men's team free style to the top of the medal podium. our live coverage from rio starts right now. nbc 10 news starts now. good evening. i'm jacqueline london live in rio de janeiro, brazil, for day two of the olympic competitions are complete. michael phelps scored his 19th gold medal with his part in the free relay. team usa for women's gymnastics really impressed on the floor tonight. a devastating blow to the paralympic team before they take their field of play. we begin in the lehigh valley. investigators still working to sort out the details in the killing of an entire family including three young children. investigators confirmed today megan and mark short had been having domestic issues and there

was a handwritten murder/suicide note in the couple's singing spring home. drew smith spoke with a social worker about the pressures that sometimes lead to doing something so tragic. >> reporter: pictures posted by the short family tell only part of their story. here you see a young, happy family who appeared to be working through their youngest daughter willow's health issues. megan short even appeared in a children's hospital of philadelphia video discussing willow's heart transplant days after birth. >> a scary ride, very bumpy road. we finally feel like we're getting into our new normal. >> reporter: willow died at 2 years old but not from her condition. she was shot along with her siblings. police also found the bodies of the parents mark and megan, even the pet dog. there was a handwritten murder/suicide note but investigators haven't said who pulled the trigger. >> it was tragic. when you talk about the life of

pets, the life of children. >> reporter: this social worker has seen many cases where people snap and do the uh thinkablnthi. in an april post on the website, megan short wrote that ang vxie over her daughter left her with post-traumatic stress disorder. drew smith, nbc 10 news. oxford circle family have a neighbor to thank for helping them escape a fire. just after 6:00 sunday evening the top floor apartment caught fire. that family was not home. by -- >> i looked out my window and saw fire. and then somebody across the street. thank god for them. said get out of there, there's a fire up there.

turn in the pool here another the rio games. he took home the gold. for phelps it was his 19th olympic gold medal of all time. katie ledecky won the gold medal in the women's 400 meter free style race, smashing her own world record in the process by nearly two seconds. pittsburgh's leah smith joined ledecky on the podium winning the bronze. not making it on the medal stand in an individual swimming event is south jersey's kelsey. her hopes were dashed in under one minute. kelsey world, superstar swimmer from south jersey praying for gold. but after finishing fourth, she didn't advance to the finals.

>> my heart hurt. >> reporter: heart break for the family of seven who boarded three planes and a water taxi to cheer her on. what was that like when you saw kelsey after the race? >> i was kind of waiting, judging my reaction based on how she looked. if she was holding it together. she was holding it together. we all embraced and we all cried together. kelsey's whole goal at these olympics was to bring glory to god. so as a family, we celebrate together in victory and in defeat. we love her and whether she medals or not, she's not going to quit the sport. >> reporter: 2020? >> definitely 2020. >> reporter: kelsey's family says she is staying hungry and humble. right now she is going to be the

biggest cheerleader for team usa. she has an incredible attitude. she's also focusing on 2020 tokyo. she's going to keep swimming. let's talk about the paralympic team for russia and tell you what happened today. a humiliating defeat has been suffered by them even before their turn to take the field of play. today the international paralympic committee did what the olympic committee would not, banning the entire russian delegation after allegations of doping. some are calling the decision over reaching. >> it violates everybody's innate sense of justice to paint every single person on the paralympic team with a broad brush. >> reporter: the paralympics organization condemned the russian state's involvement but stopped short of blaming russian president vladimir putin. still we'll have a big day in

francis. she died after being beaten in a school bathroom. tomorrow a judge will decide whether the suspect's case could get moved to a higher court and face a harsher potential fun h punishment. a soldier accused of plotting with his teenage girlfriend to kill her mother gets underway tomorrow. caleb barnes is accused of stabbing 54-year-old cheryl silvanik to death while her 14-year-old daughter jamie watched. she's expected to testify against barnes. now to decision 2016. the presidential candidates are facing off on the economy with dueling speeches. donald trump is set to deliver a speech on what he would do to improve economic growth tomorrow in detroit. while hillary clinton will deliver what's being billed as a

major economic speech in the same city thursday. new polls show clinton gaining ground on economic issues. that's not the only place she's gaining. take a look at this new "washington post" abc news poll. it has clinton leading trump by eight points among registered voters. she has 50% to trump's 42%. that's double the 4-point advantage clinton had before the political conventions. the main courthouse at philadelphia's criminal justice center will open today. it's been closed since thursday when an elevator shot up and crashed through a concrete floor. a sheriff ee's deputy was badly hurt. debris from that incident injured another employee and the cause of the accident remains under investigation. >> reporter: up next, live from rio de janeiro, brazil, we are talking to the crew team for team usa on the men's side and

♪ i'm jacqueline london back live here in rio de janeiro, brazil, for the olympics. tomorrow is a big day for the crew team, men's and women's. they will battle for gold. and team usa says they have an advantage no one else has. the schuylkill river. >> boat house has a on the of history. >> reporter: he's powered his way to rio. part of the men's rowing team. >> learning to row behind the casinos in atlantic city at night is something i'll never forget.

