moms know kids grow strong when they milk life. the dangerous heat continues. a big announcement about her future. a u.s. runner goes down but it's how she got back up that makes all the difference. i'm jacqueline london in rio with a story of sportsmanship. we begin with the first alert that covers both the dangerous heat and potential for severe weather. our triple team of

meteorologists have it covered. glenn? >> yeah, keith, those storms are moving into our area right now. as you can see this line of thunderstorms, it's actually a curved line, and we have areas that are moving faster than others. like this middle part. it's known as a bow echo. that's sometimes where you see the strongest wind gusts. it's also right over the reading area. and as we zoom in a little bit, you'll see it is right over downtown reading now. it's moving pretty fast. so it's going to be move out of reading pretty quickly, too. pottstown at 5:13, limerick at 5:36. there's also quite a bit of lightning with us. we've had over 1,000 strikes in the last 15 minutes or so. we have a severe thunderstorm watch that covers much of the area until 11:00. the warnings until 5:15. but there will be more warnings to come. sheena parveen has more on the

heat. >> yeah, it's very hot outside. the heat and humidity are helping to fuel the storms, which is why we are under this severe threat. here's a live look out at center city, philadelphia. we have clouds around. temperature 94 degrees. it feels more like 100 through parts of the area. even hotter than around 100 degrees. 90 allentown, 92 mount holly. a little air-cooled rain trying to move in. when you factor in the humidity, it feels like 105 in philadelphia. feels like 109 in dover. we're just about ten minutes ago it felt like 110. you can still see the dangerous heat is still with us. feels like 106 in vineland. quite a difference when you factor in the humidity. so the weather story is still the dangerous heat. we've been in a heat wave since last wednesday. that's when we started in the 90s. today is day number seven of that heat wave. since last thursday we have felt

over 100 degrees. in case you're wondering, the normal for this time of the year, that's 86 degrees. today so far we've gotten to 94. we've felt as hot as 105. we'll take a look at when this is finally going to come to an end and i'll track the storms for you. >> the team coverage continues in a few minutes. krystal klei will show us how the heat has the people pulling out the tissues, coming up at 5:20. we're talking about a big shakeup in the pennsylvania attorney general's office. just hours after her conviction on criminal charges, kathleen kane has announced she will resign. deanna joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: well, the acting attorney general, bruce caster, has just wrapped up a news conference here in which he said he had no stake in the investigation against kathleen kane or the outside of her

business trial. but as of tomorrow he will be the acting attorney general of pennsylvania. he lost a primary bid to tom corbett who won one term as governor of pennsylvania. now, caster said before reporters today talking about kathleen kane saying that she is a qualified attorney. but also when i asked him about how many days he had spent here in the office, he said they communicated a lot via e-mail and that she was accessible to him. he was brought here to the office in march to oversee the day-to-day legal activities in the office, because you'll remember, kathleen kane while she was undergoing this criminal investigation, she lost her law license. and caster talked about those staffers who were involved in the criminal investigation, and that he may now begin taking a good look at their employment status here in the attorney general's office. >> i will review every aspect of

the case, which i was not permitted to do up until this point. and decide what is the right thing to do. p i don't know many of these people, and i need to find out a lot more about the case than i do now. i only started reading about it this morning. >> reporter: now, if you'll recall last night, kathleen kane was convicted on a number of criminal counts, including felony perjury. she was accused of using her office to embarrass a former staffer by leaking grand jury documents. she said it has been an honor to represent the people of pennsylvania, and her position ends tomorrow. >> deanna, thank you. meanwhile today, hillary clinton continues her push for pennsylvania. the democratic presidential candidate made her second campaign stop in two days. and lauren mayk has followed her

from scranton to philadelphia. she joins us live at west philadelphia high school. clinton knows at this point every vote in this key battle ground state matters. >> reporter: keith, that is especially true for hillary clinton here in philadelphia, where democrats far outweigh republicans. but if she wants to win pennsylvania, she needs them to come out to vote for her in november. to offset what donald trump will get elsewhere. hillary clinton taking the stage in west philadelphia, in a city where she already has a lot of support. but in november, she'll need votes. >> i think we know what we need to do. the question is, whether we will do it and that all comes down to who shows up and votes. >> reporter: the focus here today was registering new voters. >> we've got people waving over there. they've got their voter registration forms for you.

