11:00 am
breaking news right now. johnny dougherty investigated. we're live as the fbi are investigating several locations connected to the boss of the electrician's union. all eyes on rio with the opening ceremony for the 2016 olympics just hours away. and don't take the plunge. the event philadelphia officials don't want you to be a part of. we begin with this breaking news. the fbi confirms it has investigators at several locations connected to union leader john dougherty. the fbi tells us it's part of an ongoing investigation. nbc 10 cameras got this video of dougherty outside of his south philadelphia home just a short time ago.
11:01 am
at least three locations connected to dougherty were raided this morning. dougherty's home and pub in south philadelphia and union headquarters of the international brotherhood of electrical workers in spring garden. sky force 10 is live over philadelphia city hall, where fbi is also raiding the offices of city council -- -- northeast philadelphia district office. we have a lot to cover and we have a lot of reporters working on this. nbc 10 live team coverage of these raids. we begin with nbc 10's rosemary connors. she is live outside dougherty's home in south philadelphia. rosemary, what are you seeing there? >> reporter: tracy, all morning long, investigators have been inside two homes here on the 1900 block east moinminhsa evidence. the brown brick home belongs to john dougherty. and the home next door, that belongs to a family member of john dougherty. investigators also inside there.
11:02 am
oftentimes in these kind of fbi raids, you will see investigators bringing bags of evidence outside. that has yet to happen in this case. in fact, very little movement in and out of the homes, at least so far as we've seen this morning. state troopers have been positioned outside. right here on the side block, throughout the morning. in the meantime, johnny dougherty is positioned a little bit further up the block. he's with his lawyer and with his friends and family. john dougherty, of course, better known as johnny doc, the well-known business leader of the electrical union in philadelphia. all he would tell me off-camera is that nothing has changed inside the home since the last time it was raided by the fbi about ten years ago. now, that raid was reportedly related to a tax fraud investigation involving a local electrical contractor. no word yet from the fbi on the specifics of this case, but we do know that dougherty has been under investigation for getting into a fistfight earlier this year with a non-union contractor, working on a job site in south philadelphia.
11:03 am
now, ultimately, that case was referred to the state attorney general's office. it was referred from the district attorney's office, because of potential conflicts. it's unclear exactly what the status of that case is right now. we haven't had any new developments from the ag's office. unclear if other authorities are now investigating, and if that may be related to this raid. we're going to continue to stay out here throughout the morning. we will have an update at 11:30. reporting live in south philly, i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. >> a lot of questions still left to answer. thanks, rosemary. also connected to the dougherty raid is a raid right now at philadelphia city hall. sky force 10 is live over city hall. the fbi is inside the offices of city councilman bobby keenan. we're told the fbi has been at heenan's fourth floor office since 6:00 this morning. according to security officials, councilman heenan has been to the office today. the fbi tells nbc 10 news that it also has investigators at heenan's northeast philadelphia district office. our live team coverage continues now.
11:04 am
nbc 10's matt delucia is live at ibew headquarters in spring garden. what's happening there, matt? >> reporter: and similar to what rosemary was describing over at john dougherty's home, not much in the form of movement here at this office. i'm going to step out of the way. you can see that there is some crime scene tape and a couple of state troopers that are stationed here by the entrances. really not letting anybody inside or out. one union member tried to get in earlier, but was turned away. i also noticed some plain clothed fbi agents go in and out. and just within the past five minutes, we noticed a black suv pull into the parking lot. that could be fbi, again, not confirmed at this point. no one here is talking about the specifics of this investigation. sky force 10 was over the same spot where we are right now. from above you can see the entire area is cordoned off. no workers or union members going in or out. also, we haven't seen items come out, like computers or files. some who have driven by or
11:05 am
walked by have asked what was going on. but all of this is happening as another location connected to john dougherty is being raided, doc's union pub on the 1800 block of south second street. again, the fbi confirms they are investigating this spat wob but not much activity or movement beyond that. as we take another live look here in the spring garden neighborhood, outside the local 98 offices, just some police and crime tape. and some philly police officers, looks like they're here on bicycles to assist. but mostly just the state police station at the doorways here. my colleague, george spencer, he's on the other side here, also working to get more information. but for now, no access for anyone at the offices and also the union hall, it's just on the other side of this building. no one's being allowed in there either. for now we're live in spring garden, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. >> matt, thanks for that. now let's give you a little bit of background. rose maimary mentioned this. in 2006, the fbi searched his
11:06 am
