> a nice gentleman stopped us and said you realize you have four hours' waiting time before you get your tickets. >> reporter: one of the athletes to watch tomorrow, michael phelps. the most decorated olympian in history will carry the flag

during the ceremony. >> i'm having fun again, and this is something that i haven't had in a really long time. >> reporter: and new tonight, a split decision for many russian athletes, appeal being a ban after a wide-spread doping scandal. today about 270 of them were cleared to kecompete. we will put a spotlight a little later on a local athlete, one to meet and one to watch. but right now we'll send it back to jim rosenfield. >> one of so many to watch. we'll check back with you in a bit. in the meantime, to the latest on decision 2016. hillary clinton is extending her lead over donald trump, in a new nationwide poll out tonight, the wall street journal poll shows her with a 9 point lead, it's

almost double the 5-point edge he had before the conventions. and an even larger lead in pa. trump campaigned in maine where he went after his political riv rival. >> i sort of missed my protesters, you know? and we don't get them from hillary, because there's no, you know, the bernie people had spirit. we don't get them from hillary because they don't care, they don't care. >> trump will join running mate mike pence for rallies in iowa and wisconsin tomorrow. meantime some local republican leaders are turning away from trump. he tell nbc 10 they refuse to be associated with the republican nominee. >> i feel like millions of americans right now aren't happy with the choices at the top of the ticket. but there's always the option to write someone in. >> as a party leader, i don't want to do anything that would help him in any way or be

associated with him. >> williamson was one of the people to quit the committee this week. but the republican party says they will work to elect trump. senator cory booker was back in his home state tonight and took part in a panel discussion on criminal justice reform in camden. >> we need to have a criminal justice system that's about restorative justice and not retribution, a disproportion of punishment. there are a lot of things we're working on to make that happen. and it's a battle that i'm in that we're going to fight and we're going to win. >> the senator delivered a speech that got positive reviews at the dnc last night, but he down-played any presidential ambitions and said he's focussed on getting hillary clinton elected. an arrest warrant has been issued for fethullah gulen's arrest. the turkish government claims he was behind the failed coup that

left more than 270 people dead last month. he has been living in exile in monroe county for years and is a long-time critic of the turkish government. he has denied being involved in the coup and issued this statement. it is well documented that the turkish court system is without judicial independence, so this is another sign of the president's drive away from democracy. we're going back live to rio where one local athlete is about set to make olympic history. jacquelyn? >> reporter: that's right. she'll be rowing her way into the history books after years of practice on the schuylkill. i'll explain live from rio, coming up. and we have more heat and humidity coming up in the forecast for the weekend. plus thunderstorms. we'll show you the timing and what you can expect, coming up

the way it should have been funded. they have made a promise, they've made a commitment, and they need to stick to it. george zimmerman's back in the headlines tonight after he claims he was punched in the face at a florida restaurant. it happened over the weekend while he was explaining that he shot trayvon martin in self-defense, but several witnesses claim he had been bragging about the shooting. back in 2012, zimmerman shot and killed the 17-year-old while on neighborhood watch. he was acquitted of second degree murder charges. two people were arrested today for this chaos inside a wa wa. he was kicking and hitting them. this same group vandalized the same wa wa the day before.

in montgomery county, a former volunteer firefighter has pleaded guilty to holding firefighters hostage. he held them at gun point and feared a shot into the wall. he had been let go from the company the night before the incident. that sentencing date will be scheduled after jordan goes through several evaluations. from our jersey shore bureau, margate police connecting with the community they serve by hosting law day behind the marr gate library. there was music and dancing, too. welcome back to rio de janeiro, brazil, where we are counting down for the opening ceremony of the 2016 olympic summer games. one of the athletes who lives in philadelphia and will be walking in the opening ceremony won't be

wearing red, white and blue. her name is shareca knew coe gu. and she competes for nigeria but trained on the schuylkill river. >> it's beautiful, like the water's perfectly flat. >> reporter: born and raised in philadelphia, shareca started rowing ten years ago at the age of 14 at mt. st. joseph academy. before she goes off to medical school, she'll go to rio. >> keep it steady through the middle of the stroke. >> if you would have told me in 2006 that i'd be here right now on this same body of water, i would not have believed you. >> reporter: the 24 rear oyear rowing right into the history books as the first nigerian to

ever row for the olympic games. an honor for her family and her country. >> there's so many opportunities that rowing has given to me, so i hope, you know, i can do the same for other people. >> reporter: rowers in the olympics should be focussed solely on the sport and the stroke. unfortunately, now, there's so much attention now, on what they're rowing on, the polluted waters of rio. >> you can only do your best. so i'm not going to be thinking about oh, this water, i hope it doesn't get in my mouth during a race, but, you know, just try not to get sick. >> reporter: sher >> reporter: shareca will be wearing an anti-microbial suit. but her frame will also be covered in nerves. >> i'm going to tear up and my stomach in butter flies. but i know it's going to happen. i have to own it, get to the

starting lean a ing line, relaxt i know to do. there's a huge number of olympians. i'm happy to be part of the tradition, part of the schuylkill family. >> reporter: and shareca says those nerves that she's grown so accustomed to, she knows will dissolve once she gets to the starting line. of course the cleanliness of the water and concerns of pollution are dominating the headlines here, but many of these athletes say they have put in so many years and hours of training that they are not going to let the fears get in the way of what they have trained their entire lives for. we know that they are waring those anti-microbial suits, and s shareca and many of the other athletes say they're not going to be cognizant of touching the

thunderstorms. across the area, skies are dark, but tomorrow morning, 67 for the philadelphia region. even parts of delaware the mid to low 60s. a comfortable start in the morning, but through the afternoon, the heat and humidity will be going up. especially as we go through the weekend. take a look at our humidity chart as we compare it each day. tomorrow it will be getting a little more humid in the afternoon. saturday, is what we expect it to get very humid. we'll have more of a south wind and thunderstorms. you'll notice it. by sunday, the humidity drops off. so by tuesday we gestart to see the humidity getting higher again. it will be going up and down here over the next several days. saturday showers and storms move in, some parts of the area could see them in the morning, most of us in the afternoon. then we go into next week.

and we're looking at those 90s returning for several days in a row. we could be talking about another heat wave in the forecast. as we go into your friday, we'll be staying dry, clouds throughout parts of the day, but overall, the rain's going to hold off until saturday. now we're going into saturday morning. i think we'll be waking up with more cloud cover around. there's a chance in the poconos and lehigh valley. most of the area will be seeing it by the afternoon. maybe around 2:00 p.m. through the philadelphia area and after 2:00 p.m. moving to the shore and the delaware beaches. then saturday evening clearing out. and by sunday and sunday afternoon, really nice day. more sunshine. humidity will be lower. taking a look at your neighborhood temperatures. allentown, 84 degrees. most of the area coming in in the mid to low 80s. now we go across your weekend. saturday, mostly the low 90s. scattered thunderstorms mostly