>> reporter: there were tables in the gym. volunteers heading out to canvas for her in the cafeteria, some in the crowd taking it upon themselves to get out the vote. >> absolutely. >> what are the conversations like? >> make sure you vote and turn out to support hillary clinton for president. >> reporter: this would be his first time voting in a presidential election when he turns 18. >> hillary convinced me pretty well before i wanted to go with bernie sanders. but i think i might give hillary a shot. >> reporter: recent polls show clinton leading donald trump. but she had a message for supporters in this battleground state. >> don't be complacent, my friends, because even though we're doing fine right now, i'm not taking anybody anywhere for granted. >> reporter: i talked to one of those volunteers who's been out canvassing and registering voters for hillary clinton, and asked about one of her big challeng challenges, which is trust. he told me, yes, he does run

be key for both candidates in the presidential race. we have seen hillary clinton here twice this week. so what's donald trump's game plan? nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal tells us why the suburbs in the lehigh valley could be his key to victory. >> reporter: with just 83 days to go, polls show donald trump trailing in pennsylvania. an nbc "wall street journal" poll shows him behind by wide margins in philly and the suburbs. >> we've already knocked on tens of thousands of doors in berks county alone. >> reporter: trump supporter and gop chair said volunteers have been hitting the road, 500 signing up in the past few weeks, and this area is a must-win for trump in 2012 republican mitt romney won by just a slim margin. >> the folks in berks county have a long tradition of manufacturing, and that's been lost over the years. >> reporter: but the trump campaign has yet to spend any

money on tv advertising in the state. advisers say it's still early, and trump could soon make a campaign stop in the philly burgs or lehigh valley. >> we'll see mr. trump campaigning. a state where you'll get a lot of visits from a lot of folks. >> reporter: the campaign said they're not worried by the polls and they claim to have a groundswell of volunteers as the election heads into the home stretch. >> getting the message out for our republican candidate, donald trump, and certainly that's the beginning of a big ground game. >> reporter: in berks county, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> well, we are tracking severe storms, but also a lot of heat around. we have the clouds in the center city skyline currently. but what we're dealing with are the thunderstorms in parts of berks county. so right around reading, we did have one severe thunderstorm warning until 5:15.

but now we're seeing very strong thunderstorms. we have wind gusts around 60 miles an hour, with some of these storms as well. so if we zoom in here, a lot of heavy rain, a lot of lightning as well in rockland. the heaviest has moved out of reading. there you see all the lightning moving toward douglas township here. and it will move mainly from west to east around 40 miles an hour. so this is one fast-moving thunderstorm here. any severe storms could be containing winds near 60 miles an hour, lightning, heavy rain and potential hail. now, this storm again moving to the east around 40 miles an hour. if you're in limerick, expect it by 5:24. north town 5:45. abington by about 6:00. i think we'll see some of the storms hold together and at least approach the philadelphia area in i would say the next hour or two. now another area of cluster of thompls just outside the lehigh valley, starting to move in, also into the poconos. this is one strong area of

thunderstorms. south white hall township can expect it about 5:31. easton by 6:00 p.m. we also have another thunderstorm down through parts of maryland. but this one moving near chester county soon. so also parts of northern delaware, newark expecting it by 5:45, wilmington about 6:00 p.m. that is a thunderstorm. we could see winds near 60 miles an hour, lightning, also heavy rain. now we take a wider view. you see the line of storms through berks county, just outside of chester county. now moving through lancaster county. we'll watch all these as they approach the philadelphia area. some parts of these storms may be trying to break up. we could certainly see some of those stronger storms hold together for a bit. temperatures are still in the mid to low 90s. humidity is making it feel hotter. take a look at the neighborhood temperatures, a little bit of rain, cool air, 85 degrees. mal vern coming in at 89.

then we have a 92 in collegeville. 91 for washington. 90 degrees right now in warrington. when you factor in the humidity, feels a lot hotter. feels like 109 in dover. 102 mount holly. 106 vineland. 105 in philadelphia. we're still dealing with dangerous heat. it's only helping to fuel the thunderstorms. by 7:00 p.m., the models are trying to keep the storms together, approaching the philadelphia area. could be weakening, though, by the time they try to move into new jersey. most of delaware tomorrow, a dry day. so we're not going to be worrying about the rain tomorrow, but we could see a few pop-up showers later tonight, 9:00 p.m. wednesday. some could be heading around thursday morning. not for everybody, though, mainly east and southeast of philadelphia. then we go into your thursday afternoon. looking fairly dry. tomorrow, though, we're still going to be around 90 degrees. humidity won't be as oppressive. so it's not going to feel like around 100 degrees. but it will be feeling around the mid-90s. 89 newtown.

if you're in allentown, expect 88 degrees. dry, sunny. we're still in the heat wave today. day number seven. i'm sure you felt it. it is oppressive in many areas with the humidity and nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is out in it now on the patio. what is this doing for our health? >> reporter: we're in the day seven of the heat wave, like you just mentioned. right now feeling outside of our studio, 108 degrees. we're looking at very hot conditions. we've been seeing those for the last few days. and those uncomfortable conditions not the only thing that people are complaining about. today we went and spoke with a local allergist who let us know what the summer heat may be doing to your allergies. dr. george martin was checking patients today, a full house at his upper darby office, all waiting for the same thing. >> i have to get my shots.

