with sheena and gren glen. we begin with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz, watching that line of storms right now. >> yes. that storm that went through reading had a wind gust close to 50 miles an hour, right at the reading airport. so we actually do have evidence that we have some pretty strong winds, with some of these storms. and we have seen these storms moving pretty quickly over the last few hours. they have moved from central pennsylvania with loads of lightning into eastern pennsylvania now. and it's actually starting to break up a little bit. as it continues to move to the east. here's the evidence of that. an hour ago, the number of lightning strikes, close to 2,000, just in a 15-minute period, right across this line. and now, about 500, less than a third of the number of lightning strikes in just one hour. so we're seeing this storm break

up in many places. there's some of the activity. now, most of the lightning strikes are actually down in maryland now. if anything, they're going to be crossing into northern delaware over the next couple of hours. here's that storm that just went through allentown. it's right over easton at the moment. and it continues to be producing heavy rain. but only for a short period of time. because it's moving so fast. so right over downtown easton, they're getting poured on right now. another little storm in northern bucks county, just south of richland and north of perkesey, producing widespread severe storm damage. getting isolated spots. meteorologist sheena parveen gets into more detail on those. >> glenn, even though some of these are breaking up a bit, they're still fairly strong. they still contain very heavy rain, even lightning.

like glenn mentioned even damaging wind gusts potentially, even possibly marble-sized hail. take a look now, and we're seeing this thunderstorm, it is severe. it is in maryland. but it is very quickly approaching new castle county. this is one severe thunderstorm warning for maryland. but it is heading towards new castle county in northern delaware. now, this one has some very heavy rain with it. lightning as well. traveling to the east around 40 miles an hour. newark can expect 2 by 6:14. pennsville 6:34. salem 6:46. that is one strong thunderstorm there. another one as we look closer to chester county, thorndale can expect this thunderstorm by 6:07. lionville 6:16. we have some more developing. they're very small. they're getting stronger in bucks county. glenn will show you a closer look at the storms for the rest of this evening, all coming up.

other news now, pennsylvania's top law enforcer steps down. this afternoon attorney general kathleen kane announced her resignation less than 24 hours after a jury found her guilty on all counts. the shakeup begins tomorrow. kane is leaving office and her second in command bruce castor is taking over. nbc 10's deanna durante reports tonight in the state capital. >> reporter: escorted quickly from the courthouse after her conviction, it may be the last time cakathleen kane is seen publicly in her position. she's stepping down as the attorney general. >> i don't have any stake in the outcome of the case. >> reporter: but with her criminal conviction, bruce castor gets the post he wanted 12 years ago. the former district attorney of montgomery county ran for attorney general, and lost to tom corbett.

castor was appointed to kane's top deputy in march, a new post she created. and then he filled the chief deputy vacancy weeks ago. the republican could hold the job until a new attorney general is elected in november. >> they have no idea the learning curve that it will take when they get here. we have very capable prosecutors, investigators, and staff to help them. but i still think that that's going to be a big job. >> reporter: castor recently tried to get his old job back, but he lost to his former employee, the man who led the prosecution at kane's criminal trial. castor said he will take a look at the office, the staffers and those involved in the kane criminal probe. but he said the main focus is to restore order to the office of attorney general. the governor could exercise his right to appoint someone, and if the senate accepts that

appointment, that means castor's tenure could run out before the voters have a chance to elect a permanent replacement in november. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. now, to the push for pennsylvania in decision 2016. for the second day in a row, hillary clinton made a pitch to voters here in pennsylvania. she wrapped up her second event of the day in west philadelphia a short time ago. clinton has focused on pennsylvania since the democratic national convention last month. today marks her eighth stop in the keystone state, in the last three weeks. lauren mayk reports on clinton's visit to west philadelphia today. >> reporter: strong poll numbers and this support in philadelphia, hillary clinton has a message for supporters. don't be complacent. >> we're going to work hard these next 85 days. and i can't do it without your help. >> reporter: her second day in a row in pennsylvania. >> we're going to lift people up! we're going to help every single

person in america live up to those dreams! >> reporter: she pushed optimism here. looking to draw contrast with donald trump. >> sometimes when i hear trump talking about how we should all be so afraid all the time. and then i find a few minutes to watch the olympics. >> reporter: one of clinton's biggest reaction from the crowd came when she said this. >> and yes, i am going to take on the gun lobby to try to save lives here in philadelphia and across pennsylvania. >> reporter: why do you think that got such a big cheer here? >> number one, i'm a retired teacher of 42 years. i've had two children killed in the street. >> reporter: she heads to another battleground state, ohio, leaving supporters to carry her message here. >> let's go to work and build the future that america deserves!

