today's olympic coverage on nbc 10 is brought to you locally in part by your delaware valley bmw centers. bmw. the ultimate driving machine. nbc 10 breaking news. >> and that breaking news, kathleen kane convicted. pennsylvania's top law enforcement officer is now a felon. after a jury found her guilty a few hours ago. good evening, i'm jim rosenfield. jurors convicted kane of all nine charges she faced including perjury and criminal conspiracy. nbc 10's deanna durante has been in the courtroom every day of the trial and she was there for the verdict. >> reporter: it was a quick exit for kathleen kane. for more than a week, she entered through the front door of the montgomery county courthouse smiling and waving. tonight, the convicted attorney general leaves through a back door. >> the fact that she would commit criminal acts while she's the top prosecutor is a

disgrace. >> reporter: prosecutors are not celebrating the verdict. >> it's a sad day for the commonwealth. chief law enforcement officer, tom wolf of pennsylvania, the attorney general, has been convicted. >> reporter: the jury found kane used her office to embarrass a former staffer, leaked grand jury material to a newspaper in order to make that happen, lied and used her people to plot the revenge and also cover it up. from her former boyfriend to her political adviser, the jury heard days of testimony from the prosecution. and from the defense, not one witnesses. a move her team of lawyers say backfired. >> it's a strategy, we obviously thought it would work but the first person to say we were wrong. >> reporter: kane is set to be sentenced within 90 days. it is unclear if she's going to resign, though. many including the governor are calling for it and before she left the courtroom, the judge warned her against retaliating against any of the witnesses saying if she's caught doing so, she'd be, quote, locked up.

in norristown, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. and stay with nbc 10 for continuing coverage of the kane conviction from the question of a possible resignation to her sentencing. we'll track it on air and on the nbc 10 app. now to this heatwave being blamed tonight in part for the deaths of four people in philadelphia. let's get right to meteorologist sheena parveen and first alert neighborhood forecast. the dangerous heat going to last one more day? >> that's right, jim. for this evening we have rain relief. it's still hot and humid outside. especially if you are in delaware, we have the rain around. temperatures still feel close to 90 degrees in philadelphia. rain-cooled air making dover feel like 75. big difference when you go farther south with still at least some light to moderate rain falling. still feels like 81 mt. holly. 84trenton. if you look at the seven day, we

start to break out of the 90s in some areas but still hot. pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, this is going to go through tomorrow evening with temperatures in the 90s. feeling around 100 degrees. you want to hydrate, stay cool. avoid several hours outside at the same time. in fact, tomorrow, that's the seventh day of heatwave number five. again, with those temperatures dangerously hot. coming up we'll take a closer look at your neighborhood forecast and another round of some thunderstorms. >> and sheena, as you know, even after the sun sets, the scorching heat can still be dangerous. local doctors telling nbc 10 tonight they've seen an increase in people with heat-related issues the past few days. >> most important thing is they have to listen to their own bodies. if somebody has a medical history, somebody that's taking a lot of blood pressure medicati medications, people that have had heat illness before, they are particularly prone to be overcome in weather like this. >> and we found this church group delivering fans to people

in southwest philadelphia tonight. how nice is this? they raised the money and bought the fans as part of their summer fund-raiser. ♪ s. good evening, i'm jacqueline london joining you live from rio de janeiro on this tenth day of competition. simone biles and laurie hernandez added to their medal counts but allyson felix and the 400 meter race has everyone talking. did you see it? take another look. felix looking for her seventh olympic medal. she entered the homestretch trailing miller of the bahamas. here comes felix. just feet to go, miller dives head first beating felix b by .007. felix takes it. all-around gold medalist simone biles was at it on the final on the balance beam. already the owner of three olympic golds in rio, biles

slipped on the beam but still managed to take home the bronze. her teammate laurie hernandez was also in the beam final. the new jersey native wowed the crowd with a near flawless routine. hernandez took home the silver medal, her first individual olympic medal. i caught up with both of those young ladies afterwards. they talked about how their relationships off the mat carry right into the competition. >> i think we drive each other and motivate each other more than if we were alone so i think it helps us a lot. >> she's like an older sister to me. i think there's a lot of love going on between us. so i just, i admire her. >> reporter: and hernandez almost did not get the chance to compete. she was almost sidelined after an injury. we're going to speak to a local doctor who actually helped her get better. that story is coming up. when i interviewed both of those young ladies earlier, they really had their game faces on, a stark contrast to the giggles

and laughter we saw last week. a clear example of how they're able to turn it on and off which is necessary for competition and in person, they are so petite, really pint-sized powerhouses. jim? >> such great competitors, jacqueline. we'll see you soon. now to the nbc 10 investigators. philadelphia schools have been failing at fire drills. reporter mitch blacher has proof the district told the state the drills were done when they weren't. >> i have certified that we're in compliance when we were clearly not in compliance. >> reporter: superintendent william hite didn't try to hide his mistake. he found his signatures are all over these state certifications. >> i called the department of education, myself, to report i had been sending them information about being in compliance when we clearly were not. >> reporter: for the past three school years, he's told the state department of education every one of his schools performed all required fire drills. one per month while school's in session. state law requires superintendents to certify the