>> every two weeks i come in. i have to get five shots. >> reporter: dr. mar sin said there are several contributing factors to the summer allergy rise. >> the heat, humidity and pollution, pollution in the air like ozone, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide has an effect on the airways. >> reporter: during summer, people head outdoors to enjoy the sun. but with the sunny and humid conditions, plants are flourishing, and then some. >> this year's been much worse than last summer, because we've had a great deal of rain. we've had a great deal of humidity. and we've had a great deal of heat. a combination of those three cause mold spore counts to increase very much. >> reporter: the patients know how to stay ahead of the allergies. >> keep the windows closed. that hot air is not good for me. >> reporter: and dr. martin said really the best option is to just head indoors, something i'm doing right now. he also said that if you've been

as the water recedes, neighbors are returning home for the very first time and finding a soggy mess. one homeowner says his house took on five inches of muddy bayou water that was teeming with fish, spiders and mold. louisiana's governor said high waters have impacted about 40,000 homes. he expects half the state to declare disasters. >> things like this, pictures of my daughters. we'll never get things like that back. >> to put this in perspective for you, chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz said this is the worst flood disaster since superstorm sandy. meanwhile, back here at home, the weather is hot. there's also a threat of severe storms that we're going to talk about. but so is the demand for businesses at the jersey shore. see how the popular spots are trying to keep up with this weather. i'm jacqueline london live in rio de janeiro. everyone wants a medal here at

you can see the action here on the first alert radar. let's get right to nbc 10's team of meteorologists tracking neighborhood by neighborhood. we start with meteorologist sheena parveen for the very latest. where is it the most severe, sheena? >> in parts of the lehigh valley, winds near 60 to 65, maybe even 67 miles an hour. so we have a line of some very strong to veer thunderstorms. severe thunderstorm warnings for lehigh, north hampton county, until 6:00 p.m. in this line of storms, stretching through allentown, down to douglas, these are potentially containing winds near 67 miles an hour. those are damaging winds. also, very heavy rain, maybe marble-sized hail. there you see the lightning with it, too. if you look at the number of strikes in the past 15 minutes alone, 437. a severe storm is a very dangerous storm. in allentown expect it in a few minutes here. bethlehem 5:30. palmer by about 5:50. that is traveling to the

northeast. take a look at the radar detected winds here. like i mentioned, winds near 66, 67 miles an hour. that's what we've picked up on the radar. and those same winds are in fact moving to the northeast. so we're going to see these all move into the lehigh valley, near allentown, and areas continuing to the north and east of that. we slide a little farther to the south. now we're looking more into maryland. because this strong storm will be heading potentially into chester county, also newcastle county, delaware. a number of lightning strikes here. 783 in the past 15 minutes. if we track this system for you, newark will expect it by 5:45. chester by about 6:13. we'll keep tracking these storms for you, some parts of the area could continue to see them over the next few hours. we'll show you the timing on that and when the heat wave is finally going to come to an end. >> we'll keep checking in, sheena. thank you. want to cool off from the

john clark is on a special night with a phillies great. >> reporter: one of the most popular phillies ever, chase utley makes his first trip back to philly to play here at citizens bank park. he was traded to the dodgers a year ago this week. take a look at chase out here on the field. he will lead off for the dodgers tonight. and you know what, chase said he never had a chance to say good-bye to phillies fans, and the city when he was traded last year. he misses this place. and you know chase, he doesn't get very emotional or let his feelings out. but he says tonight could be a little emotional. >> it will be an exciting night. yeah, like you said, have an opportunity to say good-bye. everything kind of happened pretty quickly last year. i try to keep my best keeping my emotions to myself. obviously there are so many memories, so many great times i've had in this stadium in front of these great fans. i truly believe without their

now two "nbc 10 responds." a mother and daughter say they're still reeling from the death of a loved one, and while attempting to clear up old bills one company continued to make matters worse. so they turned to harry hairston and "nbc 10 responds." >> after listening to what the family had to say, we went to work right away putting a fuel calls of our own to get their problem handled. >> after my father had passed, we obviously wanted to deactivate his phone. >> reporter: nathan died last december.

