wildwood where many told us the heat wasn't as bad there. if you weren't swimming, you were as close to the waves as you possibly could be. you need to take it easy during this dangerous heat. >> that's exactly right. a lot of cities and towns in the area are offering services to help people stay safe. we've got more information on that scrolling at the bottom of your screen. >> let's go to sheena parveen for the details. you're saying storms, too? >> pretty strong storms. and a lot of that is in part due to the high heat and high humidity. we do have one severe thunderstorm warning for parts of chester county. it's heading toward montgomery county. could even move into the philadelphia area. this is a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30. it includes charlestown down through coatesville approaching westchester, and stretches from phoenixville down to coatesville. very heavy rain. a lot of lightning right over 76. here as we look in chester county, and even the potential

for hail in this storm. it's moving to the east around 35 miles an hour. it's going to be in chest business chester very soon. marion by about 5:30. philadelphia by about 5:45, and then on its way to camden. golf ball-sized hail is possibly getting even a little bit larger in size. as it continues moving to the east. so we'll be watching that very closely. damaging winds also expected with that storm. now we're looking through parts of bucks county. scattered heavy rain even up toward lehigh county in lehigh valley. near 476. this one showing indications of some hail, possibly golf ball-sized. again, we have some strong thunderstorms on the radar today, even as you get into parts of mercer county. we'll take a closer look at that coming up as well. 93 wilmington. 94 right now in dover. but when you talk about the humidity, take a look at the

olympic success. when i had the opportunity to meet this successive group this morning, i couldn't wait. five young ladies competing on the grandest stage of all. handling pressure with unbreakable composure. >> how do you tune out all the noise? >> i guess it's autopilot. once you're so focused you kind of don't hear anything other than like your selective hearing. i can hear the girls, i hear martha, and i can hear my coaches and sometimes hear my sisters and my family. it's just built in an athlete. >> i know martha karolyi said five years ago, i couldn't tell. did you know then that you had this type of potential? >> you would never pick me out of a crowd and say this girl will win gold medal. >> reporter: now gold for the all-around. four years ago that honor went to gabby doig las. gabby and aly have been to the

olympics before. did you teach the others from that experience? >> giving more advice on the media side. and how the olympics are going to get crazy. it was fun to be back on another olympic team with aly. we both reminisce of london, about everything. it's been fun. >> simone and aly, we saw you holding hands last night, which is so sweet. how great is it to have that type of friendship during such an intense competition? >> during the beam routines, we tuned everything. it was so loud in the crowd. but i could only hear laurie, maddy and gabby cheering for me. it's really special and really comforting to know that your teammates are all rooting for you. and at the end of the day you just want to do the best you can. >> reporter: event finals are up next for some of these ladies, sunday night on the vault and uneven bars. they're adorable. in the 6:00 half hour, we'll have more of my interview with

redemption. right now, let's send it back to the studios with keith and rosemary. >> thanks for that, jacqueline. you don't have to miss a bit of the olympic action. check out the nbc 10 app to live stream all of the events on your smartphone or tablet. we're going to take a hard right turn to one of our top stories. another innocent child is in the hospital after being shot in the middle of a philadelphia neighborhood. >> it's the second time a 6-year-old child has been caught in the cross fire of philadelphia's gun violence. last night it was in germantown. two nights ago in hunting park. randy gyllenhaal has been talking to police and neighbors about this latest shooting. randy, some neighbors describing their community as a war zone. >> reporter: bullets were flying throughout that neighborhood. i should tell you, at this point, at last check, that 6-year-old remains in critical condition, as you guys mentioned, the second 6-year-old this week to be hit by stray gunfire. we can tell you that philly police in the last hour or so

have offered a $10,000 reward in each of those cases. as that neighborhood in german town begins to document all the damage left behind. >> no, no, everything up there. >> reporter: with the help of daylight, the bullet holes are easy to spot. >> five shots. >> reporter: houses peppered with erratic gunfire, police say a turf war turned into a gun battle, one suspect firing an ak-47. >> it doesn't make no sense. this is not a military. >> reporter: julian williams was nearly caught in the crossfire. >> it almost penetrated the brick. >> reporter: police say the shootout was likely fueled by two rival groups. it left four people shot, including 6-year-old brown, sitting in his godfather's car when high-powered ammunition ripped through his chest. his family now pleading for the public's help. >> what is this? somebody needs to speak up and say something.