drills happened. >> after your report, obviously, we were not in compliance. >> reporter: our original reports revealed the reality that few philadelphia public schools did the ten fire drills each year as required by law. we also exposed city building inspectors documenting schools needing additional emergency evacuation drills. in the records we surveyed, each school passed its inspection. even some that lack a fire safety and evacuation plan. these signed certifications are now the third example of a government agency missing what we found. this time it's the department of education. >> why isn't the department of education making sure that these certifications are accurate? >> i think because the department of education is vastly underfunded and understaffed. >> reporter: state representative james robach represents west philly and is minority chairman of the house education committee. what are you going to do? >> going to talk to the secretary and to the department and see if we can get a higher

level of urgency. >> reporter: to do that, he'll have to get more interest from the state department of education than we did. the secretary refused to talk about emergency drill oversight. the department saying in a statement it relies on schools to submit accurate information in a timely manner and is continuing to monitor the situation. the department's statement goes on to say it can't comment further because local law enforcement may have been contacted. a department spokesperson says this may be a matter for the a.g. or district attorney to investigate. here at the philadelphia district attorney's office, no one would confirm whether they are investigating this. superintendent hite told us that so far, the district has not been contacted by law enforcement. >> there's so many potential checkpoints on this that should have caught this that didn't and it's got to be fixed. >> reporter: pennsylvania's auditor general says he's now investigating the accuracy of school safety certifications. >> the fact that they're not doing that, whether it's certified, whether they're signing these papers or not, the fact they're no doing it, that's a major problem.

that risks the health and safety of the kids and the employees of the district. >> i don't have the time and ability to go through 223 schools and check those logs myself. >> reporter: superintendent hite told us he relies on his staff to vet and verify the sometimes hundreds of documents that cross his desk in a given day. including the person who was supposed to check the fire drill logs. >> that individual is no longer with the district, and we are -- >> did he get fired for this? >> we are -- well, no longer with the district. >> reporter: the district has posted a job opening for a new fire and safety operations officer. one of several changes philly schools are making because of our investigation. the school district says it is making sweeping changes to its fire drill procedures for the upcoming school year. the school reform commission is supposed to vote on a new plan this week. for the investigators, mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. vice president aal assist.

in decision 2016 tonight, hillary clinton continues her push for pennsylvania. tuesday she's scheduled to speak at a voter registration event at west philadelphia high school. clinton joined vice president joe biden in his hometown of scranton on monday and the v.p. attacked donald trump calling him the least prepared major party nominee ever to potentially oversee american national security then blasted him on the economy. >> he's trying to tell us he cares about the middle class. give me a break. and to repeat myself, it's such a bunch of malarky. it makes no sense. >> after the rally, biden gave linton a tour of his childhood home in scranton. donald trump says hillary clinton lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on isis. he made those comments in youngstown, ohio, monday, where he also unveiled his plan to fight terrorism. the republican nominee called for the extreme vetting of immigrants and an ideological test in order to be admitted to

the u.s. ♪ practically perfect is how many might describe laurie hernandez, the new jersey gymnast who has just wowed the crowds in rio with her retunes on the floor and beam. earlier this summer she was in and and tried everything to heal an injured leg and that's when a doctor from cherry hill stepped in. as nbc 10's rosemary connors explains, the rest is olympic history. >> pretty good. >> reporter: beaming with pride, dr. scott greenberg can't help but watch team usa gymnast lawyer ary hernandez and feel like he played some part in her journey. the new jersey native came to his cherry hill office earlier this year hoping he could help her heal an injury that seemed to sideline her chances at gold. >> when she would land or squat, he leg would give out on her. >> reporter: her performances in rio have solidified hernandez as

it's going to be hot, just not as hot. not as brutally hot with oppressive humidity like we've seen recently. so through tuesday evening, the first alert is going to stay in effect. heat and humidity with temperatures in the 90s tomorrow will be making it feel close to 100 degrees. areas closer to 110 possibly. so you want to hydrate. stay cool. never stay outside in this kind of weather for several hours at a time. if you have to be outside, stay in the shade. check on the elderly. never leave children and animals in the car. we always have to unfortunately remind people of that. here's a look at future feels-like temperatures. for tomorrow, heat and humidity making it feel very hot again. as we go to lunchtime tomorrow, this is noon. already feeling close to 100 degrees in some areas. then tomorrow afternoon, we could be feeling around 105 to maybe 110 in parts of the area. so another very hot day. we should be seeing afternoon thunderstorms but then we go into wednesday. humidity won't be as bad. we'll be feeling mostly around the mid to low 90s.

supporters of the late frank rizzo are fighting to save a statue of the former philadelphia mayor. listen. >> police officer david f. sampson, end of watch. wednesday. >> they rallied tonight in center city days after an anti-police brutality group filed a petition. the group wants rizzo's statue across from city hall taken down. several of its members were there to greet rizzo supporters at the start of tonight's rally. the group wantsy his statue e removes and points to his treatment of minorities. rizzo's family calls the allegation nonsense. up next an injured carson wentz sidelined for the next few weeks. so how crucial will that missed time be? one of his teammates weighs in when we come back. one day, history was made.