home as part of an investigation into an electrical contractor. an unsealed affidavit reveals that the fbi believe he received more than $300,000 worth of free renovations to his home. and a that he filed false income tax returns. dougherty was never charged in that case. and earlier this year, the fbi and the pennsylvania attorney general's office began investigating a street fight between johnny doc and a non-union contractor. surveillance video from january appears to show dougherty and joshua kesey walking on north third street. kesey's lawyer says his client was beat up because he's not in the union and was working at a construction site. dougherty claims he acted in self-defense. stay with nbc 10 and the nbc 10 app as we work to uncover more details about the raids underway this morning and the investigation into john dougherty. well, the day is finally here. we have reached the final hours in our countdown to the start of the 2016 summer olympics in rio. all eyes will be on brazil

this morning? >> reporter: i did, tracy. within the past 15 minutes, we watched federal investigators come out of this home here. this home belonging to family members of john dougherty. and as you can see in this new video, they brought out with them about three boxes of evidence, also a computer. investigators here on scene are being very tight-lipped about what they've been looking for inside these homes, what kind of evidence they're trying to gather, and also, what the nature of this investigation is. all we're being told is that this is part of an ongoing investigation. after investigators removed that evidence, those three boxes of evidence and the computer, they closed up the house, allowed the family to go back inside, and then they went next door to john dougherty's house. they went inside and brought with them some folded up cardboard boxes, presumably to bring out more evidence, if they find anything and need to bring it out. they have yet to come outside. as i mentioned earlier, as we saw at the top of the hour, john dougherty, better known as johnny doc, is a well-known

the more you're going to go over the storm. you're going to be getting the top of the storm. well, if you're looking for a tornado, the tornado's right at the bottom. >> reporter: bottom line, the closer we can get the radar to the storm, the lower angle of the beam, the more information we can get about a storm. >> and the more information we can get you, and the closer we can get you to this, and the safer you'll be, too. >> reporter: this radar on wheels is ultimately for your safety. when storms hit, general warning information to you and your family is good, but -- >> the more specific we can get about it, the more likely people are to take action. >> now, if you want to take a closer look inside storm ranger 10 and learn about its forecasting capabilities and how it gathers all the information for you and your family, go to nbc10.com or tap the free nbc 10 app. >> no storms to track today. it's sunshine. look at north wildwood new jersey. bright sunshine and a quick warm-up. but storms will be arriving over the weekend. your neighborhood forecast, just ahead. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message.

only on nbc 10. fans of the wayans brothers got to know marlon wayans in the early '90s in the popular tv show "in livie ing color." he went on to star in "the scary movie" franchise and more recently, "50 shades of black." >> to what do you own your success? >> i have a natural instinct for what makes a person tick. >> hanna. >> christian. >> ow, that hurts! >> all right. this movie, of course, spoofing "50 shades of gray." and you can catch more of marlon's antics on stage this weekend in philadelphia. and we're thrilled to welcome you back to the show. and, you know, you were just here a couple of years ago. you've been pretty busy since. tell us what you've been up to. >> most recently this morning, i've just been trying to stay warm inside this cold-behind
11:47 am
studio. dear people at this station, this weather is not brother friendly. it is cold, sister skin is cold. she's got the little chicken bumps. we cold in here. can you turn the thermostat to brothers? thank you. but other than that, i've been -- i'm traveling and doing stand-up and make people laugh. and that warms my heart and warms the planet. i'm the cause of global warming. >> that's right. by the way, i think they keep it chilly in here so we'll be a little bit more productive. >> really? so they gonna freeze you out? >> that's my theory. i don't know. it's just a theory. >> i think they want to see us ashy and laugh in the booth. look at how ashy they are! see her feet! and all i see on him is ashy. >> okay. as many people know, you were the youngest of ten children. why don't you tell us, did that influence the jokes that you tell or do you draw from those real-life experiences of having a big family? >> i think sometimes i draw from those experiences. but the reality is, i draw from
11:48 am
everyday life. and you know, that comes from being a brother, being a son, being a -- being a father. being an american citizen. you know, being, you know, whatever you are, you pull and draw from that and that's where your comedy comes from. so for me, the more that happens in the world that's bad, it's good for comedy, because i go in there and say, what's funny about this? >> and speaking of that, you have no problem poking fun at stereotypes. and in this political campaign, there's been a lot of talk about things being too politically correct. so what do you think about that? >> i'm not into the whole politically correct thing. i think people -- you know, first amendment is freedom of speech. i think we're allowed to feel and allow to say things. don't say stupid stuff. don't rock a trump, but you know, you're allowed to have an opinion about things. and for me, i like speaking my mind. and people that come to my show, they like -- sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree. but at the end of the day,