people's children are dying for no reason. >> reporter: philly police say their tip line has remained quiet. they're looking for a newer model mercury mountaineer spotted fleeing the scene. but they need help from witnesses. >> people are afraid. i think people often see things that occur in their neighborhoods, but because of fear and thinking that they don't want to get involved. >> reporter: many on this block say those suspects seemed particularly vicious, and reckless, and they're worried they might come back. >> i started crying last night because, like, they babies. it's sad. >> reporter: and a 6-year-old girl was hit by gunfire earlier this week. police are now actually checking ballistic evidence to see if these two cases might be connected. meantime, we're expecting a vigil and a protest at the site of the germantown shooting, happening tonight at 7:00. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. the defense rests. today lawyers for pennsylvania

attorney general kathleen kane closed their case without calling a single witness. now it's up to the jury to decide kane's fate. nbc 10's deanna durante has more from the courtroom. >> reporter: outside of court, kathleen kane is smiling and says she feels good. inside a courtroom she told a judge she doesn't feel prosecutors made a case against her. this week prosecutors brought multiple witnesses to show kane leaked grand jury material to a reporter. an operative, josh morrow, said he and kane plotted to get even with a staffer they blamed for a leak. morrow was caught talking about it on a secret recording made by the fbi in an unrelated investigation. in which he said kane was unhinged. >> there's devastating evidence against the attorney general.

an early-morning attack of a septa driver is caught on tape. the passenger was getting off the route 37 bus last week, he started arguing with the driver. he first walks off, then as you see here, gets back on, slams the driver's head into the dashboard, and bites his face before running away. call police if you can help catch this suspect. today funerals were held for the berks county mother and her three kids found dead after an apparent murder/suicide last weekend. family and friends gathered to remember megan short and her children. her husband, mark, was also found shot dead inside the family's sinking sprink home. police say the couple had domestic problems. officers also discovered a suicide note at the scene, but police have not revealed who pulled the trigger. we expect to learn more at a news conference on monday. new at 5:00, jerry sandusky took the stand today trying to overturn his conviction.

the former penn state coach told the court he never molested boys and that he was not properly represented when he went to trial back in 2012. now, if his appeal is successful, the charges could potentially be dismissed. skinny joey merlinuo is out of jail in florida. he was released on $5 million bond. he was arrested on fraud and extortion charges last week. he must wear a bracelet and stay in his boca raton home. but he can travel to philadelphia to attend parents' weekend at his daughter's college. now to our first alert weather. and this dangerous heat. philadelphia is now keeping some city pools open longer this season. here's the deal. 21 pools were supposed to close this weekend, but because of the heat wave, only eight will shut down. the city is closing the pools because of a shortage of lifeguards. many of whom are returning to school this month. >> as the mercury rises in the

lehigh valley, the cost of the swim takes a dive. during this weekend's heat advisory, kids can swim at the jordan and mac pools for 2 bucks. the irving pool will run anyone 4 and up $1. >> the water temperature above average, that sand way too hot on your toes if you're walking down to the beach. you've got to wear the flip-flops. some events have been canceled or postponed down there due to the extreme heat and humidity. safety, of course, is key over these next few days as this heat wave continues. in fact, scrolling at the bottom of your screen, you will see local heat lines that are open. >> mercer county right there. let's go to meteorologist sheena parveen for the details, not only of the heat, but also some rain. >> also some thunderstorms. at the bottom of your screen, you'll also see your seven-day forecast. rehoboth beach, this is a live look near the boardwalk in

rehoboth beach, the dry side. but we have thunderstorms out there, some of which are fairly strong across the area. even potentially some severe thunderstorms across the area right now. mainly moving into lower parts of montgomery county, and chester county. so here's a look at the radar. we have a severe thunderstorm warning for chester county, parts of lower montgomery county. that is moving in the direction of philadelphia and will be there in the next 30 minutes or so. so the radar here kind of showing you a time lapse of what's been going on with this storm. with this afternoon, any strong to severe thunderstorms we have could be producing damaging winds near 60 miles an hour. heavy rain, lightning be. and we are seeing the potential for hail in some of these storms. we've seen seen indications of golf ball-sized hail. this severe thunderstorm warning for chester county, parts of montgomery county, heading towards philadelphia, damaging winds, heavy rain, lightning and hail. you want to get ip doors with that thunderstorm. we have a few more moving through the lehigh valley, even

