that appear to be very lopsided across the state of pennsylvania. here's a look county by county. the dark blue area in the bottom right corner, that's philadelphia. heavily favors hillary clinton. the counties in light blue also lean toward clinton. voters in the red areas support trump. it's the counties in purple that are split. berks, lehigh and hampton counties could make the difference in november. also having an impact on pennsylvania's senate race, where republican pat toomey is often forced now to answer for the man at the top of his party's ticket. we sent lauren mayk to ask him if that's a problem for his campaign. lauren? >> republicans across the country are being asked to weigh in on trump. it's sometimes controversial comments. but pat toomey, he's in this tight senate race. so will he go with the top of the ticket or go it alone? either way, trump's got a role

in this race. in pennsylvania, donald trump isn't campaigning alongside the republican senator running for reelection. but he's looming over the state senate race. do you support donald trump? do you plan to vote for him? >> as i have said repeatedly, i have not endorsed donald trump. there are things that he has said, a number of things he has said or done that give me great pause. and i have significant concerns about. so i remain in a mode of waiting to are persuaded. >> but while pat toomey waits, trump continues to stir controversy. >> how did his second amendment comments yesterday affect your thoughts about him? >> look, i don't know what he meant by that. he has attempted to clarify that. at a minimum, it was certainly a very careless expression. >> reporter: he hasn't changed his mind, he tells me, but it isn't stopping his democratic

opponent katie mcginty for making trump an issue. your opponent and democrats are constantly asking you to disavow things that he said, or tying you to him, even though you have not endorsed him. is he making it more difficult for you to win this race? >> no. now, let's be clear. katie mcginty is so liberal and out of step with pennsylvania voters, and she has such a poor record when she was chief of staff for tom wolf proposing the biggest tax increase pennsylvania had seen. >> reporter: mcginty said she can't run directly against him. >> it won't work. people in pennsylvania are smart enough to know there are two separate races going on. one is for president of the united states and one for senate. >> would that -- >> i think i've addressed the question. >> katie mcginty's campaign, i reached out to that campaign. they tied toomey to trump again. they said toomey had, quote,

made crystal clear that he's supporting trump and too ashamed to admit it out loud. now, again, toomey said he's not endorsed trump and hasn't made a final decision. but he does say hillary clinton is completely unacceptable. i'm lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. to our weather now. we're at the beginning of a stretch of dangerously hot days as we look down broad street from the kimmel center campus cam. glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the steamiest weather so far this summer. >> absolutely. and in parts of the area, it's just going over the edge here. the first alert that we issued yesterday goes thursday, now will extend through sunday for philadelphia, p.a. suburbs, new jersey, northern delaware. very hot and humid. feeling like 100 to 110.

110? that's kind of outrageous. dover reported 112 this afternoon. 91 degrees in philadelphia. close to 90 across much of the rest of the area. and the feels-like temperature, 98 in philadelphia right now. 104 in dover. even in the 90s at the shore. so we have an exceptional day today. and it's just going to get hotter. the thunderstorms, not much relief in the form of rain. unless you're up in the poconos. i'll tell you when thunderstorms might come, and which is going to be the hottest day of all with the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> okay. we'll see you in a bit, glenn. meantime, let's head south of the equator where my co-anchor jacqueline london is in rio de janeiro. we're talking lots of star power in the pool. also a new water problem that emerged today? >> reporter: yes.

the water problem that you're referring to has to do with the diving pool. there was also a water problem behind me by way of rain. there was so much rain that fell earlier today in rio, that all rowing here was canceled. the tennis stadium behind me, they had to delay play indefinitely. a lot of the cyclists had to contend with some really strong winds. as you know, last night was an incredible night to sit down and watch nbc 10 and the olympic coverage. swimming and gymnastics dominated. team usa is looking to get even more medals tonight. 21 gold medals for michael phelps. and undefeated international record for katie ledecky. hard to top those records. >> great to see the team racking up a lot of medals here. >> reporter: 2012's golden girl missy franklin looking to continue team usa's dominance of the 4 by 200 meter relay. chester county's sierra rungy.

>> i was like, she was like, are you ready yet? i need to dive in, now. >> reporter: what's in the water? we're not talking about the athletes. >> why not have a green pool. >> reporter: this greenish hue has everyone talking. today we learned from olympic officials that algae caused by heat and lack of wind created the color change. 44 straight olympic wins for women's basketball. they made history against serbia today. finally a medal for chester county's phillip dutton. the 53-year-old equestrian is the oldest olympian in these games. >> every olympic, a great achievement. but to be able to get six of them. and to bring home a bronze medal is pretty cool. >> also today, our local athletes dominated in women's volleyball. they beat serbia three games to one. they're undefeated. they're clinching that spot in the quarterfinal and they play

italy on friday. for now from rio de janeiro, let's send it back to my co-anchor, jim rosenfield in the news center. someone is climbing the outside of trump tower right here. a live look from the scene. he's using some type of suction cups to get up to the top. he's at least 17 stories up there now. a short time ago, we saw police who busted out the glass windows just above the man to try to catch him. but he simply moved away from them. and continued his climb. the building is home to donald trump's campaign headquarters, he also lives there. but he is not there at the moment. we'll continue to follow this breaking story out of new york city, and bring you new information just as soon as we get it on this man climbing the trump tower. we have more breaking news right here at home. live over the schuylkill river, near chestnut street in philly. three people were in the water right here, two of them have been rescued. but one is still missing, we're