11:49 am
you're going to laugh and appreciate it because it comes from often biased perspective. >> and you've already hosted a show on nbc -- >> yeah, you can't see. so you're also -- >> i'm trying, i'm trying. >> you hosted -- >> there's a lot of information on this paper, but you have another show coming up, why don't you tell us about that? >> yeah, i did, on nbc, it was kind of like a game show/reality thing. this one is a scripted sitcom based on my life. it's called marlon and it's made from my life, as a divorced inappropriate dad. and my kids, we did this thing for father's day last year for "people" magazine. and they asked, what's one word to describe your father. and i thought they were going to say loving or sweet or kind. they look at each other, and they go, inappropriate. and i was like, okay. and you know, which i am. so, i'm the biggest kid in the house, always. >> so were they at that stage where they're embarrassed of you, or do they think you're
11:50 am
just really funny and want you to come to everything they do? >> they thought i was really funny when they were 2 and 4. but now they're 14 and 16, they're so embarrassed. and the more embarrassed they are, the more i want to hang out with them. my son thinks i'm funny. my daughter is like, people in the school are like, your brother is so cool. and she's like, he's not my brother, he's my dad. i'm like, don't hate, because black don't crack. you can catch more of marlon's antics this weekend. he'll be live at punch line philly, two shows, one at 7:30 and another at 9:45. and tomorrow night he has shows at 7:00 and 9:15. punch line philly is located, by the way, 33 east laurel street in fishtown. that's in philly. for more information, head on over to nbc10.com or check it out on the nbc 10 app. >> now, please get this black girl some heat. >> thank you so much for joining us and thank you for advocating

for heat. >> i got you, baby girl. i got you. >> thank you. now for weather. >> you want heat, well, nbc 10 responds with heat for tomorrow. for today, it's getting warm outside. the temperatures are climbing into the upper 80s today for philadelphia. the humidity is still nice in check. warm summer day, yes. but hot and humid conditions, no. the clouds increasing later today. it's this evening that we'll see the humidity start to move in. humidity's on the way, especially for tomorrow. for now, 70s and low 80s. 79 degrees in exton. already 81 degrees in north wales and ft. washington is 80 degrees this morning. and we are going to warm into the 80s for philadelphia. 82 degrees at 6:00. clouds starting to move in this evening. that's when you'll start to feel more of the humidity. the suburbs, low 80s during the day, 74 degrees later this evening. and dry during the evening hours, for the lehigh valley, and there'll be a few scattered clouds this afternoon. no sign of any showers in the
11:52 am
lehigh valley, not today. delaware, 80s this afternoon. cooling down to 75 degrees by 10:00 tonight, with partly cloudy skies. sunshine this afternoon, for new jersey and the shore, a beautiful day all around. it's tomorrow that will have umbrellas going up. you can see we're nice and clear of any rain for today. but the system we're watching is this line that's steadily moving our way. it doesn't look like much. there have been some storms in northern missouri. follow that to the north, you can see wet weather in canada. by the time it noouf moves into our area, we'll likely see showers and thunderstorms. this evening, you'll start to see some of those clouds we saw in that forecast. the neighborhood forecast has clouds increasing first in the suburbs, and the lehigh valley, but also in delaware and mostly cloudy skies to start with tomorrow morning. and we'll be seeing some filtered sunshine tomorrow. and it's going to be a hot and humid day today. much steamier tomorrow than today. it's going to feel like it's close to 100 degrees. and during the afternoon, this
11:53 am
is when we'll see some showers and thunderstorms, that's 2:30 in the afternoon. that line of storms will move past philadelphia into delaware and south jersey. and by later in the afternoon, at 5:00, that's when you can expect to see some downpours, heavy showers and thunderstorms, possibly some strong wind gusts, as well. but that cold front that's going to produce those storms is on the move. so it's going to clear the area, which means the second half of the weekend is going to be very nice. today, sunshine, 87 degrees this afternoon. just a few clouds at times. nothing but fair weather clouds today. but steamier tomorrow, more of the humidity that comes in overnight will prevent the temperatures from cooling into the 60s like they did this morning, and it's going to be a hot and humid afternoon. those storms roll through, then the temperatures will be dropping. 88 degrees sunday afternoon with plenty of sunshine and the humidity coming down during the day on sunday. which means we're back into the 60s monday morning and again on tuesday morning. both afternoons, your typical august heat, into the middle to
11:54 am
upper 80s. then it gets hot heading into next week. wednesday, thursday, and friday, into the low 90s. low 90s again on saturday, but by friday, those storms move through the area, should be clearing for the weekend and sunday, looks like we're in for another nice sunday, two in a row. 84 degrees sunday afternoon, and the humidity will be coming down next sunday, as well. we'll be right back. dear fellow citizen, hunting treasures with my daughter is wonderful. because before i'm ready, she'll be off to college. i want to help her pay her way there, like i do for my son.