bucks county and closer to mercer county in new jersey. for the rest of this evening, the rest of the area really dealing with the heat and humidity still. but the heat and humidity really fueling these thunderstorms at the same time. that's why we're seeing even some of these storms becoming strong to severe. now, aside from this, we're dealing with temperatures that feel around 100 degrees. but that is also what's fueling all this thunderstorm activity. as far as south jersey and delaware is concerned, we don't have anything in the way of storms right now. all of the thunderstorm activity will remain north and west of philadelphia, even as we go into tomorrow. but still the heat in the forecast. if you look at the seven-day, you can see the 90s scrolling at the bottom of your screen. we're officially in heat wave number five. those 90s are going to last all the way through the weekend. the first alert is going to last through the weekend, too, because of humidity. feeling anywhere from 100 to 110 degrees. in dover, it actually feels like 118 right now. that's what the humidity is

doing. it's fueling all these storms around. i think these storms are going to be lasting a little bit longer, a little while longer, and even through tonight we see the chance for thunderstorms around. but aside from that, it's going to stay hot and it's going to stay humid as we go into your friday evening, and parts of the area you will want an umbrella if you're heading out. but again, that severe thunderstorm warning will go until 5:30 as of right now, heading towards the philadelphia area. again, with that severe thunderstorm we could be seeing winds near 60 miles an hour. also heavy rain and lightning. here's a closer look at that storm. it's going to go until 5:30. so we'll be watching that very closely for you. severe thunderstorm warning there. it includes norristown, westchester seeing heavy rain. devon seeing very heavy rain, too. it's tracking mostly to the east at 35 miles an hour. again, that storm heading towards philadelphia. philadelphia by about 5:47. camden closer to 6:00 p.m. and that is the severe storm

donald trump returned to pennsylvania today where he appeared to give a mixed message about something he said about president obama and isis. you may remember, he called the president the founder of the terrorist group, and said that hillary clinton is the isis mvp. here's what he said to supporters today in erie. >> so i said, the founder of isis. obviously i'm being sarcastic. but not that sarcastic to be honest with you. >> trump also a message for his former republican rivals, saying they need to, quote, get over it, and support him for president. >> meanwhile, a new poll shows clinton leading trump by 11 points in pennsylvania. it shows trump leading among men and clinton leading among white women. listen to this, in a rare show of humility, trump conceded that he could come up short in november. he told a gathering of ministers on thursday that he's having a tough time in utah specifically.

as you can imagine, the high heat hit workers particularly hard today. a hat was absolutely necessary to protect these construction workers laying a driveway in brookhaven, delaware county this afternoon. >> this can't be an easy job either on a day like today. installing cable in springfield, delaware county. hopefully they had plenty of water on hand. i'm sure they did. that's the name of the game here, you've got to drink that water and stay safe during this dangerous heat. >> a lot of cities and towns in the area, they're offering services to help you do just that. in fact, if you look at the bottom of your screen, some contact information is scrolling right now. you see the #first alert. there it is, heat wave hot lines, right at the bottom. >> with this kind of heat, oftentimes storms roll in. meteorologist sheena parveen has the details on that. sheena? >> yeah, because it's so hot and humid, it's really helping to fuel some thunderstorms. not for everybody, but especially if you're north and west of philadelphia. we've been seeing some very strong storms around. now, one severe thunderstorm in

essex, the warning has expired. that one expired at 5:30. but now we have another strong thunderstorm which is still kind of a piece of that. they broke off a little bit into two separate heavy areas. in westchester, heavy rain, a lot of lightning near 202. thornberry, norristown, the heavy rain moving in. we'll keep watching these strong thunderstorms. these are all moving mainly to the east at 35 miles an hour. we'll look at the one right over radner and 476 here. this will be approaching marion by 5:33, philadelphia right around 5:45. so if europe's in the philadelphia area, especially you may have noticed the skies darkening. we do have one strong storm on the way. we've seen hail around downingtown. golf ball-sized hail. any storms that develop the rest of this evening, there's potential for heavy rain, damaging winds and hail. we are definitely seeing indications of that. now we're looking at lambburgville, near buckingham