on the republican side, donald trump has made three stops in pennsylvania, all in the western part of the state since the republican national convention last month. tomorrow trump will oversee his first classified intelligence briefing in new york. the director of national intelligence said recently the briefings are at this point fairly general. similar meetings have been held with presidential nominees since the 1950s. philadelphia police are asking for your help to find the two men in this surveillance video, right here. they were caught on camera robbing a convenience store on unity street last month in frankfurt. you can see the man dart behind the counter and attack the clerk right there. one of the suspects used brass knuckles during the attack. police say they have arrested one of two men caught on this surveillance camera, robbing asian-owned businesses throughout philadelphia. they're still looking for the other. officers believe the pair is responsible for 11 holdups since may. norman bowen is under arrest tonight.

the other suspect's name is anthony campbell. if you know where he might be, you're asked to call philadelphia police. time to get up to speed on the latest for the summer games in rio de janeiro. the americans looking to bounce back tonight. nbc 10's jacqueline london joining us once again from rio. jacqueline? >> reporter: team usa is looking to get a jump on the competition after not placing at the top of the podium in any events yesterday. maybe philly native will help change that. she hurdled her way into competition today with her rio debut. she won her heat in the 100-meter hurdle. her mother and son watched from the stands during her first run. she advances to the semifinals tomorrow. one last chance for one more gold before simone biles' rio games come to an end. she takes on her teammate and close friend aly raisman in the

accuses a top aide to former mayor of michael nutter of misspending hundreds of thousands of dollars on trips, transportation, even shoes. the former mayor himself fired back with a scathing statement. monique braxton spent the day speaking to the person who raised the red flag. >> instead of making grant awards, it appears the former chairperson used the reserves account as if it was a special slush fund. >> reporter: pointing the finger at desiree, the former chair of the mayor's fund an cabinet member of michael nutter. peter directed the executive director of the fund to set aside a new and separate marathon reserve fund, of $200,000 for grants. the executive director, ashley del bianco, raised the red flag. >> some people would say you're a whistleblower. how do you react to that? >> i don't qualify as that. i think it was simply following

actually the path that the previous mayor and the current mayor have laid for integrity and transparency. >> reporter: she showed us what was called 16 questionable purchases, including $52,000 charged to the courtyard marriott before and during the visit of pope francis. the trip to rome, to finalize the pope's visit came in at $45,000. other expenses he questions include a trip to san francisco for $766. 33 uber rides for $704. and $80 for a pair of shoes from macy's. del bianco said she was more concerned about $45,000 paid to vendors for a holiday celebration. >> some of the expenditures specifically around end of the year events, and some things that weren't necessarily appropriate in support of the mayor's policies and procedures. >> reporter: in the statement, mayor nutter said in part, the

controller is a liar, a snake, and a hypocrite. there is no truth in what he says. >> pretty messed up. the money is supposed to be for a nonprofit. >> reporter: we asked runners about this investigation into misuse of moneys from a fund they pay into when they register for the marathon. it costs up to $155. desiree did get back to us this afternoon and said miss del bianco did sign off on all expenditures, including those listed. in the meantime the investigation will continue, and broaden. any future investigation will have to be done by the district attorney. in the doc, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. now, your nbc 10 weather. we've seen the thunderstorms moving eastward across the state. a couple of hours ago, lots of

lightning to the west. now once they've reached the allentown area, they've really weakened. we do have more action toward new castle county and up toward the poconos. but that's about it. we're not seeing a whole lot left. here is one cell near easton. this is the strongest one that is near east nottingham. a good bit of lightning with it. this is northern delaware here. so it's going just north of newark, right around 6:23, 6:46 at wilmington, 6:57 at claymont. that's the strongest storm that's left. we have one smaller cell that's going to phoenixville about 6:42. the heat wave continues. it was another brutal day today. 94 for the high. it felt like 105. day seven. but we're going to be getting

relief in the form of lower humidity. sunshine, some of the western suburbs now. the ocean warming back up a little bit. but a nice sea breeze, so it's not as hot. vent nor 84. cape may point 88 degrees. inland it's been feeling like it's just a terrible, terrible afternoon. we've seen the feels-like temperatures getting up over 110 degrees. here's the futurecast, as we go through the evening, you see the computer model really nailing the southern storm and northern storm and the weakening in between. so what's going to happen? by 10:00, there's practically nothing left on here. what it's doing is knocking some of the humidity out of the air. you should feel that tomorrow. then as we go toward tomorrow night, and into thursday morning, we may see some more showers, especially in delaware and south jersey, starting the

day off thursday with the clouds. but we're going to be seeing improving conditions. you don't see any feels-like over 100 tomorrow. somer tomorrow, 91. temperature feel like 93. chestnut, feeling like 90. easton feeling like 88. cape may, it's still going to be feeling pretty hot. easton township 90, feeling like 94. nothing like it has been. thursday, chance of some showers early. friday, it gets hot again. but not super holt. and not super humid, where we're talking about danger. lehigh valley, temperatures may stay below 90 the whole time. and at the jersey shore, they certainly will be staying below 90. more showers coming in on thursday. now take a look at this. here's friday. 91. 92 on saturday. but again, we're not talking about feeling like over 100. sunday, some showers.