kind of all the different lights shimmering down on the bay. >> reporter: he also spent plenty of time rowing in philly. it's a legendary challenge. . >> it's craziness. it's madness. boats are everywhere. >> reporter: it's also perfect practice for rio. the rowing team trains in princeton and those aren't the only members from our area. glenn o'connell is from philly. we have so many local athletes here in rio de janeiro competing and trying to get a gold, silver or bronze. we want to show you all of those athletes. there's a way you can take a look at it all and try to find your favorite. we are tracking those athletes and you can watch them during the games with our olympic zones specials. coming up a little later in the newscast a preview of some of the events you'll want to watch the most tomorrow. there are so many good ones,

it's almost hard to choose. hundreds gathered in mayfair tonight to salute philadelphia police officers. the rally called philly cops rock is meant to counter growing tension across the country and boost officers' morale. why so many thought this was necessary. >> reporter: the doors at the 15th district, still open. this is a 24/7 job for just a few hours it was not business as usual. commissioner ross said you can still support police and what change is made to the profession at the same time. >> i think the police have been knocked down, their spirits. >> reporter: for donna, a former police officer, supporting those still on the job is personal. >> i think at times they don't feel that anybody's standing behind them. >> reporter: the rally is born out of that concern.

pet store around 4:30 sunday afternoon. here they are. then walking out of the store. if you recognize these two men you're asked to contact police. from the nbc 10 delaware bureau, a second chance another life for more than two dozen dogs in wilmington. volunteers were on a mission to save these 30 dogs. the dogs were in a dallas shelter that was running out of space and their lives were on the line. so the organization stepped in, drove down, got the dogs and brought them back to find new homes. >> i mean, it's an amazing feeling. i know all the volunteers are so excited to be a part of it. most of our staff came in on their day off today to be able to help support this. >> all the dogs have been spayed or neutered and vaccinated. they'll be available for adoption this week. a black tie affair in center city.

folks were dressed to impress at the we feed the homeless philly annual event. seven time grammy nominated kelly price was tonight's featured performer. there was also dancing and great food. we feed the homeless philly distributes maeals to hundreds f struggling families in and around philadelphia. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, after a steamy and then stormy saturday, we add the sunshine and low humidity on sunday and the result, it's a big temperature difference from the city to the suburbs. as you see, philadelphia to some of the suburbs 64 degrees. even within the city limits of philadelphia we have a tremendous contrast. look at this, center city, 82. writtenhouse 80. 15-degree temperature difference at this time of night. this is the urban heat island

effect. the city holding in all of that heat even at this hour of the night. that's why we have all these neighborhood forecasting here because conditions can vary so much. you can get your own forecast right there on the bottom of the screen at any time during the weather. you don't have to wait until the end. we've had this land breeze during the day today. that's why it got up to near 90 even at the beaches. the ocean temperature a very warm 78 degrees. so that's way above average for this time of the year. and we're heating up this week. that's for sure. 88 degrees monday and tuesday. without much humidity, but it's really going to start going up on wednesday. and then it looks like we've got another heat wave coming and with high temperatures in the mid 90s and high humidity it may feel like it's 100 or more as we go toward the middle of the week. that's the big weather issue of

the week. s satellite and radar not showing us much around. there really isn't anything on the way either. so we're going to be dry for at least a couple of days here. and then as we go into wednesday -- so here we go through monday. hardly any cloud cover. remember, we'll get a bit of a sea breeze at the shore. won't be as hot at the shore tomorrow as it was today. tuesday generally dry as well. but the moisture is starting to pick up a little bit. and by wednesday, we at least have some chances of showers or storms, especially north and west during the afternoon with the heat of the day. for later today we've got nothing but sunshine. temperatures in the upper 80s, low humidity and even at the jersey shore look at the temperatures, not quite as high as today. only 81 in avlon. for the next few days not only the high temperature going up,

but look at the low temperatures. that's an indication of the humidity that's really going to be going up during this week as well. here we are, tuesday 89, wednesday 92. then the thunderstorm chances increase, the temperatures go up. next saturday looks kind of stormy. saturday and sunday before we start cooling off again. coming up in sports, the phillys with a real feat in the field, a triple play you've got to see. and sixers fans start salivating. a taste of what's to come as he makes his mark on the olympic games in rio.

i'm jacqueline london reporting life report ing live in rio de janeiro brazil. before we put a bow on this day two of competition, we want to tell you what you can look forward to tomorrow in day three. the crew team is taking to the water. the men's and women's rowing teams are in action. the men's squad has two rowers from new jersey and one there philadelphia. the entire women's team trained in princeton. the u.s. women's field hockey team has more than a dozen comple athletes from our area, they take on australia. the men's team squares off against venezuela. we will also be tracking several other local athletes taking part