and out the door. >> reporter: they cleaned out the register, grabbing two grand all in a minute. >> they used a brick from the back alleyway, a big one. wound up like a softball player would and literally threw it right at our front door. >> reporter: police believe the team of thieves have robbed as many as 15 liquor stores since may 20th, striking five times near midnight on july 4th alone. an alarm scared them off. >> they're looking for quick cash. they didn't take any product from us. from the stories i heard, they hit four other liquor stores the same night. >> reporter: this is video from last weekend. with their faces covered they r robbed the liquor store. the surveillance video clearly shows one of the suspects' faces. the group hit this store july 21st. with 300,000 in inventory, he

worries about his livelihood. >> they don't find any money or something, maybe they can smash the whole bottles. you never know. we want them caught. >> not only just because they came after our liquor store, but everybody else works hard. we're all part of one industry. >> all the agencies involved have gotten together and we're working together to try to get these guys off the street. >> reporter: we counted, and in at least three of these robberies the brazen crooks chose to hit liquor stores within one minute of a local police department. just across the parking lot, the building with the green sign, that's audubon police. cydney long, nbc 10 news. a burglar in berks county made an after-hours trip to a spring township drive-through, but it wasn't for a combo. look at these pictures and then watch. he squeezes through the tiny drive-through window at this mcdonald's early wednesday morning. police say that he got into the safe, stole a bank bag filled with cash.

meters in 10.74 seconds. her fastest time ever. earning her a trip to the olympics, and the title the second fastest woman in the world. so remarkable, especially considering many said she would never run again. because of a torn ncl, acl and hamstring. she is doing so well, i can't wait to watch her tonight. she has a huge support system. you might hear me screaming all the way back in philadelphia when she hits the track. 8:00 tonight in the 100 meters. make sure you watch. also tonight, more of my interview with the final five. it's something you definitely want to watch. they captured the gold medal, of course, and they captured america's hearts this week. the young ladies you see in competition, i can tell you, they are much different from the ones i met this morning.

if you're heading down to the shore this weekend -- >> for the second straight summer now, a weak canadian dollar is forcing many tourists from north of the border to just skip the shore. ted greenberg tells us the impact it's having on the businesses near the beach. >> i love this place. >> reporter: for pierre, summer means spending time at ocean view resort campground in dennis township. >> just with my wife. >> reporter: but he's noticed far less of his fellow canadians are here with him. >> this year it's very remarkable. because just one reason, money. >> reporter: a weak canadian dollar, as of thursday it was worth just 77 cents for every u.s. dollar.

likely get ahead of it and put that out in january or maybe even as early as this coming october. >> reporter: tourism leaders say they've focused their marketing efforts on places like ohio and western pennsylvania. hoping americans who drive a distance will decide to stay here longer. ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> we are dealing with dangerous heat today. the humidity is making it feel even hotter. we're also dealing with thunderstorms. the heat is fueling that. a hot day at rehoboth beach. it's dry at rehoboth beach, dry in most of new jersey and delaware. we're seeing the thunderstorms mainly in parts of pennsylvania and also closer to mercer county. so we'll zoom in here to chester county. that's where we still have one area of heavy rain, maybe even a little lightning right near westchester, edge mont. that's moving south a little bit. concord should see this very soon. the severe thunderstorm we were

talking about earlier has fallen apart. we have heavy rain here, philadelphia dealing with moderate rain as well right near 95. for the evening drive tonight, you may be just dealing with some showers as you're driving, depending where you are. especially near 295 here. salem in a bit of a break. there is some rain maybe heading in that direction. now we're talking about storm ranger 10, the only mobile radar you will see on tv. and we have it. the white sweeps, those are stationary radars. but the red sweep we have right around the trenton area, that is storm ranger 10. we drove it out to trenton and mercer county, and we can move it anywhere we want to get a better view of storms that the stationary radars may not be able to see so well, because as you get farther away, the view becomes less specific. so now we're near one thunderstorm near pennington. hopewell township, heavy rain here. this is moving out of bucks county. and continuing to move into new

