deadly heat. the oppressive temperatures are being blamed for a third death in philadelphia this weekend. what you need to know to stay cool and safe. robbed in rio. ryan lochte is speaking out after robbers targeted him and other olympic swimmers celebrating their big win. we'll explain the changes in the liquor law in pennsylvania that takes effect today. nbc 10 news starts now. right now at 6:00, dangerous heat. we are in day five of a heat wave that's showing no sign of letting up any time soon. and you won't get a whole lot of relief at the shore either. here's a live look at cape may where people are as close to the water as possible. it feels like it's over 100 degrees. thanks for joining us this evening. i'm rosemary connors. the extreme weather continues as health officials report the third heat-related death just this week in philadelphia.

this is the time to stay hydrated, keep an eye on the elderly and take it easy indoors. tonight we have live team coverage of this dangerous heat. we begin with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. you're tracking the heat and some summer storms moving in. >> yeah, a lot of people would enjoy a little storm to cool us off, but we're not getting much of that. and we have now extended the first alert for the dangerous heat all the way through tuesday. the entire area's covered. the worst of this is this philadelphia, delaware and south jersey. it's through tuesday evening. the feels-like temperature, 100 to 110, and the longer the heat wave goes, the more dangerous it becomes. it just builds up especially in those row homes in philadelphia. 96 degrees in philadelphia now feeling like it's over 100 with more of that to come. we'll show you those ugly numbers coming up in just a few minutes. >> thanks for that, glenn. we continue our team weather coverage with lauren mayk.

she's live along kelly drive in fairmount park. you spoke to a doctor for some advice on keeping cool in this hot weather. >> reporter: if you can stay inside in the air conditioning, do that. but here along kelly drive, we are seeing people out exercising, even jogging. that brings us to the next bit of advice. that is this. keep water with you and drink it all day. in this heat we all need to take precautions. it's heat that's not just uncomfortable. it's dangerous. >> i can lead to mild dehydration, but people can get into a lot of trouble with heat exhaustion and heat stroke if they're outside for long periods of time. >> reporter: in west oak lane firefighters who have been carrying heavy gear to battle a fire here are hydrating and taking more precautions. >> within 10 to 15 minutes i was already rotating the crews out because they had exerted all their energy plus with the heat they're sweating as it is. >> reporter: you don't need a fire to feel this heat. >> it's horrific. >> reporter: we found linda

matt kuchar took bronze. >> i've never felt this sort of pride just busting out of my chest before. >> reporter: 157 women. >> and in the marathon three american women finished in the top ten. brian mooar, nbc news, rio. tonight we're following developing news out of philadelphia's kensington neighborhood. a 16-year-old boy was found shot dead inside a car here on east orleans street. police were called to the scene at 2:00 this afternoon. the teen was shot in the back of the head. no arrests in this case. two people are dead after this three-car crash on lincoln drive. police tell us a 23-year-old man who died was driving too fast and jumped the median. he crashed into one car. the impact of that crash pushed him back over the median where he hit a third car. a second driver, a 16-year-old girl, also died in this accident. cop cars set on fire as

the liquor control board plans to extend sunday hours to other stores starting next month. that will bring the total number of stores open on sunday to more than 300. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> yeah, wish i could give you better news on a break in this heat wave, but we're not going to be seeing much at least in the next couple of days. the first alert, we are now extending through tuesday. the worst of it is in philadelphia, delaware and south jersey, but the first alert coverage everywhere, even at the shore it's dangerous heat. through tuesday evening. the longer the heat wave goes, the more danger it becomes because the heat just continues to build and build and build. we were 93 wednesday, 95 thursday, 98 yesterday. felt like 110. that was the worst of the heat wave it looks like. today 97 felt like 1 o 4.

the next two days feeling like 1 101. relief at the shore? not much. 96 at summer's point. 95 at stone harbor. you notice the ocean temperature down to 67 degrees. this is where the feels-like temperatures have been the worst. in delaware, 105 in talliville, 108 in meadow glen. 115 in dover. 113 at lewis right at the beach. any relief in the form of showers or storms? not much right now. we've had one storm go through allentown. that went through quickly. there's more back to the west. it could be affecting parts of the area later tonight. this is after 10:00. pretty strong thunderstorms going through parts of the area and that may be it for the rest of the night. we're going to be seeing some thunderstorms on tuesday.