>> this is my father's stack of bills. >> reporter: his daughter barbara cooper said the family deactivated at&t services days after his death. but the phone company continued to sell bills month after month after month. >> this has kept coming back to haunt us. >> reporter: at&t said to send a copy of her father's death certificate and her power of attorney. then it would close the account immediately. >> we went through everything. we updated everything. >> reporter: at&t never closed his account. in fact, it continued to bill cooper's mother for both her phone and her deceased husband's phone. for six months, cooper's mother paid both bills, not realizing one was for her dead husband, until she missed a payment. that's when at&t send cooper's mother this late notice. >> she didn't realize with all the paperwork we had to deal with, that there was a bill in his name and a bill in her name. >> reporter: cooper said she contacted at&t, and the company told her it had no proof her

father was dead. >> i was furious. i said, this is ridiculous. >> reporter: she said she submitted proof of her father's death to at&t two more times. even taking copies to where the phones were purchased. but the bills kept coming. so cooper reached out to nbc 10 respon responds. >> i would like you to get my money her mother back. and get the phone deactivated. >> reporter: after we got involved, at&t closed her father's account, and refunded the family for six months of service. >> my mother received her refund, and our issue is taken care of. thank you again. we could not have done it without you. >> at&t also sent a statement to "nbc 10 responds." at&t said it extends its sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by this unfortunate error. we are investigating the details to avoid this type of error in the future. with that, $527 refund, the

recovery counter is now $80,589. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. well, we are still tracking some severe storms. obviously not for everybody. but if you're in the lehigh valley, or even parts of berks county, you've already dealt with the strong thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, too. we still have a warning until 6:00 p.m. it's heading to the east. allentown even seeing that. montgomery county, pensburg, green lane approaching 4:76, seeing heavy rain as well. it's part of the same line of storms. right through the lehigh valley. if you're in palmer, expect this storm around the allentown area by 5:50, easton 5:53. it will continue to move to the northeast around 40 miles an hour. here's some of the current radar

detected winds within the storm i just showed you. we're looking at possibly 62, 63 miles an hour winds near coopersburg. so again, we'll be watching that storm. it does appear to be weakening a bit. we could still be seeing wind damage from it. down toward parts of maryland, to the south of chester county, parksburg seeing one strong thunderstorm approaching chester county there. but also one severe thunderstorm in maryland, about to move into new castle county in just a bit here. but a number of lightning strikes, around 600 in the past 15 minutes. this is a severe thunderstorm. and i think it will be moving into new castle county in just a bit. in newark, expect it by 6:03. wilmington 6:17. upper darby, about 6:36 if it holds together. we've been watching the strong storms throughout the afternoon. they've been mostly confined through the lehigh valley, berks county, and off to the west and south. again, some of those storms

could move through and move into the philadelphia area. in the next hour or so. we do have a severe thunderstorm watch for all the counties shaded in the pink color until 11:00 p.m. tonight. we'll give you updates on that. severe thunderstorms could be containing winds near 60 miles an hour. lightning, heavy rain and potential hail. we've seen indications of possibly marble-sized hail. you want to stay indoors if you're in the path of any of thinks storms. approaching philadelphia, maybe by about 7:30. even northern delaware, new castle county. but kind of dying out for new jersey and the rest of delaware. we'll be watching that closely tonight. by tomorrow afternoon, we're mostly dry. tomorrow night, we could see a few pop-up showers trying to develop late tomorrow night. and that could even carry over into early thursday morning. maybe not for everybody, but by thursday afternoon, we should be fairly dry. temperature-wise, we're still hot right now. but big difference through the lehigh valley, 79 degrees there. rain-cooled air, philadelphia, still sitting at 94.

a stormy night. we're tracking storms moving into the region now, as we deal with this extended heat wave. liar and snake, why nik al nutter lashed out against one city employee today. a knockout. i'm jacqueline london. a new jersey boxer punches his ticket to a medal here in rio. our extreme heat and humidity bringing thunderstorms at this hour. we're tracking storms packing a strong punch as they move towards the delaware valley. and these storms have already rolled through reading. look at this. nbc 10 viewer sent us this video in the past few minutes. rain falling fast and furious out there. in the first alert weather center, a busy night here tracking storms in your

neighborhood. with sheena and gren glen. we begin with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz, watching that line of storms right now. >> yes. that storm that went through reading had a wind gust close to 50 miles an hour, right at the reading airport. so we actually do have evidence that we have some pretty strong winds, with some of these storms. and we have seen these storms moving pretty quickly over the last few hours. they have moved from central pennsylvania with loads of lightning into eastern pennsylvania now. and it's actually starting to break up a little bit. as it continues to move to the east. here's the evidence of that. an hour ago, the number of lightning strikes, close to 2,000, just in a 15-minute period, right across this line. and now, about 500, less than a third of the number of lightning strikes in just one hour.