jersey. trenton for the most part seeing the overcast skies. but the heat and humidity, that's going to stay high as we go through the rest of this evening, and especially over the weekend. we still have a first alert out for dangerous heat. the philadelphia area, pennsylvania suburbs, new jersey and delaware. some areas in delaware right now feel around 120 degrees. i'll show you that in a second. first alert will run through sunday, hot and humid, making it feel close to 110 in some spots. now we look at the feels-like temperature. when you factor in the humidity, look at dover, feels like 118 degrees right now. no rain relief anytime in the next few hours. feels like 107 in philadelphia. feels like 100 in mount holly. a lot of rain-cooled air in coatesville only feeling like 78 degrees. huge difference there. vineland feels like 107. atlantic city feels like 104 degrees. look at your neighborhood temperatures tomorrow. 98 for the high in packer park, feeling like 110. the red number is the feels-like

temperature. allentown 97. feeling closer to 105. and still the chance of some scattered thunderstorms mainly north and west of philadelphia. if you're in new jersey, millville feels like 97 degrees. if you are along the shore, stone harbor, 90 degrees. and delaware, if you're in harrington, 96. but feeling closer to 115 tomorrow. here's a look at future weather. tonight we're going to hold on to the rain chances as we go through the evening. by 10:30, we could see some activity in delaware possibly. but if you're heading out this evening, hang on to the umbrella. for your saturday, most of the day dry. but north and west of philadelphia, chance of some late day thunderstorms. sunday we'll still be mainly dry. but still the chance north and west of philadelphia. but not for everybody. so here's a look at your weekend forecast. hot and humid. temperatures in the 90s. and like i mentioned, not all neighborhoods will be seeing the rain chance over the weekend. it's mostly going to be pennsylvania suburbs and lehigh valley. if you're along the shore, expect it to be staying dry, with temperatures close to 90 degrees in some spots.

rosemary connors reports, many parents are hoping she will become a new role model for their girls. >> try anything. it's possible. anything's possible. >> reporter: the proof was in the pool last night in rio, when simone manuel became the first african-american woman to individually medal in swimming. a feat she said she accomplished for those who came before her and will come after her. >> i just want to be an inspiration. you can do it. >> reporter: at the marion anderson rec center in philadelphia, the pool today was abuzz about manuel's gold medal. >> it just was an overwhelming feeling at the time. when she cried and said how much she couldn't believe it, like that actually had me in tears. >> reporter: a summertime camp counselor at the rec center shared in the history making moment with her 13-year-old daughter, a swimmer herself. >> this is a first. and it's really cool. >> i actually think it meant

a war zone. neighbors describe the chaotic scene and military firepower that left a 6-year-old fighting for his life. we begin with dangerous heat out there. people trying to cool off at the shore. but there's not much relief, even at the beach. look down at cape may this evening. parts of the delaware valley are cooling off now a bit anyway thanks to some rain that's moving through. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is tracking this oppressive heat. also some storms out there, sheena? >> yeah, we're going to start with the storms. we've seen very strong thunderstorms today. for the most part they've weakened a bit but we're still dealing with rain for the evening commute. near philadelphia, morrisville, del rand, willingboro all seeing rain at the moment. it continues in parts of chester county near westchester, glen mills now seeing some of that moderate to heavy rainfall. for the evening commute in these

areas, you're dealing with wet roads. the one thing it's doing is really helping to cool those temperatures down. south brunswick seeing the heavy rain here. it's more near pennington and hopewell township that we're watching closely because some of that rain is heavy with lightning around, too. temperature-wise, it is very hot outside, except for the areas that saw the rain. the temperature in coatesville, 79 degrees. philadelphia 94. vineland 92. even mount holly 92. the big concern is how hot it actually feels when you factor in the humidity. philadelphia, feeling like 105. if you're in dover, you feel like 116 right now. vineland feeling like 107. mount holly feeling close to 100 degrees there. so we'll keep the heat and the humidity in the forecast for tonight, and all the way through your weekend. so we still have a first alert out for dangerous heat. philadelphia, pennsylvania suburbs, new jersey and delaware, this will run through sunday. your entire weekend will be hot and humid. both weekend days