told. divers are in the water looking at this point. we don't know how these people managed to get in the water. but we'll continue to follow this breaking news and bring you more information on this story as we get it as well. to this now. he flat-out lied. that's what a former aide to new jersey governor chris christie had to say about christie's involvement in the george washington bridge gate scandal. it's part of an e-mail sent by a christie aide that will be used in baronee trial next month. they're charged with helping to arrange lane closures on the bridge allegedly to punish the mayor for not endorsing christie. today christie called the e-mail ridiculous and denied he lied. a 6-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital this evening after being shot as she played outside. investigators have been reviewing surveillance videotape from the scene on north woodstock street. you're going to see two shooters firing here. you also see children running toward their homes. we spoke to another girl who was playing outside when those shots

were fired, and a father who went to shield his son. >> i ran down and grand the baby, and grand him and turned around. as quick as i did all that, and turned around, she was laying on the bottom of the step. >> police say as many as 20 shots were fired. the girl is expected to survive. police have charged a 19-year-old man with murdering his mother and her boyfriend inside their apartment last month. 54-year-old janice trunk and 44-year-old kevin smith were found shot to death back on july 31st. there was no sign that anyone broke in. authorities charged 19-year-old joshua trunk with murder. he had been in custody on unrelated drug charges on the night of the murders. a day at the park turned into a scary time this morning for a group of campers in north wilmington. paramedics treated a dozen youngsters who were stung by wasps. three children had to be taken to the hospital. an exterminator is checking out

the jill gymnasts glitzed. randy gyllenhaal has a story of how a berks county company really helped the team shine. >> reporter: every pass of the needle and each thread that follows is the start of a long journey from this production line in berks county on to the high-flying bodies of gymnasts in rio. >> this is our production floor. >> reporter: jeannie douglas is the lead designer of team usa's red, white and blue leotards. >> they're handmade in the united states. >> reporter: the company faces the monumental task every four years. forming a perfect fitting patriotic uniform for american gymnasts. >> i was inspired by the flag. i wanted to use it as literally as possible, highlighting their bodies. >> reporter: jeannie did gymnastics in high school and last night she got to watch as her creation propelled team usa

saying in part, it is blowing my mind how this same little girl i used to see doing flips on my bed at age 6 now has a gold medal. marcus hernandez promised to take his sister straight to wawa when she gets home. she competes for gold. i texted laurie's mom what does she love at wawa? her mom said she loves her sandwiches. with her success i think she deserves as many hoagies as she wants. we can tell you that coming up tonight on nbc 10, we're diving into the culinary culture of brazil. taking an adventure through rio to see what dishes and drinks rio does best. i've indulged just a little bit. i've got two favorites. we'll learn more a little later on "olympic zone" at 7:30. >> i know the latter is a beverage. we'll look forward to your report, jackie. see you in a bit. from the clouds in rio, to steamy weather here at home, nbc

10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz checking our next heat wave. >> the heat wave started today as we got to 93 degrees. the first alert we issued yesterday goes through sunday. it includes pennsylvania, suburbs, philadelphia, new jersey, and in delaware. and the heat index, the way it feels is up to 110 in parts of the area. if it gets above 105, that's considered a personal physical danger zone. you've really got to limit your time outdoors, drink a lot of liquids, watch out for the pets. and it is something potentially dangerous. especially when the low temperature doesn't get below 80. we're near 90 degrees now. even at the jersey shore. it has been hot today, even with a sea breeze. because the ocean is 83 degrees. that's tied for the warmest atlantic city ocean temperature ever recorded.

okay? that's why it's 83 in ocean city. 90 degrees in mays landing. the heat wave started today with the 93. we're going up a little bit each day. the feels-like temperature is going up each day. and like i said, it's going to get worse than it is now. as far as showers and storms, not much around. a couple showers up in the poconos. and some well to the west of berks county. not really moving much. but there's a lot more moisture back to the west that is going to be affecting us later on as we head toward the weekend. not a great chance of showers for the eagles preseason game, but a certainty of the heat. 95 degrees, feeling like 101. 97 is the feels-like at kickoff. 90 at the end of the game. this, again, is serious stuff. and as far as relief from thunderstorms, you're not going to be getting much during the

day thursday. generally to the north and west, that's where we have the greatest chance of seeing that. now, over the weekend, friday, just thunderstorms in lehigh valley. saturday just in the p.a. suburbs in lehigh valley. and the ten-day forecast, has the heat all the way through sunday. but then things get a little bit closer to normal later on. now we're going to head outside to meteorologist krystal klei to showcase the newest technology in our weather arsenal. >> reporter: yeah, and glenn, i can definitely confirm that it is hot outside. and it is muggy out here. you can feel the humidity is up. we're live in coatstown right now. there was a chance of some spotty storms which is why we came out here. most of them to the north and well to the west. but we still have the chance of

showers and thunderstorms as glenn just said as we move through into tomorrow, even your weekend. we'll be taking storm ranger where we decide is best, where the storms might be hitting in the following days. that's the greatest thing about storm ranger 10, we can take it to your neighborhood when we see the highest threat there. that's something you can stay with us for in the next few days as we track the potential for storms as well as the very, very high heat. we'll be right back.
